Is Pope Francis (formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio) a socialist who will allow liberation theology to infiltrate the Catholic Church? This question, when posed, caused Sam Gregg, research director at the Action Institute, a conservative think tank, to chuckle. TheBlaze interviewed Gregg on Friday to speak further about Francis’ take on poverty and social justice.
As over-the-top as the aforementioned curiosity sounds, since the pontiff’s election on Wednesday, some have quietly been voicing concerns. And there’s no doubt that outlets, pundits and political observers, alike, have spent the past week exploring Francis’ background in an effort to better understand where he stands on the economic front.
A LOVER OF LIBERATION THEOLOGY AND SOCIALISM?
So, what’s the verdict?
Well, it’s clear from his past and present statements and behaviors that Pope Francis cares deeply about the poor and that he lives a very humble and — by all accounts — modest life (he cooked his own meals, took public transportation and decided not to live in lavish quarters). But how far does this devotion to the poor go? Is Francis concerned with government structure and taxation or will he stick firmly to the faith and encouraging believers to help those in need?
This quest for context and its associated curiosities, of course, is nothing new. Whenever a new pope is elected, the public and media, alike, look incessantly for any and all information that will shed light on the new-found faith leader’s character and a past actions. And considering that the Catholic Church has 1.2 billion members across the globe, Pope Francis’ viewpoints matter, mostly because of the control and influence he will have over believers.
During a phone interview, Gregg explained Francis’ background and dismissed any claims that the pontiff is a socialist or has connections with liberation theology. As for the latter movement, the researcher explained that this ideology never took off in Argentina as it did in other Latin American countries — and, in fact, he credited Francis for liberation theology’s overall failure in the country.

“His basic line was that, of course, Christians have to be concerned about injustice, but it is not the place of the priest to get involved in politics, generally speaking, let alone revolutionary behavior,” Gregg told TheBlaze. “In terms of his practical action, he purposefully held back his Jesuits [from] getting involved in direct political action and revolutionary activity.”
Francis was also well aware of the Marxist roots of liberation theology and, as Gregg noted, he “recognized that that wasn’t compatible with being a Christian.” Further driving home how important rejecting this ideology was to the pontiff, Gregg said that the stance inevitably hurt him. He contends that it made Francis unpopular with many Jesuits living in Argentina who embraced the controversial thought-process at the time.
The Associated Press has corroborated some of this information in recent reports, writing on Saturday that Francis “never favored liberation theology.” That said, the outlet explained that he spoke out after the economy collapsed in 2001, denouncing capitalism’s excesses and corruption. But, of course, denouncing corruption has nothing to do with embracing liberation theology or socialistic views.
LIVING A HUMBLE LIFE
As far as living a humble life goes, the stories being told about Francis’ personal and frugal decisions are both encouraging and admirable. Gregg believes that these elements actually define his persona and provide “the most powerful symbolic message” about who the new leader truly is.
“I think the most significant thing is asceticism — his asceticism – because we live in socieites that are quite materialistic. People often fall into the trap of seeing significance as how much stuff [we] have,” he explained. “Asceticism doesn’t mean that you reject the mateiral world or believe that people in commerce or trade aren’t good people — it means not letting material things become the cener of your life.”
From a Christian perspective, removing oneself from the material is a viable move if it helps believers orient themselves and their spirituality toward life’s elements that truly matter, Gregg noted.

