Judge’s Surprising Claim on How Teen Gunman Got Away with ‘Killer’ Shirt in Court: I Didn’t See It

T.J. Lane unbuttons his shirt during sentencing Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Chardon, Ohio. Lane, 18, was given three lifetime prison sentences without the possibility of parole for opening fire last year in a high school cafeteria in a rampage that left three students dead and three others wounded. (AP)
An Ohio judge says he didn’t see the word “killer” written on an admitted school shooter’s T-shirt in court Tuesday or he would have ordered him to change clothes.
T.J. Lane, 18, received three life sentences after he pleaded guilty to killing three students at a Chardon, Ohio high school in February 2012. He walked into court and removed a button-down shirt to reveal a white T-shirt with the word scrawled in pen, then added to the display with a brief, obscene statement.
“The hand that pulled the trigger that killed your sons now masturbates to their memory. F–k all of you,” Lane said, flipping his middle finger toward victims’ families.
In a statement after the hearing, Judge David Fuhry said he did not see Lane’s T-shirt, according to USA Today.
“The court was unaware of the shirt. The court did not notice the shirt. Had the court noticed the shirt, the court would have immediately stopped the proceedings, adjourned the court and the court would have ordered the defendant to put on proper attire,” Fuhry said.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 10:55amI don’t think this kid was raised by his parents or conditioned by society to be this way. I think he is simply an evil, sadistic, vindictive person and there’s nothing anyone could have done to change or prevent it. We need to stop blaming the world for people like this existing and begin to accept that some simply are just naturally evil. It’s tough for us to accept, but at some point that’s the only explanation left.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 11:11amI agree with you. I’m sure its a fine mix of “nature” and “nurture.” An evil person can be egged on by life experiences. Unfortunately, some people have poor coping skills for life’s struggles/challenges.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 4:00pmNo doubt of that.
Some are conditioned to do evil. Feminism was the “in thing” when I was in high school and taught by teachers. As a result, most of the girls got into drugs, the party scene, etc. And as a result of that, some are dead, most are addicted, most had their kids out of wedlock, the average was 5 STDs per woman in 2000, many committed crimes, kids were born with fetal alcohol syndrome, fetal marijuana syndrome, etc.
Most of them grew up in the church, had good parents. But they were fed a constant stream of garbage in school.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 9:37amLt Joe Kenda who narrates his past cases as a homicide detective on “Homicide Hunter” had a show where a person negligently killed a family of 5. I bring this up, because it shows that people are the weapon and not an object.

T.J. Lane was motivated enough that he was not going to be stopped by any gun law.

That would work.
I think dropping them in a tropical island paradise would be good too. Those are deceptive. Shelter & food do not seem to be big problems, but it is harder than most people think. There is also more disease even though it is not the normal ones people fall prey to.
Such an island would be …a … re-useable. And in short order. But it would give some one long enough to think about where they went wrong.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 8:52amForgetting about certain people’s juvenile need for revenge and the “equal justice”, as a society we need to concentrate on prevention of such crimes. Punishing someone later is useless in the attempt of stopping a crime in the future. Prison is not a deterrent, as we see from an over populated prison system . Add a undiagnosed physiological disorder and a person who is prone to hostility and that will end up in some kind of devastating event. Parents need to be responsible for these actions. They know something is wrong with their child and do nothing about it. Unfortunately, medical science has not advanced to the point of helping these perpetrators before they lose control. Praying for them will not help. Post crime prison is useless. Without the proper acknowledgement and treatment of child and adult murders, innocent people will continue to die.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 9:54amPrayer does help.
It all depends on how you look at prayer. Prayer focuses the mind (or can) like Lou Tice’s affirmations from his “Smart Talk” motivational system. Read up on Lou Tice. A smart pastor can get his congregation to pray and then to act. That is perform charity, etc. So I would ask not to tear down those who are Christian or other religions. I would ask you that after they pray, that you say “Good you prayed that was nice, now what are you going to do about it”. You will get farther.
I briefly read the linked story, a Blaze article from a year ago. Then I went to the wiki. I remember this story. T.J. Lane shot the new boyfriend of his ex girlfriend.
Unlike the song by “The Police” sung by lead man Sting called “CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU”, this young man did not commit suicide. He committed murder. That is your proximate cause.
What could have prevented this is a father who could have told his son “Don’t worry, there are more fish in the sea”. But his father was a violent and had been incarcerate for 1 year in the past for attempted murder.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 10:32amYou don’t allow a rabid dog to do further harm and you don’t leave psychopaths who have killed to remain on the streets. There is evil in this world and not all of it can be “treated” away. Sometimes elimination and/or containment are required for the protection of society.
I suspect the smirk and giggles will disappear as soon as this fresh meat enters the adult population in prison and is repeatedly raped.

In any case now that you’re corrected, you do realise that there’s a difference between a diagnosed mental condition and sociopathy right?
This kid’s a sociopath, he’s in full control of his actions and wits today and was then during the assault.
He belongs in prison for the rest of his life and deserves no pity for his remorseless actions.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 12:16pmyou can’t hold parents accountable if medical science can’t prevent the events. what are the parents supposed to do? imprison the kid? that would get the parents locked up for child abuse. if you have not dealt with a loved one with a mental illness and with the mental healthcare community, then SHUT UP. you don’t know what you are talking about and should not talk. parents who try to get care for their children with mental disorders get frustration, enormous bills, and “professionals” who make it worse because they don’t know anything about what is going on or what to do about it. THEN, the child turns 18 and you can no longer participate in their care, but you still get blamed for the kids actions. I am eagerly awaiting the parent blame for the 17 and 18 year olds who stole guns, ammo, and a truck from one’s parents; drove to TX and shot themselves after a failed robbery attempt. for the record: the kid broke into a locked room and into a locked gun cabinet. the guns were not just lying around for the taking.

I think they are wrong, but now I have something to go on (unless they were lying).
I would like to point out that economists have proven that prison terms do work & can prove it quantitatively.
I would also like top point out that reformers (?) who renamed prisons, penitentiaries, do have a valid point. If you release someone with no means of support after a prison sentence for theft for example, what can you expect but more crime?

Today touch your kid go to jail, then loose the kid to the state
Today the nanny state will take care of kids with “affection” and drugs.
As for Dr. Spock, the person the nanny states follows blindly, his grandson committed suicide.
