‘Bullied’ By Atheists? Former SNL Star Takes Heat for Saying He Believes in God, Scriptures

Comedian Norm Macdonald found himself in atheists’ cross-hairs on Monday night after he sent a series of tweets affirming his belief in God and scripture. Non-believers, clearly appalled that he joins the majority in embracing the notion of a higher power, quickly responded to his religiosity with angst and annoyance.

Macdonald, who was once a cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” inevitably deleted the exchanges he had on Twitter, but not before Twitchy documented some of the back-and-forth.

The situation began when on Sunday when the comedian responded to a tweet about the PGA and bible scripture.

“Is the PGA tour becoming the bible club of pro sports norm? Cuz this guy just said on Nat. TV he read scriptures today! Wtf?,” wrote Twitter user sypher1960.

Macdonald responded, “What’s surprising about that? Don’t most people study the scriptures?” and later added, “I think most people study the scriptures. Most people seem smart to me.”

Some atheists, non-believers — and others who rejected these words — responded. Here’s a sampling of a few of the tweets that Macdonald received (caution: language).

Aww man @ Streelman is one of those, God, scripture, and peace pussies... Wife was a sexy but that shit ain't cool..#itsabook !

As for the latter message, Macdonald responded, writing, “That’s about as stupid a comment as I’ve ever heard.” But at least one other critic of religion got in on the mix, writing, “Religion has also caused more human deaths than any one thing ever.”

Macdonald was less-than-persuaded, responding that heart disease is naturally a bigger killer.

“You cannot be that stupid. It is impossible,” the comedian added. “Must be joking.”

Inevitably, Macdonald ended up removing the posts (perhaps to end the debate that came to fruition). Big Hollywood said that the comedian was “bullied into silence for being religious,” although we can’t be quite sure why he removed the messages (or even if he feels the need to be silent).

Regardless, there are still some tweets in his feed from this month that do, indeed, mention religious themes. In fact, he wrote a message about Pope Francis on March 13 and again on the 16th:

God Bless Pope Francis

Despite detractors, in the end, the comedian also had his share of supporters. As always, it’s interesting — and disheartening — to see someone take heat simply for saying he or she is religious.

But, as a public figure, Macdonald’s stance gives him more attention and influence than the average citizen — something non-believers likely lament.

What people don’t understand is that so many are claiming to be Athiest but are actually not. They are persecuting religion. An Athiest simply says that he or she does not know if there is a God and are uninterested in perusing that knowledge. But a persecuter will attack and demonize people for the color of their skin, their religion in this case, or their belief system. They use the title Athiest to hide behind so that they don’t have to show their real cause and that is to persecute anyone who does not believe as they believe. They follow a set of rules created by the left. It is good to persecute Christians but politically incorrect to persecute Muslims. They are cowards and there is nothing more to say about these individuals hiding behind the title of an Athiest.

Minor correction: an atheist denies God’s existence, whereas an agnostic questions (leaving open the possibility). It’s an important distinction.

Need to step back and realize —

A vocal atheist is an atheist who KNOWS he is preaching a lie.

      * Christians have a REASON to preach: to save OTHERS.
      * Atheists have no such reason; if they are right, and we are all simply worm food after death, then there exists ZERO benefit to anyone to believe anything. So, ‘converting’ another from Christianity to atheism benefits them not a bit – they lost their comfort (not a benefit), and in the end wind up worm food anyway (not a benefit). The ONLY reason an atheist preaches is because he is so insecure and is compelled to seek support from others.

So when you hear these obnoxious, loud atheists cry the sight of a cross makes them quiver, realize they are tormented, insecure beings who KNOW they are headed over a cliff but simply are too afraid to stop running forward.

The so called “cult of atheism” is nothing new but can be traced back to a guy named Nimrod, who is mentioned in Genesis 10. (look him up in a search engine). He is said to have been “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” A study of him is that he was a hunter of men’s hearts in order to turn them against Jehovah. His system of government, society, banking and religion were all assembled in a place called Babylon. This system pervades the whole world to this day. Atheism is merely one method being used by this “system” to turn people away from the true God. Apart from the atheist being a little nimrod, pity these poor saps because they are only pawns in a battle that has been going on since man built the first city.

I understand the distinction you are making between atheists and agnostics, but Kev is right. The vast majority of atheists are lying to themselves to avoid the truth. For someone to deny the God of the bible makes some sense. For someone to say they themselves are all-knowing and deny the possibility that God exists makes no sense at all. They can’t prove God doesn’t exist anymore than a believer can prove the Creator is the God of the bible.

I say this as a bible believing Christian, btw. Creation is all the evidence needed and all will be judged accordingly.

I found it interesting that the media who claims all these atheists had to report some investing numbers.

