Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., has decided to remove Chick-fil-A from the campus food court. This development comes after the university’s gay and lesbian community intensely protested the restaurant’s presence in the wake of CEO Dan Cathy’s comments last year about same-sex marriage.
A recent tweet sent from the Emory Wheel’s official account (an independent student newspaper on campus) confirms that Chick-fil-A will no longer be a part of the campus’ fast-food offerings. The outlet’s message read, “Chick-fil-a to be removed from Cox Hall this Summer as part of FACE’s new Cox Hall layout.”
The brief comment does not cite the anti-gay controversy as the reasoning for the restaurant’s removal.
The university’s motivation is unclear, but it’s no secret that gay advocates have placed intense pressure on Emory’s leadership over the past six months. While it can’t be definitively stated that the university is bowing to the pressure, that’s the assumption being made by many left-of-center outlets.
Here’s how ThinkProgress broke down the happenings:
Since the full extent of Chick-fi-A’s anti-gay beliefs and giving fully came to light last summer, student leaders protested the continued presence of a franchise in the campus’s food court. In December, even the Student Government Association passed a resolution opposing Chick-fil-A. Ultimately, campus administrators issued a thoughtful statement acknowledging the stigma attached to the company, but explaining it was not grounds to cancel the contract. The students vowed not to back down, and now it seems Chick-fil-A will not be coming back to campus next year.

Considering the discussion surrounding Chick-fil-A’s removal (Pizza Hut is being nixed as well), Michael Sacks, co-chair of the Food Advisory Committee at the school, claims that politics wasn’t at the heart of the matter.
“A chicken sandwich isn’t very popular, so we want to do a burger place,” Sacks said in an interview with Talk WSB. ”It’s kind of unfortunate that people very easily jump to the conclusion that Chick-fil-A’s political views were the reason we got rid of them, but that was not our intention at all.”
While certainly not the first university to come under pressure, Emory is, most notably, the most recent to expel the restaurant (again, we’re not sure politics was the reason). Regardless of Emory’s reasoning for removing Chick-fil-A, ThinkProgress calls the event a “victory” for gay and lesbian students — a conclusion that many free-speech advocates are likely to reject.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 5:59pmOne thing we know for sure is that Emory Universtiy does not respect diversity of ideas. It is apparently another single issue institution that pressures the students into a funnel that leads to only simple minded thinking. It seems that such an institution should be very inexpensive since it only presents one side of all arguments.

The Bible is the truth and the world is collapsing to the pressure of Satan and his goal to destroy the seed of man. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Satan has worked to pervert man from the beginning. The two biggest tools he uses are homosexuality, and abortion. That is the truth. God flooded the earth saving only Noah and his family because the rest of the world’s population had fallen to the depravity of Satan. Then God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of their perversions and sin. Never forget the fall of the Roman Empire and the lifestyles they were living when they collapsed. We and the rest of the world are next. Biblical end times prophecies are coming to fruition right before our eyes all you have to do is read the news and know the prophecies. Technology is moving at a break neck pace, the reality of one world government is right around the corner. These things are prophecied as well as many many others. If you really want the truth turn to Jesus, study the bible. That’s the only place you will find the truth in this world.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 6:40pmRJJ and Captain. the certified hate group is the FRC. They seek to overturn hate crime laws against gays and abolish them from the military. Their leader has “researched” the gay issue. (all of his research has since been discredited) And his finding were that The gay rights movement’s ultimate goal is to “legitimize child-adult homosexual sex.” The organization has also said in a pamphlet that “One of the primary goals of the homosexual rights movement is to abolish all age of consent laws and to eventually recognize pedophiles as the ‘prophets’ of a new sexual order.”
Sounding pretty similar to the WBC huh RJJ? But thats not it!
Cameron told The (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Gazette that he believed homosexuality should be criminalized in America and that he was fine with a proposed bill in Uganda that would punish some gay sexual acts with death. He has also said that gays and lesbians undergo a “public shaming” of some kind…
So RJJ… just out of curiosity what would you classify as a hate group if this isn’t it?
Coupled with this Chick-fil-a donates regularly to groups who claim, among other things, that homosexuality is a mental disease.

