VATICAN CITY (AP) — The honeymoon that Pope Francis has enjoyed since his remarkable election hit a bump Friday, with the Vatican lashing out at what it called a defamatory and “anti-clerical left-wing” media campaign questioning his actions during Argentina’s murderous military dictatorship.
On Day 2 of the Francis pontificate, the Vatican denounced news reports in Argentina and beyond resurrecting allegations that the former Jorge Mario Bergoglio failed to openly confront the junta responsible for kidnapping and killing thousands of people in a “dirty war” to eliminate leftist opponents.
Bergoglio, like most Argentines, didn’t publicly confront the dictators who ruled from 1976-83, while he was the leader of the country’s Jesuits. And human rights activists differ on how much blame he personally deserves.

Top church leaders had endorsed the junta and some priests even worked alongside torturers inside secret prisons. Nobody has produced any evidence suggesting Bergoglio had anything to do with such crimes. But many activists are angry that as archbishop of Buenos Aires for more than a decade, he didn’t do more to support investigations into the atrocities.
On Thursday, the old ghosts resurfaced.
A group of 44 former military and police officers on trial for torture, rape and murder in a concentration camp in Cordoba province in the 1970s wore the yellow-and-white ribbons of the papal flag in Francis’ honor. Many Argentine newspapers ran the photo Friday.
The Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi noted that Argentine courts had never accused Bergoglio of any crime, that he had denied all accusations against him and that on the contrary “there have been many declarations demonstrating how much Bergoglio did to protect many persons at the time.”
He said the accusations against the new pope were made long ago “by anti-clerical left-wing elements to attack the church. They must be firmly rejected.”
The harsh denunciation was typical of a Vatican that often reacts defensively when it feels under attack, even though its response served to give the story legs for another day.
It interrupted the generally positive reception Francis has enjoyed since his election as pope on Wednesday, when even his choice of footwear — his old black shoes rather than the typical papal red — was noted as a sign of his simplicity and humility. In fact, many have wondered if the pope’s election will signal a positive turning point for the church.
There was one clearly unscripted moment Friday, when the 76-year-old Francis stumbled briefly during an audience with the cardinals, but he quickly recovered. And for the second day in a row, Francis slipped out of the Vatican walls, this time to visit an ailing Argentine cardinal, Jorge Mejia, who suffered a heart attack Wednesday and was in the hospital.

This upbeat narrative of a people’s pope who named himself after the nature-loving St. Francis of Assisi has clashed with accusations stemming from Bergoglio’s past.
The worst allegation is that as the military junta took over in 1976, he withdrew support for two Jesuit priests whose work in the slums of Buenos Aires had put them in direct contact with the leftist guerrilla movement advocating armed revolution. The priests were then kidnapped and interrogated inside a clandestine torture center at the Navy Mechanics School.
Bergoglio said he had told the priests — Orlando Yorio and Francisco Jalics – to give up their slum work for their own safety, and they refused. Yorio later accused Bergoglio of effectively delivering them to the death squads by declining to publicly endorse their work. Yorio died in Uruguay in 2000.
Jalics, who had maintained silence about the events, issued a statement Friday saying he spoke with Bergoglio years later and the two celebrated Mass together and hugged “solemnly.”
“I am reconciled to the events and consider the matter to be closed,” he said.
Bergoglio told his official biographer, Sergio Rubin, in 2010, that he had gone to extraordinary, behind-the-scenes lengths to save the men.
The Jesuit leader persuaded the family priest of feared dictator Jorge Videla to call in sick so Bergoglio could say Mass instead and take the opportunity to successfully appeal for their release, Rubin wrote.
Lombardi said the airing of the accusations following Francis’ election was “characterized by a campaign that’s often slanderous and defamatory.”
Earlier this week, Lombardi issued a similar denunciation of an advocacy group for victims of sexual abuse, accusing it of using the media spotlight on the conclave to try to publicize old accusations against cardinals. The accusations, Lombardi said, are baseless and the cardinals deserve everyone’s “esteem.”
The accusations against Bergoglio were fanned by Horacio Verbitzky, an investigative journalist who was a leftist militant in the 1970s and is now closely aligned with the government. He has written extensively about the accusations in Argentina’s Pagina12 newspaper, a left-wing daily known for advocacy journalism.
Adolfo Perez Esquivel, who won the 1980 Nobel Peace Prize for documenting the junta’s atrocities, said this week that “Bergoglio was no accomplice of the dictatorship.”

