Another Day, Another Claim By Scientists That They’ve Found the ‘God Particle’ (Again)

Scientists Believe Data Strongly Indicates Higgs Boson

This 2011 image provide by CERN, shows a real CMS proton-proton collision in which four high energy electrons (green lines and red towers) are observed in a 2011 event. The event shows characteristics expected from the decay of a Higgs boson but is also consistent with background Standard Model physics processes. Physicists in Italy said Wednesday, March 6, 2013 they are closer to concluding that what they found last year was the elusive “God particle.” The long theorized subatomic particle would explain why matter has mass and has been called a missing cornerstone of physics. (Photo: AP/CERN)

GENEVA (TheBlaze/AP) — If anything shows how careful scientists are with their words and confirming something to be as true as possible, it’s the hunt for the infamous Higgs boson, often referred to as the “God Particle.” Over the last few years in particular, scientists have been using words like “hint” and “preliminary,”Β among others, to describe what they think could be their finding of such a subatomic particle.

Now, the search is all but over for the Higgs boson, a particle that is thought be a crucial building block of the universe. Even still though, they’re using phrases like “strongly indicates” to describe their data suggesting the Higgs boson being found, because nothing is ever truly “proven” in science. As Satoshi KanazawaΒ explained the idea in a post for Psychology Today, “theΒ currently accepted theory of a phenomenon is simply the best explanation for itΒ among all available alternatives.” (Or see an even more recent post from Kanazawa explaining the idea of “scientific proof”Β here.)

Physicists announced Thursday they believe they have discovered the subatomic particle predicted nearly a half-century ago, which will go a long way toward explaining what gives electrons and all matter in the universe size and shape.

The elusive Higgs boson was predicted in 1964 to help fill in our understanding of the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang. The particle was named for Peter Higgs, one of the physicists who proposed its existence, but it later became popularly known as the “God particle.”

The discovery would be a strong contender for the Nobel Prize. Last July, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, announced finding a particle they described as Higgs-like, but they stopped short of saying conclusively that it was the same particle or was some version of it.

Scientists have now finished going through the entire set of data.

“The preliminary results with the full 2012 data set are magnificent and to me it is clear that we are dealing with a Higgs boson, though we still have a long way to go to know what kind of Higgs boson it is,” said Joe Incandela, a physicist who heads one of the two main teams at CERN, each involving several thousand scientists.

Whether or not it is a Higgs boson is demonstrated by how it interacts with other particles and its quantum properties, CERN said in the statement. After checking, scientists said the data “strongly indicates that it is a Higgs boson.”

The results were announced in a statement by the Geneva-based CERN and released at a physics conference in the Italian Alps.

The atmosphere regarding this latest announcement, at least by taking a gauge from the conversation on Twitter, is in general excitement. But there are some who express fatigue at all the announcements regarding the particle and others are sarcastically pointing out what seems to be convenient timing of the announcement with the Roman Catholic Church recieving its new popeΒ –Β Pope Francis –Wednesday. Still others are also noting how it is interesting that CERN would be able to find such a particle but seems to be having trouble keeping its website up, since they were experiencing technical difficulties Thursday:

CERN’s atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider that lies beneath the Swiss-French border, has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate how the universe came to be the way it is.

The particle’s existence helps confirm the theory that objects gain their size and shape when particles interact in an energy field with a key particle, the Higgs boson. The more they attract, so the theory goes, the bigger their mass will be.

Unfortunately, today’s Scientist as well as our Anti-God Government will NEVER give any credit of creation to God. The government won’t even fund it if they even go that route. Man doesn’t like to give God credit because that means they cannot be GOD themselves which is really what they want and have always wanted. “Ye shall know them by their spiritual fruit.”

“Found” or not …….the search and discovery is key –to man’s life.

Nothing is really invented; it already exists.
    ….waiting to be discovered.

Creationists can relax. This has nothing to do with God or Creationism

Physicists actually hate the name β€œGod Particle” since it’s too sensationalistic.

The name comes from a 1993 book The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? By Leon M. Lederman. He actually chose the name because the publisher wouldn’t allow him to call it the Godd**m particle because it is so fundamental to the study of particle physics yet so elusive.

