Robber Confronts 81-Year-Old Man and Demands ‘Everything You Got’ — Turns Out, What He Had Was a .38-Caliber Revolver

81 Year Old Man Confronts, Shoots Robber in Ocala, Florida

shutterstock.com

As he was driving home on Sunday night, 81-year-old Florida resident James Stevens said he knew something was amiss after he realized a 2010 Kia had been following him for about 20 minutes.

Stevens wasn’t about to lead the man tailing him to his Ocala, Fla. home, so he pulled over in a field. Sure enough, the Kia also stopped. In retrospect, the suspected robber would tell you he should’ve just kept on driving.

The quick-thinking 81-year-old then retrieved his .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and got out of his truck, according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Stevens told investigators that the driver of the Kia — later identified as Lonnie Lorenza Hollingsworth Jr., 28 — got out of the vehicle, approached him and demanded “everything you got,” reports state.

“I didn’t want to shoot him, but I had to. I shot him,” Stevens told deputies.

According to evidence photos, it appears that Stevens fired four rounds from the six-shot revolver.

Hollingsworth was shot once in the abdomen and was lying in the grass motionless when the first deputy arrived. The deputy began performing CPR until an ambulance arrived and paramedics took over. Hollingsworth was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Michelle Barron, a resident in the area of the shooting, called 911 and mistakenly thought Hollingsworth was dead.

“We have a dead person out here,” Barron told the 911 operator. “The guy that lives across the street was parking his truck in the field and someone tried to rob him and he shot him and killed him.”

Hollingsworth has had numerous run-ins with the law and was convicted in 2008 of carrying a concealed firearm and altering the serial number of a firearm. He also was charged with wearing a bulletproof vest in the commission of an attempted crime, but that charge was dropped.

Hollingsworth did not have a weapon Sunday, reports noted.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident. No charges had been filed late Monday.

This incident shows the relative absurdity of “calling the cops.”

Cops can’t “prevent” most crimes against people. They act as the first link in “punishing” criminals.

      Punish, not prevent.

If that elderly gentleman had not be so adept, there could have been dire consequences for him. Instead, the perp has to go to prison and explain to all the Neanderthals that an 80 year old man stopped him in his tracks. He’ll likely get raped in there for his efforts. Hard to project that “don’t mess with me ” image when an 80 year old thwarts a 28 year old man.

He must’ve had an old outdated vest on. How else can an abdomen gunsot wound be lethal hile wearing a vest. Can someone say hollow points? Too bad people don’t understand that you never know who is packing heat. It could be the man in a wheelchair, young lady, old man, whatever. More people holding their own with confidence in self defense like the Wild West is necessary in this crazy violent world. Things will get better eventually, but more examples will probably have to be made of these knuckleheads who will be taught painful and sometimes permanent lessons for trying to take what ain’t theirs. Products of ad parenting.

      ShamanWorld,

Hollingsworth was charged with wearing a bullet proof vest in a previous event. I don’t think he was wearing it in this event.

Hollingsworth was unarmed too. That tells me he was acting on impulse because he thought an 81 year old man was an easy target. It was almost his last mistake.

Hardly the case. Rick Scott signed in the Castle doctrine, allowing for the use of lethal force by citizens directly threatened, or in the case of preventing a Felony.

This has happened many times in FL and more often than not the citizen defending him or her self is headed home after some brief questioning.

The news coverage of the Martin case conveyed very little of FL state law to the nation.

      @THXLL38

Your so called training has done nothing but strip you of reason, and probably any gut feeling you may have ever had.

You say that while driving he was in no immediate threat. Why does a threat have to be immediate? He was under threat, as was shown when he finally pulled over. Whether he pulled over in his driveway or in some random field, the threat became immediate then. So with your “training” what would you have done, just drive until your car ran out of gas? Or perhaps drive to a police station, at which point your pursuer would leave you alone for sure, but perhaps remember your car and your plate, and look to be more careful following you the next time he spots you?