“Perhaps he didn’t have the courage of other priests, but he never collaborated with the dictatorship,” Esquivel said on Buenos Aires’ Radio de la Red.
Argentine political analyst Ignacio Fidanza concurred.
“What they’re demanding is that during the dictatorship he should have planted himself in the Plaza de Mayo and shouted against it,” he told The Associated Press. “It was probably more effective to speak in silence, since it was an extreme situation.”
Human rights investigators in Argentina have been unable to make any other cases against Bergoglio from the junta years, other than the allegations concerning the two Jesuits and that he failed to help a family find their murdered daughter’s illegally adopted baby.
But activists are also angry that as leader of the Argentine church, he has never acknowledged or apologized for what they describe as the church’s active institutional support of the military government, said Gaston Chillier, who tracks the country’s human rights cases as director of the Center for Legal and Social Studies.
The church was so deeply in league with the dictators that when the Inter-American Human Rights Commission came for an inspection in 1979, the Argentine navy moved many detainees to an island owned by the diocese during the visit.

“He is responsible during Argentina’s period of democracy for continuing a cover-up,” Chillier told the AP. “His knowledge of these cases clearly shows that he cannot deny the torture and the systematic theft of babies.”
Bergoglio testified in 2010 that he didn’t know anything about baby thefts until well after the dictatorship.
Since Bergoglio became archbishop in 1998, his church has issued several apologies for failing to do more to protect people from violence that came from both the right and the left. The latest, in October 2012, was the most forceful, and it also, for the first time, asked Catholics to come forward with whatever evidence they may have to support Argentina’s human rights trials.
But Chillier says Bergoglio could have done more to make the church help identify children and the bodies of detainees as well as identify those responsible for atrocities.
“It’s one thing to acknowledge what you failed to do, but another entirely to apologize for what you actually did,” Chillier said.
Despite these criticisms and allegations, the new pope has been revered by many for his humble demeanor and frugality.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 6:53amA big question is: since the Socialist media lies consistently, what was the real story on Argentina’s “junta”? Did they do murder and mayhem? Or is it another lie like Bosnia, when it turned out that the reasons for going in there were not true? (For example, the third “mass grave” of less than 100 was found in 2011, despite the constant refrain of “hundreds of thousands” of civilians.)
Was it like the revisionist history of Augusto Pinochet, who, while ruthless, took a country from a near-communist basket case with murder and mayhem, to a thriving representative republic?
The problem with the left is that they lie whenever it suits them. Even if there is a real situation, because of those lies, no one believes them.
When it became in vogue to claim “global warming” and similar lies, is it any surprise that the same liars are not listened to when garbage in the oceans is claimed? It may well be true that international shipping has dumped a lot of ****. But when groups routinely lie, how do you know? It’s like the claim of plastic, which breaks down quickly in sunlight or salt water, lasts for 20+ years. It’s literally impossible. Or the “river of oil at the bottom of the gulf” when oil is less dense than water.
Why even listen to the left at all?

