Craziest Hockey Goal You’ve Seen? Puck Literally Splits in Half During Shot: Should the Score Count?

This could be one of the craziest hockey plays you’ve ever seen.

During a swiss National League A playoff game in Saturday, Cedric Botter of Fribourg-Gottéron launched the puck toward the EHC Biel goal. It went in. Kinda. Video of the show shows that the puck hit the post and split in half. One part of the puck did, in fact, go in the net, but the other part deflected and was knocked away.

Watch it below:

But the burning question is: Did it count? According to Yahoo, it did not. Referees initially called it a goal, but after viewing replay called it off.

But should they have? Weigh in below.

First off… its a goal, not a score…. sorry BLAZE (I love you).

Secondly – happened to me too – no goal (I was mad, flabbergasted, and impressed with myself.. though it hit the post when it cracked

Thirdly – the entire puck needs to cross the line, not a piece or a part.. the ENTIRE puck.

Didn’t watch the video.. if both pieces went in its a good goal.. if not sorry dude – mine didn’t count either. Too much going on in this world to give 2 poops about some hockey game other my BRUINS! But before that the USA and world events are numero uno!

    GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Obviously this player is on some type of banned substance to hit a puck this hard. Lets get to the bottom of this serious crisis. Congress should immediately stop all the work they are doing to save America and bring this hockey player in for immediate questioning by their highly intelligent members.
God save the sport of hockey forever; before it is too late.

weight the two pieces of the puck, if the piece that went into the goals post weighs more it is a goal, if it weighs less than the other piece not goal.

When I played Hockey the rule was, if any part of the puck went across the goal line it counted as a goal.

So, in my opinion. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!

The score counts. Any part of the puck that crosses the line, even if it is not the whole puck, still counts as a score. If the very tip of a puck crosses the edge of the goal line, even if the entire puck does not, nor if the puck is knocked back out, nor enters the netted area, the goal is counted. If half a puck breaches the line, it’s a goal. It is the same in football. If the tip of the ball crosses the edge of the goal line, the score is counted if the player is not down. The only difference is in hockey the player does not have to physically possess the puck. It can be swatted (or shot) in.

Completely wrong. It doesn’t work like football. The ENTIRE puck must be COMPLETELY across the goal line for a goal to count. Since this puck split in two and half of it didn’t come anywhere near the goal line it’s an easy no goal call.

Simple. The entire puck did not cross the line. Assuming the rules are the same there as here, no goal. Fin.

the rules is any part of the puck any means any crosses the line any. if only a 1/8 of a inch of the puck crosses the line it’s a point about 1/3 of it crossed the line that makes it a point.

Actually the rule ia that the entire puck has to cross the line. So no goal :(

That is not the rule. The rule is the entire puck has to be completely across the goal line.

Stop trying to make up your own facts. You’re dangerously close to employing wingnut liberal debating tactics.

This obviously isn’t the NHL, but according to the Wikipedia page on NHL rules (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League_rules#Scoring_and_winning), “A goal is scored when the puck completely crosses the goal line and enters the net.”

The rule is the entire puck must fully cross the red line, in this case it did not, so no goal.

Based on the rules, its not a goal because the whole puck must be over the line to be considered a goal.

Maybe they should add a new rule “if the biggest remaining piece of the puck goes in the net, its a goal” :)

I’m not sure about the Swiss league but in all the American leagues the puck must enter the net and completely cross the goal line to count as a goal. If half of the puck did not completely cross the goal line, then it can’t be a legitimate goal. Simple.

I would say if we strictly followed the rules, which say a score is made if any part of the puck crosses the line, then it’s a score.

Not sure. Not scoring the goal would hurt the self esteem of the shooter. Scoring the goal would hurt the self esteem of the Goalie.

How about we just stop scoring all of the goals and give everyone a trophy?
