Are Concerns About a National Gun Registry Reasonable?
A bill to expand background checks for gun buyers is now on the way to the Senate floor where, despite original thinking on the issue, it is likely to be met with fierce opposition. The hang-up is the concern that these background checks could lead to a national gun registry making it fairly simple for the federal government to seize weapons from legal gun owners if need be. But proponents of the bill say the entire notion is absurd.
Critics of the law and possible registry can point to California, where California Justice Department agents can track down and disarm people with legally registered guns who have lost their ownership rights.  Bloomberg reports that almost 20,000 gun owners in the state are prohibited from possessing firearms, including convicted felons, those under a domestic violence restraining order or those deemed mentally unstable. California is the only state that tracks purchases and then uses that information to seize firearms from people who are no longer legally able to possess them. If the state determines that weapons need to be seized, all guns are taken from the home, whether they are registered to the person at fault or another co-habitant.
‘Real News’ Wednesday opened up discussing the bill in the Senate, and whether it is that unreasonable to track in order to seize gun from owners like those no longer deemed unfit in California.

They will ALL tell you that any form of government registration WILL lead to confiscation and when citizens cannot protect themselves the outcome will eventually be totalitarianism.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 9:22amI was reading a book by Judge Napolitano about Theodore and Wilson, 2 presidents that paved the way for centralized government power and the undermining of the constitution… I think we need to start a movement on the ground to restore voting rights to the states. The state governments used to have voting rights in congress, they were called senators but represented the state governments, while the house represented the public. When we started having the public elect the senators, that eliminated the bicameral legislature in all but name. We now have the house representing the public ( which elects them) and the other house representing the public which elects them. There is no voice for the state governments which would counter the centralization of power from the people and states to the federal government. How has that been working out in practice?
Time to seriously re-think the experiment. It wouldn’t be the first time that we passed a constitutional amendment to undo a previous change. Prohibition and it’s repeal is the obvious precedent. I think the Judge is right, and it would end up helping protect our rights…including gun rights. Some states are passing gun control legislation, but even they would have an interest in keeping what laws they do or don’t want under their own control rather than being imposed from DC.
Slogans like “give the United States their vote back” might be good. What do you think?

If the state determines that weapons need to be seized, all guns are taken from the home, whether they are registered to the person at fault or another co-habitant.
Who has these laws – NY and California? Yet those two states have 20% of the most dangerous cities (over 1,000 murders per year in just over their cities – over 10% of the country’s annual murders)
How’s that working for them?
Whatever happened to “derive their power from the consent of the people?”

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 9:04amI will never understand why you Americans will not look north to Canada when you want to know the value of a national gun registry. We are a similar demographic in a similar society. The comparison is almost exact.
Here is what we found out;
- The gun registry was a huge waste of billions of tax payers dollars.
- It had no measureable impact on crime rates.
- It did nothing to stop shootings.
- It didn’t remove any guns from the hands of bad guys.
- It made criminals of tens of thousands of Canadian gun owners who refused to register their guns.
- It allowed the police to, on the flimsiest of charges, kick in your door and as a measure to secure the ‘crime scene’ seize all of your guns.
A national gun registry in the United States would be a huge mistake. It would make criminals out of millions who refused to comply, leave guns in the hands of bad guys and empower the police and other law enforcement officers to enter your homes under the pretext of an unrelated ‘charge’ and seize your guns.
Canadians eventually got around to electing a Conservative government that did the right thing and scrapped the registry. It took over ten years to do. How long are you willing to wait?

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 8:33amNo politician or Washington Insider could pick a worse battle at a more critical time than to propose anti-American human rights as guaranteed under the Bill of Rights. People sense, and rightly so, that we are facing an impending collapse. In a real crisis the first bulwark of society to fall is police protection. I’ve lived through hurricanes and witnessed first hand that the people are left on their own and must do the best they can to survive. Now the Libs want to disarm the American people just when the Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein) is knocking at their door? Wrong answer Libs.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 8:52amDon’t you see? That’s exactly WHY they’re rushing through so much ‘gun control’ right now.. That’s why Biden wants us to only have a shotgun. That’s why they’re stockpiling weapons of war at a mad pace. Because they KNOW a collapse is near & it’s totally by design. Marxists & tyrannical usurpers thrive on chaos.(Kinda like when they let out the dangerous criminals.. They want that chaos). They’ve been actively working on the collapse of our currency & they don’t want to be outgunned when the SHTF.
And to answer the ridiculous question asked in the title; Historically speaking registration ALWAYS leads to confiscation & WE will NOT COMPLY with any tracking of our firearms. Nooooo way!!!

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 8:21amA national “Universal Background Check” is simply a Fed conduit for future confiscations under Obama’s emergency powers via Executive Fiat. That’s the downside. The upside is that the proposed law can be easily skirted. There are more than 186 million guns in private hands and they will be grandfathered in, not subject to the draconian regulation. If a private sale is thereafter backdated before the law takes effect, then the sale will dodge the onus of the legislation. Furthermore, this “assault” on freedom can be later over turned but it is far better to first intercept this ambush on American human rights than fight the later battle.

The time to use them is precisely the time that they try to take them away. What use are firearms in the future that you have to hide in a closet and take out only at midnight to look at, being now unable to even take them out for basic target practice?

The first group let one of his friends keep a .22 pistol, in the next sweep they took it. He said they knew if there was a weapon in the house by some type of scanner and while scanning cells phones would not work. I’m not sure what type of scanner that would be, but hiding them is out. Best to hand it over to them, barrel first

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 8:05amWhy do you think they want everyone to carry a “smart card” national ID with all medical information encoded on it? So you get better care if you become incapacitated away from home? Buried in that information will be whether you possess firearms (if you told your doctor that you do, in response to questions now required to be asked), and whether you have ever visited a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other type of mental health counselor. It’s then a simple matter to carry the California confiscation scheme to a national level.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 9:56amYou’ve touched on the biggest problem facing the 2nd Amendment…the US Supreme Court. One of the biggest consequences of Obama’s re-election is that he will likely replace one or two conservative justices (Scalia and Kennedy).
And if they do outlast Obama’s second term, they’ll be replaced by the next president. It’s hard to imagine that won’t be Hillary Clinton (her polling is strong, even among GOP women).
We already saw that SCOTUS is on the edge of the cliff in Heller. Losing Scalia or Kennedy, let alone both, will be a big challenge to 2A as we know it.
Elections have consequences.

also note, the license they refer to requires a background check and is issued at the pleasure of the local police chief, some are reasonable but others reject just about everyone. licenses are checked for ammo purchases and you can’t even buy pepper spray without one (though at least the local police have no discretion about issuing the limited license for just chemical sprays). and right now even though the law says they have to be issued in 40 days it is taking up to 6 months and in some cases longer to get licenses and renewals processed.
