MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Claims Jesus Didn’t Preach ‘Fire and Brimstone’ — But Is This True?

Earlier this week, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews took to the airwaves to discuss faith and religion. The center of discussion was the host’s views on the Christian faith and Jesus’ teaching. In addition to unfavorable comments about Pope Benedict XVI, he also issued some curious proclamations about Jesus’ teachings.

In commenting about the pope emeritus, the liberal host said he’s never been a fan of Benedict, adding, ”I don’t think he matters.”

As for the Christian faith more generally, Matthews separated its teachings from those embraced by other religious systems, noting that compassion and care for the poor distinguish it.

“What separates Christianity from all the other religions? It’s compassion. It’s looking out for the little people,” he said. “Mary Magdalene is one of my favorite figures from the New testament. She’s a prostitute and Jesus loved her. He was a buddy of hers.”

There is debate, however, surrounding this characterization of Magdalene as a prostitute — one that was advanced during the Christianity’s early years. Also, some would contend that what separates the Christian faith from other religions is its inclusion of a savior — God’s son — who perished to save the sins of humanity.

But Matthews wasn’t done there.

“If you look at the Bible, who’s he curing and who’s he taking care of, Jesus — he’s going after the people who are blind and crippled and outcast for sexual misbehavior, if you will,” Matthews continues. “He’s looking out for those people. He’s not preaching fire and brimstone.”

As Townhall notes, though, Jesus didn’t just roam about healing the afflicted. While this was a major role as presented in the Bible, he also spoke about redemption and what was needed for one to reach heaven (elements some would consider “fire and brimstone”). Consider John 3:3, when he told Nicodemus, a religious leader, that one must be “born again” in order to be with the Lord after death.

Here’s how verses 3-5 read (as per Bible Gateway):

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]

“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d]

Of course, that’s only one example. While it’s true that the tactics Jesus used were not “fire and brimstone” in a more vicious sense, he surely preached about heaven and hell and what was expected of humanity.

As hard as secular people like Chris Matthews tries to imprint his revisionist biblical understandings. Jesus wasn’t here to “fire & brimstone” the human people’s. his role was conciliator to bridge Mankind and God’s place.
Jesus was also very specific of Man and sin. Yes he forgave many recorded people of blindness or illness of health. But he also didn’t revise biblical teachings of what man was in the expectations of God. He didn’t say, a man could participate with another man the same as a man was with his wife. He didn’t say a man could shack up and play act a marriage, just because they loved each other.
Chris Matthews has a lot of bunk coming out between his teeth. He clearly has no authority to comment about Christianity or revise the Bible to fit his agenda.

What Jesus said is recorded in the Holy Scriptures, in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and in Revelation.
We do not need Chris Matthews to tell us what he said, we can read it for ourselves.

To excuse the idiocy of Chris Matthews, and the damage he does, by calling him secular, is very kind of you. It is.
Chris Matthews is truly a monster abetting the destruction of the greatest nation of the world.

Why DOES he espouse his propaganda every night on MSNBC is the bigger question. WHY?!

It may be an extreme analogy but…,Hitler did not rise to power overnight. It took a long time for him to take office and destroy Germany. He had enablers.

Chris Mathews is an enabler of this ideologic, socialist, incompetent administration.

WHY?! Is it because he truly believes the BU*#SH%T…,or filthy MSNBC lucre?

and this is a warning to Bill O’Reilly too: Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, came to earth to save sinners and to DIE for our sins. He came to DIE. No one “killed Him”. His act of LOVE was the greatest there has ever been or would ever be. He endured the insults, the physical beatings, the betrayals, the worst that we silly human beings can toss out, and then the EVIL from that fallen Angel Satan who will be dealt with. O’Reilly is going to write a book about “who Killed Jesus” – dude. the answer is JESUS. He’ll make millions off of this book but he’d better have his theology straight and truthfully told. Pity him if he doesn’t.
As far as MATTHEWS…. YO! Pathetic one!!! You don’t have to yell to cut people to the quick, you are too stupid to know when you’ve been insulted, I realize that…but PITY the FOOL who tries to rewrite or in ANY way redo God’s Message to His Created (us) . As the old saying goes (was about HST) Jesus told us the truth and it sounds like HELL FIRE to these messed up people like Matthews.
Again: If you are reading this and you don’t know “who” to believe…just go somewhere quiet, turn off the TV or get away from the COMPUTER and just ask JESUS… “Please tell me who you are, I want to know You” there is not a finer thing you can do for your life than that. :)

He did preach fire and brimstone. He also said the law of the Old Testament was to be followed. Just because people don’t follow the most ridiculous parts of the Bible or focus on them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Nobody follows the Bible to a T, because it would be illegal and there are so many contradictory things it would be impossible.

Apparently I made an impression on you. Thankfully, I never think twice about you. You do remind me of some other fool on here who use to follow me around article to article asking nonsensical questions and making idiotic remarks towards me. It was never anything substantial mind you, just psychotic ramblings.