A general view shows people waiting for pope’s first Angelus prayer at St Peter’s square on March 17, 2013 at the Vatican. Pope Francis begins his papacy in earnest today ahead of his formal inauguration mass, with a weekly prayer address used by previous pontiffs to comment on international affairs. The pope’s first Angelus prayer, delivered from a window high above St Peter’s Square, is a chance for the first Latin American pontiff to begin to sketch out a more global vision for the role of the Roman Catholic Church. THE POPE’S ECONOMIC WORLDVIEW
As for the “socialist” question that led Gregg to laugh, he drew out some important points about how the pope likely views the world. First and foremost, he is a Catholic and, thus, sees the world through that lens. All other labels, of course, fall secondary.
“I would say Francis is not a socialist. He’s also not a capitalist,” Gregg said. “He doesn’t think of himself in those sort of economic terms. He has views reflective of the society in which he live. He’s going to look to Catholic social teaching, to the tradition of the church.”
In a commentary on National Review, Gregg affirmed these details and made some predictions about the future. More notably, he said he doesn’t see Francis getting too embroiled in economic policymaking in the near future:
My suspicion is that Pope Francis is not going to invest enormous intellectual energy in proposing various schemes for economic reform. He will certainly continue to champion the interests of the poor against those who want to maintain the corrupt status quo prevailing throughout many developing nations. There is such a thing as economic justice and the Catholic Church has a definite view of what that looks like. But inferring that the new pope is going to bring Occupy Wall Street to the Vatican takes more than a stretch of the imagination. In fact, it’s a form of Kirchneristic wishful thinking that simply doesn’t do justice to the wisdom and sanctity of the man.
The researcher was also careful to note that concern for the poor is something that should exist beyond the socialist realm.
It is the bounds of this charity, though, that some question. Will Francis merely push for Catholics and other religious individuals to be more charitable and giving at the individual level or will he push for government policies that do the same (or, perhaps, advocate a mixture of the two)?

While Gregg seems to think that there’s a strong change he will avoid structural and systematic issues that create or sustain poverty, not everyone is so sure. At least one expert that The Huffington Post’s Jaweed Kaleen spoke with seemed somewhat more uncertain regarding how Francis will tackle these issues in the coming months and years.
“You can tell that this is a man who is speaking from experience, not in a lecture. His sermons have talked about proximity to the poor,” Michael Lee, a professor of theology at Fordham University, told HuffPo. ”He is fond of quoting from the Latin American bishops who as a group have been strong and vocal against structural poverty and the downsides of globalization in underdeveloped countries in Latin America and Africa.”
It’s certainly understandable why some are asking questions and pondering the pope’s background. But one must consider context when examining these issues — both geographic and personal perspective as a result of experiences. While it is true that poverty is close to Francis’ heart, there’s no indication that he’s a socialist and it’s on record that he combated liberation theology as a result of its Marxist roots.
As far as how he’ll address issues pertaining to poverty and the economy, well, we’ll simply have to wait and see.

