Hacker Collective Anonymous Calls for ‘Mass Street Action’ to Avenge Death of 16-Year-Old Shot and Killed by NYPD
Riots broke out Monday night and more could be coming Tuesday, if calls by the hactivist collective Anonymous are answered, over the death of a 16-year-old who was killed by NYPD officers Saturday in Brooklyn.

Kimani Gray was shot and killed by undercover police officers in the East Flatbush neighborhood, according to the New York Times. Police claim Gray, who was with a group but distanced himself from them, pointed a .38-caliber Rohm revolver at the plain clothes officers causing them to open fire. NYPD chief spokesperson Paul Browne said, according to the Times, that Gray did not fire the weapon, which was recovered loaded at the scene.
A vigil for mourning community members was held Monday but turned violent around 8:30 p.m., according to DNAInfo. DNAInfo reported a NYPD source saying some in the crowd were throwing bottles at police and as the scene escalated, a Rite Aid drug store was looted.
DNAInfo reported one of the vigil organizers, Sandra Mitchelin, saying the teenagers in the crowd became violent when no elected officials attended the mourning event.
“The kids, they retaliate because they want their voice to be heard,” Mitchelin told DNAInfo. “They’re frustrated. Not even the police commissioner or the mayor. Nobody came out… And he was a baby!”
City Councilman Jumaane Williams at this point came onto the scene. Williams issued some of the following tweets regarding the vigil turned violent:
I’m in the middle of the riot action at Church and Snyder in my district. Right now, things are tense. Young people have expressed anger.
— Jumaane D. Williams (@JumaaneWilliams) March 12, 2013
Tonight was a peaceful vigil that devolved into a riot. The youth in this community have no outlets for their anger, no community center. — Jumaane D. Williams (@JumaaneWilliams) March 12, 2013
The crowd is getting smaller. I only wish I had gotten here a few moments sooner, before the riot began. — Jumaane D. Williams (@JumaaneWilliams) March 12, 2013
@xylonex @occupythemob “Riots are the language of the unheard” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (I too prefer peaceful protest) — Jumaane D. Williams (@JumaaneWilliams) March 12, 2013
Although the riots Monday night were dispersed, the loosely tied hactivist collective Anonymous has called for “mass street action” Tuesday:
CALLS FOR MASS STREET ACTION: Tuesday night, for #NYPD killing of 16 year old #KimaniGray #BrooklynProtest #FTP #YAN twitter.com/57UN/status/31…
— Anonymous (@YourAnonNews) March 12, 2013
Anonymous has also already taken some retaliatory action against the NYPD, claiming to leak a list of police phone numbers. Only, as @xylonex pointed out (via The Move Right) on Twitter, the phone numbers are publicly available precinct numbers not technically then constituting a leak.

Here is a screenshot of the “leak” posted on Pastebin by members of Anonymous. (Image: The Move Right)
@xylonex has also been engaging in a conversation with one of the Anonymous Twitter accounts over the protest they are calling for Tuesday. @xylonex is saying while she supports peaceful protests, she can’t get behind Anonymous on their call for “mass action” thinking it is inciting violence in the streets.
As for the shooting of Gray, there are some conflicting reports as to what really happened that night to cause police to fire 11 total shots. NYPD spokesperson Browne told the New York Times that the officers on duty identified themselves and asked Gray to show his hands, at which point he allegedly pointed the revolver.
Gray’s sister, 19-year-old Mahnefah Gray, on the other hand claims that her brother was fixing his belt and noted, according to the Times, that no one ever knew 16-year-old to own a gun.
Watch this WPIX report with witness accounts:
The Wall Street Journal reported law enforcement saying Gray had three arrests with adult charges for stolen property, which was not known by the officers involved in the fatal shooting. NBC New York, on the other hand, reported that Gray had four arrests, one for grand larceny.
Here’s NBC New York’s report:
To the Wall Street Journal, Browne said, ”[the] overarching question on whether a shooting is justified or not is whether an officer or some other person is in imminent danger.”
NBC New York reported that an investigation into the fatal shooting of the teen is underway. It also stated the officers involved were taken to the hospital for trauma and tinnitus.

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 9:50amAnonymous represents the worst of a ‘pure democracy’ where majority vote directly hurts a minority… does so without consideration or awareness of all of the facts, and argues for actions that cannot be taken back once made, that do not actually impact whatever sleight is imagined, and which create new problems that have to be dealt with.
while their treatment of the Westboro cult has been humorous, one can never forget that it would be too easy to become such a victim if your actions/ beliefs/ statements run contrary to their own.