My questions would be to Chris Matthews, “who cares what Jesus is reported to have said?” Jesus was a man, all men are fallible and their words open to critique.

The Bible is book, just like every other book. It holds no added weight for me in a discussion. If I make a point that I think is valid, and some simple minded religious nut starts quoting scripture, I shrug it off as if they were reading from a children’s book….which is what I equate the Bible to. Fairy tales, imaginary friends, myth, it’s all mindless dribble to me.

Jesus lead by example. He helped the needy and tended to the sick, but he did not use government or redistribution of wealth to do it. Thou shall not steal or covet thy neighbor’s goods. That leaves YOU! You, the individual are the one taught by Jesus AND by the old Testament to follow God and be responsible for yourself.

      YOUR actions are YOURS.

      YOUR results are YOURS.

Help others by effort and money if possible. Do not be greedy. This is for you, the individual. Do not steal or covet from anyone, not if they are greedy, rich or poor, generous on their own, rich or poor …. DON’T. Just Don’t.

Crissy wants God to be a sissy like him and pretend to love but never judge. Crissy wants to believe there is no fire and brimstone because he will eventually be burning.

Chrissy Tingles- like all liberals- believes Jesus was in the classwarfare business (at least those liberals that don’t utterly despise Jesus and Christians).

Chrissy has never read the part of the new testament where Jesus says we have to seek out the non-believers because they are the ones that need saving, not the believer. He’s not “looking out for those people”…he’s trying to reach them so that they can come to God through him. For instance..the apostle Matthew was a tax collector..one of the “one percent”. Madgalene became a “buddy of his” because she STOPPED being an adultress. She saw Jesus as the son of God and in one of the most profound events in the bible..she was the first to see the resurrected Jesus. In Jewish culture of the time a woman’s testimony was not of any worth. This is one of the most compelling pieces of evidence that the new testament is not a fabrication but an outline of events to teach the word of Jesus. Why would a Jew of the time use a woman to give testimony if her testimony is worthless? Even the disciples didn’t believe her.

Chrissy also doesn’t understand that (as pointed out by GONZO and others here) Jesus said it’s not enough to forgive the sin, the sinner must repent and “sin no more” for any of this to have meaning and value.

      Chrissy just doesn’t understand.

The part that Chris seems to have forgotten is that Jesus would also say “Go and sin no more.”

He didn’t say “Yeah, I forgive you even if you don’t agree with Me that what you are doing should be a sin so you just keep on doing what you were doing I’ll forgive you”. Chris seems to have missed the lesson on Repentance as a pre-curser of Forgiveness.

Yahshua used the analogy of the garbage dump outside of Jerusalem to illustrate what will happen to people who refuse to obey Yahweh’s commands. They name of the location of the garbage dump was Gehenna (The valley of the son of Hinnom). They used sulfur (brimstone) to throw on the fires to make sure the garbage burned completely away to ashes.

@QPW….You are correct, Hell = (Hebrew) “Sheol” (Greek) “Hades” really only means the common grave of mankind.
“Gehenna” is also sometimes translated as hell in some bibles. This is the Valley of Hinnom (Gehenna) outside the walls of Jerusalem. For a time it was the site of idolatrous worship, including child sacrifice. In the first century Gehenna was used as an incinerator for the filth of Jerusalem. Bodies of dead animals and executed criminals were thrown into the valley to be consumed in the fires, to which sulfur, or brimstone, was added to assist the burning. The criminals who were considered undeserving of burial in a memorial tomb, were thrown into Gehenna.

Pretty much all of Matthew 5 (WORD OF GOD – not man) trumps EVERYTHING this article says as well as Chris M:
    For ex:
    Christ Fulfills the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

    Reg Chris Matthews in general:
    “2 Peter 2:1
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.”

Nowhere, in any translation of the Bible, is Mary Magdalene called a prostitute (or former prostitute). She is listed in Luke as a woman who had been possessed by seven demons; I’ve heard that in the Roman Catholic tradition these demons are said to represent the seven deadly sins, one of which is lust.

Many poor translations (or preachers) conflate Mary Magdalene with several other Marys, or with the woman taken in adultery (who is nameless), or the sinner (also nameless) who washes Christ’s feet with her ****. None of these is accurate.

Long story short, anyone who thinks Mary Magdalene was a prostitute has not read the Bible.

“It’s common knowledge…Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ mistress.”

And hundreds of years ago it was common knowledge that people’s temperaments and health were controlled by the four humours, and you needed to bleed them with leeches to improve their health.

Common knowledge is often not right. It helps to actually read the Bible and see for yourself.

Jesus condemned the cities of Bethsaida, Capernaum and Chorazin because of their unbelief. Jesus said that if Sodom & Gomorrah had seen Jesus miracles that even they would of repented. I was the town prostitute or don’t you read the Bible you moron? I had plenty of money, camels, servants, clothes, wine, jewels and whatever else I wanted.” NEVER call me “little” or “poor” again okay or I will so bitch slap you again!”

