Chipotle Pulls Sponsorship of Boy Scouts Event Over Gay Ban

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) —  Chipotle Mexican Grill has pulled its sponsorship of Utah’s “Scout-O-Rama” because of the Boy Scouts of America’s long-standing ban on gays.

The popular Colorado-based restaurant chain initially signed on to provide about $4,200 worth of coupons to the Utah Boy Scouts’ annual event, scheduled for May 4 in a Salt Lake City suburb. The Boy Scouts’ Great Salt Lake Council is one of the largest in the country, with the majority of troops sponsored by Mormon churches.

Chipotle’s anti-discrimination policy states that the company shouldn’t support organizations that exclude based on sexual orientation. When company leaders found out about the promise to offer coupons, they nixed the idea, Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold said.

“It was never our intention for this to be this some kind of an endorsement of broader Boy Scout policies,” said Arnold, adding that the company sponsors community events across the country to make connections with residents.

“Ultimately, we decided that the right thing to do was to remain consistent with our policy and terminate the sponsorship,” Arnold said.

The rescission of the offer was first reported by Think Progress.org.

The Chipotle decision comes as the Boy Scouts of America’s national executive board ponders a proposal to move away from its no-gays membership policy or a local option that would give the decision to the individual troops.

In late January, Boy Scouts of America leaders announced the proposal. But the organization’s national executive board decided a week later that it needed to more time to make the crucial decision, pushing the vote back until May.

Nationally, some companies have had trouble squaring their own in-house anti-discrimination policies with the Scouts’ gay ban. Several of those, including Intel and 3M, withdrew their financial support for the national Scouts, but continued to direct funds to troops — like one in St. Paul, Minn. — that have publicly opposed the ban and refused to eject gay Scouts or parents.

Earlier this month, the Scouts distributed a questionnaire to 1.1 million adult Scouts that used fictional situations to discern where Scouting’s membership falls on questions of homosexuality, gays camping with children and gays in church leadership. It allowed adult Scouts to indicate a range of feelings, from strong support to strong opposition to the ban on gays. The Scouts haven’t said whether they will distribute the results of that survey. Some individual councils also sent out their own questionnaires.

Chipotle, which has four restaurants in the Salt Lake City area, has sponsored past Utah Scout-O-Ramas and will be watching to see how the vote goes in May, Arnold said.

Leaders in the Boy Scouts’ Great Salt Lake Council and Mormon church officials applauded the February decision by the Scouts to take more time to make the decision.

The Utah Scout’s council is one of the largest in the country, with 5,500 troops and 73,400 youth members. Boy Scouts is an integral part of Mormon culture in Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsors 99 percent of the Scout troops in the Salt Lake City area.

Nationally, the Mormon church has more Boy Scouts than any other denomination, with 37,000 troops and 420,000 youth members, according to figures from the Boy Scouts of America.

Rick Barnes, executive of the Boy Scouts’ Great Salt Lake Council in the Salt Lake City area, said he understands Chipotle’s decision. Sponsorship for the May 4 Scout-O-Rama remains strong even without the restaurant’s coupons. They have $65,000 in sponsorship now, a figure that includes cash donations and coupons. That’s about average for the event, Barnes said.

“If that’s what they need to, we respect that,” Barnes said. “The show will go on.”

The annual event plays host to 15,000-20,000 scouts and their family members, Barnes said. There is a pinewood derby and a host of other activities including an indoor zip line, BB gun range and an ice tower.

The Mormon church continues to teach its members that marriage is only between a man and a woman and that same-sex relationships are sinful. But, in December, the LDS church launched a website encouraging members to be more compassionate in discussions about homosexuality. The website instructs Mormons to be loving and respectful toward gays and lesbians, while appealing to gay and lesbian Mormons to stay in the church.

Barnes said the upcoming vote is a hot topic among scout leaders and families in Utah. The Scouts’ future in Utah hinges on it, he said.

“It all depends on how it turns out,” Barnes said.

