Man Behind Romney’s Infamous ’47 Percent’ Video Finally Reveals Himself on MSNBC

WASHINGTON (AP/TheBlaze) — The bartender working the private fundraiser where Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made his comments about “47 percent” of Americans says he didn’t make the secret recording as a political partisan.

In his first public interview, Scott Prouty tells MSNBC’s Ed Schultz that he lost sleep and struggled for weeks before deciding to release the recording to the magazine Mother Jones. But Prouty says he thought it was important that people heard Romney and knew what he was really thinking.

In the video, Romney tells donors paying $50,000 apiece that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government, see themselves as victims and believe the government has a responsibility to care for them.

Romney’s critics used the video to argue that he was out of touch with average Americans.

Prouty steadfastly maintains that his motives in recording the video were apolitical. However, his Twitter feeds — AnneOnymous670 prior to the Ed Show taping, and ScottProuty now — tell a different story. To begin with, the anonymous Twitter feed trades explicitly on Prouty’s identity as the person who leaked the tape, to the point of featuring this image as its background:

Scott Prouty, Man Behind Mitt Romneys 47 Percent Video, Speaks Out on Ed Show

Prouty’s Tweets, meanwhile, evince a highly pro-union, anti-Republican viewpoint and, in some cases, anti-NRA viewpoint, even after the election. A quick sample follows:

What is more, Prouty relentlessly publicized the video himself under the Youtube handle “Romney Exposed,” and also as Daily Kos blogger AnneOnymous670.

Scott Prouty, Man Behind Mitt Romneys 47 Percent Video, Speaks Out on Ed Show

Prouty also reached out to Democratic opposition researcher James Carter about it, rather than sending it to reporters. The Huffington Post reports on this process:

But Prouty didn’t wait for a reporter to find him.

He found James Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, who had discovered a talent for opposition research and finding gotcha videos deep in the C-Span archives. Prouty had followed Carter’s work on YouTube. “He had good sense enough to follow me back when he saw my videos after I followed him,” Prouty said. “Then he had the good sense enough to contact me after that.”

Prouty said he wanted Carter to help him get in touch with Mother Jones’ David Corn. He had been a big admirer of Corn’s work — especially his investigative pieces on Romney and the Hong Kong-based Global-Tech Appliances, a firm that sought to profit from U.S. outsourcing. He saw Corn on television all the time, he said. Maybe the veteran journalist could get his little film on the air. “They were picked,” he said of Carter and Corn.

Now, Prouty regrets letting Corn take credit for the video, citing the reporter’s outsize bragging about “uncovering” it, which Prouty sees as overzealous self-promotion.

“I sent it to [Corn] in regular mail, taped to a small, like, a little note card in an envelope,” Prouty told the Huffington Post.

    Paul101,

    Spoken like a true racist.

    You disgust me.

I’m Jewish. In terms of politicial opinions, my beliefs would fall in line with conservatism.

The fact that you feel there’s some kind of underhandedness with Israel or our relationship with the ONLY democratic and free nation in the Middle East….just, yeah.

Tell me another Middle-eastern country where Jews AND gentiles can live in peace without fear of being murdered for their beliefs or just for their ethnicity.

Your ignorance is only outweighed by your arrogance. Clown.

Romney was right, America is divided between the Makers and the Takers (at least 47%). This guy should be prosecuted for intruding on Romney’s privacy. In fact, he helped give the election to Obama, and is a traitor to America, but I guess he can’t be prosecuted for treason.

Every state with voter ID went for Romney. In states without voter ID, there was as much as 110% for Obama??! The voting machines are owned by companies favorable to Democrats.
The fact the video camera was planted on a table almost behind a plant, facing the speaker, is ample proof he intended to get any sound bites that could be used to defeat Romney.

Obama won by dividing the country into the ” rich ” and the rest. Obama won on a negative ticket. He proved that anger and resentment now win elections. And the Obama radical Democrats have continued to divide and antagonize this country. Remember the Zimmerman deal ? He is an angry man just like his absent daddy and the angry, black , male Marxist mentors who influenced him. Obama is a child of the Black Power Movement of the 60s. The radical Democrats continue to stir up division over race, guns, and social class.

While the media spins one stupid poll after another for why Romney lost:

… 70% latinos voted democrat and
… 60% women voted democrat and
… 80% of college educated citizens
… 98% blacks voted democrat (that one is true all others bovine excrement)
    …etc etc

… but only lost by 4 million votes (despite all the media’s portrayal of Romney supporters as all white racists… and only 2% of the clearly defective black vote, their only non racists(?)… mindful less than half of all whites including Hispanic Caucasians are supposedly racist AND 98% OF ALL BLACKS CLEARLY ARE RACISTS, by the media’s own definition… which is good so long as they vote for democrats?)… remember 4 million fewer republicans cast ballots in 2012 than 2008.

