Obama Admin. Trying to Deport German Evangelical Family Seeking Asylum Over Homeschooling
Earlier this month, it was brought to light that a German family who immigrated to the U.S. seeking political asylum may soon be deported by the Department of Homeland Security — and it all involves homeschooling.
Uwe and Hannelore Romeike, along with their six children, wanted to home-school their children in Germany, but were not permitted to do so under German law. They sought and were granted political refuge in the U.S. by an immigration judge in 2010, but now the Department of Homeland Security is claiming that German laws banning homeschooling do not violate the family’s human rights.
(Related: Is Homeschooling a Universal Human Right?)
U.S. Immigration Judge Lawrence Burman, who granted the Romeike’s asylum, said that “the (German) government is attempting to enforce this Nazi-era law against people that it purely seems to detest because of their desire to keep their children out of school.”
According to the Associated Press, however, the Board of Immigration Appeals found Burman’s assertion to be erroneous, adding that the actual record did not support “inflammatory suggestion that it is a Nazi-era law.”
The Romeike’s appeal to the 6th Circuit will hear oral arguments April 23.
“The Obama administration is basically saying there is no right to home school anywhere,” Michael Farris, founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association (which is representing the Romeike family) told Fox News. “It’s an utter repudiation of parental liberty and religious liberty.”
“They are trying to send a family back to Germany where they would certainly lose custody of their children,” Farris said. “Our government is siding with Germany.”
Farris maintains the Germans frown upon home schools because they believe they breed “religious and philosophical minorities” — something he says they would rather do without in their country.
“That means they don’t want to have significant numbers of people who think differently than what the government thinks,” he said. “It’s an incredibly dangerous assertion that people can’t think in a way that the government doesn’t approve of.”
Farris quipped that the Obama administration could grant millions of current illegal immigrants what amounts to amnesty, yet his administration is seeking deport one German family.
“Eleven million people are going to be allowed to stay freely – but this one family is going to be shipped back to Germany to be persecuted,” he said. “It just doesn’t make any sense.”
If returned to Germany, the Romeikes face thousands of dollars in fines, prison sentences and the potential of losing their children, according to reports in the Associated Press and Fox News.
“Families that want to have an alternative education can’t get it in Germany,” Farris said. “Even the private schools have to teach public school curriculum.”
The family decided to move to the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee after German authorities threatened to take away the parents’ custody.
“We are very happy here to be able to freely follow our conscience and to home school our children,” Uwe, a classically trained pianist told Fox News. “Where we live in Tennessee is very much like where we lived in Germany.”
“If we go back to Germany we know that we would be prosecuted and it is very likely the Social Services authorities would take our children from us.”
According to Uwe, German schools were teaching their children values not in line with their own, as Evangelical Christians.
“The German schools teach against our Christian values,” he said. “Our children know that we home school following our convictions and that we are in God’s hands. They understand that we are doing this for their best – and they love the life we are living in America on our small farm.”
“The right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children has been at the pinnacle of human rights,” he said. “But not in this country.”
According to the AP, Romeike also claimed the schools taught witchcraft based on a game played by classmates of his wife when she was in the seventh grade “that involved pushing chairs and glasses around, and dangling a pendulum.”
“It’s [Germany] a democracy. They respect human rights,” said Michael Donnelly, an attorney and HSLDA’s director of international affairs. “But in this area it’s frightening how they treat people who want to do something very simple. There are 2 million children home-schooled in the U.S. … This is not a threat to the German state, but they are treating it that way, and it’s wrong.”
To learn more about how the case has progressed and how the Romeike’s are faring, the family’s attorney and founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), Michael Farris, will speak to the Glenn Beck Radio Program on Monday, March 18, 2013 at approximately 9:05 a.m. ET. Be sure to tune in here.
Those interested in home-schooling or in helping the Romeike family can visit the HSLDA or the National Home Education Legal Defense for more information.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 3:12pmI’m appalled by what’s happened to this family. I’m from Germany. Actually, just got back from there
My mother told me about the story, they think this family is crazy. It’s maddening
If something isn’t working the government should fix it.
Holder’s appeal against this family fits right in with their ideology. Only government can educate our children. It is not even allowed to take your child out of school a day earlier for going on vacation.
Parents have to ask the principal, who will say no. Because of precedent setting.
However, I have to defend Germanys education system somewhat. It is mandatory to go to school for 12 years.
There are 3 different kinds of schools. The lower level is 9 years and then you go to get an apprenticeship of 3 years, which includes some school.
Next one is 10 years, that will shorten the apprenticeship by 6 month.
Then 12 years which is the one for the really smart ones. A child has to be ready for this type in grade 4. Their final grades have to be at least 95% to qualify for university, which of course is subsidised by the taxpayer.
Even waiters, who are serious about this line of work can do a 3 year apprenticeship. That goes for every trade there is, even a sales clerk takes 3 year apprenticeship.
Everyone knows the quality of a German product is very good. The reason for that is the education. Before the financial crisis Germany was the largest manufacturer in the world.
That does not happen just out of th

