Horror: Tourist Reportedly Gang Raped on Cycling Trip to India

(TheBlaze/AP) — A Swiss woman who was on a cycling trip in central India with her husband has been gang-raped by between four and eight men, police said Saturday. The attack comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus outraged Indians.
Authorities detained and questioned 13 men in connection with the latest assault, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest in Madhya Pradesh state after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said.
The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple’s mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185).
39-year-old woman was treated at a hospital in the nearby city of Gwalior.
A gut-wrenching photo showed the woman walking while being escorted by police to the hospital. Her face was concealed with a hood, a common practice in India, where law does not allow rape victims to be identified publicly to protect them from the stigma attached to rape in the conservative country.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, one woman is raped every 20 minutes in India.Β But according to Reuters, police estimate that only four out of 10 rapes are reported since women are afraid of being shamed by their families or communities.
Indian television stations showed scores of police searching the forest where the attack occurred.
Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman Tilman Renz described the case as “deeply disturbing” and Swiss diplomats have called on Indian authorities “to do everything to quickly find the perpetrators so that they can be held accountable.”
Last month, the Swiss government issued a travel notice for India that included a warning about “increasing numbers of rapes and other sexual offenses” in the South Asian nation.
India has seen outrage and widespread protests against attacks on women since December’s fatal gang-rape of a young woman on a moving bus in New Delhi, the capital. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India’s treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.
One of six suspects in the December attack was found dead in a New Delhi jail this past week. Authorities said he hanged himself, but his family and lawyer insisted foul play was involved. Four other men and a juvenile remain on trial for the attack.

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 10:38amThis IS what happens to woman under Sheria law. Those trying to implement Sheria law, in countries that do not have it, will attack woman that are not Sheria compliant causing fear amongst woman. As a result, woman stop traveling alone, going out at night, drinking, etc to avoid being attacked. So they get their way (Sheria law) without it being on the gov’t books.
Wake up America CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood are not our friends. Obama is allowing them to infiltrate here.

Posted on March 18, 2013 at 1:32pmThe_Pointy_End, please check your facts. India is a 70% Hindu country and is not under Sharia law. I was in India for nearly two weeks earlier this year and it is true women are second class citizens but it has nothing to do with Islam I promise. I’m not sure why rape is so fashionable in India and doubt any one person knows conclusively but I suppose it stems from the conservative patriarchal society that places women below men. When that happens and the gender ratios become skewed due to families aborting or allowing female babies to die, it dehumanizes women. They become property. Add millions of sex starved young men to the mix and ta-da!

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 9:01amWhere’s the real story about most Americans today who stay home because they have to prioritize their expenses, such as a roof over their head or food on the table? A vacation to far away India? Parents today get a DVD of Disney World, toss in a packet of microwave popcorn and tell the kids; enjoy!

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 8:49amI might just be spiff balling here but I’m somehow reminded of those hikers that cling to the borders of tourist friendly places such as Iran and North Korea. Especially when they are Americans that could hike in Alaska or Canada. Instead they have to go where they can get kidnapped and held for ransom. If I wanted to see India, I’d watch a DVD. Thanks anyway.

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 6:57amGreat point, the problem is that many naive westerners, especially liberals think that the world is a big Amusement Park full of good cute people ready to receive them, in their stupidity they look at the Western civilization as the sole evil in the world, when in fact this is a tough and brutal World. I’ve been to Africa and South America and I’ve seen places where people can kill you for 1 or 2 dollars, some places in the West are also hell holes, London or Paris are dirty and violent cesspools as well.

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 4:22amIt’s a shame that India is having such an increase in violent crimes. Most of the people I have met from India have seemed to be really fine people. But that said, why would anyone want to go on a cycling trip in any third world country? Likely only a fuzzy-feely liberal couple would have such a false sense of security. It’s a dangerous world folks, best not forget it!