Hello, I’m dismayed that Chipotle has chosen to publicly denounce the Boy Scouts of America. It’s fine for you choose to hire whom you like, but it’s not fine for you to offer to sponsor an event and then yank the funding. Were you unaware of the core principles of the BSA? More importantly, do you think it’s appropriate for people to discuss their sexuality with under-aged boys? I find this extremely concerning. As a Scout leader, I’ve never discussed sex with the boys under my responsibility. That’s for their parents to handle. It’s disconcerting to hear that some adults absolutely must talk to boys about homosexuality. That really sounds like pedophilia to me. As a long-term customer of Chipotle, it’s tough for me to to stick to my principles, as I love your food. However, I will no longer patronize any Chipotle locations over this matter. While you are free to do with your money as you please, I will not support pedophiles or those who support them. Homosexuality does not belong in any scouting program.

RICK..that’s how you do it. You do it the same way the left does it..you don’t make it about attacking someone, you make it about “helping” someone. This makes your cause appear noble, safe and benign. So you’re not attacking Chipotle, you’re supporting the boy scouts. Trust me the more often and aggressively this is done, the more ground we can win back. How do I know? Because it’s worked so well for the left when they do it.

Why support the Boy Scouts? They are being pusillanimous. So is the LDS Church. The boys in my LDS Ward were unable to go to Boy Scout camp this year because we didn’t have enough funds, BUT those boys had been out all year on fund raiser after fund raiser BUT NONE OF THOSE FUNDS WENT TO OUR WARD. So guess what: even after raising enough money to send those boys to camp nine times over, they still had to stay home BECAUSE ALL OF THAT FUNDRAISING GOES TO THE BSA HEADQUARTERS?!? Why? For the “leadership” I guess, Well wringing your hands and taking polls and evaluating how much “loss of revenue” there will be if they DON’T lift the ban is NOT LEADERSHIP. So I say, “Hey BSA, Hey LDS Leaders, IF you LIFT the ban on gays. my soon to be cub scout age son will NOT be a part of Boy Scouts. He will join the DeMolays. So stick THAT in you Order of the Arrow Peace Pipe and SMOKE IT!

One Chipotle burrito-sized tortilla is 290 calories. A bag of their chips adds another 570. That is a third a normal six foot man’s daily calories and it’s all fats and carbs. Save your obese self and don’t patronize Chipotle (unless you just consume the salad bowl, with shredded lettuce instead of rice, and have no sweetened soda drink)…AND you avoid the 290 calorie Vinaigrette dressing.

Chipotle has some Q_ueer people that want to be Boy Scout leaders. They also want people to quit discriminating against those phedophiles so they can watch those little boys shower. I was a leader in Cubs & Boy Scouts so I could watch my 3 sons. At all the big meets I was chosen to watch the showers as about 10 kids went at a time. They chose dads to keep Q_eers and phedophiles from these 6 to 14 year olds. I now have 4 grand sons and I don’t want them near a Chipotle restraunt or a scout group that allows H_mos in as leaders. This is political correctness gone wild. I don’t care about all this good touchey feeling these folks get but to put kids at risk won’t work. If one of these Q_ueers got ahold of theirs they would change their thinking.

I just wrote this letter to Chipotle:

      To Whom it May Concern,
I just read an article reporting that Chipotle had at one time, graciously committed to supporting a wonderful youth/community activity… The Boy Scouts of America Scout-A-Rama, which is scheduled for May 04, 2013. The article then cited that Chipotle decided to yank their generous donation, due to the BSA’s policy of not allowing gay men and youth to participate. This saddens me a great deal. It appears that Chipotle has decided to tell the BSA that all of the great and wonderful things they do for communities and youth, mean absolutely nothing, because they refuse to allow sexual activist into their organization. Wow!!!

Nevermind the fact that millions of BS complete hundreds of thousands of service hours every year. Nevermind the fact they teach boys and young men to be honest, strong, productive members of society. Chiptole has sent a strong and very loud message to America. You are saying, it doesn’t matter how many good things you do, or how many young men you keep on the straight and narrow path…as long as you do not bow down to gay extremism, your organization and the boys you represent mean nothing.

Well…congratulations. Your message has been heard. Hear mine. I live in Las Vegas and dine at Chipotle weekly. The store on E. Craig road is especially used to serving service members from Nellis AFB. I will do everything in my power to sway everyone I know from visiting Chipotle.