Posted on March 16, 2013 at 8:08amOpinion: while it is not surprizing that Obama is pro-unionized indoctrinating public schools for others, (his child attends at $34k+ private school) and against homeschooling it is revealing that he shoooove against it even to the point of singling out legal White homeschooling immigrates to deport and there by could be stripped of thier parential rights and Thier Children when he is otherwise supporting illegal immigrates refusing to deport them and pushing for thier full citizenship. This shows how much against homeschooling. And why were this family immigrating becuase same reasons the Christian pilgrims did for freedom to live worship and raise thier children in thier way. Is this action by administration, America US way or Equal justice and enforcement, I think not.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 1:07pmI recall a friends wife telling me about the German ban on home school years ago. I thought little of it at the time but I have become increasingly aware of its significants in light of the reports of C-scope and Core initiatives now taking place in America. At its heart this is about government indoctrination, and children are only allowed to know things that have the government stamp of approval.
So yes, the German government is right this does a great deal to reduce minority religions and philosophies.

Posted on March 15, 2013 at 2:19pmThe Administration has to get rid of this family because they will soon be treating homeschoolers in the US the same way as they are in Germany. As a parent and a teacher I have seen the laws on homeschooling go from “you can’t do that because we don’t know what to do with you” to “ok, here are the rules” to “we need to know that your children are learning the same thing at the same time”. It is just a matter of time. We’ll have national laws on school attendance ages (earlier) and national curriculum where teaching doesn’t matter, just supervising the computer instruction and no one really cares if the children really learn anything, except the party line.

Why do gullible Whites kowtow to hostile Jewish & crypto-Jewish elite, who butcher White soldiers in bankrupting wars, infiltrate & subvert our banks & spying agencies, indoctrinate us in classrooms & mass media, impose trillions in debt, & plunder our jobs & wages?
East Asia is 99% yellow. Africa is 99% Black. West Asia is 99% Brown. But 3rd world colonizers are annihilating Whites, just as Chinese colonizers are annihilating Tibet.

I would never choose to homeschool because that would prevent my children from growing up to be smarter than me, which is what every good parent should want. When public schools incorporate political indoctrination into the curriculum, this should raise a warning flag for parents. At the very least, parents should have the right to home school or send their child to public school as they see fit. For a government to remove the children from the home if the children are home schooled would be reason enough for me to seek asylum elsewhere. Those restrictions placed on others can also be placed on you!

In entrusting your children to public education, I am not assuming that any of their teachers will be smarter than me or have stronger social values than I do. I will still be taking part in my child’s education. I am merely recognizing that I alone cannot possibly be smarter than me and all of my child’s teachers put together. If public schools incorporate political indoctrination into the curriculum, that certainly should raise a warning flag for parents, but this does not happen as much as you probably think it does. A lot of people homeschool because they do not want their kids to receive any exposure to viewpoints with which they do not agree, and they don’t always differentiate between the presentation of such views in a vacuum and their presentation in the context of a full and open discussion that examines all sides of an issue. I want my kids to agree with me because they decide that what I says makes sense, not because they don’t know any better.

They aren’t going to be in school forever. They’re going to be hearing superficially convincing arguments in support of bad ideas for their whole adult life. The sooner they start hearing different views from different people, the better prepared they will be. Trying to isolate them from ideas you don’t agree with isn’t education, it’s brainwashing. Which is more important, that your kids never consider the possibility that some of what you tell them is wrong, or that they are smart? You can’t have both, if you think that you can, then you are dangerously ignorant about how education works, when it does work.