We’ve been facing it in the land of the free and there is particular importance to us being victorious in putting that movement back in its trash container. Rick Santorum’s CPAC Speech explained it pretty well. (The CPAC speeches are on youtube by the way.) We just cannot be defeated by the anti Bible, anti religion communists, especially not here and especially not in the house of God.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 10:16amTo the Mary..mother of God people..You really should read the Bible for yourselves..
Luke 11:27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
Luke 11:28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
John 16:23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
All prayer should be directed to our triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that we can pray to one or all three, because all three are one. To the Father we pray with the psalmist, “Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray” (Psalm 5:2). To the Lord Jesus, we pray as to the Father because they are equal. Prayer to one member of the Trinity is prayer to all. Stephen, as he was being martyred, prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59). We are also to pray in the name of Christ. Paul exhorted the Ephesian believers to always give “thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20). Jesus assured His disciples that whatever they asked in His name—meaning in His will—would be granted (John 15:16; 16:23). Similarly, we are told to pray to the Holy Spirit and in His power. The Spirit helps us to pray, even when we do not know how or what to ask for (Romans 8:26; Jude 20).

Stop spreading your anti-Catholic Jack Chick propaganda. Here are just a few thyings Chick’s comic books teach.
The Catholic Church keeps “the name of every Protestant church member in the world” in a “big computer” in the Vatican for use in future persecutions.[1]
But the conspiracy is much broader than this, and it has been going on for a very long time. In the sixth century, for instance, Catholic leaders manipulated the Arabian tribesman Mohammed into creating the religion of Islam to use as a weapon against the Jews and to conquer Jerusalem for the pope.[2]
The Jesuits instigated the American Civil War, supporting the Confederate cause and seeking to undermine the Union. When they failed, they arranged the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.[3] Later, they formed the Ku Klux Klan.[4]
“Jesuits worked closely with Marx, Engels, Trotsky, Lenin, and Stalin” to create Communism, and it was “believed that soon . . . Communism would rise up as the new strong daughter of the Vatican.”[5] It was Rome that instigated the Bolshevik Revolution and the murder of the czar’s family.[6] The Communist “liberation theology” movement also is a Vatican plot.[7]
The Nazi Holocaust of the 1940s was a Vatican-controlled attempt to exterminate Jews and heretics.[8] Further, “Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco were backed by the Vatican for the purpose of setting up a one-world government to usher in the ‘˜Millennial Kingdom’ under Pope Pius XII.”[9]

Mar. 16, 2013 at 11:29amThe Vatican conspiracy is so extensive that, through the Jesuits, Rome controls the Illuminati, the Council on Foreign Relations, international bankers, the Mafia, the Club of Rome, the Masons, and the New Age movement.[10]
The Jesuits created the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, Unity, Christian Science, and other religious groups.[11]
“Pope John Paul II has been a good Communist for many years”[12] and engineered a phony assassination attempt against himself in 1981 to shame Islam into warming relations with the Vatican, since the would-be killer was a Muslim.[13]
And Chick isn’t just anti-Catholic, he’s anti Evangelical and Protestant too. Please be aware of this hate filled man’s propaganda. I tried to post a link to “The Nightmare World Of Jack T. Chick” but the Blaze won’t let me for some reason.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 8:59pmtheotherberean Time for your bible lesson. ! 1 John 4:6 which says, “We are of God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and he who is not of God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”. This is very powerful one should read and meditate on these words not just gloss over them.
How did the Father send them? Matthew 28:18 ” With all power from heaven” That’s how.
John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” That means then and now not just one generation, or the doctrine of infallibility forever.
Matthew 28:19″Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”
Now this proves this authority was passed on because the apostle could not live “unto the end of the world.” Also note they were told to teach all nations not to pass out Bibles for people to do this on their own without the aid of Jesus’ Church to decide what is true or false.
2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things that you have heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” Thus this passage shows that authority was pass on to four generations. E.g. , Paul, 2nd, Timothy 3rd, fait

