Pink Floyd Bassist Tells Pro-Palestinian Site Boycotting Israel Is the ‘Way to Go’

Roger Waters, center, founding member of Pink Floyd, meets U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sits waiting for the start of a meeting on Palestine, Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in New York. (AP)
Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters told a pro-Palestinian website that Israel needs to be boycotted the same way South Africa was during the apartheid era.
Waters, the bassist for the legendary English rock band, told Electronic Intifada that a boycott of Israel is “the way to go.”
“I think that the kind of boycott that was implemented against the apartheid regime in South Africa back in the day is probably the most effective way to go because the situation is that the Israeli government runs an apartheid regime in Israel, the occupied territories and everywhere else it decides,” Waters told the site.
Waters said he has personally asked fellow musicians to boycott Israel — though declined to provide names — and said he has written an open letter urging the music community to join the movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions.
He said he was heartened by Stevie Wonder’s decision in December to cancel a concert benefiting the Israeli military.
Waters addressed the United Nations last year, calling Israel “guilty of a number of international crimes” including apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

…Then again, to play bass for Pink Floyd, other than the riff from the song “Money” what does a bassist really need to know? Two, maybe three notes…?

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 12:14amHow come I never hear any examples or proof that Israel is an apartheid government? I’m listening. In what way does Israel oppress Palestinians? Do they not have a right to defend themselves? Why do Palestinians that work in Israel have to hide that fact from their fellow Palestinians? Why do people from other countries push for a 2 state solution when Palestinians have rejected that every time? Why does the Palestinian government regularly threaten to wipe Israel out? Why do these people like Water’s ignore this?

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 7:06pmMr Waters dour and pessimistic lyrics were the element that ate away the fun in Floyds music. I liked the early stuff up to “Meddle”. “Dark Side” was overplayed so I only bought it later to add to my collection. “Wish” was the same. “Animals” was given to me. I actually bought “Wall” but almost immediately gave it away to the guy that gave me Animals. And that was the end of my Pink Floyd interest. I like Richard Wright and Syd vs the overplayed hand of Mr Waters.

Abraham was in the land back in Genesis n the Lord led him there, then after their captivity in Eygpt God led them there again, so it is Gods choice that Abrahams seed dwells in the land . The place were he went to sacrifice his son Isaac is the same mount were Jesus Christ was crucified hundreds of years later. So the decendents of Abraham have title rights to the land. Those that call themselves Palestinians were migrant workers that were taken in by the Jewish people. So its like having illegal aliens trying to lay claim to DC. Palestine was coined in the 3rd century by a Roman General Titus that hated the Jewish people so he changed the name of the land to punish them.

Palestinian freedom fighters? You make it sound like Palestinian terrorism was a response to Israel’s conquest in 1967. In reality, the terrorists have been attacking Israel since 1948. So unless you can show me how the French Resistance was fighting the Nazis before they invaded France I suggest you find a better analogy.

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 6:28pmElectronic Intifada — sounds like thinking along the lines of, “None may barter or trade?”
A prophecy, October 6, 1978, before Israel exchanged 90-percent of the land won in the 1973 Yom Kippur War for peace, which led to the “land for peace” process with Arafat and the P.L.O.: “We shall say unto you these words, of this peace, this peace that your President [Jimmy Carter] has hid behind. Egypt now prepares to make war as she pleads for peace — and she shall make it in such a manner that it shall look as though the Israelians are at fault. But we say unto this lands [Israel] that the Eagle [U.S.A.] shall spread his wings and coveth — beware of Egypt. Beware of the Palestinians who now plan to destroy your cities. Beware of the Arabian gold which now is buying its way into your country. All is part. For those who shall take control for the Anti-Christ, none other than them may barter or sell. It has been written. We said before, look unto Daniel, of the four beasts, and the last beast was made of iron. That beast was Rome.” [See The Revelation 13:16-18 and Daniel, chapter 7.]

Israel is an EX-socialist country and is moving farther away from socialism everyday. Just look at the most recent elections: the socialist leaning Labor party went from being the second largest in the Knesset to being beaten out by a centrist party that was brand new at the time. Moreover, Labor has been on the decline for decades. Unless, of course, you want to argue that a tiny country like Israel could have the third largest number of companies traded on the NY stock exchange while being socialist.

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 6:35pmSo, Jerk,
I take it you are a fan of “no borders”
Does that include your home as well ?

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 6:42pmZeneta, you are absolutely incorrect, giving meaning to the word assume. I am a nationalistic American. I believe in sovereignty and the right to self-governance, self-determination. America is my home. Those other two-bit nations are not.

I agree. Has he taken a look at S. Africa today. There is so much crime there, they kill the white farmers and and steal from any business they can. Ya. it’s safe alright!

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 6:52pmFair enough, Jerk.
So we are clear, when Israel builds a wall, do you see it as keeping folks out or keeping them in ?
You claim your US sovereignty and that of the United States.
Does Israel have the same right ?
Just to be clear.
If so, how in the world could you see Israel as an apartheid state ?

In Apartheid South Africa there were two classes of citizens with differing rights. In Israel everyone is subject to the same laws. These Palestinians aren’t even citizens and don’t even want to be in most cases so they can’t claim they aren’t being treated as equal citizens because they aren’t citizens to begin with. Meanwhile, the Palestinians who are citizens have all the same rights as Israelis.

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 7:13pmSyd Barrett is dead; having suffered from mental illness, likely caused by/worsened by drug use. What’s Roger Waters’ excuse? Oh, too many years of trying to bring Syd back. Anyway, whay do we give a rat’s rear what he thinks, any more than Madonna, Lindsey Lohan, or much of anyone? Is he trying to be “relevant” again? How’s that working out?

Posted on March 20, 2013 at 6:05pmWelcome, to the Machine.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been? It’s alright we know where you’ve been.
You’ve been in the pipeline, filling in time,
provided with toys and Scouting for Boys.
You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn’t like school, and you know you’re nobody’s fool,
So welcome to the machine.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream? It’s alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar. He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
So welcome to the machine.