There’s no good reason to surrender to organized lefty perversity when the battle has already been won. Just hinting at did the organization more harm than it internal traitors could manage with their self-righteous now-towing to organized lefty perversity. “HAHAHA!!! Amazing! so now all the people complaining about a Chick-fil-A boycott want to boycott Chipotle, a far better restaurant. Hilarious!”

Actually, I think the two situations are a bit different. The Chic-fil-A was about the owner supporing organizations with his PERSONAL money, not corporate money. This one with Chipotle is about their CORPORATE money being pulled from what most people know is a very good organization. So, to try and compare the two situations is a bit dishonest.

I’ve never eaten at Chic-fil-A but hear good things about their food. I have eaten at Chipotle, and while I can say their food tasted good, their atmosphere is somewhat akin to eating in a large, hollow tin can – noisier than hell and even a bit disheveled looking.

As to the Boy Scouts, it seems to make sense to not allow gay scout leaders in. I would not want my daughter doing overnight campouts with her troop and a male heterosexual leader any more than I would want a gay scoutmaster out with my son. While that adult most likely would not do anything wrong simply because he/she is gay, why put a possible temptation there? Do we not value our children’s lives more than that than to risk something terrible happening?

Worse, I can’t understand anyone who thinks it’s appropriate. My God, when I was a Scout leader, I never talked about sex with the boys, at all! There’s simply no place for it. That’s the parent’s job.

If you want to be gay, be gay till your eyes explode, but you don’t need to talk about it in front of young boys. You sure don’t need to act out your sexual beliefs in front of young boys. And you CERTAINLY shouldn’t be telling young boys your behavior is normal. Cearly, it’s not.

Chipotle became a susidiary of McDonald’s in 1999 when McDonald’s acquired the controlling stake of the company. At one point, McDonald’s owned shares accounting for approximately 87% of the voting power of Chipotle’s common stock. In Chipotle’s earlier stages, McDonald’s helped Chipotle’s operations by sharing its own distribution networks.

Currently, Mcdonald’s no longer has anything to do with Chipotle Mexican Grill. They have divested completely from Chipotle.

Just an FYI to those Statists who moronically complain at us regarding our refusal to purchase a specific brand when that brand is owned by a corporate parent.

Just because a corporation purchases another, doesn’t mean the corporate parent dictates what happens at the subsidiary. In some cases this is true, but my experience tells me that most of the time this doesn’t happen. The corporate parent sees a profititable company and purchases it to make more money. Often this is done to gain market share over a competitor, or to consolidate like-minded businesses within an industry.

Most often, the subsidiary is allowed to “keep doing what makes you profitable and we won’t get in the way”.

When you make huge assumptions about how the world (or corporations) works, it makes you look very foolish. Boycotting one subsidiary while consuming another does not necessarily make one a hypocrite.

Sorry, I knew I should have looked it up. I didn’t know of the 2006 divestiture. I’m living in the past.

So Glenn Beck is a statist because he points out several times a week that GE is the owner of MSNBC?

      He even did that today.

I think the term is fascist for Mr. Beck, but not for this reason specifically.

And let’s slow down the tape and see just how HAIRYMETH did that lefty trick.

Notice first..”sorry..I should have looked it up”? That’s a common lefty trick. First you vociferously and adamantly state something to smear or insinuate..make it look as certain and rock solid as possible as if it’s plain and simple. You don’t need the facts on your side and of course once it’s said it can’t be “unsaid”. Like corpulent Candy Crowley’s “no Mr Romney the president did say it was a terrorist attack” at the debate. She was proven wrong and later backtracked on her oh so sure statement, but the damage was done, she said it before millions of viewers while recanting it to a much smaller group. HAIRYMETH’s tactic was along the same lines.

Now here is where the lefty magician does his real magic….

When you’re caught do one of two things..run away, post somewhere else and pretend you never said it (this is SENDTHEMETEORS favorite tactic), or feign correction in a brief allusion to the error (make it also as detached from you as you can) then immediately go for another smear to foment unrest and distraction from your earlier attempt to smear.

It’s a simple trick and easy to do with some practice as HAIRYMETH has demonstrated here today.

