Read the Letter Newtown Clergy Wrote to Congress Pushing for Gun Control: ‘Stop the Slaughter’

Clergy from Newtown, Conn., have collectively released a letter calling for an assault weapons ban in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that shook their community to its core.

In the letter, addressed to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the faith leaders made their urge for greater gun control measures known. Opening the note by acknowledging that it’s been less than three months since “the unspeakable tragedy” unfolded, the group went on to call for “Congress to pass comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation that will help stop the slaughter.”

Hailing from a diverse pool of theological perspectives (signatories included rabbis, pastors, priests and imams), the religious leaders noted that their faith traditions call them to “protect the weak” and that new legislation would be an avenue for achieving this goal.

“To see the rising incidence of gun violence from Chicago to Newtown, Camden to Aurora, Detroit to Tucson — and how that violence particularly targets the young and the poor, especially in America’s urban communities — and yet to refuse to take the steps we know would reduce harm is a violation of religious values so severe that we are compelled to speak out,” the group wrote.

While noting that no actions can bring back the lives lost, the letter goes on to claim that Congress must take action to prevent tragedy. Among the targets of these faith leaders’ attention are: a ban on so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, universal background checks and an “end to gun trafficking.”

“As faith leaders, while we fully support laws that we believe will increase gun safety, we also believe that the larger underlying issue behind violence is spiritual: how we view our obligations to each other in light of our role in God’s creation,” the letter continues.

Read the letter in its entirety, below:

United States Senate
Committee on the Judiciary
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senators,

It’s been less than three months since our community experienced the unspeakable tragedy of the murder of children and educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

As the clergy leaders of Newtown, joined by clergy colleagues from across the nation, we have witnessed the scourge of gun violence in our neighborhoods, and we call on Congress to pass comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation that will help stop the slaughter. The moral mandate to protect the weak in our care is clear and present in all of our faith traditions. Our varied faith traditions teach us to seek the peace of the city, to love our neighbor, and to cherish human dignity. To see the rising incidence of gun violence from Chicago to Newtown, Camden to Aurora, Detroit to Tucson – and how that violence particularly targets the young and the poor, especially in America’s urban communities – and yet to refuse to take the steps we know would reduce harm is a violation of religious values so severe that we are compelled to speak out.

Nothing any of us do will bring back the victims murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As a nation we must do all we can to prevent the next tragedy. We pray that you will vote for meaningful gun violence prevention laws that include a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, enforceable universal background checks, an end to gun trafficking and prosecution of straw purchasers.

After the news crews and cameras leave, after the rest of the nation turns away and resumes their normal routines, it is we who are asked to answer why this happened; to bind up the brokenhearted; and to explain why nothing in Newtown or our many communities will ever be the same again.

As faith leaders, while we fully support laws that we believe will increase gun safety, we also
believe that the larger underlying issue behind violence is spiritual: how we view our obligations to each other in light of our role in God’s creation. We draw from a wellspring of tradition that will spark off a spiritual awakening in America that will transform us into a culture of compassion, reconciliation and civility. As faith leaders, we commit ourselves to fostering a culture of peace to complement and serve as a foundation for any proposed gun legislation.

The slaughter of innocence in Newtown awakened our nation to the tragedy of gun violence
throughout our land and we shall neither slumber nor sleep. Rather, by tireless commitment, Page 2 of 42 loving hearts and the sustaining promise of our many faiths, we believe that Newtown shall be remembered as the bridge to a new and kinder world.

More than 4,000 faith leaders across America signed on to the letter as well, offering support to the Newtown clergy in their quest for increased gun control measures (the complete list of religious leaders is here).

PICO, a network of faith-based community groups, and Sojourners, progressive Pastor Jim Wallis’ organization, were involved in having the letter repurposed as an advertisement that appeared in the Des Moines Register on Monday.