The Left has attracted all of the angry misfits of society , but the Democrats hide these core nasty dudes until they can create their desired ” American Autumn/ Spring/ Summer whatever . ” Am sure that is the plan which they threatened in the NYT way back in 2008 ! Our little anarchists – many posing as the Ron Paul Crowd….divide and conquer..then destroy and burn ! ( they are NOT Libertarians . They are the young, angry, poop on cop car anarchists )

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 9:47amI tend to side with Anonymous, but on this issue I just can’t. If it comes out the kid with a .38 pointed it at police, well, it’s kinda common sense not to do that regardless them (depending on the situation) violating your rights. Had the kid been unarmed I would expect the officers to be charged, and outrage if the city didn’t file charges, but at this point it sounds like there are still 3 sides to the story. And even ‘if’ I couldn’t justify ‘taking to the streets’ as it were with the kid being armed. 16 is a bit young nowadays to be carrying a gun. (Again common sense) Couple that with society has turned the majority irresponsible for their own actions, and even worse holding people accountable appropriately.

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 10:05amThat’s easy to say when you are living in a nice, comfortable, & safe environment. These neighborhoods are rife with criminal activity and children younger than this “inner city yout” carry, fire, and murder people with guns. This isn’t some innocent kid standing around or walking back from school. There was an issue where police were called. Anytime one of these hoodlums get killed by police, there is a call to riot because it’s “white people’s law” and even if the officers were black, they are considered traitors. You, and people like you, have no idea the kind of tribal mentality that is going on in the inner cities. I know, because you think there is a possibility that the cops were in the wrong and there is a grand conspiracy afoot. When you get closer to a black neighborhood than the Cosby Show and your two black friends, you can comment on city life. Otherwise, keep you white bread opinions to yourself because you only succeed in making the situation worse.

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 10:18amBUT NEW YORK IS A GUN FREE ZONE! New york has the strictest gun control laws in the nation yet gangsters, crooks, robbers and the like still obtain and use firearms. The old adage, “WHEN GUNS ARE OUTLAWED, ONLY THE GOVERNMENT AND THE OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS” is applicable in New York and everywhere else in the country. The naitonal media rarely tells of the law abiding shop owner who is gunned down in a robbery committed by some 16 year old gang member and hisfriends. They rarely tell of the homeowner or lone woman who saved their life and the life of their children by having a handgun.
Yes, it is truly tragic that a 16 year old boy had to die, just because he was stupid. Anyone who points a gun at a law officer, whether it is loaded or not, can only expect the worst possible outcome. The officer doesn’t know the intent of the person holding the gun. The officer MUST act before the person can fire at him. That is called SELF DEFENSE!!! If the officer had waited and if that kid had pulled the trigger, then what? A dead officer or severely wounded, maybe crippled for life?

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 1:35pmMelika, you assume far too much, you have no clue what I have or have not seen. And I thought all the gun laws there in that inner city would’ve made it safe, but apparently according to you, inner cities where gun laws are strongest suffer the most crime. Article says undercover cops, doesn’t say they were called… People like me unaware of the tribal mentality? You don’t know me to be able to make that statement. I scrutinize cops as much as perps. I’ve spent far more time in a innercity than you would imagine, and people do tend to act considerably less civilized there, I also know it’s a result of the inhabitants of that area and the policies of the people they elect in charge. So in the end their own doing. Meanwhile me and the other folks with this “white bread” opinion don’t have the same issues as most places outside of innercities are civil enough sans the criminals, which apparently according to you is what the majority of the innercity population consists of.
I can comment on it all I want, if you hear it or not is up to you.
Btw why is it I only get to have 2 black friends??? Can’t it be at least 6? That would be more accurate… lol

Posted on March 12, 2013 at 9:42amGlad I left NYC.
If he was running for his life, as the witnesses state, then at least some of the bullets would be in his back.
If, as the police state, he had the gun out and pointed at the police, then this is a case of ‘too stupid to live’ accidental suicide by cop.
I’ll wait and see what the evidence tells, because the real evidence will tell.
Mass street action? Really?
Annonymous doesn’t care for this kid. They want anarchy and could care less how many inner city blacks they sacrifice in order to get it.
MLK knew that riots harmed the cause. He routinely left any of his followers in jail if they resisted in ANY physical way to the police, while protesting. Just ask his Niece. He let her stay a few nights in jail for a lot less than what happened here.
Peaceful protest is ultimately the only thing that has lasting POSITIVE impact.
