Two Surprising Faith Leaders Have Just Come Out in Support of Obama’s Universal Background Checks

The gun debate has reached nearly every cohort in America, with politicians, victims of violence and even pastors offering up their ideas about what should be done to prevent murders and mass shootings. Amid the litany of voices, there are some surprising faith leaders calling for universal background checks. Two of the most prominent are the Rev. Franklin Graham and Richard Land.

Known as social (and political) conservatives when it comes to most matters, Graham’s and Land’s stance on background checks may serve as a surprise to some. Considering past disagreements with President Barack Obama’s policies, their views on the contentious gun measure are noteworthy (conservatives have long been highly critical of universal background checks).

As TIME Magazine notes, Graham, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham and the head of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian relief organization, and Land, who heads the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, have been persuaded to back Obama on universal checks. Their decision comes following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

“As ministers, we agreed together that we could stand on a united front for universal background checks,” Graham noted.

But Land cautioned that the checks are not being widely embraced by evangelicals and that Obama will need to tackle the entertainment industry and mental health if he wants additional to support. He also seemed to indicate that universal checks look better on paper than they do in practicality.

“We’re not going to oppose universal background checks — it’s a nice idea but only law-abiding citizens follow that,” he said. “The more the president can make this a multi-pronged the more support he’s going to receive from evangelicals.”

And, perhaps most intriguing, Land suggested that a tax on entertainment violence could be used to help alleviate the violence problem.

“You could tax violence and that money can be used for a special fund to help people who are victims of gun violence,” he suggested.

Despite these issues, Graham and Land decided to stand united in an effort to back universal background checks, with the former telling TIME that the proposal is “reasonable and responsible.”

“There needs to be an all out effort to curtail the culture of violence that effects all of us,” Graham added.

Okay, they’ve jumped the shark and can now be considered NUTS! In this CRIMINALLY violent world HOW are Americans to protect themselves when Courts, Lawyers and Corrupt Politicians want us to protect ourselves with scissors and pens? Don’t they know that 0 is after 1st Amendment Rights ultimately…after the 2nd Amendment is gone? We stand with the “churches” for freedom of speech yet they turn-coat on America’s right to bear arms? THEY ARE STUPID and/or also CORRUPTED!

The easiest way to tell a true servant of God is to remove the money from the equation. If they preach for money they are the false prophets we have been warned about. If they preach because they love God and they do not get paid…at all….then you are probably watching a true servant of God in action..

I like this one: “You could tax violence and that money can be used for a special fund to help people who are victims of gun violence.”

So I guess what he’s saying is that when some gang banger shoots someone he should pay a tax. Or when some guy rapes a woman he should leave a $20 with her to pay the violence tax.

I remember reading somewhere that Jesus said something to the effect that if you don’t have a sword then sell your cloak and buy one. I can’t remember where I read that so don’t quote me on it.

If you have to ask another person’s permission to sell of give away a piece of property, whose property is it? Universal background checks means that you must inform, and then seek permission from the government to sell or give away a firearm even if it’s to a friend or relative.
There are those who say that government wants universal background checks as a prelude to confiscation. That may or may not be true. However, we really should ask ourselves, if the government does not intend to confiscate the guns, why do they want background checks? It has nothing to do with Sandy Hook. Nancy Lanza passed her background checks just fine.

In my opinion, preachers that do not involve themselves in politics are good for organizing a picnic, but their opinions are worth exactly as much (or as little) as a lefty hollywood bugger. Anyone that has to ask you to trust them is probably not very trustworthy. Goes double for people who claim a leadership role.

      Ghost,

“Ultimately though they know that “well regulated†meant well practiced.”

Actually, it meant a whole host of things, including giving up time to be drilled with others in your community, to be deployed at the command of the state or federal government, and to always have on hand a specific type of weapon according to the needs of your local unit. If you think “well practiced” simply means you go down to the shooting range once in a while, that’s complete nonsense. That was certainly not the way wars were fought then (they stood in ranks and had very strict discipline), and its not how they are fought now. So, unless you are advocating every gun owner complete mandatory military/tactical training, than we can say that modern day gun owners are not fulfilling any of the obligations that the founders referred to in the phrase “well regulated.”

Unfortunately, you statist types keep erecting laws and restrictions on those Constitutional actions, functions and tools. This is putting you on notice that we’re no longer going to allow you to continue down this path.

Keep it up, and you may well see an armed march on D.C. Face it guy, we outnumber your kind by a factor of hundreds to one. You couldn’t stop us. And if that does happen, we might as well “ask” that restrictions on things like select fire weapons be removed once and for all.

