A new video released by conservative activist Jason Mattera will surely have gun rights advocates up in arms. In an exchange with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) that was caught on camera last month but only released Monday, the Democratic politician spoke openly about her gun control views, noting that current proposals are only the beginning.

Perhaps the most contentious portion of the dialogue, which purportedly took place at a women’s rights rally, is the section in which she seems to indicate that a much larger push against firearms could inevitably take aim at handguns.

At the beginning of the exchange, Mattera identifies himself but tells Schakowsky that he “appreciated her remarks” (he does not indicate his conservative worldview and she appears not to recognize him). Considering these tactics, his introduction potentially gained her trust, leading the congresswoman to candidly share her views. He also repeatedly addressed her using “we” and it appears as though Schakowsky doesn’t realize she’s being recorded.

“I was wondering, is it time we have a serious conversation not just about assault rifles, but about handguns as well?,” Mattera asked.

“Well, that’s why if we have universal background checks, that will effect every single kind of weapon,” she replied. “The Brady Campaign thinks that of all the things that have been suggested, this may actually be the thing that does the most to prevent gun violence.”

The congressional leader went on to say that there is a “moment of opportunity” and that political leaders are “going to push as hard as we can and as far as we can.” When Mattera then noted that most gun deaths are the result of handguns and questioned why addressing those type of firearms isn’t currently on the table, Schakowsky was candid, later adding that she’s personally opposed to handguns.

“We’re not going to be able to win that — not now,” she said. “But background checks I think are going to, you know, address any kind of weapon.”

Mattera, again, pushed handguns as a point of conversation, noting that a full-throttle ban could never be secured, considering the Second Amendment’s current wording.

“I don’t know. I don’t know that we can’t,” Schakowsky said, going on to note that some municipalities in her district have banned handguns, seemingly driving home the point that there is support among select cohorts for more restrictive measures in this arena. ”I don’t think it’s precluded.”

It should be noted that Mattera used a number of misleading tactics in speaking with Schakowsky. In addition to telling her that he appreciated her words, he also used “we” when discussing the chances of achieving a handgun ban (i.e. “We’ll never get a handgun ban with the Second Amendment as stated”). These measures were seemingly used to gain her trust and to make a foray into the conversation. We should also note the video is edited.

Since its inception, TheBlaze has maintained that reporters — especially conservative ones — should not rely upon these mechanisms for retrieving information, as they are misleading tools that do not allow for an ethical and robust pursuit for truth. That said, we do feel a responsibility to report on controversial comments made by public figures.

  Glad the Blaze has it’s morals, but had they prevailed, this lawmaker would not have been so open and honest about her intentions. Politicians lie and trick us all the time. This guy just made her think he was on her side and that was it. Nothing wrong. She’s a lib commie with an agenda and she was exposed. This guy just adapted to HER ‘battleground’ standards, rules etc. and it worked. It’s great to get people to admit to what they want to do to affect your life.

  @The-Jerk….you are right and wrong….remember in Russia the Bolsheviks where dealing with a peasant class that had already been disarmed by the Tzar. That and people where so poor they couldn’t have afforded weapons if they wanted them. This gun grab in the US may work in the cities for the same reason but the NSA couldn’t have enough armored vehicles to take the countries interior. We are to well armed, will fight and unless they side with us the 2nd Amendment we will attack out police force’s first.   The_Jerk. My point was that the population was heavily armed under Nicholas. Many were disarmed by the Bolsheviks by promises of safety and security. Of course as soon as they agreed they were promptly shot. The rest were disarmed after the civil war between the Reds and Whites in 1918. They’ve been screwed ever since.   While I understand why The Blaze would seek to discourage reporters from misleading politicians it is, no doubt, also true that misleading them is the only way to get to the truth. This is especially true if the reporter is a conservative and the politician is a leftist.
  It is important for the American people to know that leftist politicians don’t really seek”common sense” solutions to end gun violence. They want to take guns out of the hands of private citizens.
  Just as leftist politicians do not really seek a solution to our deficit/debt problem. They want to tax and spend more in the name of social justice, and to create more government dependence in order to create one party–Democrat—rule. It is important that the American people know these things and if conservative journalists—few though they be—need to break a few ethical rules to bring the story forward, so be it.

