Vassula Ryden, 71, is a controversial mystic whose claims have brought both inspiration and skepticism — depending on who you talk to. Her new book, “Heaven Is Real But so Is Hell” is sure to continue this dichotomy, as Ryden, a Greek Orthodox, shares visions of the afterlife that she claims God has explicitly sent to her. TheBlaze interviewed Ryden last week to learn more about her personal story.
Ryden has made waves through her prophecy claims, noting that God first reached out to her in the late 1980s and told her that she would be used to further his work. As her biography notes, since 1988, she has traveled around the world, visiting 79 countries and giving more than 1,000 presentations. Ryden claims that theologians, priests and others have found her messages to be legitimate — and divinely-inspired.
“Heaven Is Real But so Is Hell” builds upon this reputation and explores these theological themes. According to a description published on the book’s web site, the text, “revisits her remarkable journeys into the supernatural world, and recounts the critical Messages she has received for our modern world.” An official overview reads:
In Heaven is Real But So is Hell, internationally renowned speaker, author and mystic Vassula Ryden takes the reader into the supernatural world where she has experienced the hidden forces that affect every moment of our lives. It features her amazing encounters with both good and evil forces and reveals profoundly important messages for all humanity, largely hidden until now. Sometimes harrowing, but filled with hope, it answers many of the questions that people have been asking for thousands of years and at the same time offers a glimpse into God’s love and justice, and of what is soon to come. Ryden, who is based in Greece, has spoken in 79 countries to millions of people.Heaven is Real But So is Hell is her first book release in America.
Naturally, people will be skeptical about Ryden’s claims. After all, most individuals who believe in the afterlife assume that it’s only possible to see it once a person perishes, however this mystic claims she’s seen both portions of the thereafter.
In describing her spiritual gift, Ryden said that it’s called “vision on the intellect.”
“That’s the theological term. It is a vision which is an interior vision,” she explained to TheBlaze. “I could close my eyes. I could turn my head left or right. When [God] gives a vision, He makes you understand what it means. Otherwise it’s of no use.”
Despite knowing what her reply might be, TheBlaze asked, “Is hell for real?” Ryden wasted no time in responding, noting that her visions confirm its existence.
“Yes, because I’ve had these visions given to me by Christ,” she said. “The reason why he gave me these vision is because he said that people do not believe that hell exists, nor do they believe that Satan exists.”
This lack of a belief in hell and Satan is dangerous, Ryden contends, also noting that the devil purposefully misleads people to assume that he doesn’t exist (after all, if there’s no hell, then there are no ramifications for personal actions and disobeying God’s will.
The mystic went on to describe what hell was like. Calling it an “enormous place,” she said that her vision was only a small portion of the underworld. In it, she recounted also seeing Satan, whom she described as being able to take on “any shape.” He allegedly spoke to her harshly, saying, “Now we have even worms coming to visit us.”
“I found myself like in a very low cave and I noticed that the ground was sticky like a mechanic kind of material,” Ryden continued. “The ground was like mechanic soil … Satan turned around and spat on the ground. Then he had some kind of lava in his hands and threw it on the souls.”
While this description was starling and some might argue unbelievable, the mystic told TheBlaze that it (at least the latter part) was likely symbolic and not literal. She also explained that some of the messages she receives are certainly literal, while others contain metaphors and symbols that God uses to send Ryden a message.
“This is symbolic. The soul goes into such agony because the agony comes from hopelessness. And when the person feels hopeless and cant do anything,” she said of Satan’s lava-throwing. “It is a place of darkness, of agony of hopelessness and dispair they know that they will never see God ever.”

