Bombshell Secret Comes Out During Priest’s Trial for Alleged Sexual Assault
Father William Finnegan is on trial for alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl in England. But that’s not the only trouble he’s in. The Roman Catholic faith leader has a massive, earth-shattering secret — one that came out in court as officials were exploring the abuse case this week. He’s married.
According to multiple news reports, it was announced to jurors that Finnegan, 59, secretly wedded in 1999. After the woman’s previous marriage fell apart, she married the priest and the two told only those close to them about their matrimony.
Finnegan’s wife, whom his lawyer, Jeremy Hill-Baker, identified as Beverley Dawson, subsequently testified in court about how the couple are “deeply in love.”
Finnegan and Dawson, 48, apparently married when they were abroad. And, as the Daily Mail reports, after the wedding the priest would go home to his wife — a former parishioner – every Sunday, returning back to his parish, St. Clare’s Roman Catholic Church in Fagley, Bradford, England, each Tuesday.
The secretive wedding and marriage were obviously bombshell admissions, considering that Catholic priests are required to take a vow of celibacy. Thus, it was acknowledged in court that, regardless of the sex assault court outcome, his days as a priest are over.

The Daily Mail partially transcribed a portion of Hill-Baker’s words before the court — the very statements that brought the secretive marriage to light:
“You may be thinking that he is only human, that Father Bill, as a Catholic priest, has taken a vow of celibacy, condemning himself to a single and lonely life filled with perhaps an underlying sexual frustration because, let’s face it, it is not a natural state for a human to be in.
It would be understandable for you to be thinking, ‘Well, perhaps it just got the best of him with that 17-year-old.’
Mr Hill-Baker then dropped the bombshell that Finnegan married Mrs Dawson, a mother of two, in Cyprus in September 1999.
No, you didn’t mishear me. So deeply in love was he that he was prepared to ignore the Catholic Church’s ban on marriage, a secret which has been kept from almost everyone until now.”
The allegation against him in court is that he forcibly kissed and inappropriately touched a 17-year-old girl last Easter Sunday. Finnegan denies these accusations. While the girl’s family claims he went to the home two days after the alleged incident unfolded and told the young woman he had sexual feelings for her, the priest’s story is radically different.
Finnegan maintains that it was the teenager who kissed him and that he forcefully pushed her away and explained that such interaction was not appropriate. His wife testified that he called her later that day and expressed his dismay at the young girl’s actions.
A verdict in the case could come today.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 11:47amIf we follow that rule then no one would be eligible. We are all tempted, daily. If we even dare to claim that we are not tempted, then we are in fact not only tempted but have already failed; such a claim is the very essence of Pride. Pride is the seed from which the fall of Lucifer grew.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 4:24pmAs a happy little Protestant, I can’t give you a good reason for that; it’s not something I practice or believe in. That said, there are times when there is healing in confession or in merely saying something out loud to another person. Again, I’m not a Catholic, but I have friends who are and even among them –including clergy- there are variations on the “what and whys” of confession. Some certainly see the act of absolution as just that, required for forgiveness of sins. Others see it as little more than opening their dark closet and owning their sins, confessing their humanity and their desire to atone for their short comings. The act of contrition (1000 Hail Marys, for instance) is a required ritual to some, an tangible means to express sorrow for sin to others. Regardless of where they fall, though, it’s not any of this that matters; what matters is their personal relationship with Christ. Even if they are dogmatically in error on the “what and whys” of some issue, provided it doesn’t conflict with the acceptance of Christ as the atonement for all, I’m generally not that concerned with their beliefs.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 5:26pmCelibacy is unnatural, and will lead to immorality time and time again.
Genesis 1:27 “God created man in His own image…”
Genesis 1:28 “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it…”
No one should expect their Priest/Pastor to be free of sin, and anyone who does is impractical. We are all human and to be human is to commit sin. Jesus Christ was crucified and shed his own blood so that man would be forgiven of his sins; Hebrews 9:12 “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”
We do have laws, and those laws have consequences rightfully so. On the other hand, for the majority of history men have regularly taken women in their early teens as wives, and it has only been for something of the last hundred years or less that younger women are “off limits”. Is a 17 year old that turns 18 in a day really that much less of an adult? Regardless of whether or not he is guilty of sexual advance it is not like the girl was 9 or 10. A predator this does not make him. The age difference is more of a concern than her actually being 17. If he was 18 or 19 the same laws would still apply would they not? He is being targeted because he is a priest, and they are looking to make an example of him. Time to get real folks.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 5:42pmThe Marriage ban in the Roman Catholic Church was actually a ban on all marriage not just priests. But when the 12th Century Pope that proclaimed it was reminded that if the Church banned all sexual activity and marriage the Church would destroy itself from the lack of practioners. Because if there is no pro-creation in the Church it will die/cease to exist. So he modified it to only Priests and Nuns.
This came about when a well regarded Monk went to the Jehrico area to recreate Jesus’s 40 day wilderness experience. He did that and came back with a spiritual experience that the Church has been trying to recreate in its followers and priests.
It was never a tenet before the twelfth century. Even Jewish priests were married but the Law stated that when the priest was doing his job at the temple he was to stay at the temple for 30 days and then go home to his wife.