Did you even REALLY read the article? Billy H. DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE NEW POPE supporting Marxism, in fact, his conclusion at the end of the paragraphs discussing the possibilities came to the conclusion that POPE FRANCIS was NOT a supporter of Liberation Theology or any other type ideology that supported Maxist-type theories!
The libs/socialists/communist MSM and others got so excited on Wednesday, after they read that our New Pope was a supporter of COMMUNION LIBERATION–like you “Dudley,” they must have only read half or fewer of the words explaining this branch of theology, or they couldn’t understand the “big words”!
COMMUNION LIBERATION is a Theology where one is LIBERATED in God, to be in COMPLETE COMMUNION (and communication with), GOD, JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT, and in shared COMMUNION with other Eucharistic Christians. (Dudley, there are a LOT of big words in this sentence and some of they can be “changed” to mean what you what, but believe me, I and other TRUE Catholics understand what I am saying here (and I was raised a strong believing and active Evangelical Protestant until coming in to the Fullness of Truth that is the Church that Jesus Himself founded, now called the Church with our new “papa” on Earth, Francis, who emulates our Papa (“Abba” in Hebrew) God, Himself.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 12:17pmWhile Obama expects us to “spread the wealth” & clearly has distain towards the “rich”, while boo-hooing over the “poor”, this Pope has walked his talk. Joe Biden and Nancy Smellosi are Catholic and are pro-abortion. (Biden says that he follows his faith in his “private life”) Both of them have been added to the official U.S. delegation to attend the installation of newly-elected Pope Francis. Quick sidebar. obama doesn’t hate the rich. If that were true, he’d have to hate himself. Clearly, obama doesn’t hate himself clearly he is quite in love with himself.
Like all communist past and present, obama hates people who are wealthy through any mechanism other than redistribution. So if you get wealthy by way of capitalism, that is bad-wealthy. If you get wealthy by acquiring wealth through redistributive systems, that is good-wealth.
I have yet to learn about any communist leader that doesn’t enjoy the luxurious benefits that communist political connections afford. While communists preach modesty, the politically connected communists have always bathed themselves in every luxury imaginable.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 11:59amHistory shows quite clearly that whenever a government claims to be “helping the poor”, they are always just using the poor to build their own power. The only way to truely help the poor is for people to make a personal commitment to do so. Instead, the greedy simply want to take “other peoples’ money rather than their own. Proof of this can be seen by looking at the charity donations of conservatives vs liberals. While there are exception, overall, conservatives give multiple times the amounts given by liberals.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 3:40pmMax jones the oath makes good propaganda value for the max jones of their time.
Let me explain
It was an ill-fated conspiracy with disastrous consequences. On November 5, 1605, a small group of fanatic Catholics in England planned to blow up the House of Parliament, killing the assembled leadership and assassinating King James I. When it had become clear that King James was not to grant Catholics any relief from the persecution of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth I, the plot was hatched among a few desperate men. From a rented building the conspirators dug a trench to a cellar beneath Parliament. The room was filled with barrels of gunpowder. One of the conspirators, Guy Fawkes, was to set off the charge. But the conspiracy was discovered, Fawkes arrested, and a roundup began of possible conspirators. Among those captured were a small cadre of Catholic priests. They had nothing to do with the conspiracy. But the government was less interested in the facts, more interested in the propaganda value.

That is the problem with the Progressive’s interpretation of the Bible…they push Jesus’ teachings onto the collective instead of the individual.
It is also the difference between a moderate Muslim and a radical Muslim.
A moderate Muslim grants women rights to do anything except for those things specifically forbidden in the Koran…a radical Muslim grants women the right to only do those things specifically allowed by the Koran.
Liberation Theology is a misinterpretation of scripture, so isn’t radical Islam.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 5:58pmI love how when I point out something accurate in the context of the Bible that I’m instantly a liberal Obama supporter. Far from the truth, I’m pointing out that the context of the Bible neither approves or disapproves of government help of the poor, which means prudential judgement is needed in government help for the poor.
The government doesn’t help the poor you say? Welfare programs that give incentive to get off of it and get a job help. Better economic freedom helps. Lower tax rates help. Liberating them from a dictator helps.
How does the government hurt the poor? Well raising taxes on cigarettes hurt the poor, since they smoke more. As with sales tax hikes.
My point is PRUDENCE.
Is it really that hard to critically think? How about not make assumptions? Or actually read what I wrote?