And what if he did have a phone. If he called the cops, what would they do? ” Hi 9-11, I think someone is following me.” Righto. Even if dispatch were to believe it and send cops, they can’t pull someone over just because you say they were following you. It is not illegal to follow someone!

If this brave responsible man was “trained” like you, he would have passed the buck to some other sucker who would eventually become that criminal’s victim. Instead he trusted his gut, trusted in God, and took care of business, and now there is one last degenerate on the streets.

      no thanks to you.

I was always taught that you don’t pick a fight with a senior citizen because they’re too old to fight so they just shoot you. Need to teach that lesson in the schools. Senior citizens are also less likely to worry about long term imprisonment. Exactly how long is life in prison going to be for an 86 yr old anyway? Guy was probably a WWII or Korea vet. After either of those two experiences, prison would be a walk in the park.

Of course there is the case of the 80+ yr old WWII Marine vet on vacation in Costa Rica a couple of years ago. When three knife wielding banditos boarded the tour bus and demanded money, the Marine (once a Marine, always a Marine) grabbed one of the thugs and, using the hand to hand combat skills he’d learned in basic training over 60 years earlier, snapped the punk’s neck. The other two wannabe robbers decided that they had picked the wrong bus to rob and ran away.

Fun Fact: Upon awaking in critical care Hollingsworth admitted “Last time I tried this in 2008 I had a gun and bullet proof vest. But apparently that’s against the law. so this time i did it with intimidation and look where it landed me” he went onto say “I didn’t vote for Obama so people can own guns and defend themselves. Hey a man has to earn a living if crime pays the bills so be it.

I think you didn’t quite articulate what you were intending to say. Maybe you meant to say, “he voted for Obama so people could not defend themselves”? Please clarify, because your original statement does not make sense.

But I think I know what you meant to say.

Fun Fact: no I got it exactly right, I meant what I said and said what I meant you see it’s funny because he is an un armed criminal who listened to Obama and tried to rob armed citizens and he is complaining because its not fair that the intended victim was armed. And in 2008 he actually was robbing people with a bulletproof vest and a gun but now in 2013 he did it with out those and ended up in intensive care.

Gut shots can be pretty effective. The punk, if he does not die, may have to carry a poop bag on him for the rest of his lfe.

The only charges should be attempted robbery. Should have aimed about 6-8 inches higher.

Really? shot 4 rounds and only hit the guy once….in the abdomen? Two rounds left in the chamber should have gone in the chest. Dead men can’t sue.

all the more reason to have high capacity magazines….pistols are not all that accurate. Don’t know about a 38 special….but I got a .380 auto and at 5 yards, I’m not that accurate. Now, my 1911-A1 .45, I’m pretty accurate, but that’s only 7+1 as well. And when the adrenaline is running high, who knows how accurate you are going to be. Fortunately, I have not been in that situation; but my firing drills are always double tap, reassess, then double tap again.

Another drill live fire drill I do is the quick draw close to my body…still double tap. But that is just drill, and again, I have never had to draw in a life threatening situation. And I hope I never will. But I practice often.

I *LOVE* this! 81 years old, so he wouldn’t have had a chance against a 28 year old….even if the young man wasnt armed, the kid could have easily snapped the 81 year old in half. Good job old-timer!

KEATON! Obviously, you will defend the 28 year old…what say you Mr. 8 cylinder brain that only fires on 3 cylinders?

I know MK…..I’m willing to give him 3 cylinders as a benefit of the doubt…but a mechanic may come back and say the engine is just plain shot.

      Very nice follow up!

Have you noticed that Keaton has gone REAL quiet when it comes to defending gun control in the last week or so?

I think he may be reconsidering his position. Perhaps he may have bought some new spark plugs and doing a little troubleshooting on his carborator?

He was wise to reserve two rounds. Now, if he had a firearm that had a 30 round mag…I say fire 15 and reserve the other 15 just in case there was a follow up car with more young thugs.