      Since 2000
The number of Catholics have grown by 15 percent
      Number of Mormons have grown
Four square church Christians have grown
      Evangelical Christian numbers are up
World wide, the number of believers are up close to 600 million
      Buddhist are up
      Hindus are holding

So what is the liberal leaders of the Republican Party up to now.

Screwing things up. They do not understand these numbers.

Here is an interesting one. The marriage amendment in California passed with greater than 80 percent of the lack vote and 70 percent of the Latino vote.

If you are familiar with politics, that is incredible. That is a fertile ground for change.

So the Republican Party wants to go gay.,……tards

Atheism is a religion. It is the belief there is no divine presence in existence, in any form. It has it’s missionaries, prophets, acolytes and churches. They aren’t named the same but they are clearly demonstrable.

Agnosticism is not a religion. It is the assertion that there may or may not be a divine presence in existence. Agnostics will claim they will believe there is a divine presence when it is proven to exist.

Apathy is a state of not caring about it one way or the other.

Science is a method of attempting to obtain fact, see the Scientific Method.

A Scientist is someone that uses the Scientific Method to attempt to obtain facts.

Since the presence of a divine entity(s) cannot be proven or disproven at this point, no factual conclusion can be drawn, so anyone that claims to be a Scientist must also declare that any ‘conclusion’ of divinity they have is based on ‘faith’, either for or against divinity.

Bizarre as it sounds, that proves that even Atheists are practitioners of faith.

I agree with you that religion has no place in making policy, nor should it serve as a viable alternative to interpreting measurable phenomenon, e.g., science. However, the way you talked about an “imaginary savior” is disrespectful, and suffers from the same type of over-reach that you are protesting. Certainly you can’t say with 100% certainty whether or not Jesus is/was a savior (especially for someone else). Rejecting religion, but then also failing to remain open minded seems like a huge waste of time, and also pretty hypocritical.

Let me tell you that what Norm is going through is every day stuff for comedians. I went through it all the time until I left the clubs and started working only in Christian venues. Green rooms were filled with caustic comments made by elitist leftist comedians shocked that I read the bible. I was asked on more than one occasion if I knew what was in that book…amazing. THEY don’t know what the bible says but are quick to pull scripture out of context and tell others how terrible and hateful Christianity is. That’s show business. Robin Williams once said to me after a good set in Marin county, “They really liked your bible football bit because they don’t think that you really believe in all that s***” I said, yeah, well I do. That was the last he had to say to me. If you are planning on a career in comedy or acting, get ready for this kind of attitude to be the norm.

What I have a hard time understanding is the people who have complete, burning loathing towards anyone with faith in a higher power. It simply baffles me. Don’t believe? That’s fine. True. I’ve never met an atheist who didn’t believe in God. they claimed not to, but they hated God. You cannot hate that which you don’t believe in. That hate had reached the point of a visceral reaction whenever Christ was mentioned or they saw a church. The hate normally is for one of two reasons:
      1. Because they enjoy doing something they know is wrong, and their conscience is driving them nuts, and 2. Because they have been badly hurt by someone in a church.

Because atheists do believe in God, the term “nontheist” is probably better for those who genuinely don’t believe in God and thus don’t care one way or another.

If one counts the religions of Socialism and Islam, which with some estimated 250+ million and 60+ million casualties respectively from war, murder, famine, etc. have the highest casualties of all religions (possibly the Thugs over the centuries, but the number is unknown), it’s still less than the major human diseases like cancer or heart disease.

I’m not into mysticism. So I deem all religion utter nonsense. And I don’t accept the “atheist” label, for it wrongly implies “theism” is a legitimate starting point, since “a-theism” in effect means “away from a belief in god.” And it should be the reverse; namely: a belief in mysticism is “alogical” or “arational” [to distinguish it from irrational].

Someone who believes in mysticism is “alogical” or “arational,” no matter how logical and rational he or she may be in other areas.

And I have far more respect for someone not into mysticism who does what is moral, just and right, simply because that person recognizes the merits of those values, than I do someone who does what is moral, just and right simply because they fear hell or think it will gain them another gold brick for their “mansion in the sky.”

Correction. Atheists believe there is no god or anything spiritual. It’s Agnostics like myself who say there is no way to know either way and reserve judgement.

Atheism is a religion as well. Religious belief is the belief in something in the absence of any verifiable facts. In other words 100% based on faith. since it is impossible to prove thee is no such thing as God, gods, or an afterlife, any claims to know that these things do not exist is 100% faith based and so is also a religion.

An atheist makes the positive affirmation that there is no God! They are not waffling over whether or not there is a creator. They are saying that there is absolutely, positively, no God. Anything less than that is an agnostic. When someone states that they are an atheist because “there’s not enough evidence to point to a Creator of the universe”, or “A Creator hasn’t revealed enough of Himself”, then that person is NOT an atheist, but an agnostic. Their statement of belief (or non-belief) contains a contingency, therefore allowing for a certain amount of doubt on their part. Any doubt on their part indicates that they haven’t really reached a conclusion.