The single reason Romney actually lost was the so called religious right stayed home… the protestants (Methodists, Baptists, etc) couldn’t “cotton” to vote for a Mormon because he isn’t one of them(?)… and its important to note all the democrats that didn’t vote for a Mormon either are cut from the same cloth (SECTist hypocrites)… if not that then those 4 million republicans from 2008 must have realized they were part of that “freeloader 47%’ers” group Romney alluded to and didn’t want their freeride to be curtailed…

    …sad but true.

Prouty was being smart. He didn’t “come out” before the election because that would have put the spotlight on him rather than on what Mitt Romney said, and what it showed about Romney’s contempt for half the people of the nation he aspired to lead. It’s possible that Mother Jones or the Democrats advised him to lay low. If so, it was good advice. Now you can slime Prouty all you want. It won’t matter. As for Romney, he slimed himself.

Yes, Romney *did* slime himself. That’s precisely my point. He shouldn’t have been the Republican nominee in the first place. He won because the media, when they had dirt on him, decided not to show it until later. There were plenty of republican nominees whose campaigns ended for similar comments. Romney’s should have too.

This kind of crap is why this country got so damn partisan in the first place, and why presidential elections look like an episode of ‘Dumb and Dumber’. The primaries aren’t competitive enough. That goes for the democrats too – I remember in 2008 there being 7 candidates on the stage other than Clinton or Obama who were never given serious consideration. Many of us don’t even bother to defend our guy anymore – we just point to the other one and act like two wrongs make a right.

Apolitical my ass….This guy isn’t only partisan, the media he sold this to is in the business of picking presidents for the American people.

This man recorded this video on May 17th, technically during the Republican primary even though he was declared the ‘presumptive nominee’. An apolitical organization interested in telling the American people the truth would have released it May 18th. It wasn’t released until September 17th. That behavior suggests it was tactically withheld to make Romney look good in the primary but to make him look bad in October.

If it was released May 18th, the Republican party would have taken a step back, the primary might have gone to convention, and the people might have nominated somebody else. I for one didn’t get an effective vote in the primary as Romney had already been declared the winner by the time my state rolled around. But, in reality, Romney was *not* a strong candidate and the powers that be were withholding information.

So why do Florida bartenders get to dictate who the Republican nominee is? Doesn’t my vote count too?

I think if Romney wanted to – they’d be a defamation suit here.

There where damages incurred based on the illegal (without his consent) videotaping of an American citizen.

Seriously – if it was me videotaping you without your consent (right, wrong or indifferent) and I shared it with a candid world (thru whatever medium) and part of the product of that act was that you incurred a loss, or jeopardized a relationship, lost a job or otherwise – would there be legitimate grounds for a legal suit for damages renderred?

Mitt Romney was right!! There should be NO question about that fact at this point.

If there is a doubt then let’s be clear… you are either inherently stupid (really) or dangerously naive. Serious statement!

Mitt Romney represents the proven standard of American democracy. Belief in a Constitution (what we stand for defined). The idea that a life of principle (the notion that we as individuals should live with a self-imposed set of standards) creates a society of principles – is a society in ascension. The “established” standard chosen for America from it’s inception was/is Christian. (Not contestable!)
This idea goes beyond the idea of an individual making good choices to a society and it’s leaders basing their choices on the “same set” of standards. Very important! No society can exist with multiple sets of competing standards. Fundamental.
The American ideal of self-reliance (the value or idea of “earning” the quality of your life based on your own efforts and merits – founded again in Christian thought).
Capitalism – the notion of developing a good or service and adds value to society at a cost that generates a yield that pays for one’s expenses and then develops a profit. That, in turn, allows you to generate an economic cycle that brings economic stability, not just to self, but to others in your community (common unity).
The idea that this set of values and beliefs was founded in America but is for the world.

Nothing Romney said in that video was not true. Some of those people are gaming the system and they won’t vote to stop the free ride. That 47 percent cannot be swayed from their opinions. Romney had to appeal to the other 53%. Of which, another 40%+ were Republicans. Really the only ones he had to go after were the 5-10% undecided. Next time we have to do better. The Dems don’t help the poor or the minorities. You must do better at getting your message out there to the people that need help. The people you are fighting for or they will not have a chance at a future with this administration.
