Palestinians Remove Bethlehem Monument Erasing Israel’s Existence So Obama Won’t See it
The Palestinian-controlled Bethlehem Municipality removed a stone monument of historic Palestine, worried President Barack Obama would see it when he visits the birthplace of Jesus this week. The monument shows a map that negates the existence of Israel.
But the operation to hide the monument turned into a tug-of-war with local activists who insisted the structure be returned to its rightful place.
Instead of going through the usual process of appealing to the council, activists – along with some of the council members themselves – returned the monument to its original location.
The Jerusalem Post’s Veteran Arab Affairs Correspondent Khaled Abu Toameh who first reported the story writes:
Bethlehem Mayor Vera Baboun denied Tuesday that the monument, along with an olive tree, had been removed because of Obama’s visit. She said the original plan was to replace only the olive tree with a statue of a white dove – the work of a local artist.
Baboun said that the decision to remove the monument, which depicts a map of historic Palestine without Israel, had been taken unanimously by the Bethlehem municipal council.
The monument will be replaced with a statue of a white dove symbolizing peace, she said.
However, members of the Bethlehem municipal council denied that they had voted in favor of removing the stone monument. They said the municipal council would launch an investigation into the case to find out who gave the order to remove the monument.
Abu Toameh explains that monument was erected in honor of the “birth of the State of Palestine on November 29, 2012 [the UN vote] and the launching of the Palestinian revolution on January 1, 1965,” according to its inscription.
He quotes Najla al-Hajj, the director of a charity and the wife of a man serving a life sentence in Israeli prison, saying the Palestinians have the right to “set up any monument or map that represents their struggle and steadfastness.”
The tug-of-war over the monument comes on the heels – literally – of violent protests on Monday in the same city against Obama’s visit.
Protesters threw shoes at an American advance team’s vehicle as it drove near Manger Square, on its way to prepare for the presidential visit.
As TheBlaze reported, Palestinians also trampled on and set fire to a billboard of Obama as they chanted: “America is the head of the snake.”
They wanted to send a message to Obama that Palestinians have “been deprived of the right to have 3G telecommunication technology because they compete with Israeli companies.”

What’s the point? There was a time before which there was no Judea, no Israel. So, your same logic would apply to those nation states too. Abram came from the area which is present day Iraq. So, let’s call the area Canaan.
@Jerk:
I would state my logic. I would even talk about history repeating itself. Cause it does. But, at this juncture, jerk, I feel it would be lost on you, ya know. Do you study history? Do you study prophecy and the prophetic books and fulfillment? Unless you do study these things, well then, the LOGIC is wasted in discussion. I got books, volumes on this stuff. And, yes, I am a scholar. But that too, makes no difference on you. I can tell. I can see.

As for Zionism and Communism, you’re making the same mistake many Jews make. Communism is a Jewish movement, not a Zionist movement. Don’t equate Jew with Zionism.

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 1:39pmSyria Palestina:
After crushing the Bar Kokhba revolt,135 AD, the Roman Emperor Hadrian applied the name Syria Palestina to the entire region, that had formerly included Judaea Province. Hadrian probably chose a name that revived the ancient name of Philistia (Palestine), combining it with that of the neighboring province of Syria, in an attempt to suppress Jewish connection to the land.
In 63 BC, Syria was incorporated into the Roman Republic as a province, following the successful campaign of Pompeius the Great against the Parthians.
During the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the independent Hasmonean state of Judea expanded in territories of the collapsing Seleucid Empire, but from the Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 63 BC onwards, it increasingly fell under foreign influence. Judaea at first retained its independence, but an internal struggle between pro-Roman and pro-Persian heirs of the Hasmonean dynasty, eventually led Herod the Great to assume power in 37 BC, making Judaea a client Kingdom of Rome. Following Herod’s death the Herodian Kingdom became a Tetrarchy, partitioned among Herod’s sons, but in 6 AD Roman intervention made Judaea a Roman Province.
The Provinces of Judaea and Syria were key scenes of an increasing conflict between Judaean and Hellenistic population, which exploded into full scale Jewish-Roman Wars, beginning with the Great Jewish Revolt of 66-70. Disturbances followed throughout the reigon during the Qitos War in 117-118 and again in 132–135.

We should call a region after the name of the vanquished inhabitants? Both the ancient Philistines and the Canaanites are extinct cultures with no one who carries their name to this day. Why should we name a region after them if they haven’t existed in over 2000 years? Perhaps you’ll tell me we should have renamed Iraq as Babylonia before we left as well. After all, no country called Iraq existed before 20th century, right?
Israel declared itself to be Israel in 1948, naming itself after the ancient ancestor of the Jewish people just as the Israelites did when they created the ancient Kingdom of Israel. They then won a war earning their right to exist as Israel and not Palestine.

Palestine existed at one time as a name for a region that has since fallen out of use and been replaced. The name itself was not even derived from the native inhabitants or even from a key geographical feature.
The simple fact is there is not and never has been a state or country called Palestine and there is no longer any defined region of the world referred to by that name. Besides, the definition of Palestine has changed so much since it was first introduced. The British Mandate of Palestine meant two different things in 1917, when it was established, and just two years later in 1919. In 1948, the British Mandate ended and though an Arab state was proposed (no name was specified), it was never formed. Thus Palestine ceased to be anything more than a outdated name over 60 years ago.