Hey TNCDEL, how do you define moral behavior? Upon what do you base morals? Who says? Pretty much you are going to paraphrase some of the ten commandments to answer those. So, the real question is why you reject the other commandments. My evidence for the existance of God and His importance to my life is that when you actually follow the ten commandments your life is improved. I’m not claiming a follower is wealthy, powerful, or any of that kind of better. No matter what happens, the follower of God is happier. Why else would Huss and Jerome sing while they burned to death rather than recant their beliefs. And before you go on about “Christians” doing the burning of Huss and Jerome, Christians are those who follow in Christ’s footsteps, not everyone who says they are a Christian. Perhaps you should read Jesus’ words for yourself.

      Bapdco:
      Not necessarily.

An agnostic can believe in one God or another, but not be a member of an organized religion.

An example: I am an Agnostic Christian. I do not follow a particular sect or church (Catholicism, Baptist, Seventh Day Adventist, etc), but I do believe that Christ is the Savior; and that Jesus is the Christ.

I grew weary of church-related politics and the infighting you often find in many churches. I also do not believe one must go to a specific building to pray on the Sabbath. So I have my beliefs, I don’t push them on others unless they are amenable (not likely where I live, sadly), I remain at home (I am incapable of driving (health issues)) and observe the Sabbath; and finally, I keep my beliefs between God and I.

      Please understand the difference.

      BAYUZHIZERO-

Your position would make you an unaligned Christian, not an Agnostic. There are many practitioners of personal faith that do not use or require a formal worshipping structure. Many ‘faiths’ on this planet are this way by their very nature (Buddhism, Shintoism, etc.). Some of those faiths also have formal structures but either the majority or a large minority stay personal with their practice of the faith.

This was somewhat rare in Christianity until the Born Again movement came about. It could be argued that many Born Again Christians are personal believers that may or may not be formally attending a worship structure.

Most Christians (as well as Hebrew and Islamic worshippers) like the sense of community, the support of others that share their belief system. The dark side of that same coin is the denial of anyone else that does not share that belief system and the degree of not sharing is entirely arbitrary. To a Hebrew or a Muslim, a Mormon is a Christian. To a Catholic or a Born Again Christian, Mormon’s are not and the reason is entirely arbitrary because clearly Mormon’s accept Christ as the Savior, accept the Bible and New Testament as scripture, so the fundamental hurdle is met, but some later, arbitrary one is not.

This arbitrary nature of religions, internal to themselves, is what turns many people like you off of structured worship. It is a dark side of religion that must be dealt with for them to advance.

Just wanna point out in response to one of those tweets — what has caused more death than anything is sin. All rejection of the perfect ways of living that the all-knowing God who is Love, created us, offers us free salvation, etc. — all such sin is what causes death.

Self-labeled “atheists” are going to have to own up to this at some point. Instead they try to just play word games and throw hate around (and they wonder why the world has so much violence…). Label all listening to a certain being “religion” and then define anything that involved violence also as “religion” (despite actual history), and voila, you’ve redefined religion as the causer of violence, when in reality, listening to the God who is perfectly Loving causes us to be the exact opposite! And if you’re going to reject Him, you’re more likely to commit violence too.

This really is pretty obvious. Macdonald’s reaction is spot-on. Kinda wish he would have explained it a little, rather than just reacting — but I think it was just an honest reaction to seeing someone exposing their incredible idiocy.

I hope he realizes that there’s a whole propaganda army of ‘atheists’ out there indoctrinating their followers to mindlessly parrot that pap all the time. Not a coherent thought ever seems to occur to them — they just say what they’re taught to say… over and over and over… It’s strange, but it’s the world as it is for now.

    Stand Strong Mr. MacDonald…

Ephesians 6:11-20 ‘Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.’

Hateful, small minded little mad men and women. They show themselves ever-time they attack someone for who they really are…

And God asks that we pray for them…call me a sinner cause it is hard to pray for these people who God still loves…I am a worm.

You are a sinner whom Christ gave His life for. You are precious.

It’s hard to love those who hate us, but that’s what Jesus did, and we only love Him because He first loved us. And He calls us to be like Him. I find that it helps when we’re honest with God and confess to Him, “I don’t want to obey You. I don’t want to love these people, I don’t want to try, and I don’t know how to change my heart. Only You can do that, so cleanse me and change me.” And then try praying for them again :)

more specifically communism which last time I checked is atheistic in its philosophy. that does not mean atheists support human suffering and supports killing humans, however the fruits of this kind of political philosophy is very clear. Religion even radical Islam has not killed as many people as Communism has. Also what most atheists seem to forget, the person whom most Christians follow (Jesus Christ) eschewed the kind of violence that takes human lives. He could have destroyed the Roman Empire if he wanted to he did not.

      1 Corinthians 2
10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[c] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