Heaven, of course, was a very difference experience. She claims she saw this portion of the afterlife toward the beginning of her visions and that God, himself, called her there.
Ryden described it as a “beautiful place full of light, but not the sun.” The mystic said that the feeling she had in her soul was “unexplainable in words,” calling it an intense peace and knowledge that she was loved and protected by God.
While some will find solace in these descriptions, others will reject them as impossible. Ryden told TheBlaze that she wasn’t always a mystic. In fact, despite being Greek Orthodox, she described being “aloof” and enjoying life before the Lord first appeared to her in 1985.
“I had a good time in my life and then suddenly the Lord came. He sent first my guardian angel to show me how God [saw] my soul. I was horrified,” she said. “He made it clear to me that the things that I’ve done in the past were offending to God. I saw myself completely wretched.”
After the visions started coming, she was shocked. While Ryden didn’t think she was crazy, she had some serious doubts, describing herself as a skeptical person who would usually be taken aback by these scenarios. But while she sought another explanation for the visions, there simply wasn’t one.
“That was really my cross,” she said.
And it has been quite a cross to bear. In addition to heaven and hell, Ryden claims she saw the 9/11 attacks in a vision 10 years to the day before they unfolded (9/11/91). At the time, she thought the vision was symbolic, however she later learned that it was not.
“I thought it was symbolic, because sometimes the Lord speaks to me in metaphors,” she siad. “But when they do arrive the prophesies, in reality, I say aha — that was a prophesy. It is difficult to know [until after it happens].”
Ryden knows she has her detractors, but she brushes their criticisms off.
“It goes with the whole package deal. I know it’s a lot of people — it’s more people who believe in the — very few who do not, but the few are very loud,” she told TheBlaze.

Mar. 21, 2013 at 12:17pm@RANGER1965: Uh no. Satan can be omnipresent, using his demons to do his bidding everywhere. Satan does not actually do these things himself….this is why he has demons – millions of them.
In my prayer time not long ago and while in the Spirit praying, God gave me a vision of millions of more demons being let out on the earth, with a lot of them here in America since Obama became President. Obama is perpetuating evil in every word he speaks; in every action he performs. Obama is actually SURROUND BY MANY MANY DEMONS to protect him because SATAN IS USING HIM.
I cannot tell you how important it is that every single person on this earth PREPARE their souls for what is coming. IF YOU ARE NOT PRAYED UP AND FASTED UP, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE IT. This is why the Bible says that people’s hearts will fail them because of the fear that is coming upon the earth (heart attacks, paranoia, denial, etc.).
God uses HIS people to relay to the world HIS LOVE AND PROPHECIES TO PREPARE your souls and hearts. THERE IS SO MUCH DEMONIC ACTIVITY GOING ON RIGHT NOW, ON THE EARTH, it will be hard for you to even fathom, so I won’t bother, but know this: IF YOU ARE NOT BORN-AGAIN AND WALKING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT ***NOW***, IT WILL BE HARDER AND HARDER FOR YOU TO DO SO.
So, please just get down on your knees and ask God and Jesus to forgive you; to open your eyes to the truth, and to fill you with HIS spirit. Do it sincerely, AND IT WILL BE DONE.
Please DO NOT PUT THIS OFF

May. 8, 2013 at 4:32pmUnfortunately the media needs to call Vassula something so they use the word “mystic.” She, in fact, does not call herself anything, as she is very humble. Vassula simply states that she is just spreading the message that God asked her to. Heaven Is Real But So Is Hell is written to reduce apostasy and for those souls that are searching for God but do not know where to start.
“Those who have ears let them hear, those who do not want to hear let them not hear”, this is what God said to Vassula to tell this generation and to all the Churches.
I can testify that the True Life In God messages God has strengthened my faith in so many ways and in a very short time! The “fruit” is good! True Life In God is for all faiths to turn to Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and recognize our God as Thrice Holy.
Pray for discernment and give the book a chance with an open heart. IT WILL TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE! Praise be to our Father for His mercy and love that he gives to us sinners!

The truth is, however, that none of it represents what the bible teaches. It is not a system designed to reward good behavior and deter bad behavior. For those who can accept the word of God take note.
See Matthew 18:17″ But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto you as a heathen man and a tax collector. Note what this passage does not say it does not say to consult scripture it says to consult the Church. In other words if one fails to listen to the church throw them out.
Further, how does the Bible say we are to decide the “spirit of truth” and the “spirit of error”? Do you know? Is it by individually reading scripture? No! 1 John 4:6 which says, “We are of God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and he who is not of God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”. This is very powerful one should read and meditate on these words not just gloss over them.