Mar. 16, 2013 at 6:23pmCatholics won’t objectively look at the church of Rome. She is full of blasphemy and lies. Her rituals came from the the highly ritualized pagans.
“The Pope is not simply the representative of Jesus Christ. On the contrary, he is Jesus Christ Himself, under the veil of the flesh, and who by means of a being common to humanity continues His ministry amongst men … Does the Pope speak? It is Jesus Christ Who is speaking. Does he teach? It is Jesus Christ Who teaches. Does he confer grace or pronounce an anathema? It is Jesus Christ Himself Who is pronouncing the anathema and conferring the grace. Hence consequently, when one speaks of the Pope, it is not necessary to examine, but to obey: there must be no limiting the bounds of the command, in order to suit the purpose of the individual whose obedience is demanded: there must be no cavilling at the declared will of the Pope, and so invest it with quite another than that which he has put upon it: no preconceived opinions must be brought to bear upon it: no rights must be set up against the rights of the Holy Father to teach and command; his decisions are not to be criticized, or his ordinances disputed. Therefore by Divine ordination, all, no matter how august the person may be — whether he wear a crown or be invested with the purple, or be clothed in the sacred vestments: all must be subject to Him Who has had all things put under Him.” -Evangelical Christendom, January 1, 1895, pg. 15,

Mar. 16, 2013 at 3:27amLiberation Theology in Catholic Church= Christianized South American Marxism
Liberation theology is a POLITICAL MOVEMENT in Catholic theology which interprets the teachings of Jesus Christ in relation to a liberation from unjust economic, political, or social conditions. It has been described by proponents as “an interpretation of Christian faith through the poor’s suffering, their struggle and hope, and a critique of society and the Catholic faith and Christianity through the eyes of the poor”, and by detractors as Christianized Marxism.
Although liberation theology has grown into an international and inter-denominational movement, it began as a movement within the Catholic Church in Latin America in the 1950s–1960s. Liberation theology arose principally as a moral reaction to the poverty caused by social injustice in that region. The term was coined in 1971 by the Peruvian priest Gustavo Gutiérrez, who wrote one of the movement’s most famous books, A Theology of Liberation. Other noted exponents are Leonardo Boff of Brazil, Jon Sobrino of El Salvador, Óscar Romero of El Salvador, and Juan Luis Segundo of Uruguay.
Note: In South America some Jesuit priests believing they had the ‘go ahead” from St. Ignatius himself, their founding father, and a military man, took up arms and started killing people.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 9:40amPope Francis chose to become a Jesuit as a young man. During the dirty war, the Jesuit order threw him under the bus because he would not stand with the Marxists, which some in the order (the Liberation Theologists) were doing.
He was associated with a theology in the church called Communion and Liberation (don’t just read wiki), which advocated that the problems in the church with left leaning (Marxist) infiltrators even within the Vatican, was the result of getting away from the basic fundamentals in the bible and embracing outside political idologies.
The group he associated himself with advocates that the bible is not just a book to be read, but to be lived every moment so that followers are able to live their lives in Communion with the Lord (through the Holy Spirit) and only through individuals chosing to live by God’s law each and every day in all things, could the liberation of man be obtained. They stood up against Communism within the Church. This is what earned Pope Francis and others the blessings of Pope John Paul.
So far this is what I have seen this man do, live by faith and not by political ideologies.

New developments regarding denial of Christ
Pope Benedict 16 ALSO DENIES CHRIST LORD!
Links on topic 08-28-11
Prophecy amply declares that before Jesus is to arrive, Antichrist must set up his religio/political power. This “woman on the beast” in Rome is becoming so graphically blunt today. It’s sadly amazing to see how most Catholics as well as Protestants can’t see this. It’s almost as if no one is reading a Bible now-a-days! Today’s Christian world reminds me of the people in 70AD. Had they believed in a simple prophecy of our Lord in Matthew 24 that was declared a mere 40 years prior, they would have been spared their lives.
Matthew 24:15-16, “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:”
Historic Fact is…
In A.D.66 when Cestius came against the city, but unaccountably withdrew, the Christians discerned in this the sign foretold by Christ, and fled while 1,100,000 Jews are said to have been killed in the terrible siege in A.D. 70. (The attack of the Roman warrior Titus occurred in 70AD killing the 1,100,000 Jews) Eusebius, Church History, book 3, chap. 5
Like back then, today we see many are ignoring the Bible and the writer of it. The amazing thing is, today’s world is literally jam packed with prophetic events! Why they choose to lie to themselves and

