Hot Mic! Who Was Caught Mocking Ted Cruz During His Senate Constitution Remarks?
Republican Senator Ted Cruz must have ruffled a few feathers Thursday morning when he questioned Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s “assault weapons” ban, because during his closing remarks before the Senate Judiciary Committee, someone could be heard on a hot mic mocking his speech — on two occasions.
“My fourth and final point is that the Constitution, in my opinion, should be the touchstone of everything we do,” said Sen. Cruz. “I would point out that every one of us takes an oath to defend the constitution.”
“Thank you for the lecture,” someone can be heard muttering under their breath [at about the 20 second mark]:
Later, while driving home his point, Sen. Cruz said this:
In my view, the Constitution is particularly important when the Bill of Rights is unpopular. That was the entire purpose of the Bill of Rights! When our rights are popular, we don’t need the Constitution.
“I’m tired of these condescending…” seemingly the same person can heard saying, trailing off [at about the 22 second mark]:
As of this writing, it’s unclear who was criticizing Cruz.
However, the voice does sound male and it appears likely it was a senator. Additionally, given a) Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy’s impatience with Sen. Cruz’ speech (the Democrat senator cuts off Cruz toward the end to remind him that he hasn’t been in the Senate for very long) and b) the fact that it’s not uncommon for the chairman’s microphone to be left on, it’s not unlikely Leahy could be the culprit.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly quoted Sen. Cruz as having said, “When our rights are unpopular…” The senator actually said “popular.” This post has been updated to reflect that.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:53pmAmerican, we must sand with these brave new men, who are not afraid to speak their minds and tell us the truth.. the old guard hates it. I stand with Rand Paul and those like him.. Rubio caved.. and has been caving for awhile, just by his voting. He stands with Rand and then votes for Hagel?? Sorry, Rubio.. you can’t have it both ways! You have been scratched off my list. I would like to see and hear more from Mike Lee, Jason Chaffetz.. Orrin Hatch is a traitor.. and anyone else, who will stand by the constitution and the oath they took. Is it treason to take that oath and then do the opposite?? If not, it needs to be! God help the good men and women in Washington.. which I can count on one hand!

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:52pmIt’s not that Sen. Cruz hasn’t been there long enough, the fact is Leahy has been there way to long. The Senate and the House both need term limits.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:40pmMr “Leaky”, It seems to me that you should be reminded that perhaps you have been there TOO long! A primer on the Constitution that you have sworn to uphold is a good thing from time to time. Especially when you are trying to take rights away from law abiding citizens in order to punish law breakers who don’t respect the laws in the first place.

I agree, but its spelled stupidity… Do us a favor and change your name to “No Mind”…
If you agree with socialists like Leahy, and his companion in crime the admitted Vermont socialist Bernie Sanders that could only get elected by lying and saying he is an independent then you deserve what you get.
Why don’t you go and read in the charters of freedom where it CLEARLY states that it is the RIGHT and DUTY of all AMERICAN CITIZENS to rise up and overthrow an overbearing government that seeks to fundamentally change the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. You must have missed the classes in school that taught that the people are the MASTERS and the government is the SERVANT of the PEOPLE. (That is basic law for you).
Don’t worry about the “GOP” I have a feeling it is going to go through its “second childhood” real soon here, and revert back to what it was meant to be, if not it will go the way of the Dodo bird. Patriotic Americans are fed up with little fools like you who have no idea of what you are doing. Just by the sound of you I bet you drool all over that little Tory Piers Morgan, perhaps you should hop a boat back to England with him?

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:36pmTed Cruz may not be a long-time member of the Senate, but TEXAS sure as hell has been and anyone insulting Cruz because of his lack of tenure is really smacking Texans in the face saying, “sit down and shut up, you FNG”!
Perhaps some Texans need to get together and head to Washington to demonstrate to Ms. Feinstein what tenure really looks like…by the way, if anyone from Texas goes please stop by Illinois and pick me up, I can’t do squat there accept serve as a forward operating position when Chicago decides to go it alone…I’ll need the help keeping them contained. ;-)

A Republican pal says Feinstein didn’t hit Ted Cruz where she should have …
Unfortunately, in the heat of the battle, Dianne Feinstein didn’t make the key rebuttal to Cruz’s lame questions.
NONE of the Bill of Rights’ protections are absolute. NONE of the Bill of Rights’ protections are UNLIMITED. The First Amendment to free speech has all sorts of limits (slander, libel, “fire in a crowded theater”), yet Cruz claims that they are. The Fourth Amendment protection against search and seizure isn’t absolute either. He’s a simpleton. Unfortunately, DiFi got swept up in the emotion of the moment and failed to make this simple, true, and devastating response to Cruz.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:35pmWhy is congress even waiting time on this? Even if assault weapons were banned tomorrow there would still be millions of them legally everywhere. Even if you could make all guns magically disappear you couldn’t make some twisted individuals desire to hurt people go away, and there is more than one way to die. Ways much more efficient than a gun. Picture this… Your standing in Grand Central Station, you look up to check your train and see something else… What would you rather see A) A fire ball and shrapnel from a bomb? B) A train bouncing down the platform? C) People just falling to the ground convulsing with blood oozing from all of everyone’s orifices? Or D) Some spaz with a gun? Our so called leaders are offering US a false illusion of safety in exchange for our very real rights. This isn’t about safety and security; its about power and control. I see the folly and the trickery, deceit, and subversion coming from Washington. I will not peacefully ground arms to a tyrannical government. I don’t need Feinstein’s, Obama’s, or any politicians permission to exercise rights that don’t come from them…

As soon as the US is declared a war zone and we start wiping out those that have invaded I will agree with you. Until then we all have the rights of a citizen even when I don’t like it. People caught on a battle field are treated differently that is the law no one person ever gets to decide, when that happens that individual needs to be eliminated.

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:13pmTed Cruz asked very reasonable questions, and he set them up, not so much for Ms. Feinstein, but for the folks at home watching him (both at the present and in the future).
Ms. Feinstein’s response, that ‘we pass laws and the Supreme Court rules on their legality, their Constitutionality’ is simply staggering – it would seem she feels she has no reason to ponder the Constitutionality of any laws she votes on, since that’s the responsibility of the Supreme Court.
The Second Amendment is very clear:
“…the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Is Ms. Feinstein proposing that by limiting what citizens can buy she is not impinging their rights?
Can the Government limit when, how, and who may get an abortion, or is that ‘impinging their rights”?

Posted on March 14, 2013 at 4:00pmSenator Durbin’s comments about the Bill of Rights not being absolute is telling. I realize that the Supreme Court and Congress have been trying to shred the Bill of Rights and the Constitution since Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, but the founders intenended the Bill of Rights to be a mandate for the freedom of “We the People.”
