Last week, TheBlaze brought you the story of a German family who immigrated to the U.S. seeking political asylum in order to homeschool their children — something unlawful in their native country — but who may soon be deported by the Department of Homeland Security. On Monday morning, Glenn Beck characterized the story as “nothing more un-American than this” in an interview with the family’s lawyer while also vowing to give $50k to the defense.
(Related: Is Homeschooling a Universal Human Right?)
Uwe and Hannelore Romeike, along with their six children, wanted to homeschool their children in their native country, but were not permitted to do so under German law. The Evangelical family sought and were granted political refuge in the U.S. by an immigration judge in 2010, but now the Department of Homeland Security is claiming that German laws banning homeschooling do not violate the family’s human rights. TheBlaze’s previous article explains:
U.S. Immigration Judge Lawrence Burman, who granted the Romeike’s asylum, said that “the (German) government is attempting to enforce this Nazi-era law against people that it purely seems to detest because of their desire to keep their children out of school.”
According to the Associated Press, however, the Board of Immigration Appeals found Burman’s assertion to be erroneous, adding that the actual record did not support “inflammatory suggestion that it is a Nazi-era law.”
The Romeike’s appeal to the 6th Circuit will hear oral arguments April 23.
“The Obama administration is basically saying there is no right to home school anywhere,” Michael Farris, founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association (which is representing the Romeike family) said in a previous interview. “It’s an utter repudiation of parental liberty and religious liberty.”
“They are trying to send a family back to Germany where they would certainly lose custody of their children,” Farris said. “Our government is siding with Germany.”
On his Monday morning radio broadcast, Glenn Beck noted that the Romeike’s story greatly mirrored that of the earliest American settlers.
“They [Romeikes] did it the right way,” said Beck.
“They had their visas. They came here and asked for political asylum. Because if they return to Germany the state will take their children unless they dump them into the system that [goes against their Evangelical values].”
Beck said that the idea of deporting the Romeikes flies in the face of everything that the U.S. stands for.
“There is nothing more un-American than this.”
He added that every American, not just those who homeschool, should “pay attention to this case.”
Farris spoke to Beck on Monday morning to explain the Romeike’s case in greater detail, saying that the family is, “right down the center, Evangelical Christians” much like historian David Barton and scores of other Americans. Farris also said it is “baffling” as to why the administration seems so bent on the Romeike case given that the initial immigration judge ruled in the family’s favor.
If the administration wins this battle, Beck asked if it would be setting a precedent that can be “used against the American people” in other human rights cases.
“Not only are parental rights not valid [to the administration]…nor is religious freedom on an individual basis,” Farris said. “They just struck individual liberty out of the equation…they are setting a precedent that is dangerous.”
Beck expressed his thanks to Farris for taking on this case that he believes represents a struggle for the individual rights of all Americans. To this end, Beck noted that Mercury One, his charitable organization, will be donating $50,000 to the Romeike’s defense fund. Beck donated to the cause and encouraged listeners to join, saying a special section will be set up on the charity’s web page for those interested in supporting the family.
“If you believe in individual freedom. This is one of the many steps they [administration] are taking to take away your rights and parent your child…this is an extraordinarily important case.”
Those interested in home-schooling or in learning more about the Romeike family can visit the HSLDA for more information.

This is the problem with the Conservative message. This is why the GOP loses the Hispanic vote. As long as the illegals are white from Canada or France, you people don’t give a crap. But if they look brown or black, call in ICE and round up the f***ers!

Mar. 18, 2013 at 1:48pmZorro,
The real issue is why the department of Homeland Security does not feel that an issue that will cause a family’s children to be taken from them does not warrant protection as an issue of asylum. It is all the more pointed that the Department is granting de facto asylum to millions of people (by not deporting them) who are not here legally and did not even request asylum. The hypocrisy is nauseating.

Mar. 18, 2013 at 2:12pmHow is it illegal to come to the US with a Visa?
How is illegal applying for refugee status, while possessing a visa?
How is it illegal staying in the country while all LEGAL avenues like the courts from start to finish, including appeals, are pursued?
When all avenues lead to the denial of refugee status and this family then goes underground that is the first time they would have done something illegal.
So please, all you ignorants, read carefully and try to understand the info you take in.

Fellas, how can you read this kind of nonsense without feeling like your intelligence is being insulted (which it is by the way). “The Obama administration is basically saying there is no right to home school anywhere,…” That is a bald faced lie. It’s legal to home school in this country as you know. How can you read that and not feel like you’re being jerked around by someone who assumes you are an idiot?
The issue, as the article says, is that this family’s case was reviewed and a decision was made that Germany’s insistence on public schooling (which can be either a public school, private school or religious school in Germany) was not a “human rights violation.” The issue has nothing to do with home schooling in the US. If you were “watching the other hand” you would not be fooled by this. And you’d realize that you’re calling Germany a human right violator, which would mean that any German can come to the US and live.
In any case I’m more sympathetic to a Mexican crossing the border looking for work because his kids are starving.

In China, your child not only gets sent to the government schools, but millions of babies are aborted because of their one child quotas ( now changing slightly because the guys have no girls to marry). Mar. 19, 2013 at 1:46pmSchools– public or private– need your sons and daughters to make the socio-economic money machine run. It’s not just about controlling course content. It’s an accepted socialist microcosm which dictates where/how/with whom your child will spend precious formative hours, days,… YEARS of their lives. (For that matter, and to a great extent, school systems also dictate how parents must organize their own schedules and finances….)
Now, governments simply cannot allow people to pull their children out of this neatly organized socialist universe just because they have realized they would rather structure their lives another way, and they have figured out that can cover Math, Science, Reading, Writing etc. in half the time their kid spends at school. Now they have a ton of time left over for sports, music, the arts….
Of course this is a human rights issue.
Gotta love those Germans though… If educated parents can’t be trusted to supervise a good homeschool program– their school system obviously isn’t working.

