On Wednesday morning, President Barack Obama touched down in Israel and was greeted by a welcoming delegation from the host country. He was also greeted by a scathing op-ed from a columnist in one of the country’s popular papers.

“Why is US President Barack Obama coming to Israel today?” Caroline Glick — a former Israeli soldier with a Harvard degree — asks in a lengthy op-ed in the Jerusalem Post. And it’s not just a rhetorical device — she genuinely can’t figure it out. Her conclusion after trying: “The is truth we don’t know why Obama is coming to Israel. The Obama administration has not indicated where its Israel policy is going. And Obama’s Republican opposition is in complete disarray on foreign policy and not in any position to push him to reveal his plans.”

But it’s how she gets there that’s scathing. We’ve included some excerpts below.

Why is US President Barack Obama coming to Israel today? In 2008, then president George W. Bush came to celebrate Israel’s 60th Independence Day, and to reject Israeli requests for assistance in destroying Iran’s nuclear installations.

In 1996, then-president Bill Clinton came to Israel to help then-prime minister Shimon Peres’s electoral campaign against Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu.

It is possible that Obama is coming here in order to build up pro-Israel bonafides. But why would he bother? Obama won his reelection bid with the support of the overwhelming majority of American Jews. Their support vindicated his hostility toward Israel in his first term. He has nothing to prove.

Given that all of these are positions he has held throughout his presidency, the mystery surrounding his decision to come to Israel only grows. He didn’t need to come to Israel to rehash policies we already know.

Much of the coverage of Obama’s trip has focused on symbolism. For instance, the administration decided to boycott Ariel University by not inviting its students to attend Obama’s speech to students from all other universities that is set to take place on Thursday in Jerusalem. In boycotting Ariel, Obama’s behavior is substantively the same as that of Britain’s Association of University Teachers. In 2005 that body voted to boycott University of Haifa and Ben-Gurion University in the Negev. But while the AUT’s action was universally condemned, Obama’s decision to bar Israelis whose university is located in a city with 20,000 residents just because their school is located beyond the 1949 armistice lines has generated litte attention.

Then again, seeing as Obama’s snub of Ariel University is in keeping with the White House’s general war with anyone who disputes its view that Judea and Samaria are Arab lands, the lack of outrage at his outrageous behavior makes sense. It doesn’t represent a departure from his positions in his first term.

The only revealing aspect of Obama’s itinerary is his decision to on the one hand bypass Israel’s elected representatives by spurning the invitation to speak before the Knesset; and on the other hand to address a handpicked audience of university students – an audience grossly overpopulated by unelectable, radical leftists.

Clearly he is not attempting to use the opportunity of addressing this audience to express contrition for his first term’s policies.

Obama will not use his speech before Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s most outspoken critics to express remorse over the hostility with which he treated Israel’s leader for the past four years. He will not admit that his decision to coerce Israel into suspending Jewish property rights in Judea and Samaria in his first term gave the PLO justification for refusing to meet with or negotiate with the Israeli government.

So since he doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong, and he intends to continue the same policies in his second term, why did he decide to come to Israel? And why is he addressing, and so seeking to empower the radical, unelectable Left?

There are two possible policies Obama would want to empower Israel’s radical, unelectable Left in order to advance. First, he could be strengthening these forces to help them pressure the government to make concessions to the Palestinians in order to convince the Palestinian Authority to renew negotiations and accept an Israeli peace offer. This leaves another glaring possibility. Through the radical Left, Obama may intend to foment a pressure campaign to force the government to withdraw unilaterally from all or parts of Judea and Samaria, as Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005. If this is Obama’s actual policy goal, it would represent a complete Europeanization of US policy toward Israel.

The is truth we don’t know why Obama is coming to Israel. The Obama administration has not indicated where its Israel policy is going. And Obama’s Republican opposition is in complete disarray on foreign policy and not in any position to push him to reveal his plans.

What we can say with certainty is that the administration that supports the “democratically elected” Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and did so much to clear all obstacles to its election, is snubbing the democratically elected Israeli government, and indeed, Israel’s elected officials in general.