Mar. 17, 2013 at 11:19amSorry, but the Catholic Church is filled with socialists who believe in the redistribution of wealth and social justice. Leaders in the church have come out with calls for the UN to regulate banks. They have publicly renounced capitalism. I find it very hard to believe that they would choose a new Pope that did not share in their views. I can understand the Pope wanting to rid the world of corruption. The politicians and bankers are the single most corrupt group out there. However, I think the church should focus within and rid themselves of this very problem first.
The entire structure of the Catholic church is socialistic. The church is a recognized State. Many priests and leaders take an oath of poverty. They receive small salaries and the “State” takes care of the rest of their needs. The money that comes into the church is distributed by the State based upon the objectives of the State. Why is it such a surprise that the Catholic Church is socialistic? This is why I no longer give to the Church, I give directly of my time and money to the poor and disadvantaged as well as local organizations that keep the money in my community.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 11:36amTRILO “Sorry, but the Catholic Church is filled with socialists” Who is he kidding?
Catholics are constantly confronted with the claims that Pope Pius XII was complicit in the Holocaust, that vast numbers of Catholics collaborated with Hitler’s diabolical regime, and that Catholic priests, nuns, and bishops were ardent members of the Nazi Party and supporters of its policies. It is true that many Catholics turned a blind eye to the Holocaust, and others remained silent out of fear for their lives and the safety of their families. There were certainly many ex-Catholic members of the ruling Nazi circles, just as there were Catholics in some numbers who supported the Nazis out of a twisted sense of nationalism, anti-Semitic beliefs, or for pure personal advancement in a corrupt and evil state.
But what many people don’t know is that the Church itself was a target of the Nazis. On June 6, 1941, Martin Bormann, head of the Nazi Party Chancellery, private secretary to Adolf Hitler, and one of the most powerful figures in the Third Reich, issued a secret decree for all Gauleiters (or regional party leaders) of the Reich regarding the true intentions of the Nazi regime toward the Christian churches.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 11:43amTRILO Contary to catholic doctriane…
The doctrine of modern socialism, which is often concealed under the most seductive trappings, is in substance based on the principles of dialectical and historical materialism previously advocated by Marx, of which the theoricians of bolshevism claim to possess the only genuine interpretation. According to this doctrine there is in the world only one reality, matter, the blind forces of which evolve into plant, animal and man. Even human society is nothing but a phenomenon and form of matter, evolving in the same way. By a law of inexorable necessity and through a perpetual conflict of forces, matter moves towards the final synthesis of a classless society. In such a doctrine, as is evident, there is no room for the idea of God; there is no difference between matter and spirit, between soul and body; there is neither survival of the soul after death nor any hope in a future life. Insisting on the dialectical aspect of their materialism, the Communists claim that the conflict which carries the world towards its final synthesis can be accelerated by man. Hence they endeavor to sharpen the antagonisms which arise between the various classes of society. Thus the class struggle with its consequent violent hate and destruction takes on the aspects of a crusade for the progress of humanity. On the other hand, all other forces whatever, as long as they resist such systematic violence, must be annihilated as hostile to the human race.

Sort of taught us what to expect from the radicals who now control the Democrat Party and the MSM. Now they have widened their targeting and smearing ! All conservatives get blasted. The Communists and the Nazis all hated the Church because she would not follow their Big Brother atheistic governments. They both slaughtered a slew of the clergy during their reigns. And the comments of our Obama Trolls show that that hatred for religions is still a major part of their arrogant, bullying , nastiness .

Mar. 17, 2013 at 11:47amTrilo,
The structure of the church is based NOT on socialism, which is centralized power. The RCC is based on “subsidiarity,” which spreads the real power out to to the lowest part of the hierarchy.
In other words, the money is given to people on the ground level, like missionary priests and nuns, and charities like Mother Teresa’s, or any number of thousands of charities the Church sponsors.
Subsidiarity is localized aid, comfort, and care.
And, the fact that religious orders of priests and nuns take a vow of poverty means they voluntarily avoid material acquisition in order to ensure that they stay focused on their vocations. They can serve Christ better when detached from material possessions and the need to make a lot of money ……..and here it comes, folks…. to support a family.
Get it?

If the Catholics cared about the poor as much as they talk about it there would be no poor and they would have to sell their house to help. The tares among the wheat look easy to pull but you ruin the wheat at the pulling. Their talk is cheap. I used to listen but know I know. So many religious people step over widows and orphans to go on a mission vacation to a foreign country and justify it constantly.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 12:38pmYou are sadly wrong about the Church’s position on such issues. The Catholic Church has made its position VERY clear on socialism/communism in DIVINI REDEMPTORI. I quote…
“The doctrine of modern Communism, which is often concealed under the most seductive trappings…strips man of his liberty, robs human personality of all its dignity, and removes all the moral restraints that check the eruptions of blind impulse…It is a system full of errors and sophisms. It is in opposition both to reason and to Divine Revelation. It subverts the social order, because it means the destruction of its foundations; because it ignores the true origin and purpose of the State; because it denies the rights, dignity and liberty of human personality.” http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius11/P11DIVIN.HTM
If the pope had celebrated in opulence, he would have been criticized…now that he has called for protection of the truly poor and lives a quieter lifestyle, he is STILL criticized. Please reflect on the “stones’ you cast. Being more considerate of our brothers and sisters who need us is surely a message all people can understand. And, yes, this CAN be done without socialism or communism!