    And then the Imams said:

Yes. Disarm them. I mean: Just give us those AR-15′s. We shall turn them into plowshares by marking them up 50% and selling them to a Middle Eastern middle man we know of who makes plowshares out of AR-15′s for a living and is so poor he lives in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and his wife can only afford a little Channel and Dolce Gabbana and Versace. But, yes, we will ship them through our own drone program, I mean, cheaply and if you just all turn over your AR-!5′s to us we will surely dispose of them peacefully and I can assure you that yes, we love Jesus too, and of course, though he was a Jew, the descendant of pigs and dogs, we still love him, but getting back to weapons, we will disarm, I mean take all these weapons off your hands, now don’t trouble yourselves you Western Decadent Sons of Satan, I mean all you lovely Americans and peace, love brotherhood, and inter =faith dialogue, and yes, we can all just get along, if you bow to Allah, and did I say that out loud? Oh , my bad. I mean Allahu Akbar and oh my goodness, did I say that out loud? and yes, Interfaith dialogue and one ness and peace, and love, and groovy and no i don’t believe in Taquiyya and Abrogation unless you mean, I mean, in the strictest sense of Jihad, it is a struggle but, of course, no, peace, love, brotherhood. Can you A-holes just turn over your AR-15′s now so my brother’s wife in Riyadh can make the Channel sale going on right now? Amen and Al-Akbar!

How very interesting these “clergy” notice the “rising gun violence”. ALL stats show “gun violence” is decreasing at a fast rate. More people are killed with cars, hammers, hands and feet than with guns. Methinks these “clergy” should focus more on their congregation and stop being politically active. I thought libs hated it when religious leaders try to influence their flock politically? Oh, yeah, that’s right…these are liberal “clergy”. They’re not bound by those rules.

Tell us if God didn’t not want us to have guns why did he give us the ability to make them. Someone tell this quote unquote religious clergiman that you don’t stop sin by removing the temptation you stop it by changing the man not the surrounding.
And you don’t stop gun violence by disarmiong the lawful you stop it by punishing the unlawful.
Here a crazy idea hang those that commit these act when there is no doubt of their action no trial just ahnk them. And those when there isn’t 100% proof at first should have their day in court…If found guilty hang them as well. No more lifers if you murder someone in America it’s a one way express ticket to the ultimate judge of man. Don’t allow these people to continue to affect society MAKE EXAMPLES OUT OF THEM INSTEAD

I suggest looking at the signatories of the letter to see if any church leaders in your area have signed this letter.

The list is available by clicking on the red “released a letter” phrase in the article.

I would be interested in knowing anything about these individuals and/or the churches they lead.

These people do not support the Word of God. They are Liberals. And Democrats. They infiltrated the churches years ago. They are on a “political agenda” with the church and USE the Bible to their “political ends.” This is their REAL AGENDA. They “make up” all kinds of stuff about Jesus. That he was and is anti gun and anti self defense even though in Jesus’ time there were NO FIREARMS. They are all graduates of hippy schools (Berkeley) or East Coast Seminaries (Harvard and Yale) which have turned Jesus into some kind of peace loving hippy guru rabbi teacher who wouldn’t hurt a fly and on and on it goes with THEIR VAIN IMAGINATIONS and FANTASIES and UTOPIAN WORLD.

The LORD of the UNIVERSE expects you to defend yourself, your wife, your property, your land, your children, your country. He did not put you on this earth to roll over and die and let people wack your heads off, or your hands, or stone you, like the IMAMA”S Religion.

Jesus Christ killed 180,000 Assyrians in one night.

2 chronicals 32:21 And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed every mighty warrior, commander and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own children killed him there with the sword.

When he returns, he comes as the Lion of Judah, Lord of the Armies, as a Soldier.

Revalation 19:16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” 17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.” 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.

Jesus Christ is very comfortable with weaponry.

It shows an absolutely stunning ignorance bordering on treason to usurp the Constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms of the law-abiding as punishment for the sins of criminals.

It is certainly and significantly more the fault of a failure in leadership of these “moral leaders” in teaching morality in their own back yards than it is MY fault. Yet they seek to curtail MY rights and freedoms? With that kind of “logic” there is no wonder that they can’t lead their own flock, and that their flocks are diminishing. Y’all keep turning the “other cheek” and casting a blind eye to reality and the true underlying causes, and all you will guarantee are more funerals.

In the big picture on gun control we are looking at the Libs chipping away at our American Constitutional human rights, one piece at a time. The latest outrage that barely passed a Senate Judiciary panel (10 Dems to 8 Reps), is “chipping away” with a Universal Background Check for private sales. This is intended to provide a federal conduit for the eventual confiscation of all firearms in civilian hands. The Libs deny this truth but we know that they are liars and will stop at nothing to advance their dark agendas. Watch your back and vote in 2014.

worth noting though- my Catholic friends in Newtown tell me that the writers of this letter wanted all seven of the priests at St. Rose to sign this letter but six of them refused.

It doesn’t work that way, not if we all want to be free.