Oh goodie, a Canadian socialist has come to enlighten us all. Thank you so much, your brilliant observation is very much welcomed. Yeah, because we all want America to be just like Canada, where you can be thrown in jail for speaking your mind. Is the reason you Kanuks visit American discussion forums because you’re afraid you’ll be thrown in jail for hate crimes if you speak out in your own messed up country, or can you obnoxious people just not help but stick your noses in other people’s business?

It is being used by some atheists to “pull the chain” on sincerely religious perple. Atheists now have their own evangelical orthodoxy to match that of any religion. Kind of funny to me.

@jrook – the search is you jrook – you yourself are the proof that God exists. How is it everything man has “created” such as a keyboard or computer has a use yet we organic beings have no use? That we have no purpose as everything else in the universe has a purpose (manily for humans)? Science has been trying to figue this out since we could see into a lense. You are the proof and the world we live is the proof that WE, MANKIND, was Created for a purpose as well. You wake up everyday with the chance to know Who made you -everyday and every moment just like this one.

Scientists will one day find God when they discover a bridge between Heaven and humanity. We know that such a bridge exists from the many legitimate Near Death Experiences. When that bridge is discovered where humans can pilgrimage to Heaven or perhaps only the womb of Heave and return having experienced the Creator and the profound sense of unity with all souls here and in Heaven, then humanity will transform. Direct experience of the Creator not faith with help future humanity carry on an ever advancing civilization on this planet, knowing that love and wonder that awaits them in the next life.

This is typical media interference. Science plods along publishing incremental finding article after incremental finding article. this is not the fault of the science; it is the fault of the ever hyping media.

Remember the Saccharin scare back in the late ’70′s? PANIC! CANCER! CANCER!

Then it came out the ‘reporter’ only read the excerpt and not the article. Yes it causes cancer; but only if you drank thousands of cans for decades.

The ‘god particle’ was a tongue in cheek comment that a ‘reporter’ ran with.

Wow, these scientists are only 100 years behind what people like Napoleon Hill and Wallace Wattles pointed out in the early 1900′s. Hill called it “Ether” and Wattles called it “formless substance.” It is cool though that science continues to prove the existence of God while at the same time trying so desperately to not prove His existence. They can’t help themselves. It’s also interesting how much faith people put into “scientists” when every five years there are thousands of updates and corrections that have to be made in science textbooks based on newly discovered information. The Bible has zero corrections. How bout them apples

I highly recommend the following films/docs that are the death nail to evolution

      http://youtu.be/jZn5qo6Q6IY The Mysterious Islands

      http://youtu.be/AUpHyZjm3rU A Question of Origins

Mysterious Islands follows a team that retraces the exact steps Darwin took to the Galapagos.Islands and views it through a 21st century lens to point out all of his errors. The Case for a Creator is Lee Strobel who was an atheist who set out to β€œdisprove” The Bible but ended up converting to Christianity. Question of Origins goes step by step disproving the theory of Evolution. I also suggest A Case for Faith, The Darwin Dilemma, Dinosaurs or Dragons, Startling Proofs, & The Privileged Planet.

In all fairness to the scientists, those “sixteen” other reports were articles about the same project. With regards to your “something from nothing”, examples of that are abundant in physics of this type, but not what the “god particle” represents. There is nothing about “something from nothing” that is inherently inconsistent with the known laws.

The deeper science digs the more they prove that there is a Creator. Many of them believe in a Creator but are afraid to say so due to the retribution from the academic left that will follow. The more they uncover the more I believe.

For me I believe that god wants us to be curios. He wants us to question him. He gave us a brain that allows us to reason.
The problem comes in when we think that we now are god and that we think that we know everything and can explain everything around us.

@starman, the god of the universe gave us a brain to inquire. We know he has command of the universe. Let them search, it can only prove the existence of our creator. Remember when Hawkin declared god could not exist on a science channel special? Just after his conclusion (and loss of creditability) is when the particle faster than light showed up! Keep your faith and believe in your god, he has always delivered for those who trust him. As for the scientist,