As far as repealing laws that provide gays with “special kid gloved treatment” then I do agree. Making the activity criminal I do disagree. I do feel that the activity is a sin withing the eyes of our Lord, but would never actively lift a finger against anybody who is gay. Well, with the exception of those who I had in the past arrested who molested young male children. And no, in no way were they hetero. Maybe Bi, but never fully hetero. Like I said, I believe it to be a sin, but in the eyes of the Lord, we are all sinners and can be forgiven. Believe me, you and I do not think on the same plane, so do not try to equate my train of thought with yours. Not saying you are wrong, just different. BTW, I have no hate in my heart for anybody on this planet. I simply disagree with some. Another thing, my wife of many years do not see eye to eye on some subjects. Mar. 13, 2013 at 11:32amThe reason for its removal was probably because of both reasons: Low sales (bad for business) and its stance on marriage. While the University had earlier said that they couldn’t kick the company off campus for its views, it can make a business decision when it came to what stayed during the revamp of the food court. Honestly, business probably was down on the university campus. The students were probably boycotting the venue because they were against its views, or avoiding the venue because of harassment from those you disagree with the companies views.
Thus, because of Chick-fil-a’s views, which would be widely unpopular on the average university campus, it’s revenue fell and was axed from the court due to numbers. So, while the university can say it made the decision based purely on numbers, the pro-gay movement can claim victory because most of the students on campus in the end sided with the LGBT movement and avoided the venue.

Where do I begin? You take Biblical text out of context to suit your purpose. You then state that numerous studies that are ant-gay have been proven wrong. Then you just drool out of the side of your mouth like a typical leftist brain dead liberal.
I will happily debate you over all the points mentioned, and I can show you data where homosexuality is detrimental to society and to the person who suffers from it. And yes, I have seen the response materials from leftist groups, organizations, and so-called University “experts.” In many of the rebuttal pieces, I find weak argumentation and hyperbole on a scale that if these reports were turned in to an University professor from a reputable University, it would receive a D at the best.
Homosexuality is a mental disorder. How does your side respond to this statement? You call me a homophobe, yet I have not mentioned any form of punishment on anyone who is a homosexual.
On the contrary: I believe they need to placed back into therapy. But this won’t happen, since the American Psychiatric Association was taken over in a massive extortion and dead threat laden coup in the 70′s.
Please look it up. The data is at your fingertips. Read online how prominent members of the APA were physically threatened.
This is how the left, not the right, responds: with pain, coercion, lies, intimidation, and even death of those who oppose them. Its the left thats violent.
Now go away, you nutjob, and get informed!

As almost always when the title is a question, the answer is “No… but let’s talk about it to stir up controversy!” From the article:
“Considering the discussion surrounding Chick-fil-A’s removal (Pizza Hut is being nixed as well), Michael Sacks, co-chair of the Food Advisory Committee at the school, claims that politics wasn’t at the heart of the matter.
“A chicken sandwich isn’t very popular, so we want to do a burger place,” Sacks said in an interview with Talk WSB. ”It’s kind of unfortunate that people very easily jump to the conclusion that Chick-fil-A’s political views were the reason we got rid of them, but that was not our intention at all.””

Fair enough, though I’d note that the SGA resolution calling for their removal was passed over 4 months ago according to links in the article. Combined with the fact that Pizza Hut is also being removed… it’s quite possible that they just aren’t big sellers compared to a McDonald’s or a Burger King.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:24pmI haven’t been to Burger King for many years. I was in the mood for a good ol’
“Whopper” the other day so I stopped in to find they are using the same grotesque “meat?” as McD’s.
When I feel brave enough to eat it, I always feel a little weird afterwards. After waiting approxiamately 15 minutes for my “Whopper”, I was ready to bail but for the fact that I had already paid. I should have followed my instincts. Conversely, my town just got a new “Chik-fil-A”.
The service was incredibly friendly, prompt, and the food was delicious. I felt like I was at the county fair, being served by a local Boy Scout Troop, or Knights of Columbus. The owners beliefs and management techniques are clearly translated into the local restaurnts. Thanks Chik-fil-A, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out BK.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 2:47pmI really don’t think this has anything to do with Chik-fil-A’s politics. Around 5 years ago my university food court switched out Chik-fil-A for Burger King because of the exact reasoning they say here: Burgers are more popular. And that was way before everybody knew about Chik-fil-A’s owners donating money to anti-gay hate groups.