Stated in Congressional Record: House Bill 1523 on February 15, 1913, pages 3215-6.
The oath also appears in its entirety, in the book, THE SUPPRESSED TRUTH ABOUT THE ASSASSINATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, by Burke McCarty, pages 14-16).
“When a Jesuit of the minor rank is to be elevated to command, he is conducted into the Chapel of the Convent of the Order, where there are only three others present, the principal or Superior standing in front of the altar. On either side stands a monk, one of whom holds a banner of yellow and white, which are the Papal colors, and the other a black banner with a dagger and red cross above a skull and crossbones, with the word INRI, and below them the words IUSTUM, NECAR, REGES, IMPIOUS. The meaning of which is: It is just to exterminate or annihilate impious or heretical Kings, Governments, or Rulers. Upon the floor is a red cross at which the postulant or candidate kneels. The Superior hands him a small black crucifix, which he takes in his left hand and presses to his heart, and the Superior at the same time presents to him a dagger, which he grasps by the blade and holds the point against his heart, the Superior still holding it by the hilt, and thus addresses the postulant:”
Who says: I….by the Pope’s power….have the right to depose heretical kings, princes, states, commonwealths and governments, all being illegal without his sacred confirmation, that they be safely destroyed.”

Galatians 4:4-5, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”
This passage alone proves Mary was not sinless. Like those redeemed “under the law” she was “under the law” as well. And to be “under” means to be “under the curse” of the law.
Galatians 3:10, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.”

Mar. 16, 2013 at 3:09amWe are all sinners. The first Bishop of Rome, Peter, denied Christ three times. Jesus still forgave him and used Peter to build the Catholic Church. His successors have been saintly to extremely sinful. There was only one man that was perfect, that is Jesus. In the end the church is not a collective and the sins of one man should not be made to rest in another. There is no amount of apologizing for other people’s sins that can take away pain from history. One sincere apology is good enough for me Forgiveness is a major tenet of the catholic faith and we should not be judges.

“I told you I would willingly give you a blessing. Since many of you do not belong to the Catholic Church and others are non-believers, from the bottom of my heart I give this silent blessing to each and every one of you, respecting the conscience of each one of you but knowing that each one of you is a child of God. Peter Hans Kolvenbach. His election was immediately relayed to Pope Benedict XVI, who confirmed him in the post. Many have marked the similarities between Nicolás and former Superior General Fr. Father Arrupe, like his eventual successor, was a Spanish missionary in Japan; Nicolás has described Arrupe, whom he had earlier had as Provincial Superior, as a “great missionary, a national hero, a man on fire”. If you can get a copy of a Catholic Bible, read the Book of Wisdom. It clearly shows how the unbeliever hates the righteous. Bottom line, unbelievers are threatened down to their core because at some level they KNOW–because God’s laws are written on their hearts–they are wrong. The mere presence of a righteous, God-fearing person makes them extremely uncomfortable.

Chick’s claim that Communism is a creation of the Vatican is one that does not pass the common sense test. Historically, Communism has been militantly atheistic, and the Church has condemned it in extremely forceful terms.
Neither is the claim that “liberation theology”—the misguided attempt of some third-world priests to fuse Catholicism and Marxism—credible as a Vatican plot. The Vatican cracked down on the movement and censured its theologians.

Fill the prisons with them? Perhaps they can be registered like sex offenders and not be allowed to associate with other leftists. I know, that would be unconstitutional, but a fellow can dream can’t he?

