WASHINGTON (AP/TheBlaze) — The bartender working the private fundraiser where Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made his comments about “47 percent” of Americans says he didn’t make the secret recording as a political partisan.
In his first public interview, Scott Prouty tells MSNBC’s Ed Schultz that he lost sleep and struggled for weeks before deciding to release the recording to the magazine Mother Jones. But Prouty says he thought it was important that people heard Romney and knew what he was really thinking.
In the video, Romney tells donors paying $50,000 apiece that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government, see themselves as victims and believe the government has a responsibility to care for them.
Romney’s critics used the video to argue that he was out of touch with average Americans.
Prouty steadfastly maintains that his motives in recording the video were apolitical. However, his Twitter feeds — AnneOnymous670 prior to the Ed Show taping, and ScottProuty now — tell a different story. To begin with, the anonymous Twitter feed trades explicitly on Prouty’s identity as the person who leaked the tape, to the point of featuring this image as its background:
Prouty’s Tweets, meanwhile, evince a highly pro-union, anti-Republican viewpoint and, in some cases, anti-NRA viewpoint, even after the election. A quick sample follows:
Why We Need Labor Unions After All finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ti… Healthy Capitalism Is Not Just About Maximizing Near-Term Profits.

What is more, Prouty relentlessly publicized the video himself under the Youtube handle “Romney Exposed,” and also as Daily Kos blogger AnneOnymous670.
Prouty also reached out to Democratic opposition researcher James Carter about it, rather than sending it to reporters. The Huffington Post reports on this process:
But Prouty didn’t wait for a reporter to find him.
He found James Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, who had discovered a talent for opposition research and finding gotcha videos deep in the C-Span archives. Prouty had followed Carter’s work on YouTube. “He had good sense enough to follow me back when he saw my videos after I followed him,” Prouty said. “Then he had the good sense enough to contact me after that.”
Prouty said he wanted Carter to help him get in touch with Mother Jones’ David Corn. He had been a big admirer of Corn’s work — especially his investigative pieces on Romney and the Hong Kong-based Global-Tech Appliances, a firm that sought to profit from U.S. outsourcing. He saw Corn on television all the time, he said. Maybe the veteran journalist could get his little film on the air. “They were picked,” he said of Carter and Corn.
Now, Prouty regrets letting Corn take credit for the video, citing the reporter’s outsize bragging about “uncovering” it, which Prouty sees as overzealous self-promotion.
“I sent it to [Corn] in regular mail, taped to a small, like, a little note card in an envelope,” Prouty told the Huffington Post.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 10:34amThat’s not the point. The way he said it was stupid and made him look like a douche-bag. In fact, there is a trend among conservatives to belittle the lower class and ride them off. This is a mistake. As stupid as this action was, it’s not what cost him the election. Gary Johnson and the imbecils that supported him are. The idiots who stayed home because their libertarian hero lost and considered Obama and Romney to be “the same thing” cost Romney the election.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 11:22amthis was never an ideological battle of left vs right, GOP vs Dems, Socialism vs liberty. This is ethnic warfare against white people.
Why are hostile globalist elite defending Israel as a Jewish ethnostate with Jewish only immigration, but ravaging white majority Europe, North America into a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Gulag with dystopian non-White colonization?
Why do gullible Whites kowtow to hostile Jewish & crypto-Jewish elite, who butcher White soldiers in bankrupting wars, infiltrate & subvert our banks & spying agencies, indoctrinate us in classrooms & mass media, impose trillions in debt, & plunder our jobs & wages?
East Asia is 99% yellow. Africa is 99% Black. West Asia is 99% Brown. But 3rd world colonizers are annihilating Whites, just as Chinese colonizers are annihilating Tibet.
“Native” Americans are not native. They invaded from East Asia. Whites weren’t the only slave owners, imperialists. Muslims, Jews, China, India, Mayans, Africans all are guilty of slavery, imperialism. Whites were victims of Islamic, Jewish, African imperialism, slavery.
Gullible Whites should reject subversive Jewish ideologies like libertarianism, feminism, liberalism, socialism. They should reject hostile slanders of racism, collectivism.
Love to all humanity, but White people must unite & organize to advance their families, their fertility, their interests. Reading list:

To answer your question, no they have not proven Governor Romney’s “47%” comment was wrong. I’m not going to say that 100% of the 47% are what the Governor has described but I would venture to say that yes a majority of this particular population are too in it for themselves, too lazy to get that 2nd job and/or not willing enough or tough enough to live a more fiscally responsible lifestyle. These are the people who want their “Obama Phone” and want the minimum wage to be increased that would break the backs of small businesses. He’s a thought: about time instead of increasing minimum wage, decrease cost of living through property tax reform. @YourSensei…stuff a sock in it. If our so called leaders from The Left would stop trying to make everyone to feel good by giving them free stuff off the backs of hard working tax payers and start actually understand and teach how America was built and how it succeeds in a free market instead of a shackled market then those in the “47″ would be lead out of the darkness of socialistic style economics and into opportunity.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 12:35pmLandowner has it right…..
If you watched the unedited version of the tape, it wasn’t about putting down low income voters(as inarticulate and untactful as the statement was)….it was about addressing the issue in his campaign’s lack of performance. He’s speaking to a bunch of high dollar campaign donors who want to be assured that their investment isn’t being wasted…hence Mitt addressing identified failures in his campaign, and how he planned to close that gap. It was really no different than a CEO addressing a board or a group of potential investors in a business envirnoment.
His point was that his campaign focused on the message that his policies would cut taxes for all citizens, allowing them to keep more of their own money. This was a message that used to resonate with many more Americans. What he failed to realize was that about 47% of Americans today will not pay out a NET loss in Income Taxes because of all the deductions, incentives, and social programs that either totally reimburse what they paid to the gov throughout the year….or even get more money back. Hence…..the message of you keeping more of your money did not register.
What’s inaccurate about that message? (Other than being poorly stated…but appropriate for the audience)