Or another trick employed by lefty trolls is what MONICNE does here. Create many different screennames for yourself and disappear for a while until you believe the heat is off you. In this case…it’s the “SLEAZY HIPPO” log in being used.

Using another lefty ploy- the appearance of appealing to nobility while actually attempting to distract from the lies and smears of HAIRYMETH- MONICNE (now posting as SLEAZY HIPPO) attempts to make me appear the unreasonable one. It was the HAIRYMETH troll that attempted the smear hoping no one knew any better and when it was caught, it feigned a quick “oops my bad” and launched into an immediate attack against Beck.

But MONICNE/SLEAZY HIPPO ignores that attack on Beck because as it has to attempt to smear me instead in order to bait me and distract for the HAIRYMETH troll.

Simple tricks employed by the morally bankrupt left.

Hopefully, by the time he’s old enough to join, this nonsense will be long past. Then the Boy Scouts can devote all of that excess energy that they used to keep gays out to focus on the real potential predators–pedophiles.

Chipotle’s food is too froo froo, hippie, leftie for most discerning tastes anyway. Qdoba and Moe’s Southwest Grill make better burritos.

Funny how progs are all “yaaay, tolerance” as long as you agree with them, but they have to pressure others into silence or compliance if you or your business doesn’t fit their narrative.

I remember the days when family values were a good thing. Now corporate America won’t touch them with a ten foot pole. This type of “diversity” is pervasive in the business world. They will throw all kinds of money at LGBT causes, but refuse to support the organizations that promote family values because they “discriminate” (what those of us with common sense would call discernment). Most will also discipline any employee who voices disagreement with their “diversity” policies, no matter if it was done politely. I agree that we should let them know that we disagree with their ridiculous policies. The Human (only if your an LGBT human) Rights Organization ranks companies based on their compliance with “workplace equality”. The higher the score the more compliant. Maybe I’ll direct more of my business to the stores with lower scores and let them know why. http://www.hrc.org/files/assets/resources/2013BuyersGuide.pdf

We must all submit to every desire of the homosexuals or we’re just not good people. I’ve had just about enough of this crap.

You’re in for a pretty long remainder of your life then, because I guarantee you that popular opinion is not moving in your favor.

It’s called “jamming” GONZO and it’s a carefully crafted and rigidly adhered to strategy of Gay Inc and it’s enablers. Anyone that does not buy Gay Inc’s line is a bigot and a “hater”.
This will of course continue if homosexual marriage is ratified at the federal level.
Take what happened to eHarmony for example….
Gay Inc. chose to sue the site for not providing homosexuals with their services…something the CEO of the site is against. Never mind that the internet is rife with sites that provide “dating” services for homosexuals as well as venues to find anonymous, no strings sex. No…eHarmony must be brought to heel. Gay Inc is a spiteful, hateful little group of damaged goods liberals.

Popular opinion wasn’t in favor of the Jews in 1930s Germany either, was it? Screw popular opinion. I’ll stick with God myself.

I’ve never eaten at Chipotle and it looks like I won’t be now either.

Encinom attacked Christians in the above post, even though there was no mention in the original. This is all you need to know about who is putting out the propaganda. It is the atheistic Joos who sit on the Boards in NYC.

To all the bigots who say they’ll stop going to chipotle because of this: I don’t think you realize how hard avoiding pro-gay businesses really is. The HRC even makes a little list for you if you want to try.

There is almost no way you can live your life without spending your hard earned money with a company that will hand it over to the gay agenda. If you don’t like it, you need to move to a less socially developed country.

But they’re the best of us GONZO. If only the whole world was homosexual it would all be spontaneous outbursts of dance numbers, Glee and “fabulous” interior decorating. Don’t look at the higher incidences of depression, HIV infection, drug use and STDs (heck…the government is apparently also wasting millions of dollars into “research” as to why lesbians are disproportionately overweight) …that’s not to be spoken about.

Oh it’s easy JEFF. Pick a few “favorites” and boycot them. There’s lots of choices for similar cuisine to Chipotle’s one will not be denying one’s self anything.

      Nice try clownshoes.

Who needs them? Losing their sponsorship probably isn’t that big of a deal anyway. They’re probably afraid that they will become the next Chic Filet if they don’t kowtow to the LGBT.