  The way he obtained the information is perfectly legit, in my opinion. These kinds of people will not answer when directly asked a question. They just keep walking, or walk away, and say some excuse like “I can’t talk to you right now. Contact my office for a statement.” And she WAS in a public venue that had her as one of the speakers. How about a law which would ban any politician who tells a lie to his or her constituants and immediately remove them from office? What about the same for any who do not follow through on their solemn oath to protect and uphold The Constitution of The United States of America? The same for any who take money for votes or to line their pockets. The same for any who do not work a minimum of forty-eight hours per week, doing The People’s business.

I’m sue the Congresswoman from Illinois would be one of the first to move such a bill through Congress.

You see, 80% of more of our ” new ” Congress needs to be FIRED, since Impeachment proceedings are not proceeding against Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Registered voters can begin a petition drive and upon getting enough signatures, which are authenticated as viable, can FIRE their elected member of Congress. We want the politicians to start telling the truth..why are we spending millions on tanks and assult weapons and bullets for homeland security? We know its not for the mexican boarder..so what is it all for? Its against the law to make a army to be used against the American people..Are the Obama homeland scurity planning a coup against the American people when the stock market falls, the banks fail, the 401ks and IRAs are taken, and the government cannot pay its bills and no social security checks or food stamps are no longer paid, when China says we want Japan..and Tawian and California for your debt..Russian moves in on Alaska…tell us why homeland security is building a Obama army?

It was the same thing with Obamacare. The left knew they couldn’t get single payer government sponsored health care so they went with a system that will lead to it. You start with back-ground checks sponsored by the federal government…not the states. Then you start compiling a list of gun-owners and you have it centralized. Then you can use current government agencies to start leaning on gun-owners. Gun-owners will pay higher health insurance premiums. Get audited by the IRS more often etc. etc. It’s a classic end-run around the states. But you can’t get any of it without fear-mongering. Trolls like Meteors and Keaton have never mentioned the hand-gun ban. They only use the terms “semi-automatic weapons” and “assault rifles”. But as with health care….they want the whole loaf….not just a slice.

People like her have been talking about all out bans on handguns for decades. It happens in small amounts in selective cities, but there will never be a total ban across the country. Stories like this from the blaze are totally irresponsible. Typical blaze readers are not very educated or sophisticated and become frightened easily. For the blaze to claim it attempts an ethical and robust search for the truth is an absurdity. It panders to the fringe of society and christian radicals. The stories reflect that as do the advertisers.

A trend doesn’t indicate a cause or a connection in any part of the world. Any truly free-minded person seeks to explain a trend by collecting further data to develop a hypothesis but you are simply content to show the trend and make a conclusion without further evidence.
  
  As if that wasn’t bad enough, your “correlation” is based on an analysis of a select group and yet you try to apply it to a larger, more diverse group. After all, why is it that every single “Jewish progressive” you point out is either a politician (almost always on the federal level), a political activist, or someone with close ties to politicians? Why is it that you are never able to list even something as simple as progressive Jewish doctors or lawyers, or even engineers? By limiting your search you inevitably will get fallacious results.

So bias or not, based on percentages of law abidding gun owners v.s. criminals with guns, at least the Blaze is being far more honest in it’s positive representation of gun owners than most other meida.

My girlfriend can’t get a double barrel shotgun inside her purse but a S&W Bodyguard in .38 special fits the bill. Sounds like this is just one more Dem politician that believes in rape whistles and call boxes? Thus far, backward Illinois is the only state “holding-up” concealed carry permits. Anyway, “Universal Background Checks” can be avoided by back dating private sales before the new, draconian law is enacted. That makes their new gun control affront to American human rights a toothless, dead end hag.

We set ourselves up for a handgun ban right from the start arguing that most gun deaths are the result of handguns and shotguns and not assault rifles.