I have never met a man (or woman) who was not tempted to sin, have you? Jesus Himself was tempted in every way that mankind has ever ben tempted. But then today, who among Catholics (or protestants) reads and values the Bible to understand that, and to understand their own errors, if not the errors of their churches who fail to teach them the Bible?
The Lord has delivered us from the Levitical priesthood, and their is now only one mediator (PRIEST) between God and mankind, the man the Messiah Jesus! The Catholic error which Jesus called by the name of the Nicolaitans wrongly re-established a separation between the clergy and the laity which Jesus has eliminated!
Biblical and historical ignorance abound in the churches, may God rebuke, reprove, correct and instruct them, and may God have mercy on those without them. Jesus Name.

Posted on March 16, 2013 at 8:11amI’m torn on that one. Part of me agrees, and if they think they can’t remain celibate, then they shouldn’t be priests. Afterall, Jesus knows what it was like to remain celibate through temptations. But the other part of me thinks if they enforced that, they would run out of priests in today’s society. That that’s all they’ll think about, instead of it clearing their minds for God’s work. If they allowed marriage, like the non-Catholic, maybe there wouldn’t be so many pediphiles.

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 10:14amWell, here we go. There is nothing that says Priest could not marry or have children. This is a man made law by the church.
See the problem arose when the Priest died. All his worldly belonging, Money, House, and Land went to his wife and children. Now remember this is around ad 305-450, the talk starts about with “Bishops, presbyters, deacons, and others with a position in the ministry are to abstain completely from sexual intercourse with their wives and from the procreation of children. (305)” Now the ground work is laid. Now, the million dollar question.
When a priest dies what happens to all their worldly wealth? Yes, the church receives it.

If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? …

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 4:59pmI don’t understand why the Church has not changed its policy on marriage and female priests. The priesthood is dwindling terribly in America because as much as men complain about the old ball-and-chain wife and kids, they want to go to bed next to someone they love. Loving a family does not take away from praising God and I’d think it would bring a priest closer to his parishioners and vice versa.

Part of the priesthood of the Catholic Church requires priest’s to overcome many more worldly desires thatnthe average Joe is required to do. They are to allow the power of God to aid them and use follow Christ’s example to overcome tempation by focusing on and drawing closer to God’s will than that of their carnal mind.
While the Catholic church considers Peter to be the first Pope (Peter was married – he had a mother-in-law) a truer example of the role of the priest would be the Apostle Paul, who wrote many times concerning overcoming wordly desires and remained unamrried and celibate

Priests are not alone though. They are essentially married to the Church. The parishioners are their children. To view a priest as being “alone” is to not understand the priesthood. Earthly desires are just that, desires. When you become a Priest, you become married to the Church.

God is a Righteous God and cannot be in the presence of unrighteousness, even though He LOVES everyone, individually. We limit our ultimate eternity by either giving up sin and having contrition for our sins (remosefulness), or by not seeking God’s forgiveness or denying God completely.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 11:00amThe priest broke his vow of celibacy. Now he is committing adultery with a married woman. A divorce is not recognized in the church as ending a marriage, therefore he is an adulterer.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 10:59amI wish people worried as much about military rapes as what goes on in the catholic church. The DoD estimates 50 sexual assaults PER DAY! Where’s the outrage for that.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 11:07amThe girl could be lying folks if he rejected her advances. We don’t know who is to blame. We were not there. The Judge was not there. If he has indeed married in secret, then he needs to leave the priesthood because he broke his vows to God on staying celibate. Personally, I believe priests should be allowed to marry. If they want to be celibate, then become a monk and stay away from people. Otherwise, if you are a priest around a lot of people, they should allow them to marry. Nothing in the Bible tells anyone not to marry unless you are out there preaching from country to country and in fear of your family becoming a target for those who hate you. But let us not judge until we know the facts and the truth. You know how people can LIE and make up accusations against a good person. I never believe the first thing I hear….NEVER. I know human nature.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 10:52amThe priest is supposed to take of vow of celibacy and poverty. This vow is a vow to Almighty God, not to the Church of Rome. Now, look at how the Bishops and Cardinals live, does that look like poverty to you?