There is nothing more precious for a parent than their children and all will answer to God for how they were raised. People home school to honor that commitment and raise their children in the way they believe God commands them, as well to bring decent people into society. Public school destroys them and in Germany this is especially true, raising them as brainwashed Godless sociopaths. This latest generation from their public schools is part of an increasing number who are again raising the specter of a 21st century version of a new Hitler with all the future hell that guarantees. Their greatest responsibility is to raise their children right and German schools do the diametrical opposite. So do public schools here. There can be no doubt it is religious persecution in Germany just as it is here by the type of mindsets being created by these public schools. From reading your words on endless mindless posts on the Blaze, no doubt you are a prime example of what these parents are desperately trying to avoid, i.e., spewing upon society yet another version of you ‘verse of insanity not reason’. I’ve been following the Romeike’s story, as well as others, and it shows an unsettling disregard for parents and individual rights. Capitulating to appease Germany’s embarrassment at having their own citizens seek asylum only reinforces the idea that Government is more important than the individual.
Several countries in Europe have examples of people being persecuted for homeschooling; Google Dominic Johansson for a tear-jerker. We all know there are horrible people out there who do unspeakable things to their own children, but that should not be proof that all parents need to be overseen by the state. Government will NEVER care more for a child than even a mediocre parent, nor is school the best place to “train up a child.”

Mar. 18, 2013 at 10:49amJust playing devils advocate CAV! “No offense Barack”! We need to find a way to allow this family to stay without classifying it as political asylum! We may not like the unintended consequences of allowing the world to flock to the US to avoid a countries law that they do not like, or simply do not agree with. I’m betting laws around the world such as this one are far, far too many to count!

Mar. 18, 2013 at 10:50amDONATE! DONATE! DONATE! I JUST DID!!! Anything you can afford. Let’s send a message to the leftist liberals running Washington that the American people WILL NOT allow our rights or the rights of anyone wishing political or religious asylun in America to be treated this way.
This administration’s response to this case along with the government’s response to home schooling in general (Including many individual states) is not only disgraceful but unconstitutional.
It’s OK for rich liberals th have their children indoctrinated in socialist, communist principles in exclusive private schools BUT parents wishing to teach their children Christian and Constitutional principles should be legislated against. DISGUSTING!!!

In what way is stealing your children away to be indoctrinated by the State, by force, not a human rights violation?

Mar. 18, 2013 at 12:11pmYou’re right about the hypocrisy, Encicom. But there is no insane fringe against public education. Look at the numbers. Public schools are failing our children despite the insane amounts of money we’re spending. The reasons don’t matter. It’s happening. The state is more concerned with handing out condoms than they are about teaching math.

Mar. 18, 2013 at 1:27pmso, Encinoman, if you don’t think that the public school system is “evil” (yes, a harsh description) can we assume you think there is no moral label to it all? In other words, it is neutral, neither “good” or “evil”?
If that is the case, would it not be logical to have no objection for a family to choose an alternative system of providing an education for their children, assuming, of course, that that option is also neither “good” nor “evil”?

They going to roll out that red magic political carpet when you show up to get on the air plane, they going to stick the back of their hand down your wife’s pants, take naked pictures of your kids, and then dare you say something stupid while you go through this process?
The Russians and the Mexicans have no problems telling people they don’t like to turn around at the border, but if you the natural born enemy of Republican Christians and the US Constitution, come here boy, get in the limo?

Mar. 18, 2013 at 12:27pmTo Encicom :
Didn’t you read the article? They ARE legal, the judge said so. It is perfectly allowed to hold thoughts not shared by all your neighbors, and to pass on your thoughts/beliefs to your children. When the STATE demands that everyone be taught the same thing, it is an infringement on this right. State control of what people are allowed to learn/know is devastatingly wrong. When the government does not allow parents to teach their own children, it is a warning of worse to come.
Responding to legitimate fears of terrorism, the government has set up the infrastructure of a police state. What remains to be seen is who will rule it and to what ends. Don’t say it could never happen here, and look honestly at what has already happened. Then look at human history for the past few thousand years. A couple of centuries of freedom is an anomaly. If we want to stay free we must defend freedom in every generation. If the light of freedom is allowed to go out in America, where will you run to?
Where in the constitution does it give the federal government the right to control what your child learns? Is it insane to say public education is not the only way to learn? Is it insane to say that people should be free to choose? Freedom means free to choose. The evil is in taking away freedom.

Mar. 18, 2013 at 12:53pm@1freevoice, this has nothing to do with our constitution, they are a family of illegal aliens from Germany. They can freely move to other EU nations that allow home schooling, instead they decided to jump the border and become illegal aliens in the US. The judge was wrong and needs to be replaced if he thinks public education equates with nazis.

I could understand the need to seek political asylum back in 2010 being the more pressing issue; but it’s been three years since then. Couldn’t they have applied during that time? 14 What profit is it, my brethren, for a man to say he hath faith, and hath not works? can faith save him?
15 Yea, a man may say, I will show thee I have faith without works; but I say, Show me thy faith without works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
16 For if a brother or sister be naked and destitute, and one of you say, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; notwithstanding he give not those things which are needful to the body; what profit is your faith unto such?
17 Even so faith, if it have not works is dead, being alone.
18 Therefore wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead and cannot save you?

The seizures in Cyprus may even lead to war. It was Germany and the IMF that is pushing for their seizures. And many Russians have put money in Cyprus banks. They Russian government is even now sending a fleet of Russian warships to Cyprus over this.