Mar. 14, 2013 at 1:33pm@Soul Leister, the answer is to restrict voting. First, no one who is receiving socialistic benefits from the government should be allowed to vote. Mar. 14, 2013 at 1:54pm47% is probably on the low side. When you take into account programs that people have paid into like S.S. and Medicare, there are at least that many dependent on government to live. People rightfully believe that they have paid for those services even though as in Medicare, they are probably going to take out more than they put in.

Explain to them that even though they worked all their lives paying for these these services, they are actually not entitled to them for they actually belong to the rich. I don’t think restricting voting rights based on paid income taxes is the right approach. Just imagine a more punitive & destructive government in place that drives unemployment through the roof and increases the threshold at which one qualifies for federal assistance.
It would devour more of the middle class and thereby limit voting to only the upper class (which at that point would might be folks in collusion with said government)
The solution is addressing the education system (sort of where the progressives started). Make Economics & Free Enterprise as important as the the academic holy trinity (reading, writing, arithmetic). Stop sending coaches as the instructors of these classes, and teach kids how the free market works (and how to make it work for you) at an early age. The only way this happens is if you cut the educational power structure off at the head and decentralize the process on a state level. Let the states compete, and watch them adopt best practices else they face brain drain and lower tax revenue.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 3:23pmOf course, anyone who can think can prove Romneys’ statements wrong. The 47% who don’t pay federal income tax (he just said taxes, but of course there aren’t that many people who don’t pay any taxes) and the 47% who always vote Democrat can’t be identical groups because the about a quarter of the 47% who don’t pay federal income tax are the elderly who tend to be more conservative and more likely to vote Republican than the general population. Therefore, there must be some people who are working taxpayers and always vote Democrat. In fact, there are lots of them.

Yes, in fact Romney was incorrect. Romney was referring to common knowledge that 47% of americans end up paying no income tax. Romney was equating them to Obama voters. But that is not true. In fact, among the poorest americans, Romney got 35% of their vote and would have gotten more of them if he didnt piss them off

The reason Romney lost was because 47% of Americans identify with Democrats and only 42% identify with Republicans. Moderates are accounted for as well as Independents in this Gallup poll for 2013.
The only way to land a winner is if the economy tanks, and a major scandal breaks, which will push moderate Democrats and independents to a Libertarian Republican in 2016 who appeals to Democrats and Republicans.
You support a Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio and Hillary will have a landslide victory in 2016.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 10:30amDon’t blame this guy for what he did. Blame Romney for the stupid way in which he communicated his point. That was stupid but even with that, it’s not what cost him the election. What cost him the election are idiot conservatives that voted (or not) their simplistic “principles” rather than looking at the big picture. Those are the idiots we need to blame.

Romney lost because of the Lefty smear machine which planted seeds if doubt among many of the quasi-Americans who do not exercise their God given right to vote; they stayed home.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 10:14amI never understood why Romney did not proudly stand by his statement. The 47% have a vested interest in increasing taxes and spending. We should eliminate the income tax and replace it with a consumption tax on everything sold. Seeing the tax on every purchase receipt, and the tax rate constantly increasing, would be a wake-up call. The only way to halt the incessant demand for government money is to have everyone feel the pain of the spending.

“life-long workers on Social Security”
I have seen stories of life long workers in the socialist paradise of Sweden being turned out of their homes in order to save costs or to get additional money from the federal government for the local government.
Life long workers of/on Social Security means that you were scr/wed. People have been turned out of their homes top makes room for refugees. There are always an endless stream of those. The federal government pays more for housing them. To cut costs move 80, 90 or 103 year old people from their care homes to other homes. a 50% death rate is acceptable. It saves even more money. More care is taken in transporting a dolphin than than elderly. Who cares how much they payed into the system.
The social Security system should be dismantled over time & replaced. The government as middle man is scheisse.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 11:41amWhat I read here a lot is that what Romney said was true, which is only half true. So let’s ask, who exactly are “the 47%?”
Are they the people who pay no Federal income taxes? A majority of these actually do work, take responsibility for their lives, and in no way see themselves as victims. They simply make so little that they qualify for the earned income tax credit. Now,I’d be all in favor of doing away with the EITC, if only to deprive the ravening right-wing pack of its excuse for endless whining about those who “pay no taxes.” But most of its beneficiaries are not in fact lazy loafers. Some of them probably even vote Republican.
Or by “the 47%” do you mean people who get all or some of their income in the form of Federal cash or subsidies like food stamps, “Obama phones” and all the other stuff you like to complain about? These of course do include Social Security Disability fakers and methhead moms with 9 children who still contrive to drive fancy cars and vacation in Aruba. But they also include veterans and recipients of regular Social Security and Medicare. These are not welfare. They truly are “entitlements” in the best sense, not Federal largesse but support one is “entitled” to as a result of having served or having paid into their funding.
Prouty gave us a window into the soul of Mitt Romney, who seems to think people only vote their material interests, and who expressed contempt for half the American people. Such a man did not deserve t
