Earlier this week, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews took to the airwaves to discuss faith and religion. The center of discussion was the host’s views on the Christian faith and Jesus’ teaching. In addition to unfavorable comments about Pope Benedict XVI, he also issued some curious proclamations about Jesus’ teachings.
In commenting about the pope emeritus, the liberal host said he’s never been a fan of Benedict, adding, ”I don’t think he matters.”
As for the Christian faith more generally, Matthews separated its teachings from those embraced by other religious systems, noting that compassion and care for the poor distinguish it.
“What separates Christianity from all the other religions? It’s compassion. It’s looking out for the little people,” he said. “Mary Magdalene is one of my favorite figures from the New testament. She’s a prostitute and Jesus loved her. He was a buddy of hers.”

There is debate, however, surrounding this characterization of Magdalene as a prostitute — one that was advanced during the Christianity’s early years. Also, some would contend that what separates the Christian faith from other religions is its inclusion of a savior — God’s son — who perished to save the sins of humanity.
But Matthews wasn’t done there.
“If you look at the Bible, who’s he curing and who’s he taking care of, Jesus — he’s going after the people who are blind and crippled and outcast for sexual misbehavior, if you will,” Matthews continues. “He’s looking out for those people. He’s not preaching fire and brimstone.”
As Townhall notes, though, Jesus didn’t just roam about healing the afflicted. While this was a major role as presented in the Bible, he also spoke about redemption and what was needed for one to reach heaven (elements some would consider “fire and brimstone”). Consider John 3:3, when he told Nicodemus, a religious leader, that one must be “born again” in order to be with the Lord after death.
Here’s how verses 3-5 read (as per Bible Gateway):
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d]
Of course, that’s only one example. While it’s true that the tactics Jesus used were not “fire and brimstone” in a more vicious sense, he surely preached about heaven and hell and what was expected of humanity.

Mar. 15, 2013 at 3:42pmChrist spoke more of hell than of heaven. He didn’t want us to choose to go there.
A quick search yields these verses where Christ spoke of hell: Matthew 5:22, Matthew 5:29, Matthew 5:30, Matthew 7:19, Matthew 10:28, Matthew 13:40, Matthew Matthew 18:8, 18:9, Matthew 23:15, Matthew 23:33, Matthew 25:41, Mark 9:43, Mark 9:45, Mark 9:47, Mark 9:48, Luke 12:5, Luke 16, John 15:6.
Trouble with someone like Matthews is that they want something to be true, and thus they teach themselves to believe lies.

Mar. 15, 2013 at 11:11amWhat sets Christianity apart from other religions is that it isn’t a religion. It’s a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. All these denominations that man has created are our inventions, not God’s. Judaism is a religion. God laid out every detail of how the Hebrews were to worship Him. The New Testament (New Covenant) does not lay out any such details. Jesus ordained what we now call Communion. He ordained baptism by being baptized. He recognized marriage and condemned divorce. The Apostle Paul provided a little guidance on the behavior of the first churches, but there are no dictates on how to worship. The reason for this is that Christianity is not corporate. It is personal, between you and God. There is a Body of Believers (The Church), but you aren’t a Christian just because you go to church every Sunday. In fact you’re not truly a member of the Church unless you have truly accepted Jesus as you personal Savior. All this church stuff everyone fights over all the time is just made up. As for “fire and brimstone,” Jesus said he came to fullfil the law not destroy it. If you don’t have salvation through Jesus, you will be judged according to the law and condemned. Only through Jesus is there any hope in the hereafter because none of us can survive a comparison to the law’s unyielding standard. Chris Matthews is not a believer (based on his statements and actions) and has no idea what he’s talking about.