Mar. 17, 2013 at 11:34amIs Bohner a Catholic? House Speaker John Boehner says he “absolutely” trusts President Barack Obama — not that they don’t have their differences.
Boehner tells ABC’s “This Week” that the two have a good relationship and that they’re “open with each other … honest with each other.” But the Ohio lawmaker says they’re trying to bridge some big differences.
One issue they agree on: The U.S. doesn’t have an immediate crisis in terms of debt.
Some conservatives criticized Obama when he said last week that the country doesn’t have an immediate debt crisis.
Boehner says a debt crisis does loom in the years ahead because entitlement programs are not sustainable if they aren’t changed.
He says balancing the budget will help the economy. Every pope since WW2 has been a socialist. And many before that.

Jesuits have the latitude to develop their own opinions on this subject. They aren’t bound to any one philosophy regarding treatment of the poor- other than an obligation to help them. Because it happens so frequently nowadays. Sadly, we are already well beyond “1984″ newspeech.
As for Pope himself, reasons for worry are real. Jesuit order has history of Machiavellian works, liberation theology is well rooted in South America. However, history shows many good strong leaders emerging from such hard conditions, because to achieve they need to develop a very strong spine and survive crushing… Give him a benefit of the doubt and his actions will speak for him.

Initially, the lib media has been wary of the new Pope…..but just wait for a short time. They’ll realize that they can make use of this new Pope to further their statist agenda and you’ll see and hear it in their sudden appreciation for religion.
It’s all a facade of course. The Vatican, much like Washington DC, has been infiltrated with Marxists.
I’m very skeptical and cynical about the sincerity of this new Pope.

I suspect that when the Pope fails to ok gay marriage, abortion, birth control, and female priests ( I think that may be possible – but even the Penitentes were males ) , the MSM and many will turn on him like they do on all conservatives . The Left only marches to the tune of their own agenda which is basically atheistic and antagonistic and totally in control of the MSM.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 5:51pmBGREEN….I liked that post, because you have caught the intent…..We will continue to be torn apart by misunderstanding and selfish pride. Like what is between you and I….I believe that when Christ breathed his last human breath on this earth and said,”It is finished.” The veil cloaking the “holy of holies” was rent from top to bottom, signifying the end of the priesthood…forever and ever. We no longer needed intermediaries to approach YHVH, for Christ became our redeemer, the intermediary to end all intermediaries. The RCC can’t accept that interpretation, for that would be the end of the priesthood completely and permanently.
In my world, your clergy lies to catholics to retain power and employment. Over the centuries it has gotten even more devious…. exalting mortal men over the precepts of Christ and abrogating Laws like allowing graven images in the place of worship, and praying to man made saints and changing the Sabbath from the 7th day to the first day of the week. The selling of “indulgences” as recently as 1999.I could go on and on but I’m pretty sure you stopped reading when you realized I have scripture on my side of the issue, and control of facts.

