Update: Read TheBlaze’s profile on the new pope – Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina (Pope Francis).
Below, find out more about this historic papal election.

VATICAN CITY (TheBlaze/AP) — Cardinals elected a new pope to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics on Wednesday, overcoming deep divisions to select the 266th pope in a remarkably fast conclave.
Tens of thousands of people who braved cold rain to watch the smokestack atop the Sistine Chapel jumped in joy when white smoke poured out, many shouting “Habemus Papam!” or “We have a pope!” – as the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica and churches across Rome tolled, signaling a pontiff had been chosen.
Watch live coverage, below:
The pope, whose identity isn’t yet known, is due to emerge from the loggia overlooking St. Peter’s Square to deliver his first words as the Bishop of Rome.
Elected on the fifth ballot, he was chosen in one of the fastest conclaves in years, remarkable given there was no clear front-runner going into the vote and that the church had been in turmoil following the upheaval unleashed by Pope Benedict XVI’s surprise resignation.
A winner must receive 77 votes, or two-thirds of the 115, to be named pope (if you want to know more about the process, go here).
The conclave played out against the backdrop of the first papal resignation in 600 years and revelations of mismanagement, petty bickering, infighting and corruption in the Holy See bureaucracy. Those revelations, exposed by the leaks of papal documents last year, had divided the College of Cardinals into camps seeking a radical reform of the Holy See’s governance and those defending the status quo.
WHO’S THE NEW POPE?
The names mentioned most often as “papabile” – a cardinal who has the stuff of a pope – include Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, an intellect in the vein of Benedict but with a more outgoing personality, and Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Canadian head of the Vatican’s important bishops’ office who is also scholarly but reserved like Benedict.
Here’s the Vatican’s announcement on Twitter:
Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Scherer is liked by the Vatican bureaucracy but not by all of his countrymen. And Cardinal Peter Erdo of Hungary has the backing of European cardinals who have twice elected him as head of the European bishops’ conference.
On the more pastoral side is Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston, the favorite of the Italian press, and Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the back-slapping, outgoing archbishop of New York who has admitted himself that his Italian is pretty bad – a drawback for a job that is conducted almost exclusively in the language.
Previously, TheBlaze has pondered who it might be. Here’s a list of potentials.
On another note, the pope’s Twitter account has now been changed. After Benedict left, it read “Sede Vacante.” Now, it has been switched back to “Pontifex.”

THE POPE WILL NEVER KNEW WHO VOTED FOR (AND AGAINST) HIM
One thing is sure – the new pope will never truly know who voted for him.
Cardinals used to sign their names to ballots, but stopped doing so “due to an old history of intrigues and tensions, when people used to fear the most serious reprisals for their choices,” says Michael Bruter, who teaches political science at the London School of Economics.
Even so, factions of cardinals will have made their views known during informal talks between votes.
Romain Lachat, a political scientist at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, says the formation of coalitions – where voting cardinals slowly rally around a man who may only be their second or third choice – is inevitable.
There is no formal process of elimination and cardinals can even vote for themselves – which may explain why conclaves often need more than one round of balloting to produce a pope.
See MSNBC’s coverage, below:
COMPARING THIS CONCLAVE TO PAST PAPAL ELECTIONS
In centuries past, conclaves dragged on for weeks and months, sometimes years. During a 13th-century conclave that stretched for weeks, a leading candidate died.
These days the discussions are much quicker. The pope was chosen in five rounds over two days.
The previous conclave that chose Benedict XVI went four rounds over two days before the Latin announcement rang out across St. Peter’s Square from the basilica’s balcony: “Habemus papam” – We have a pope!
The longest conclave of the last century went on for 14 rounds over five days, and yielded Pius XI – in 1922.
HOW’S THE VATICAN BEING SECURED AMID EXCITEMENT, CROWDS?
Throngs of the faithful are in St. Peter’s Square, ready to cheer the new pope when he steps out onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. The vast square in Rome is a sea of umbrellas, flags and chanting crowds.
The Vatican’s security force, known as the gendarmerie, is in charge of those inside the square, while Italian police handle crowd control just outside the Vatican’s boundaries. Security officers from both forces include plainclothes agents dressed up as tourists, watching for any unusual movement.
A tented field hospital went up near the Vatican before the conclave began.
There have been a few “trial runs” of crowd control. Pope Benedict XVI’s public audience drew so many people – some 150,000 – that there wasn’t enough space for all in the cobblestone square.
WHO MAKES THE POPE’S CLOTHING?
The pope’s new clothes were ready before he was.
The family-owned Gammarelli tailor shop, which has dressed popes for two centuries, had three sets of vestments – in small, medium and large – prepared for the naming of the new pontiff.
The papal outfits were on display in the window of the small wood-paneled store nestled in the shadow of the Pantheon, where the family moved in 1850 from the original founded just around the corner in 1798. They were delivered to the Vatican and left in a room next to the Sistine Chapel, ready for the new pope to change into his new clothes.
The pre-made looks haven’t always fit. In 1958, the rotund John XXIII appeared on the balcony with safety pins holding together the back of his cassock.
This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 3:35pmThe Catholic Church is an entity comprised of the faithful; those willing to participate in the celebration of the Church along with its majesty and trappings, with practices in place for centuries, if not millenia. The office of the President is another matter entirely; the money is spent at whim, collected by people with guns: the IRS. I’ve never had a gun pointed at me in church as the collection basket came by. The Church has its failings, as does any group comprised of fallible human beings. This is true of nations as well.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 3:53pmWe hear this all the time “how much does it cost” fo this and that within The Vatican. The money could be used to help all those poor people throughout the world! Well you know what, Catholic organizations throughout the world already do so much that goes unrecognized. Here the US we care for millions of patients in Catholic hospitals regardless of the patient’s faith. Churches host food handounts, clothing handounts, and will even provide temporary shelter to all those who as. All this money comes from within the Dioceses in the form of tithes from parishoners like myself. As a Catholic I have no problem with how they spend my money. Why you ask? Because I have chosen my faith and if I didn’t agree with it I could simply choose another to follow.