Mar. 15, 2013 at 6:34amThis guy and so many others are SO. . . . MISLED, WRONG, MISDIRECTED, IGNORANT, OR JUST PLAIN STUPID!
Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except THROUGH Me.”! (John 14:6)
Think through the ramifications of this statement, in its historical implication, its implication at the time it was said, its ramifications for all eternity, and personally, its ramification to you concerning just HOW you could approach in your human state, a fully HOLY GOD who doesn’t tolerate UNRIGHTOUSNESS!
If you don’t believe in God, fine, your choice, your gamble!
The wisdom provided by the Holy Spirit that is within the Church, those in full Communion and those of our Separated Bretheran (all Baptized Christians) and our Elder Brothers (devout Jews), is important to all of us who not only believe in a Holy, Loving God who JUDGES us in our everyday actions and will ultimately judge us on our time spent here “within time” which is an indication of our understanding of His LOVE, and a example of if we have accepted it, how we have expressed it and how we have shared it.
People don’t want to know TRUTH, so they ignore it to their own and others’ peril.
“God forgive them, they know what not they do. . . ” (Jesus, the Bible)

Mar. 14, 2013 at 9:17pmUnfortunately, what I see Chris missing is, Christianity is not a religion. Religion is man’s attempt to reach (some) God. Live as good a life as possible and hope it’s enough to get to (some) heaven. True Christianity is God’s attempt to reach man. There is nothing we can do to attain salvation. Nothing. It is a gift of God and all (Chris) has to do is accept that gift. To my fellow Christians, I implore you – speak the truth, but don’t forget the, “…in love” part. Of course non-believers have things skewed and twisted – how else can they be, not having the Holy Spirit. So, let’s try to show them grace, as God has showed us grace.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 8:45pmJesus is the God of the Old Testament? Really?
Jesus is the only-begotten son of God or God’s son.
That must mean Isaac is Abraham, because that sacrifice was a foreshadow of the ransom sacrifice of Jesus.

Yes Jesus Christ is Jehova. Jesus declares he is Jehova here:
John 8:58 NAS
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM.”
No one has seen the Father or the Holy Spirit. This means the Burning Bush, etc. was the Son.
John 6:46 NAS
“Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God ; He has seen the Father.
John 5:37 NAS
No man has even heard the father and Jesus proclaims he is God:
[Witness of the Father] “And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.
John 14:7 NAS
[Oneness with the Father] “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also ; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”
John 14:9 NAS
Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip ? He who has seen Me has seen the Father ; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father ‘?
Paul proclaims Jesus to be the Spiritual Rock that followed the Exodus generation. Jehova or Angel of the Lord is JESUS.
1 Corinthians 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
So yes Christ is the God of the Old testament.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 8:07pmMatthew 5:29 NAS
“If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
Matthew 7:19 NAS
“Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
John 15:6 NAS
“If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
Revelation 20:15 NAS
And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 7:34pmRevisionist theology. An attempt to rewrite the bible and such.
Premise 1 – God is perfect. And as a perfect being, he is unchanging.
If you answer that as being correct, then the conclusion would be the God of the Old Testament is the same God of the new testament, as God is unchanging.
You look at the events in the old…and that is God. Same God of the new. Jesus may have done a different message, or at least the recorded messages we know seem softer, but that doesn’t change God.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 6:39pmHow can we expect secularists to understand what we believe? We’re speaking two different languages. Matthews and his ilk use society to determine what’s right. Believers use Jesus’ teachings to determine what is right. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not do away with it.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 5:53pmThe last thing anyone needs on this God given green earth is Chris Matthews interpreting the bible for us. he, like all progressives, try to paint Jesus as a socialist, looking out for the little people, healing the sick and feeding the poor. They conveniently leave out that Jesus dies for all men. Rich, poor, healthy, sick, sinners and saints.
Mt God these people irk me with their intentional misinterpretation of the bible to fit their agenda. Just like they do with the Constitution.

Mar. 14, 2013 at 5:50pmChris Matthews taking God’s name in vain. When people use the bible, God’s word, for their own agenda, that is taking God’s name in vain. The first time Jesus came, he came as the sacrificial lamb. The 2nd time he comes, he is coming as the Lion of the tribe of Judah and will have his vesture dipped in blood. The blood on his vesture is not his own. It is the blood of his enemies.