Mar. 16, 2013 at 10:04am“The Pope is not simply the representative of Jesus Christ. On the contrary, he is Jesus Christ Himself, under the veil of the flesh, and who by means of a being common to humanity continues His ministry amongst men …”
“The Pope is of so great dignity, and so exalted that he is not a mere man, but as it were God. and the vicar of God.” -Ferraris Ecclesiastical dictionary
“The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Chapter XXVII, p. 218, “Cities Petrus Bertanous”.
THIS IS BLASPHEMY!!!

Mar. 16, 2013 at 10:59amMAX: Say ” hi” to the folks at Obama Atheism Central. They have obviously provided you with a plethora of twisted, lying propaganda which is typical. The Pope is merely God’s representative on earth guided by the Holy Spirit ..as was Peter, the first Poe. He is NOT God. No Catholic believes that. Troll elsewhere.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 12:45amHmmm let me guess – pretty much everything? Since the Church requires a person to align his life with God’s plan rather than expecting the Church to align itself with the world…
The Word of God (Bible) is pretty clear
I suggest if you take issue with the Catholic Church (or any other Bible based church) as she adheres to the pricniples of God Almighty, perhaps you should join the local Episcopal or Unitarian Church. They follow the world rather than Jehovah God – Word of caution though – they tend to make you feel good without teaching you how to be good in God’s sight – but hey – sure you will be quite comfortable there – though if I were you , I would have serious concerns about your immortal souls – but hey – that is your choice
But hey – if you want to buck that idea – feel free to – The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Your choice…choose wisely since you can’t be good enough on your own to justify yourself to a Holy, Righteous God – you would be wise to accept His gift of salvation.
But I will not argue with you, cajole, guilt you, entice you… – I am only commanded to go and preach the gospel – I am not resposible for your decision. See – I am off the “hook” so to speak because I am telling you – what you do with God’ message is between you and Him.
Have a problem with what He says is right and wrong? Take it up with Hiim. You don’t have to persuade me -Sway Him – the Eternal, Unc

Mar. 16, 2013 at 12:20amPersecution against Christianity or prosecution against a !70 billion dollar a year empire that only funnels 2% back to charitable giving. If the Catholic Church were a charity that didn’t have the word Christ in it, all the pious homosexual leaders would be on handcuffs, and they wouldn’t be the kind they use at their Saturday night parties.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 12:57amblah blah blah lies, unfounded acusation, blah blah blah –
God will not be mocked and while the Catholic Church is filled with infallible humans (as are all denominations), the God we serve is not. Take your “arguments” to Him. The rest of us are only expected to go and tell – that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life thru Jesus Christ what you do with this good news is up to you. I can face Him knowing I told – the problem is whether you receive – .the choice as to what you do with what I tell you is yours – I can live with it can you?

Mar. 17, 2013 at 12:00pmMusta got your info from the Wiki, the Huff or chacha or answers.yahoo – first page of every gvt supported gooogle search. Yeah, Google is buddies with Obama.
The “church” doesn’t file tax returns, doesn’t divulge their financial records of credit/debts and they are groups of churches geographically independent from each other, i.e. diocese – so exactly where you get your figures from is a miracle in itself.

Mar. 16, 2013 at 12:18amWhy, is this new Pope going to be silent with even larger and more powerful entities of power who are more destructive then the country he came from in the future?
People should ask questions, and he should answer them? Personally, I don’t care, I am not a Chatholic, and I don’t recongize the Pope as any authority over me or my life, what I do care about is how this person might influence the lives of others, and if we can show them ways to deal with those issues, it becomes more powerful to the individuals affected when they stand unaffected inspite of negative energy, rather than worry about the leadership of a Church?

The story hear pretty much looks like the one I saw on Yahoo.
I think you are more determined to try to shift people’s thinking here than anything else.
But please not you negatives are so high that anything you say is taken with extreme skepticism.
You would be more productive if you pi$$ed into the wind with your mouth open. Which is to say that you are not productive at all here converting people.
Have fun! :)
