ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A University of Central Florida student who pulled a dorm fire alarm in the middle of the night had a more sinister plan than sending students scurrying out into the night, authorities said.

Campus police said Monday that 30-year-old James Seevakumaran- who shot himself in the head as officers arrived, before any other students were hurt – was armed with two guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a backpack filled with explosives and a plan to attack other students as they fled the seven-story dorm where he lived.

His plans were thrown off by campus police officers’ quick response to the fire alarm and a 911 call from Seevakumaran’s roommate, who hid in a bathroom after Seevakumaran pointed a gun at him, UCF Police Chief Richard Beary said.

“It could have been a very bad day here for everybody. All things considered, I think we were very blessed here at the University of Central Florida,” Beary said. “One shooting is bad enough. Multiples would have been unthinkable. So, anybody armed with this type of weapon and ammunition could have hurt a lot of people here, particularly in a crowded area as people were evacuating.”

Some 500 students were evacuated from the building just after midnight, unaware how narrowly they had escaped what could have been another Virginia Tech-style bloodbath. Morning classes were canceled, but most campus operations resumed around noon.

“The kid’s bringing huge explosives in his room. So yeah, it could have been a lot worse,” 19-year-old UCF sophomore Anthony Giamanco said shortly after arriving on campus Monday morning.

Roommates told detectives that while Seevakumaran showed some anti-social tendencies, he had never expressed any violent behavior. The business major, who held a job at an on-campus sushi restaurant, had never been seen by university counselors and had no disciplinary problems with other students, said university spokesman Grant Heston.

Police shed no light on a motive, but Heston said that the school had been in the process of removing Seevakumaran from the dormitory because he hadn’t enrolled for the current semester. He had attended the university from 2010 through the fall semester.

Detectives found notes and other writings that indicated Seevakumaran had carefully planned an attack and “laid out a timeline of where he was going to be and what he was going to do,” Beary said.

Police were first alerted when Seevakumaran pulled a gun on one of his roommates who called 911 and holed up in a bathroom, Beary said. Around the same time, Seevakumaran pulled a fire alarm, apparently to get other students out in the open, the police chief said.

Police officers responded to the dorm within three minutes of the first call.

“His timeline got off,” Beary said. “We think the rapid response of law enforcement may have changed his ability to think quickly on his feet.”

In his room, investigators found four makeshift explosive devices in a backpack, a .45-caliber handgun, a .22-caliber tactical rifle, and a couple hundred rounds of ammunition, police said. Beary said it appears his weapons and ammunition purchases began in February locally in Orlando.

Antonio Whitehead, 21, said he heard the fire alarm go off in the dorm and thought it was a routine event.

“All of a sudden, I felt the crowd move a little faster. And a police officer with a machine gun or something told everyone to start moving a lot faster,” he said.

Like everyone else is wondering….. FROM WHERE DID THIS PERSON COME FROM ???? What nationality is defined by his last name? We need more details on this “30 year old Kid” that should not have been there as he did not enter himself for the semister. It’s amazing that hardly any of this insane wild killing sprees were never heard of or took place until 2008′ and each year there of it is increasing, makes one wonder who is provoking this kind of practice???????????????????????????

I HATE IT when news articles LEAVE OUT important information and makes readers do their research. Political correctness? Journalists still researching? Journalist s are lazy? If this shooter were a white Christian male belonging to a militia group – readers would know instantly.

1. This 30 year old “student” was KICKED OUT of the college for not paying his tuition and thus could not enroll in the upcoming semester. He had attended the university from 2010 through the fall semester.- “”He was not enrolled in any courses in spring 2013 and was in the process of being removed from UCF housing, where he lived on the third floor of Tower 1,” the university said.”

2. Fellow students say Sevakumaran had anti-social tendencies and did not have many friends but no one thought he was violent.

3. Photo is for Oct 2006 mug shot when he was arrested for driving with a suspended license. He was fined $105 and ordered to pay more than $200 court costs.

I see that a lot of you automatically assume that Seevakumaran is a Muslim name. It’s not! It is more than likely an Indian name. I guess he could be a convert, but he would have been forced to give up the Christian name “James” upon doing so. The best way to describe him would be to say that he is a “Nut”, or “Evil Lunatic”.

I am not glad that the guy is dead. It is sad. I am glad that he didn’t kill anybody else. I think it might be better if we weren’t so quick to rush to judgement about the motive and muslim religion. We should really wait for the facts….then judge!

Who is he where is he from what is his immigration status? Why is he in a dorm at age 30? What is his religion?
Our society not only breeds dangerous lunatics but our government supports importing them. A “tactical .22″ ? LOL. What were the “bombs”? The police like to call homemade devices which aren’t capable of functioning dangerous-deadly-bombs and without the police to save you from them you would all be killed. They do it all the time so I question them without precise detailed description which are unlikely to be forthcoming.
As usual more questions than answers with this story and there are so many coming so fast they can gloss over and never get back to us with the real story.

I have seen the .22 conversions and .22 base rifles with a tactical motiff.
That’s the point… it’s cosmetic… make up. make believe.
.22 is useless as a tactical weapon… deflects on impact with glass, bounces off bone at any distance.
The ‘black rifles’ in .22 are meant to be inexpensive toys only for use at the range.
so referring to it in the article as a ‘tactical weapon’ is an intentional use of language to demonize the guns… all guns, that i fully believe is unconscious at this point in the majority of journalists…
akin to our inherent distrust of any journalist at this point, without any conscious thought, when we here a journalist is reporting some ‘news.’

i wonder when we will start to hear that we need to outlaw back packs and dormitories…