Mar. 20, 2013 at 7:08pmDan_o 2 Peter 3:16, for example, tells us that there are some things in Scripture that are “hard to understand,” and that because of this, the “ignorant” twist these Scriptur es to “their own destruction.” Which of us could say that we are not ignorant of Scripture in at least one way or another? Which means that we are at risk of twisting the Scriptures to our own destruction. This is pretty serious business!
So, how do we get around this problem of our own ignorance? Does the Bible give us a clue? Indeed it does: Acts 8:31. Here the Ethiopian eunuch is reading Scripture and Philip comes up and asks him if he understands what he is reading. What does the eunuch say, He says, “How can I [understand the Scriptures] unless someone guides me.”
The Bible tells us that we need a guide – some authority other than ourselves – in order to be sure we don’t twist the Scriptures to our own destruction. Not that we can’t understand a lot of Scripture on our own, because we can. But, as the Bible itself tells us, there are things in the Bible that are indeed hard to understand. Things that are important enough that one could lose their salvation over. Which is why God gave us the Church.

Mar. 20, 2013 at 8:18pmBegreen, I agree (sort of), but you do it by teaching discernment not doubt. Who guides the guide in your example about the Ethiopian?
I do not claim to have perfect understanding of scripture, nor do I think any person or church does. However, we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind…this entails reading, studying, praying, and internalizing scripture and communing with God.
On the subject of further revelation, scripture says this:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17,)….i.e. nothing else is needed.
This woman is in error on at least one point. Satan is NOT the ruler of hell. He is the ruler of the air, or this world. He doesn’t want to be in hell either, so giving him this extra power and authority by picturing him throwing lava on lost souls is not biblical. Hell is where God’s wrath takes place, a total loss of hope and separation from His Glory.

Mar. 20, 2013 at 4:21pmWith all due respect, the Bible is a wonderfully entertaining story (and even better movie/mini series), BUT, it is simply that – a story. Moreover, it is a story that has been written by 1000′s of people (in piece meal (sp?) over 1000′s of years. I am not attacking Christianity or religion at all, just making an observation. I am an agnostic and strongly believe there is something more than us, but I cannot find a way to interpret the bible literally. The moral guidelines it puts forth are great, and I’ve found that I naturally hold most of those beliefs, but if the bible is actually true, than I could never be a follower of God. The Israelites and early Christians were the most violent, TRULY BRUTAL people that have ever been. Killing or torturing “in the name of God” is still KILLING and TORTURING.
I can’t help but see an incredibly gigantic hyposcrisy withing the faith (all of it’s forms worshipping God). I also find it hard to believe that a being as omnipotent as God would be so petty and narcissistic to create entire world solely to worship him. Wouldn’t it make more sense that he did it just to see what would happen, to entertain himself? I know the free will argument well. That, to me, also seems very “unchristian”. I have had numerous discussions with very devout christians. Freewill only explains so much. But does it make sense for God, who loves all to let so very many die every year by “acts of God” like weather?
I respect you,

Here she is with a few religions in Imam discussing her visions and encounters – now unless she is there to tell them of the One True Christ and to repent she, I do believe, is a false prophet!
Matthew 24:24
For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
Matthew 24:11
And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.
1 John 4:1
[ Test the Spirits ] Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 Peter 2:1
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.
Dont be lead astray from the Truth – we are to test the spirits to see if they are of God or of the world!

Mar. 20, 2013 at 3:43pm*Sigh* Sick of these people writing books like this. This is just another 23 minutes in hell. Honestly folks, Christians and non-christians alike, there is no place of fire and eternal suffering. Mainstream fear mongering churches of MEN have created this ideology (like Catholics and bible thumpers.) Jesus talks about a “lake of fire” at the final judgement (post millennial rule of Christ) in Revelations. It is an ANALOGY for a place of COMPLETE destruction. So much so that we are told that God will throw “Hades” (or sheol) which is “DEATH and DYING” into the lake of fire, for there will be no more death after this time period. Along with that He will throw souls into the lake of fire to be DESTROYED once and for all. The passages even describe this process as “the second death.” Those cast into the “lake of fire” will not burn eternally, their souls will be destroyed, never to return to life. The final and permanent death.
Moreover, Jesus tells us to NOT fear those who can harm and destroy the body… instead fear Him who can DESTROY THE SOUL. Only God has the right to destroy the continuity of the soul.
Read your bible and learn it… stop listening to other preachers tell you what you should believe. The bible is very clear to those who take the time to read it CAREFULLY and meditate on it. Don’t serve the Lord out of fear only, instead serve him as your Lord out of respect, love and understanding. Know who HE really is first.

