Six-Month-Old Girl Dies After Being Shot Multiple Times as Her Father Changed Her Diaper Outside Chicago Home

Six-month-old Jonylah Watkins and her father Jonathan were shot multiple times on Monday by an unknown gunman.

Jonylah’s father was changing her diaper in the front seat of the family minivan, which was parked in front of their Chicago home, when the gunman approached them and started shooting.

The little girl was shot five times. She died on Tuesday. Her father sustained wounds to his side, buttocks, and face. He is in serious (but stable) condition at Northwestern Hospital:

“Police are looking for the killer, who jumped into a blue van after the shooting on the city’s South Side and drove away,” CNN reports.

The gunman was “was firing at the father, and exclusively at the father,” according to Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

As of this writing, no one has stepped forward to help the police, according to McCarthy.

“We don’t have one individual who’s stepping up to help us,” he said. “We don’t have cooperating witnesses.”

The father, though in poor condition, was able to give a phone interview to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“I was trying to help. I was trying to help. I was trying to help her,” he said, referring to his daughter. “They told me she didn’t make it.”

Officer McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday that they haven’t ruled out gang violence.

“Police say Jonathan Watkins, the infant’s father, was the likely target in the shooting because he belongs to a gang and has a long criminal history,” CBS News reports.

Patricia McGowan, who lives near the shooting, weighed in on the tragedy [via NBC Chicago]:

There is always gunshots and crime in the neighborhood, always drug activity in the neighborhood. … It’s heartbreaking … We’re looking for a place to move out immediately because that could have easily been me coming from the bus.

      Nothing but cowardly, gutless gang trash on both sides of the weapon. It is disgusting that a baby’s life was taken thanks to the degenerate lifestyle her father and his enemies subscribe too. Then again, maybe it is merciful that the little girl passed into Gods arms now, rather than later…when her father would no doubt willingly hand her over to his “homies” to become just another gangbangers baby mama.

      That the pathetic citizens of Chicago haven’t the character or the courage to come forward is no surprise…they make me want to puke.

      Another Chicago shooting that has absolutely nothing to do with legal gun ownership, registration, or any of that garbage. Anybody want to bet it was a stolen gun, and probably a handgun? It’s like the roaring 20′s in Chicago again, except instead of Capone we got the Bloods, or Crips, or whatever moniker cowards use these days. Hey O, how about taking some of that $2 bil you’re giving Egypt and put some of it into putting cops with guns in your own hometown?

      This is just as much the fault of the father as it is the guy (or girl) that pulled the trigger. If you join a gang, you bring great danger to all of your family members. But of course, in this day and age, nobody is held accountable for their actions. It is all someone else’s fault.

      This baby did not ask to be born yet DADDY is part of a gang and knows that GANG life is very dangerous that leads to death or jail. This is all of the problem here in CHICAGO. LAWS do not matter to people who are raised in such a way that is SAVAGE. Numerous gang members & innocent people have been assaulted and or killed by the black or hispanic male gangbangers, END OF STORY.

      This violence perpetuates because the punishment is a life time of having free food,clothing,heating and air conditioning,cable t/v,free medical and dental,and free of all resposibilities.
      Hopw about we bring back a good ole fashion hanging tree and hang everyone commited of drive bys,and first degree murder. And not 20 years later but the same day they are convicted.

    This is blood on the hands of current Mayor Rahm Emanuel, both Mayors Daley, father and son, and any and all those intent on removing the God given right to defend self and family, etc.Thank you, government, for now intending to remove all of our rights. You are equally guilty just as if you held that gun. You are already guilty of abortion killing. Chicago citizens should be outraged that they cannot be trusted to arm themselves and rise up and use their voices. This is sickening and disheartening.       Another Victim of the drug war, WE love to blame the guns, racism, hate, education, but this is the result of the drug war, and here is why, what gives the gangs all the power they have? Money from drug sales. Legalize, tax and regulate them and we will turn these gang shooting to under the influence killings, which are by far less impacting that these block by block mini wars that white people don’t care about till it crosses the tracks. Earlier generations seen the problems with stopping booze sales, same thing happened, gangs, trafficking, mobs. yet they were able to say no this isn’t work, lets legalize it.

    So is this is what we can expect when the gun control freaks get their way by taking away the right to bear arms??? Yes in Chitcago this is what you get…Sad stories like these

    But not not in my town… Because I will not comply to this fraud government that lives under their own set of rules. I will never go unarmed because it says in the constitution that God gave me that right to protect myself and my family…

    I heard a different story… that the Father had LEFT the gang and had gotten a job, and was trying to get away from the gang life when he was shot for leaving the gang.

    Anyway, this is what I heard.. maybe more details will come out later?

      If you take is the correct one, and the Dad was trying to leave the gang for the straight life, that’s still sad. But, if one makes a choice to ‘leave the gang’ you must know they will be coming after you, to use your death as a deterent to other gang members thinking of leaving the ‘hood’. He should have left town if not the state. I know, easy for me to say, but now look who had to pay in full for his gang-curiosity and eagerness to be accepted?

    The mother was shot by gang members when she was pregnant with this child. Now more than six months later they didn’t miss the baby. Wonder how many this dad has shot in drive by’s?

    How sad. They are in my prayers. What Chicago needs is a really caring community organizer to work with the people to end the violence.