As a social libertarian I don’t think the government has any place telling people who they can and can’t marry, so I support marriage equality. These groups try to prevent it. The Constitution says all men are created equal, so I don’t support any type of people trying to oppress any others.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:16pmSee what I mean GONZO? Look at what the troll did next “marriage equality”. It doesnt’ dawn on the lefty troll that homosexuals enjoy EXACTLY the same rights everyone else does in this country. So it has to use the euphemisms it’s keepers tell it to us. These are tailored to appeal to emotions and to distract from the aberrant nature of homosexuality.
“Marriage equality”….but it’s not really “equality” is it? When 64% of new cases of HIV in this country are attributed to less than 2% of the population..that’s not equality..that’s an overrepresentation of more than 2000%. Additionally..higher incidences of depression, drug use and STDs. In fact…we’re seeing the rise of a drug resistant strain of gonhorrea among homosexual males in this country..which ironically makes them even more susceptible to HIV infection. This is ugly and abnormal side of homosexuality that CHARPER can’t bring itself to acknowledge because it’s been trained to believe homosexuals are noble and the best of us. And so we get “marriage equality” and I’m sure the lefty troll will let fly even more euphemisms before we’re through here.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:54pmWoah, AVENGERK, you have some really strong opinions about what two people do in their personal lives that doesn’t affect you whatsoever. So if I’m interpreting your post correctly, gay marriage is bad because gay men have higher rates of some diseases? Well, assuming that’s true, unless you’re a gay man I don’t really see how that affects you. Black people have higher rates of sickle cell anemia, maybe they shouldn’t marry each other, according to your logic?
Also, I hate to break it to you, but gay people do not have the same rights as straight people throughout this country because they can’t marry the people they love, which means the person who should be their spouse is often denied the same privaleges and legal benefits straight married people get. Sorry, but that’s not equal. I know your religion says it’s wrong and you think gay marriage is icky, but that’s not a legit reason to discriminate against someone.
Honestly I find it really amusing how people who don’t support gay marriage get so enraged over this topic. What do you think is going to happen if same-sex marriage becomes legal throughout the US? Is some government thug going to come force you to divorce your wife and marry a dude? Straight people’s lives will stay exactly the same.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:57pmThe Southern Poverty Law Center is a Hate Group. The KKK are a hate group. The Black Panthers are a hate group. Not supporting gay marriage is not a hate group. They”re not “opinions” champ..theyr’e stats from the center for disease control.
And that’s the point CHARPER…they’re not keeping it in their “personal lives” are they champ?
You recall Obama’s Orwellianly named “Czar of Safe Schools” Kevin Jennings? He started a homosexual advocacy group called “GLSEN” specifically put together to target school kids.
Recently GLSEN recommended that school kids be taught extreme sex acts like f#sting. They also endorse “experimenting” and “gender choice” for school kids…so no little militant lefty…they’re not keeping it in their “personal lives” at all. Oh and Jennings is on record as an admirer of Harry Hay. Hay was a proponent of NAMBLA.
Bygamists can’t marry the people they love either champ. Your thoughts?
Oh and thanks for proving me right..I told GONZO you’d thow around a few more euphemisms and you offered the tired old “people they love” line.
Ummm, not just a few diseases champ…higher incidences of depression, drug use and promiscuity as well. This is all verifiable if you want to pursue the issue. It doesn’t affect me directly champ..it affects society as a whole when the aberrant nature of homosexuality is deliberately ignored so as to make homosexuality appear benign and harmless as you just attempted here.
I’m expecting a few more euphemisms from you before you run away.

This would be the time for other fast food vendors to remove themselves from the college. To paraphrase… “They came for them, but I did nothing. When they came for me, no one did anything.”
It’s unlikely archeologists will unearth a petrified chicken sandwich thousands of years from now and equate its symbolism to gay rights.