Although we do not yet know who the Pope is, you have to admire the Cardinals for the fast rally and rapid decision – because we heard some speculate it would take several weeks! They are acting like a Corporate Board Room or a Joint Chiefs of Staff would when there is an urgent need, and time is of the essence.
It probably helps that their Saints and Holy Spirit and such are guiding their thought process, too.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 5:32pmThe new Pope is a Jesuit. The following is a small portion of the “Jesuit Oath”.
I furthermore promise and declare that I will, when opportunity present, make and wage relentless war, secretly or openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Liberals, as I am directed to do, to extirpate and exterminate them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare neither age, sex or condition; and that I will hang, waste, boil, flay, strangle and bury alive these infamous heretics, rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women and crush their infants’ heads against the walls, in order to annihilate forever their execrable race. That when the same cannot be done openly, I will secretly use the poisoned cup, the strangulating cord, the steel of the poniard or the leaden bullet, regardless of the honor, rank, dignity, or authority of the person or persons, whatever may be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agent of the Pope or Superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Faith, of the Society of Jesus.

I made the mistake of taking a tour of the Vatican when I went to Italy a few years ago and the sickening display of wealth and history of corruption of every single pope was just nauseating. They push thousands of people through there every day and charge a hefty price for the tour. You are not allowed to stop and look at anything, just push push push with the Vatican guards yelling at you if you don’t keep moving or if you take a picture of something that they don’t like. The Sistine chapel is a tiny little room with nice art on the ceiling. I hear they had to put electronics under a sub-floor that they laid down just for this event to keep the cardinals “honest” and not allowing them to send or receive text messages. Sad when you can’t trust someone who is supposedly a high muckety muck cardinal. The history of oppression and outright murder by these supposed holy men just makes me sick.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 3:52pmThe POPE will be the anti-christ’s right-hand man (KNOWN AS THE BEAST), but he won’t be the anti-christ. Do you actually read your Bible? (Book of Revelation) The anti-christ will be half-Jewish (SO AS TO APPEASE THE JEWISH ISRAEL) and half something else. He will hold dual-citizenship. Of course, if you are a true follower of Christ, you will never see the anti-christ because you will be raptured, that is, IF YOU ARE A BLOOD-BOUGHT FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST. Only you can answer that, but I will just bet, because of all the signs outlined in the Bible, that we are almost at midnight (11:59PM) and the rapture could happen any day now.
I AM READY. ARE YOU?

You will fit right in…….UNDERSTANDING the WORD of God is the beginning of wisdom…..This is a case of “a LITTLE knowledge is a dangerous thing”.
If you don’t believe the prophecy, then you may as well call yourself an agnostic. Oh, yeah, I’ve got a suitcase full of money for anyone who can find “Rapture” in the manuscripts.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 2:51pmUnfortunately, the papacy was caught with Mussolini in charge at the time who aligned himself with the fascists in Germany. The soviets meanwhile were purging jews, disidents and had outlawed religious worship of any kind. As a result…the papacy saw communism at the time as a greater threat to the church than the fascists. To be honest in hindsight..the papacy was right as the left continues it’s campaign of hatred on christianity today.

Additionally…Jennings started GLSEN..a homosexual advocacy group specifically tailored to spread the message to school age children. GLSEN recently said they want extreme sex acts like f#sting taught to school age children. Jenning of course distanced himself from his own group…natch.
Additionally…Jennings is on record as being an admirer of Harry Hay. Hay was a very enthusiastic proponent of NAMBLA.

Mar. 13, 2013 at 3:29pmOdd. If your are referring to Peter of Christ’s original Twelve Apostles, he was known as the lead Apostle (special witness of Christ). The terms pope and cardinal are no where in the Bible. Paul talks about Prophets, Apostle and divine revelation, not popes, cardinals and 2/3rds majority rule. Paul talks about a falling away, not an evolution of Christ’s Church.
And Peter was not a Bishop (leader of a local congregation). He was an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ and Leader of Christ’s Church through divine revelation from Christ (the true rock which Christ’s Church was built upon).

Mar. 13, 2013 at 3:54pmGonzo: That is part of what I was thinking when I asked the question. When ever I hear the words “peace” or “harmony,” my first thought is, on whose terms? As is demonstrated here everyday, there cannot be harmony between opposing ideas. We can be in harmony with others on some points but in disharmony on other points. Between me, a believer, and those who deny Christ there can be very little harmony. The Bible teaches us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. It would be like harnessing an ox with a Rotweiler; it’s just not going to work. I can be at peace with unbelievers in that I can forgive them, pray for them, help them when it is appropriate, but never be in harmony with them until they embrace Christ. Likewise there are so many important differences between Protestants and Catholics that there is little upon which to fellowship. In order to be in harmony something has to give. I have decided to try to avoid unprofitable debating of side issues in favor of elevating the name of Christ as He is revealed in the Bible. If there is any basis for harmony and peace, it will be based on the true Christ and His love for us and our love for Him.