You don’t know the fight your picking, and I’m glad of it. Notice that I’m not debating you, I’m telling you what’s going to happen. If your side doesn’t don’t dummy up, I really cannot predict the outcome of what will happen to y’all once our side is mobilized. There simply aren’t enough libertarians to restrain the more passionate…bedrock conservative types, that may come out of the woodwork with rope. You people would do well to simmer down and back off.

No debate, no conversation, no compliance. Learn, if you value continuing to have any voice in this nation. If you really do think you’re smart, now is the time to start proving it.

I’m certainly not advocating for either of those things–I’m just pointing out that the right to bear arms was, in the intent of the founders, tied to any number of specific and occasionally burdensome civic obligations. Actually, come to think of it, perhaps we should make membership in the national guard obligatory for anyone who wants to own a gun. Something makes me that this won’t go over too well with the crowd here. Most of them are just interested in keeping their toys for their own reasons.

Hahaha. More silly bluster. Go ahead–march on Washington. stop talking about it and do it. You talk a big game, but in the end you are just posting nonsense on a Conservative website where you know people probably won’t call you on it. Big man!

And really, I can’t think of a better justification for gun control than the idea of a bunch of armed nuts taking shots at their fellow citizens because they decided they don’t like the law.

      @Pubes:

The forefathers wanted us to be armed and ready. Not only for personal defense or to repel foreign invaders like the Brits, but to defend ourselves from our own government should it decide to turn on it’s citizens. Anyone that has a lick of sense about them would understand that a well-regulated militia should not be regulated by the government. How can anyone be so stupid as to use that argument has, in my opinion gone full ******. And you know you never go full ******.

      Nesmond,

“Anyone that has a lick of sense about them would understand that a well-regulated militia should not be regulated by the government.”

Hahaha. Well, let’s see what the Constitution says about militias:
Article 1 Section 8: Powers of Congress:
      “To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;”

Hahaha. How’s that for your “lick of sense”?

Universal background checks will lead to a national gun registry, which will make it easier for obama’s rogue government to confiscate our firearms – this is obama’s goal. Give them an inch …

We must prevent any further UNCONSTITUTIONAL infringements upon our 2nd Amendment rights.

Cars are registered, and no one is arguing that this inevitably leads to a universal confiscation of cars.

Driving on public roads is not a Constitutionally guaranteed right. As a matter of fact, if you buy a car outright, keep it on private property and never drive on public roads, you do NOT have to register your vehicle, nor do you have to obtain insurance. Registering vehicles with the DMV and obtaining insurance or proving some other way of financial responsibility is done as part of the agreement you make with your state govt in order to drive your private property on public roads.

That stinging feeling on your face? Oh, that’s because you just got b*tch-slapped.

Of course, you are all missing the point. The point is that registration does not inevitably lead to confiscation. There is no evidence that it should–it’s NOT a slippery slope. Simple as that.

No, you miss the point entirely. Nobody registers cars to confiscate them. All gun registration results in bad things for gun owners.

But of course, you know this.

Register, don’t register, we don’t care. We’re not going to be participating, and there’s not a damned thing you or your lackies can do about it. Want to try and convince us otherwise? Too bad. You’ve had your day, and are no longer part of the “conversation”. Too bad.

Nice idea there Reverends. When you can guarantee tha DeShuan selling out of the back of his Escalade in a back alley in Chicago is pulling out his iPad and doing a background check on TeQuean and Antwuann before the money changes hands for the 9mm he has, we can talk.

Since criminals by their very nature will not and do not obey the laws and since I need to be on the level field to protect myself from those criminals – I refuse to be labeled a criminal because I didn’t run a background check on my son before I gave him his first 12 guage for Christmas

I hear a lot of this goofy bluster on these sites. Of course, none of it comes to anything. But go ahead–shoot a cop who comes to your house to enforce the law. Shoot a guy with children and a family just because you think the Constitution is something you can interpret however you like. Shoot someone because you don’t actually believe in the rule of law (which is the only actual way a society stays free in the first place). Shoot someone because you want to keep your toys. We’ll see how much sympathy you get, big man.

Ok. I come out in support of background checking and thorougly vetting the mental health and stability of these pastors and everybody that attends their church. Further, I support restricting their right to preach to only cover 4 topics, that I get to choose. Also, I’m in support of restricting the number of people who are allowed to sit in their church pews. What NEED do they have of thirty people on Sunday, when 10 will suffice?

Wanna play, progs? How about this. Shove it up your collectivist arses. Does that work for you?