Something that would appeal to just about everyone, like a hickory farms, so gays especially could have their sausage and eat it too, a 10 oz summer sausage. There are so many varieties. There’s turkey sausage, beef sausage, goat sausage, mule sausage, horse sausage (I understand once you’ve gone equestrian, you never go back). It sounds like a winner to me. In the old days the Univesity would be putting in a real chick-fil-a, that would be a Hooters, so one could enjoy suds (beer), chicks and eatable food, all at one sitting. Personally I prefer hooters. For fast food Chick-il-a isn’t bad though, except if you’re a rad-gay.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 2:51pmYou can have whatever world view you want, but as soon as you start using your worldview as an excuse to oppress somebody else, you’ve crossed the line. You don’t have to LIKE gay people (or any group of people), you just don’t get to discriminate against them because of it.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 2:57pmAnd nobody is discriminating C. But I guess you’d have to read deeper than your Party Boilerplate Talking Points to know that.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:02pmCAVALLO…this is why it won’t end with federal ratification of homosexual marriage. It will only embolden them. They are not about “live and let live” they are about forcing society to accept them on their terms..or else.
Look at what happened to eHarmony recently. A court action forced the CEO of the dating website to open another site to cater to homosexuals, against his beliefs. Were homosexuals being denied dating websites? Even a cursory view of the internet reveals hundreds of sites catering to not only their dating desires but to their routine practice of anonymous, no stings, immediate sex. There’s absolutely no shortage of sites for them. So why force eHarmony to comply? There’s no other reason but to eradicate resistance to their agenda.
As I said..this won’t end with “homosexual marriage”. They will then use that decision to cry “discrimination” to force everyone (including religious groups) that doesn’t buy into their delusions to bend to their will or go out of business. At that point real and genuine rights are being infringed upon, not the imaginary “rights” of militant homosexuals.
Gay Inc is a very mean spirited, obsessive and cruel little group of spiteful militants and their enablers.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:04pmChick-fil-A the restaurant isn’t discriminating against anybody, but the owners donate some of Chick-fil-A’s profits to organizations that try to suppress gay people’s rights. You can call me whatever you want, but I believe in equal liberty and equal rights, even marriage rights, for all Americans.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:31pmOh I see CHARPER..so what you’re saying is that even though Chik Fil A the business doesn’t discriminate against anyone…the personal beliefs of it’s owner make it a target for a campaign of smear and intimidation nonetheless.
Goebbels is crying a tear of joy in hell right now for you..he’s so proud of you.
A word of advice…perhaps you need to again review the media matters/”it gets better”/anti-”bullying” materials your keepers gave you because your mask keeps slipping way to easily. In sports terminology it’s called “unforced errors”.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 6:43pmprob is cfa never discriminated. nobody not 1 person has ever come forward to claim that cfa made it a hostile work or resteraunt enviroment. its the gays that have the problem not cfa. they want to force everyone to tolerate their lifestyle but allow no toleration for anyone who disagrees. its obvious it was political. nobody said the food was bad, its very good, but the queers on campus say they felt ‘upset’ by thei pressence of cfa.this was totally in their own minds and part of a coordinated effort to force someone with beliefs different than thenm off campus. looks like the fruits only want 1 kind of co….chicken in their mouths…or fish tacos. but i dont believe for a second its because they want another burger place

Mar. 12, 2013 at 2:28pmAlways remember that the Left will tolerate no difference of opinion. If you look at this objectively, Chik (for short) discriminates against nobody at all, everybody is welcome and served, nobody is asked about their status and even if the status is known they still serve you with a smile.
BUT….
Their owner believes in the Bible and the literal interpretation of marriage, and informed a Christian publication of this.
The results are predictable of course. There is no tolerance of beliefs that differ from Orthodox Progressivism. At all. Ever. Those who do not conform to the dogma of the cult, must be destroyed.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 2:43pmThe Tolerant Left is anything but. They’re only “tolerant” of the short list of politically acceptable “lifestyle differences” that fit their agenda of “tolerance”. Ask them how they feel about Christians, and watch them foam at the mouth crying for their execution. But, leftist hatred is acceptable hatred. They’re doing it “for the good of the collective”.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:05pmI’m not sure that this is the case here though, Jefferson. According to the article, the building is getting a new layout and they’re renegotiating vendors. Chik-fil-A wasn’t as popular as burgers – Pizza Hut is getting booted too and no one’s blaming that on gay marriage politics.
If this decision had happened in the weeks or months following Dan Cathy’s announcement and the subsequent political moshpit, then I’d see a clearer connection. But it’s been a long time since the summer of 2012; connecting the two now seems tenuous at best… especially given the rational reasons stated and PH also getting shut out.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 3:19pmI support Chik-Fil-A’s right to endorse whatever social stance they prefer but i don’t eat there because their chicken tastes and smells like burnt peanut butter.

Mar. 12, 2013 at 8:20pmEAST, I’m sorry to hear that. I rather like the taste of Chick-Fil-A but it may just be those in my area. I only visit a fast food restaurants a few times a year, and Chick-Fil-A maybe only once to three times a year. A bit salty for my tastes and I often ask for their waffle fries as well as those in other joints to be portioned before salting. Still, find them more desirable than other places out there.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 8:14amRJJ… you may be right about the localized product. I know they cook in peanut oil.. perhaps the peanut oil is different region to region.
Their waffle fries are awesome but i’m Bojangles all the way for my fast food chicken.