Posted on March 18, 2013 at 4:08amYou’re so right! I biked across USA in ’76, and even then there were places of danger. People in passing cars threw garbage and filled pop bottles at us in central Oregon, threw firecrackers and forced us off the road in southern Illinois, and sic’d dogs on us and threw rocks at us in eastern Kentucky. Those were pretty tame compared to what can happen in a 2nd or 3rd world country. I tried to bike from Capetown to the Cape in ’90 and was warned not to “…because the baboons would get me.” But in 20 summers of biking in Switzerland and France, there was never any problem whatsoever.

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 12:21amYeah, I want to bash India and all other countries where this type of barbaric crime happens on a daily basis. I’ll start with the United States.
Until the liberal mindset that either fails to punish or the punishment for such crimes is light it will continue unabated across the world. Yes, it concerns me deeply that this happens in other countries or anywhere for that matter. But what I find the most disturbing is that it happens here, everyday. Until such time that liberalism is abolished and once again the punishment fits the crime there will only be an increase in barbaric criminal acts as the social structure deteriorates further and the population increases. Murder rape, child molestation, producing and consuming child pornography, armed robbery. attempted armed robbery, and probably a lot more crimes that I haven’t even thought of yet, should all carry a mandatory death sentence. Until society and the governments they elect start enacting these strict but suitable punishments, society as a whole will continue to slide further into barbarism This continuing slide backwards will inevitably lead to complete societal breakdown as the citizens become more and more aware that their governments are inept and useless. Society will revert back to every man for himself because to survive there will be no choice.Personally I am sick of hearing these terrible crimes committed against the innocent when the solution is so damned simple.

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 1:14amWhile I’m in full Rant mode. It was stupid for them to go to India, knowing that a criminal element existed that could do such horrible things. What is it with people that ride bicycles for leisure anyway. They think nothing bad can happen to them? I mean they have to be the dumbest people on the planet or naive to the point of again being the dumbest people on the planet. I see the idiots everyday here all dressed up in their little black skin tight speedo’s and the little pointy helmets peddling along in the middle of the road doing all of 7 MPH on a highway with a speed limit of 50 MPH. Always there is a line of traffic backed up behind them. People blowing horns, cursing at them and some even nearly hitting them. When asked why they do this they all say the same thing. “Uhhh, Legally we have as much right to the road as anyone else.” Well, I have the right to go swimming with lead underpants on but it’s a really stupid idea. For everyone of them that gets killed each year they should have “Duhhh, Legally I have as much right to the road as anyone else” as their epitaph. There are bicycle riders that it’s obvious they ride a bike because of the gas prices. They have their work clothes on and usually a bag or lunchbox tied to the handlebars.Guess where on the road these riders ride? In the middle of the road daring anyone to hit them and backing up traffic? NO. They ride on the shoulder where anyone with an ounce of common sense would ride a bicycle.

India used to be a fairly safe place to go in the past. I’ve been there three times. I would go there no longer! The criminals have taken it over, and it is no longer safe. Of course, even then, as a woman, you couldn’t wander around alone. Ever. Even if you had to take a 12-year boy along with you, it was advised.

They’re only champions of OTHER LIBERAL women’s rights. Those who believe in the same moral garbage they do. Then their public behavior is what these dredges of humanity use to claim they’re proof that women are sluts and deserve this kind of treatment.

Posted on March 16, 2013 at 11:14pmFrom the NYTimes 1/13/2013:
“But women in New Delhi and throughout India say that their gender makes them vulnerable to attack from a vast and growing sea of unattached and unemployed young men who view womenβs success as the reason for their failure.”
This is not due to anti- West sentiment. It is due to 16 million more males ,then females in India in there late teens-early 20′s, without jobs. etc, running in groups committing all sorts of crimes, not just rape. It isn’t about country of origin. Only 4 out of 10 rapes are reported in India and last year there were 25,000 reported. So now unfortunately, this poor Swiss woman will join the sad ranks of tens of thousands this year in India.