You only have scripture according yo your fallible interpretation. However the bible teaches is to go to the church not scripture for the truth. As follows, In 1 Timothy 3:15 hmm it reads the pillar and ground of the truth.” is what the Bible? NOPE. ” But if I tarry long, that you may know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” So the Bible says, the word of God says it’s the Church not scripture. Therefore, the final authority is God’s Church. So the Church founded by Jesus Christ is an singular visible authoritative church. Think about this, for the Bible to have authority the Church has to have authority. How do we know the Bible has no errors? How do we know which books are suppose to be in the Bible? Because the church tell us so. Since the Bible does not have a list to tell us which books belong in the Bible we need to rely on a source outside of the Bible.
For more evidence on authority let’s see Matthew 18:17″ But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto you as a heathen man and a tax collector. Note what this passage does not say it does not say to consult scripture again it says to consult the Church.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 9:53amIf indeed HE himself is living a modest, humble life, then he’s not a socialist. Look at the socialist leaders, who are sitting on fat street, while their underlings and the common people starve. I think it’s a noble thing to live humbly not having massive amounts of servants, and then using what money you have to help the poor. The church is supposed to help the poor, not the government with the tax payers money. If Obama wanted to help, he should spend some of his own millions (plural) instead of redistributing other people’s money.

In socialist states, people are forced to do with less, it is not voluntary. Rarely has the ruling class ever had to do with less themselves.
For example, Al Gore says to save the planet, we all must do with less. We need to lower our standard of living and take public transport (even though the majority of Americans have no access to it), wash our clothes and selves less, live in smaller, more centrally located housing. Meanwhile, Al Gore himself owns multiple, very not-green mansions powered by coal.

Mar. 17, 2013 at 5:52pm@Max Jones I was a protestant, a devout protestant. I believed all the propaganda that the Church was pagan and the antichrist, then I actually learned the truth about it.
Justification by Faith and Works is not works salvation, as Grace comes by God’s love alone. If Justification by Faith and Works is works salvation then so is Sola Fide, because under that doctrine there are people who are damned for not having faith. “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” James 2:24. We are given faith by God and if we abide in him and in that faith we will do good works. This justifies us to the grace of God which comes by his love alone.
We do not pray to saints for help, saints cannot help us directly. They can pray for us, just as the angels and elders in Revelation offered up the prayers of the saints to God “And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.” Revelation 8:3-4

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” Matt 16:18-19.
The idea that Petros is a stone and Petra is the rock is absurd, as that would be the only place in the Greek language for the word petros to be used that way. The Koine Greek word used for stone in Revelation 21:11 is Lethos, not Petros. The fact of the matter is that Christ could not call Peter Petra because Peter is a male, and so Petra had to be converted to Petros to have the correct ending. In John 1:42 rather than using the Greek translation st. John uses the original Aramaic which Christ actually spoke, and says that Christ called Peter Kephas, the same word used for the rock upon which the Church would be built. This is because Aramaic, like English, had neuter endings.

Far better than when governments try to be Santa Claus by “redistributing ” ( stealing ? ) money from person A and giving it to person B by mandate, not by choice. It is the lack of a moral compass which makes governments poor vehicles for making these choices . Also the rights of the individual to exercise free will gets trampled on by Big Brother governments. One would expect the Pope to care for the poor. Barack Obama has merely stolen the ” rich do not pay their fair share ” to garner votes and power for his Party . The Democrat Party is no religion. Pre-Conquest England. I was reading a book called “The Warrior’s Way”.
“The King introduced his code with an exposition of how the laws of Moses were subsequently adapted from their Jewish application so as to be suitable for Christian men, and how various councils of wise and holy men had since worked hard to incorporate the basic principles of Christian faith into a system of legal instruction” p173 “The Warrior’s Way”
Feuds are from the Early Medieval Era. I don’t know if they existed pre-Migration era. I think those were just out & out tribal wars. Feuding existed well after signing of the declaration of independence.
My interest is part historical. But I also read somewhere else was that you either had clan law or the king’s law but not both. That is either the government is in control or it is not. If the government does not provide protection it loses the mandate to rule. If the government does not stop violence in the street then gangs engage in vendettas. They can be said to be new clans. It is just a law of nature. I don’t care what the insipid fools in D.C. say. Either they provide real justice or they become irrelevant like French police in a Muslim neighborhood in France.
