COLUMBIA, S.C. (TheBlaze/AP) — Have you noticed that zombies seem to be everywhere these days?
In the popular TV series “The Walking Dead,” humans struggle to escape from a pack of zombies hungry for flesh. Prank alerts have warned of a zombie apocalypse on radio stations in a handful of states. And across the country, zombie wannabes in tattered clothes occasionally fill local parks, gurgling moans of the undead.
Are these just unhealthy obsessions with death and decay? To Clemson University professor Sarah Lauro, the phenomenon isn’t harmful or a random fad, but part of a historical trend that mirrors a level of cultural dissatisfaction and economic upheaval.
Lauro, who teaches English at Clemson, studied zombies while working on her doctoral degree at the University of California at Davis. Lauro said she keeps track of zombie movies, TV shows and video games, but her research focuses primarily on the concept of the “zombie walk,” a mass gathering of people who, dressed in the clothes and makeup of the undead, stagger about and dance.

It’s a fascination that, for Lauro, a self-described “chicken,” seems unnatural. Disinterested in violent movies or games, Lauro said she finds herself now taking part in both in an attempt to further understand what makes zombie-lovers tick.
“I hate violence,” she said. “I can’t stand gore. So it’s a labor, but I do it.”
The zombie mob originated in 2003 in Toronto, Lauro said, and popularity escalated dramatically in the United States in 2005, alongside a rise in dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq.
“It was a way that the population was getting to exercise the fact that they felt like they hadn’t been listened to by the Bush administration,” Lauro said. “Nobody really wanted that war, and yet we were going to war anyway.”
The mid- to late 2000s also saw an uptick in overall zombie popularity, perhaps prompted in part by the release of post-apocalyptic movies including “Dawn of the Dead” and “28 Days Later.”

Zombie enthusiasts practice being scary before setting out on a ‘Zombie Walk’ in the city center on October 27, 2012 in Berlin, Germany. As of last year, Lauro said, zombie walks had been documented in 20 countries. The largest gathering drew more than 4,000 participants at the New Jersey Zombie Walk in Asbury Park, N.J., in October 2010, according to Guinness World Records.
“We are more interested in the zombie at times when as a culture we feel disempowered,” Lauro said. “And the facts are there that, when we are experiencing economic crises, the vast population is feeling disempowered. … Either playing dead themselves … or watching a show like `Walking Dead’ provides a great variety of outlets for people.”
But, Lauro pointed out, the display of dissatisfaction isn’t always a conscious expression of that feeling of frustration.
“If you were to ask the participants, I don’t think that all of them are very cognizant of what they’re saying when they put on the zombie makeup and participate,” she said. “To me, it’s such an obvious allegory. We feel like, in one way, we’re dead.”

Mar. 11, 2013 at 10:09amI remember reading, an interview with a video game developer, a few years ago who gave “political correctness” as the reason that he used zombies in his games. His reasoning was that by using zombies, he wouldn’t have to be worried race being an issue, after all they are just zombies.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 10:40amDidn’t work out so well for one of the Resident Evil games that took place in heart of Africa…. people complained that majority of the parasite infected zombies were African… So company went back and mixed things up and added more diverse types of zombies.
Overall white zombie majority is ok apparently though.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 11:09amI would be concerned if my kids were gleefully excited about the idea of chopping up anything. There’s a difference between “willing to defend” and “excited to chop up”, especially when you compare the zombies to human Democrats and talk about “getting even”.

This is actually the crux of the obsession – it’s a fad, sister, and the people participating are CLUELESS. They’re doing it because, well, everyone else they know is doing it. Another example of sheeple who have too little initiative or motivation to do anything constructive.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 9:48amActually that was close in time to the beginning of the beginnings of the modern zombie craze. The Beatles landed in new York in 1964, while the modern zombies appeared near Pittsburgh in the 1968 George Romero cult film “Night of the Living Dead.” The film was followed by its bigger budget sequels and the Michael Jackson “Thriller” video in the 1970′s.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 9:08amThis is obviously big news…
My opinion is that these things come and go in cycles. A few years ago, wasn’t it the “Vampire” craze, what with Twilight and all the spin-offs? Before that it was the “Magician” phase with Harry Potter. Before that, probably vampires again, with shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” We can track others like aliens and psycho killers too, I’m sure.
Supernatural monsters come and go in fashion. Right now it’s zombies. I don’t think it’s tied to the economy or dissatisfaction, so much as “Hey, we haven’t seen zombies in a decade, and everyone is bored of werewolves, so let’s go back to zombies!” Then the market gets oversaturated, and Hollywood will move on to some new supernatural menace.
And the American public will let their brains rot in front of their TVs, and our Brave New World will continue.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 9:06amWhat idiots!
‘Zombies’ is just a more acceptable way of seeing post-apocalyptic Obammy voters. Just like those same morons couldn’t or wouldn’t see Obammy for who he is, but rather, for what freebies he promised; so can’t they see themselves when looking at themselves on a television screen. Who is buying all the ‘zombie’ paraphernalia?
This person is – “We ain’t evah gone havta worry bout our mortgage or puttin’ gas in the car.”
and this person – “Well, like Luke, like he totally loves Laura, but like she’s a vampire and he’s a werewolf”. “No Sharon, Luke is homosexual!” “Oh, Prissy, that’s gross! you’re supposed to say ‘gay’!”
“Bamaphone! Keep Obama in Presdnet, you know? He gave us a phone – gone do more!”

Mar. 11, 2013 at 9:05amI would submit that the Zombie popularity touches upon an inherent core of individualism and self determination. For example, part and parcel of the “zombie culture” is recognizing a need to prepare for the “zombie apocalypse” A great example of this is The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, who also wrote World War Z. All the essentials are there, food storage, weapons (firearms and melee) and ammo hoarding, and defensible positions are all things discussed within this culture.
This academic obviously wanted to further her agenda by deliberately misinterpreting a concept that’s been in entertainment for 80 years.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 8:54amZombie movies have been popular for many years. I remember seeing the original Dawn of the Dead (late 70s) in the theater…that scene with the zombie rising under the sheet still gives me the willies!
I know some prepper types, and many of them use the zombie notion to describe (and prepare for) any unknown. I guess the idea is that if you prepare for a zombie outbreak, you’ll be prepared for just about anything (earthquake, EMP, financial collapse, food shortage, civil unrest, tornado outbreak, hurricane, etc.). I suspect there’s some truth in that approach.
Whatever it is about zombies that thrill people, you can be sure of one thing…if the zombies ever do come, I’m heading to D.C. No zombies will go looking for food [brains] in that city.

Mar. 11, 2013 at 8:52amI don’t know what it is, but I HAVE heard more about zombies and vampires in the last 5 years than ever before. I think part of it is that men had to grow up a lot quicker when I was a kid.
