Even If You Don’t Like Soccer, It’s Worth Watching This Amazing 70-Yard Game-Winning Goal

As the clock ticked down in a scoreless match against Mamelodi Sundowns in the African Premiere League on Sunday, SuperSport United defender Mor Diouf made an incredible 70-yard goal that ultimately decided the match.

Diouf dribbled towards the middle of the field but quickly noticed that the opposing goalkeeper out of position. So he absolutely drilled the ball 70-yards down the field, which made it past the team’s last line of defense and hit the back of the net.

The final score was 1-0, SuperSport United.

“Look, I’m sorry you were cut from your t-ball team. That can be tough on any kid. Baseball is one of the most difficult sports on the planet. Hitters who fail 7 out of 10 times (.300 average) are considered great players. Also in baseball, “RUNS are precious and need hard work and good planning”. Also, a baseball game can’t end in a 0-0 tie. Baseball and football are great sports because they require strategy and designed plays/pitches, soccer requires men to chase a ball around a field all day. Any sport where the ball changes hands every five seconds is redundant and boring.”
Soccer requires strategy on the go. You don’t get call time-out and have your coach tell you what play to run. Maybe you like being told what to do or how to run your life. Every player on the field is thinking of the next play in their heads before receiving the ball. I don’t expect you to understand or care, but as one who played all sports growing up and ultimately playing soccer in college I am a little biased, just like you. By the way, I was better at baseball and chose soccer!

These goals are very rare indeed. I too once saw a team score on a punt in 40 mph winds. Off my Stoppers head and over my goalie! Like a post before, this is a thinking man’s sport. This guy took 1 touch, while at the same time looking up to see where to attack next, via the dribble, the pass and he happened to see the keeper out and hit blistering instep that caught everyone by surprise! Well done! Do feel sorry for the keep though!

For all of you who believe soccer is nothing more than kicking a ball, understand this. When you understand that kicking is only 10% of the game then you are beginning to understand soccer,

Having played soccer in high school and college, the dichotomy is obvious. It is a sport which is simply far more fun to play than watch; although the goal in the clip was exciting.

Not the first, and won’t be the last.

College teammate of mine scored on a goal kick. Like this one, goalie was pulled up to far and he (“Doc”) sailed it over the goalie’s head into the net.

Soccer would be more fun to watch if there was no goalie and all points had to be scored from 70 yards away.

      @Uranium

      Nope – still an idiot…

Futbol has been played for almost 1500 years in various forms. Mongols, Huns, and Mayans/Native Americans would tie up the head of a fallen enemy into the stomach of a goat or sheep and kick it around in a celebration of their battle victory, often dividing up into teams and tackling each other to get the “ball.” It was a FULL contact and bloody event between members of the same tribe but also a celebration. Sort of like Greek wrestling at the original Olympic games, wrestlers often left with broken bones and crippling injuries or death.

Futbol – US soccer – has evolved into the present form simply because “civilized” people see it as a sport and not a battle field simulation and celebration. There is a reason that Futbol is called the “thinking man’s game.” Strategy is more valued than points. Skill is more important than the ability to throw a ball far or run fast. There is still a distinctive CORE gutteral warrior attitude of attacking another warrior in hand to hand (or foot to foot) combat.

Now take American football, if you touch the wrong guy at the wrong time, Penalty! Stop play. Take a rest. TV time out. Even if you put a hand or shoulder on the right guy at the wrogn time, Penalty! What a bunch of P@$$ies!!
Yeah but we hit each other says the thuggish beer bellied armchair quarterback. Yeah, with 30lbs of padding and only when allowed and in allowed places.

soccer and American football should trade names.

american football craps all over the kickers, and they are the only ones touching their foot to the ball.
without the kickers, “football” would be a useless name.

I’ve never quite understood my fellow Americans’ poo-pooing of soccer. I think it’s a tremendous sport.

People say soccer is boring, nothing happens. Really? While I am a lover of just about every sport out there, I wish I had a nickel for every slowly played and boring baseball game I watched that ended up 1-0. And talk about waiting until the end for something to happen…NASCAR, anyone? Does hockey never end 1-0? Have you ever froze your **** off at a football game to see your team lose 6-3? I have.

And this idea that soccer players only use their feet is ridiculous. Anybody who says that is ignorant on the sport (meaning uninformed, not stupid). Soccer takes a heck of a lot of body control and there is a LOT more contact (hands) than most people think; some soccer matches are just about full contact. And some of the best goals in soccer history were off the noggin, not the foot.

Regardless of what folks think about soccer, I think it’s a shame more Americans don’t support our two national teams (we have a women’s national team and a men’s national team). Both are very competitive, but the women’s team is spectacular; they have as much heart, grit and determination as any athletes in the world. I watch every national match I can, and I even go to them when they’re around. I find it greatly patriotic to support my flag in that manner.

      Isn’t a 1-0 game better than a 0-0 tie in soccer?? That’s your argument?

      MLB avg. runs/game = 4.28
      NHL avg. goals/game = 6.00

Find me a soccer league that has that type of scoring.

—”some soccer matches are just about full contact.”

      GOODSTUFF,

I didn’t realize I was making an argument. I was just relating casual facts. Still, what I wrote is absolutely true–any sporting event can be low scoring. And–this part is just my opinion–I don’t necessarily correlate the amount of scores with the amount of drama.

Some of the most dramatic soccer matches I’ve ever seen ended up 0-0. Further, not all matches can end in ties. Depending on the format/league/tournament/etc., overtime will be played and/or penalty kicks are taken. Even further is the fact that, most often, ties in soccer still give each team 1 point in the standings (running total for the season). Soccer most often uses a point total for the season (kind of like NASCAR).

As to the accusations on acting, are you actually going to argue that faking is a part of every sport? That’s just goofy to suggest. I’ve been watching sports for over 40 years, I know better. Do you know that a player can get a red card (thrown out of the game, leaving their team short a man) if they’re caught faking near the goal? What happened to those two Giants (NFL) players last season who fell down simultaneously because the coach wanted a timeout? Nothing. The case can be made soccer is much stricter than other sports.

As to the physical nature of the sport, it’s obvious you haven’t been around–or played–soccer before. Competitive soccer is downright brutal. Anyone who thinks soccer isn’t physical hasn’t a clue.

      GO USA! GOOOOAAAAALLL

Personally I find soccer much more exciting than other sports. Pretty much the whole game there’s a possibility of a goal and every couple minutes there’s a shot at the net, or at the very least some hectic times grappling for the ball. I don’t watch sports often but when I do it’s soccer.