You see, what you advocate is the same tyranny humankind has lived under for most of its existence.

One group threatens another’s rights. They go to war. Which ever one wins strips the rights of the loser.

Over and over again we enslave each other.

How is your desire to strip them of their rights any better than their desire to strip you of yours?

Actually atheists have killed more people in history than any church group. While I disagree vehemently with theses mental midgets claiming to represent Christ…..that has nothing to do with death tolls. If you look at the truly major hitters when it comes to mass murder, look at Stalin, Lenin, Mao, Hitler, etc, etc. Even the so called “mass murderers” that are being used to sell this gun control garbage are almost totally liberal democrats…who tend to be somewhat less than dedicated Christians…..

Isn’t an islamic church siding with a christian church an oxymoron, I thought they just blew up christian churches with bombs strapped to kids. And I bet those christian pastors will the first to be praying to god they had a dang gun when a nutter with a gun turns up to cause havoc. On the bright side you can aleast have have a chance to not to get shot cause you can see the priick coming. Getting blown up naa not so much.

Simply remove the word gun and this sounds like a great resaon to stop abortions. “Our varied faith traditions teach us to seek the peace of the city, to love our neighbor, and to cherish human dignity. To see the rising incidence of gun violence from Chicago to Newtown, Camden to Aurora, Detroit to Tucson – and how that violence particularly targets the young and the poor, especially in America’s urban communities – and yet to refuse to take the steps we know would reduce harm is a violation of religious values so severe that we are compelled to speak out.”

“and how that violence particularly targets the young and the poor, especially in America’s urban communities”

    a) Newtown, Aurora, Littleton…not exactly poor communities.
    b) when it comes to these “slaughters” young = defenseless.

Watch the massacres increase after more gun laws are in place and the bad guys are emboldened.

We still haven’t seen one picture of the so-called Bushmaster rifle. The shell casings at the scene were reported as all S&W .40 and 9mm caliber. The AR-15 fires .223 rounds. A Bushmmaster can also handle the more powerful 5.56mm. The difference is in the ballistics. The .223 is a Remington and many 5.56mm are military grade bullets from Lake City, MO. At this juncture, for all we know the serial killer used a big knife. Can you imagine the fallout if it is proven that “Sandy Hook Line and Sinker” was made-up by the Libs to demonize guns? Don’t put anything past them and watch your back!

Look at the numbers (if you can get past your name calling first). Three funerals for 26 killed? Obviously you believe everything you’re being spoon fed by the lamebrain, mainstream media. Some of us think, and determine the facts through the truth and deductive reasoning. You’re all about anger and hate, as referenced by your rant. What you truly know about “Sandy Hook Line and Sinker” isn’t worth knowing.

Where are you getting those numbers?
St. Rose was holding multiple funerals per DAY for a week straight… and that is a FACT.

Just enforce the laws to keep guns out of criminals, mental patients hands. Do your back ground checks. And keep the federal government out of any decisions about guns. Punish the criminals, don’t let them out of prison, execute the murderers, and rapist.

What hypocrites, more people have died in the last 1000 years in the name of and because of misguided religion then will ever be killed by legally owned civilian firearms. This is what happens when you think with emotion and not reason. Where’s the letter to Congress from these morons on the hudreds of thousands of unborn babies aborted every year in this country because they had the audacity to be conceived. Once again hypocrites!

Also curious that this is exactly the same talking points the progressives are using to disarm Americans. I wonder if it was written by OFA?

“We pray that you will vote formeaningful gun violence prevention laws that include a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, enforceable universal background checks, an end to gun trafficking and prosecution of straw purchasers.”

So, your idea of protecting the weak is by disarming them and not their predators?

Do you protect sheep by removing the ram’s antlers? By removing the teeth of the sheep dog? The wolf and the lion have their weapons and they don’t look at your laws to see if they can keep their teeth and claws.

In order for us to protect ourselves, let’s drop all our weapons. What could possibly go wrong? It worked for the Jews in Nazi Germany. It worked for Christians in Japan. It worked for Ukrainians in the USSR, Buddhist Monks under the Khmer Rouge, American Colonists under King George…

Oh wait, all of those disarmed populaces were murdered relentlessly except the American Colonists – the only ones in that list that were not disarmed.

I am sick of all these people standing on a platform built of the coffins of dead kids and teachers, to spew their toxic rhetoric. You don’t like the 2nd Amendment and what it stands for, there is a process to repeal it. USE IT….OR SHUT THE EFF UP!!
