(TheBlaze/AP) — The main suspect in the gang rape and fatal beating of a woman on a New Delhi bus, an attack that horrified Indians and set off national protests, committed suicide in jail Monday, police officials said.

Ram Singh, who is accused of driving the bus on which the 23-year-old student was raped and fatally assaulted by a group of six men in December, hung himself with his own clothes, said G. Sudhakar, the top police official at Tihar jail.

Singh, along with four other men on trial with him on rape, murder and abduction charges, had been under a suicide watch, another jail official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. He said the five were being held in separate cells in separate buildings at the jail.

If convicted, the men could face the death penalty. The sixth accused is being tried and jailed separately because he is a juvenile.

Singh’s lawyer, A. P. Singh, confirmed his client’s death, saying he died at 5:30 a.m. He alleged that police maleficence led to his client’s death.

“What do you mean killed himself? He has been killed in prison,” Singh said.

Lawyers for the men have previously accused police of beating confessions out of their clients.

Indian jails have a reputation for overcrowding, poor management and brutal treatment of inmates.

The woman and a male friend were attacked after boarding the bus Dec. 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie, police say. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

The brutal attack set off nationwide protests about India’s treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

Singh’s death comes as the trial was deep underway, with another hearing scheduled for Monday. There was no word if that would be affected.

Imagine what Chris Stevens experienced by the beasts in Benghazi.

If the bus driver was guilty of participating in the brutal gang (and metal bar) rape… may his soul have no peace throughout eternity.

    >May there be 72 pretty virgins who do to him what he and the gang did –for eternity.

Uhm, how is one man a gang rape suspect?
Maybe a gang rape witness, victim, or participant.
Not ‘THE’ suspect… oh wait, i forgot, we’re dealing with the countries that the Left is paying millions to when we can’t pay for our soldier’s schooling or leave ‘The People’s House’ open….
you know, those countries where women have few or no rights, are treated like property, may be stoned to death if raped… those countries that are bastions of the Left ideals. Makes perfect sense, now… ‘the crime of gang rape has been addressed, and the guilty punished… proceed with the execution of the harlot.’

    right.

example of the potential disarray, chaos, and anarchy in a ‘pure’ democracy at work here.

why are the suspects hooded? they should be made known to the public. if proven innocent, that should be made clear to the public as well.

Even in the world’s largest democracy the weak are preyed upon, but the Left refuses to admit or recognize that, and instead of protecting our strength, they want us to be ‘just like the res’ so we can be preyed upon too.

This set off protest in india against the treatment of women. First of all , There was a man with her who was beaten badly. Second, India is not known for the rule of law so all of you here at the blaze have no idea if these 6 men are actually the ones who did this. However, This all could have been prevented if the woman had a whistle or had vomited on herself. Maybe a pen might have done it or a sign on the bus that said, ” no rape on this bus”.

OH, I got one for SNL, they are going to love this one!

You know those skits where they show products with new slogans by showing their picture up on the screen? Here’s a good one?

You show a giant tube of KY Jelly and the commentator says, this just in, KY Jelly says the government will allow them to say, their product may reduce suicidal thoughts. They can’t say proven, because only a doctor can treat disease, but they can say it “may” reduce suicidal thoughts and tendencies?

    Who knew?

I think just placing them in a Public Square would be appropriate. I am sure the Indian citizens would provide appropriate justice to these freaks. They deserve no mercy for their truly evil deed.

No big loss on the rapist’s part. They should have hung all of them by the balls, shoved a nice very rusty metal rod up their rear ends dry and let them hang there until dead. Then cut them up into a thousand pieces and feed them to pigs. Very sad thing for the woman. It’s ashamed that some men behave like this and do such things to women. They need to suffer greatly with the maximum amount of pain before executing them. Upside down crucifixions work great too. Or we could just use meat hooks and chains on them and tear their souls apart. In no way should they sit in prison as punishment for their crime.

Great Job Blaze…..Ameritpoia News would have never printed this story or talked about it..Great Job as usual.

If women do not want to get raped, then women need to buy really good metal not plastic whistles for protection.

@Ridemodels: Sadly, there are many in the world, crying out for America right now.. and we are holding on for dear life, to a thread of the constitution. If America falls… it’s all over. And the whole world knows it. I have friends in other countries who are praying with all their might, that America can just hold on.. hold on for the sake of the world. God help us awake from this nightmare.. and it’s only just begun I fear. :(