“If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off ; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire,

Mar. 20, 2013 at 4:56pm@ begreen – be very careful who you follow or listen too – her website quotes leaders of different faiths that follow false gods. That state many are coming together under one “single stream”.
Check out whose testimony she has on her site quoting this “single stream” as if all religions are in tune with one another:
http://www.tlig.org/en/testimonies/other/mahathero/
But God tells us we shall have no other God but Him (His first commandment)
She is basically the Oprah of false prophets.

Mar. 20, 2013 at 6:53pmBeachmastermax you really need to use the KJV and a Strongs. Study the Word in depth and learn of Acrostics. An answer to a prophet complaining the rich live soft lives while the righteous suffered. The fat dripping off the spit flares up and vanishes in smoke, eternally gone. Forever. That was the answer, and the point. No endless suffering souls. What kind of heaven would it be if you saw an old relative bubbling up to the surface in the lake screaming in agony? Insanity. Such teaching is molech practice i.e., teaching fire and brimstone. This is not the future a loving God has planned for those who remain. Those who perish will be gone forever, no memory they ever existed will remain with the saved.

He That Is Not Against Us Is For Us
38And John answered him, saying, Teacher, we saw one casting out demons in your name, and he followed not us: and we forbade him, because he followed not us.
39But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man who shall do a miracle in my name, that can soon after speak evil of me.
40For he that is not against us is for us.

At the end of the Age. Tells me this is the Lake of fire. Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth? This does not sound like instant nothingness to me?
Luke 16:26 ‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27 “And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house – 28 for I have five brothers -in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets ; let them hear them.’ 30 “But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent !’ 31 “But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
I understand that Abe is in Hades here, in paradise and not Heaven, looking into torments and not the lake of fire, but Lasarus could see people he knew boiling and they could see him.
My Pastor has a Masters from WASU in English and Dallas Theo Seminary in Common Koinia Greek and Hebrew. He teaches that the lake of fire is a forever thing fro

Luke 16:23 “In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’
“for I am in agony in this flame.’”

Mar. 20, 2013 at 3:52pmFrom the Bible:
1 Corinthians 13:8 Love never fails ; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away ; if there are tongues, they will cease ; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part ; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.
The perfect is the completed cannon of scripture.

The New Testament books were written between 51-125AD. Was the canon closed then?
AD 367 The earliest extant list of the books of the NT, in exactly the number and order in which we presently have them, is written by Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria. Was it closed here?
AD 382 Council of Rome. Closed here?
AD 393 Council of Hippo. Closed here?
AD 397 Council of Carthage. How about here?
These 3 councils along with others, led by the Holy Spirit determined which books made up the Scriptural Canon. Since these councils were each led by a sitting Pope, they would be Catholic Councils.
The early Church judged which books were apostolic and which were not based on which had been handed down to them as apostolic by Church Tradition. Those books which had been widely handed down as apostolic were regarded as apostolic when the canon was settled in the late 300s.
There was a number of books not include, some of which are quoted from in the Bible we know today.
In 1,536 in his translation of the Bible from Greek into German, Martin Luther removed 4 N.T. books (Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation) and placed them in an appendix saying they were less than canonical. By what authority did he do this?
In 1,885 the Archbishop of Canterbury approved a Bible with 66 New Testament books. AKA: the Authorized King James Bible. According to Protestant tradition, it took 15 centuries to get the inspired word of God right. Is this where the Canon was closed?

Mar. 20, 2013 at 3:22pmI’ve seen helll too. Satan throws political poo up here. It’s name is obama. Currently he is unifying an enemy called the muslim brotherhood to cause discord around the World and to demonize America as some kind of instigator that is the source of their problems. How alinsky! He wants to take down the free World and unify it into a one World Government that must use force, fear and intimidation to maintain their control, once established. He calls is something like “his salvation” and a ‘collective’.
So far he is everything we were told he would be!

Mar. 20, 2013 at 3:08pmRegarding Heaven, the Apostle Paul wrote this:
Paul’s Vision
Corinthians 12:1 Boasting is necessary, though it is not profitable ; but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago -whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows -such a man was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know how such a man -whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows – 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is NOT PERMITTED to speak.
No man has gone to Heqaven and been allowed to come back and speak about it. If God would have allowed anyone to do so, it probably would have been Paul. so if you are reading books and stories about such things, you are being taken in.