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 11:06amObviously you do not know how a Bishop or Cardinal live.
Do not judge them by the car they use or their clothing or their home, those are all owned by the Church and the local parish or diocese.
All of these men in the priesthood at any level literally have not one penny to their names. They have NO wealth what-so-ever. Their “salary” is to pay for basic needs, food, clothing, and whatever recreation they take during times not on duty, just like all other normal people around the world. But their “salary” is less than a minimum wage worker would make.
Their vehicles are donated by members of the Church. Their homes and all real estate the Church has was left/donated to the Church when a member died. Same with EVERYTHING inside the Vatican, be it artwork or literature or mechanical.
You see a Bishop exit a gated compound but don’t understand that there might be a dozen or two clergy, not just one man. That compound is open to the public and ALSO serves as the office building for the Bishop and his diocese, which means dozen more clergy come in every day to do their jobs as well as tending to services on the weekends at their local parish.
Those “servants” you see that attend to the Bishop are other Priests or Nuns that have taken on roles of service as their obedience to God, some spending their entire life caring for other members of the clergy.
Please don’t speak on things you know nothing about, it makes you a fool.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 11:36amNuns take a vow of poverty, not priests. Some orders, such as the Dominican friars will, but most, especially diocesan clergy simply do not.
So you can put your indignation away now.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 10:49amThis story reminds me of the story of the trap that the Pharisees set for the Messiah. The story of the woman caught in adultery. In biblical times those that threw the first stones were the witnesses to the crime. NO witnesses in person at either altercation.
I am not a Catholic nor do I have a cat it this cat fight, these are just my opinions.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 10:45amEach individual is responsible for their own morals and ethics or lack of morals and ethics.. This priest has lost honor and trust in front of God and all those that had faith in his words that he expressed to his parishioners and all. There is no excuse for such conduct and he like all of us will stand in front of God on Judgement Day.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 10:43amHard to know who to believe because I have seen it both ways. I have seen priests do what he’s accused of doing and ultimately leave the priesthood. On the other hand, I have also seen, more than not, young girls push themselves on priests and also pastors. I have seen things that disturbed me more often than I’d like to say. One Youth Pastor left his wife and kids for a 16 year old girl he impregnated in a local church we used to attend. These young girls are not shy anymore today. Nothing like it was when I grew up in the early 50s. We were all shy and afraid. Not so today. God help us all.

I’m not Catholic, so I don’t really understand why priests have to be celibate. Still, he should’ve stopped being a priest if he wanted to get married instead of keeping it secret. It’s ironic that having sexual contact with a teenager isn’t as bad as being married.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 11:16amthe problem is that many people have jumped on the bandwagon of bashing the Catholic Church and accusing priests of sexual misconduct because they see a paycheck waiting in the wings from all the large Civil suits being filed because the Criminal statute is expired. The RCC has had to pay out 10′s of millions over the last decades to attone for the actions of less than 10% of the clergy and those that either overtly or covertly covered for those clergy that should have been handed over immediately to authorities.
we are all guilty of buying into the MSM cry of “guilty until proven innocent” and that goes DOUBLE for Evangelicals and Liberals when it comes to the Catholic Church. In fact, I would say that the majority of Evangelicals cry LOUDER than the MSM and Liberals against the RCC all the while refusing to look at the plank in their own eye.
The rate of sexual misconduct among the General population, teachers, Police, the RCC, or ANY denomination is the SAME!! about 10%. BUT just like with the Conservative-Liberal coverage, there are different standards. People scream when they hear about a teacher or Priest but ignore their pedophile neighbor because “he/she seemed like such a nice person and was NEVER a problem.”
Did the RCC have a HUGE problem? YES. Are they trying to fix it and remove the cancer? YES. Should we concentrate on ourselves and our own church? YES.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 10:29amThere are priests who leave the order because they fell in love. Instead of violating their oath they get the blessing of the church to leave the order and their vows. This man is a liar and a charlatan, and likely a predator.
