President Obama: Iran ‘Year or So’ Away From Nuclear Bomb

JERUSALEM (AP) — Iran is about a year away from developing a nuclear weapon and the United States remains committed to doing everything in its power to prevent that from happening, President Barack Obama said in an exclusive interview aired Thursday on Israeli TV.

Just days before he is to arrive in Israel for his first presidential visit, Obama told Israel’s Channel 2 TV that while he still prefers diplomacy over force, but that a nuclear Iran is a “red line” and all options remain on the table to stop it.

“Right now, we think it would take over a year or so for Iran to actually develop a nuclear weapon, but obviously we don’t want to cut it too close,” he said. “So when I’m consulting with Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) as I have over the last several years on this issue, my message to him will be the same as before: ‘If we can resolve it diplomatically that is a more lasting solution. But if not I continue to keep all options on the table.’”

The timeline for action against Iran has been one of the most fraught disputes in an already tense relationship between Obama and Netanyahu. Israel has repeatedly threatened to act militarily should Iran appear to be on the verge of obtaining a bomb, while the U.S. has pushed for more time to allow diplomacy and economic sanctions to run their course.

Obama’s forecast gives more time than that of Netanyahu, who has signaled that the coming months present a point of no return in dealing with Iran.

The American president nonetheless took a stern tone toward Iran in the half-hour long interview.

“What I have also said is that there is a window, not an infinite period of time, but a window of time where we can resolve this diplomatically and it is in all of our interests” to do this, he said. “They (Iran) are not yet at the point, I think, where they have made a fundamental decision to get right with the international community … I do think they are recognizing that there is a severe cost to continue on the path they are on and that there is another door open.”

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel’s destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups. Tehran says its nuclear program is peaceful and designed to produce energy and medical isotopes, a claim that Israel and many Western countries reject.

Obama said that a nuclear Iran would also be “dangerous for the world. It would be dangerous for U.S. national security interests.”

In the interview, Obama also spoke about his relationship with Netanyahu – claiming it is not as tense as reported – and encouraged Israelis and Palestinians to resume peace talks. He also said he had no immediate plans to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, whom Israel has been pressuring to set free after 28 years in prison for spying for them.

Obama arrives in Israel Wednesday for a three-day visit that is seem primarily as a means to convey the closeness of the U.S.-Israel alliance.

In other words Iran, let us know when you are done building your bunkers? Why get in front of the microphone and fail to say anything that has not been said before? If you want to support Islam President Obama, at least be man enough to say it? At least be man enough to say you support an establishment of religion using public tax payer dollars, so we can work on legally removing you out of office? We’re going to do that anyway?

You would not be saying those things today if you had listened to Israel? You would not be saying these things if you had been standing up for Iranian students getting thrown 30 or 40 ft to the ground and getting their skeletons mangled? You would not be saying these things today President Obama, if the press had said 30 years ago, any support we give these nations of Islam, supports the religion of Islam, and it doesn’t matter if they are Sunnis or something else?

Seems like a strange story given that O has stated on multiple occasions that he will not allow Iran to get a nuclear weapon. So either that was another case of O lying his @ss off, or we will see some action from the great campaigner in the next 12 months.

If Obama is thinking about war with Iran he must believe that the Muslim nations that surround Israel are ready to wipe Israel from the map………and he stalled long enough to give Iran the needed time to finish their nuclear project to finish the job.

I do not place any hope that the U.S. will help Israel if push comes to shove. Not at this time, not with all of the countries aligned against Israel, not with this President.

Obasma is lying. Iran will have one sooner than a year, if they don’t already have one. It would nice (if your were Iran) to have 5 or 6 before testing one & notifying the world.

After Syria, Iraq will fall. Al Qaeda, the gulf States, Saudi Arabia are not going to let go. Obama can’t stop them … won’t stop them.

They go from battle field to battlefield wherever they think they can make a difference & win martial glory. You might be a soldier, but you are no warrior They are. There is a difference. After Syria Iraq will be next. Then it will be Iran’s turn.
  
  Will Iran launch a nuke because several different countries are funding jihadis from a score of countries? Who will they launch it on. The jihadis are going to cross into Iran like Mexican & OTM cross our southwest border. Just figure on another 15 years of war.

  Iran has been a year away from a nuke since the 80′s, and the 7 countries in 5 years plan has been following the script so consistently, that Clark and Kwaitkowski seem to have been validated. Too many countries have been waging proxy wars for so long I find it somewhat disturbing that we’re only pointing the fingers at Iran like they’re the only nation involved. I don’t believe it’s necessary. Our leaders have cried wolf far too many times for me to listen to the same old script. I don’t doubt we’ll wind up at war, I just don’t think it will be about protecting us from an imminent threat. It certainly isn’t going to be about protecting freedom. We’re losing that war miserably due to Americans’ cowardice and apathy. When we go it will be for the MIC and central banks.

  Karen is a Libertarian and the article was cut and pasted on that site by the user nostamj. She ran Congress as a Republican in VA using the Ron Paul model. Her Ph.D. thesis was on the Reagan doctrine on foreign policy. She writes and is a frequent guest for Lew Rockwell. Trying to pass her off as a Democrat or liberal is bearing false witness.

  Read! I did not pass her off as a liberal. I just posted the 1st link I found on my google search.
  
  My 2nd search I might add after you provided a paucity of information. You provided no links for one. The 1st web search turned up addresses & cr@p. I still find it interesting that the 1st reference I found was from a liberal site & not a conservative or libertarian one.