    Chris Matthews Show tomorrow:
“hello folks. I need a retraction from my show yesterday. i was wrong. Mary Magdalene was neither ‘little” or “poor.” in fact, she was a very rich woman who gained her riches from men. When she stopped doing those ‘favors” from men she even got some of them to follow Jesus as well. And they brought their money with them and gave it to his ministry. In fact, she was so prominent in the biblical story and such a big leader in the NT Church that Jesus told her of his resurrection first. So, “poor” and ‘little” will henceforth be used for: my reporting, my biblical exegesis, and my non existent theological pea brain.”

Chris Matthews was later seen drinking kool-aid laced with arsenic and beating his chest with a few “mea culpas” then he drove a “street woman” to the nearby clinic.

Unless one reads the Bible with intent, they will think that life is all about love and that God’s mercy will carry them to his side no matter their actions or preparations for the after life.

Christ made it abundantly clear that he was not on earth during the meridian of time to condemn man. He came to heal man. However, he never once dismissed sin without effort being made by the one who received his forgiveness.

Christ did not forgive the adulteress. He told her that He did not condemn her (not His mission at the time) and to sin no more. Without her repentance, she would not receive forgiveness.

He also clearly taught that man will be judged according to their thoughts, words and deeds. He/she who fails to be ready for His second coming will not survive the day.

There are rules and they must be followed – it is not enough to simply believe.

Chrissy, like many on the Left, have taken Christ’s teachings (which applied to individuals) and transferred them to the state.

They contort the teachings of the Bible and use them to force everyone to ‘take care of the poor’, yet they are the first to cry ‘foul’ when they perceive that the right is trying to force everyone to live by Biblical standards.

It is hypocrisy at its finest.

Jesus teaches baptism (immersion) Romans 6:4, the alternative is Hades or Hell, eternal fire. Chris Matthews, like his fellow MSNBC anchor, Ed Shultz is a true idiot.

Chris Matthews defending prostitutes? sounds about right. I think he personally keeps them all employed in his town, doesn’t he?

It is 100% completely impossible to understand any scripture when reading through the filter of progressive eyes and ears.

Hell = (Hebrew) “Sheol” (Greek) “Hades” really only means the common grave of mankind.
Matthew 5:29,30 and Mark 9:47,48 also read Matthew 10:28

Romans 6:7 NAB: “A man who is dead has been freed from sin.” Kx: “Guilt makes no more claim on a man who is dead.” NWT: “For he who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”

I really never agree with Chris Matthews but he is right here.

Ecclesiastes 9:5, JB: “The living know at least that they will die, the dead know nothing.”
NWT: “For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all…………..

      Greenwood, you quoted Romans 6:7

      So we all need to ask;
Since we are acquitted of our sins by our dying, then what is the point of a further punishment in a fiery hell?

“15And Jehovah God proceeded to take the man and settle him in the garden of E′den to cultivate it and to take care of it.16And Jehovah God also laid this command upon the man: “From every tree of the garden you may eat to satisfaction.17But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.” (Genesis 2:15-17)

Death is the penalty for sin, not continual pain or totment.

“17And to Adam he said: “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and took to eating from the tree concerning which I gave you this command, ‘You must not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground on your account. In pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life.18And thorns and thistles it will grow for you, and you must eat the vegetation of the field.19In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:17-19)

@WHITEFANG……..”what is the point of a further punishment in a fiery hell? ………..none

2 Thessalonians 1:9 These very ones will undergo the judicial punishment of everlasting destruction, or………eternal destruction, eternal ruin, lost eternally, eternal punishment, eternal punishment in destruction, cutting off from life, destroyed, perish, or death.
John 3:16………………..might not be destroyed [ perish] but have everlasting life.

Why would anyone be interested in what Matthews has to say, when he has proven over the years that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about – ever. Maybe he thinks that the more vodka he drinks, the smarter he gets…but it ain’t true. Matthews is the worst of a terrible list of anchors at MSNBC.

And Jesus, in ANGER, upset the tables of the Money Changers in the Temple and shouted: “you shall not use my Father’s house as a den of thieves and robbers, but for prayer!”

      Nope. Jesus never got ANGRY!

Just a reminder to us all that Jesus did display righteous anger at times. When he did, it was always toward the same class of people; the religious establishment.
We should expect foolishness from the mouth of Chris Matthews when he tries to expound upon scripture, for flesh and blood cannot discern spiritual matter. It is we, the professing Christian, that Jesus holds to a higher standard of profession and righteousness. Do our words speak life or death?

It’s not anger, it is righteous indignation. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees. Satan took bits of scripture and used them to temp and test. Matthews is no different than his master. It should not be a shock. A bad tree bears bad fruit.

@Progressive – there are times I wish he would just retire and vanish into obscurity.

The facts are clear, Jesus did at times teach of hellfire and the damnation the wicked will face at the end of time. He also got angry at times, confronting the opponents of the truth with righteous indignation. But he also taught of peace and the plan of salvation and of redemption.

He also showed that the final choice between one side or the other, light or dark, salvation or death, are the choice of each person, their FREE CHOICE to make.