  Actually, I think his trip is timed to make it look like he is reaching out to Israel just as he is trying to look like he is reaching out to the Republicans. His policy positions haven’t changed, and they won’t. This has something to do with 2014 and trying to win the House back so that he can move his radical agenda even further to the left.

Mr. Obama is in Israel to advance Palestinian and Muslim influence over-all, while dissuading Israel from defending itself from an Iranian nuclear attack. He wants to stop an Israeli preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear bomb making facilities. He will leverage this by holding back American military support in advanced anti-missile technology and dangle our new “space plane” as a bargaining chip to buttress Israeli strength and calm the general fears of the Jewish state. That’s it. Now you know.

Some still really do not understand who Dear Leader is.

He is the most charismatic as well as the most powerful man on earth right now! He knows how to send signals to the Left just like he did when he visited Cairo U and we know what transpired after that. If allowed to speak to the Leftists in Israel, he will cause division just like he divides here everyday and is never called on it. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth and is the best chess player in the world of the political craft today. Just when you think he is screwed he comes out smelling like a rose…Benghazi didn’t stop him and nothing will. He is after a major peace agreement in Isreal. But first he must have the people rise up there and turn up the heat. How can Isreal strike Iran when chaos is boiling within its own borders by its own people. The world is heating up all over the place. One world governance, econ, faith and currency is the goal.

  CHIEFGEORGE, I find myself on a rare occasion to have to disagree with only one thing that you said. There is nothing charismatic at all about 0bama. That is just repeating the spoon feeding that the media tries to feed us, as well some of the BS that even some of the Republican politicians repeat. Every time I watch him make a speech or give an interview he obviously tries to irritate certain factions of this country and now is doing the same in Israel.   Good morning guys….Obama is just…being Obama. Although his actions seem obscure, he always has specific reasons for his moves. The fate of Israel is one facet of this world situation that he would love to have control of. He’s beginning his global push, and he is ‘testing the waters’.
  The fact he excluded some particular coservative nvoices from his address, speaks volumes…..he is going to broach some controversial aspects of the Israeli- U.S. relationship, and needs to limit opposition, so he can actually get it said.

Why should your explanation be correct? At what point have these two ever cooperated on anything? Why is Obama not even speaking before the Knesset? I too wonder why Obama is in Israel now. He has won his second term and no longer needs the American Jewish vote so those people are expendable. He is not there to inform the Muslim world or the world in general that he will back Israel against any and all Muslim aggression because the world knows that his support of the Muslim Brotherhood is absolute.

His disdain for Israel and Mr. Netanyahu has been duly noted by those who pay attention and the Israelis do pay attention.

It will be interesting to hear what he says and more interesting to listen for what he does not say as he roams the country making speeches.

  And your assertion that Israel could be destroyed is one thing that is absolutely guaranteed NOT to happen.
  
  I understand that you have closed yourself off from understanding reality. But at least you can watch as events unfold and then compare them to what the Bible says is going to happen. The problem is that by the time the prophecies in the fourteenth chapter of Zechariah are fulfilled, it will likely be far too late for you.
  
  In any event, Zechariah reveals God’s word to us in chapter 14. He tells us that when Jesus returns to earth (at the end of the seven-year Tribulation), Jesus will arrive first at the Mount of Olives. When His feet touch the mountain, it will split in two.
  
  Immediately upon Jesus’ arrival, he will begin to fight against all of the armies from all the nations of the earth who will be in the process at attacking Jerusalem. Jesus will make short work of these attackers; the war will be over almost instantly. And then, Jesus will begin His reign as King of earth from His throne in Jerusalem.

Really? I don’t need a degree from Harvard to figure this out. Obama’s there to advance his own interests. That means playing nice with Israel when it helps him, being firm with them when it doesn’t. Kudos to the Palestinians. It’s what he (and as Glick’s post pointed out when referring to Bush and Clinton, all presidents) do. Obama is Israel’s friend – until the country does something against his interests. That’s how it’s always worked with politicians.

  We have never seen a master politician like our dear leader who just so happens to be the most powerful man on the planet at this moment in time. His arrival comes in the midst of great upheavals in the social, economic, religious aspects of human history. Oprah asked could he be the one? I believe he is the ONE indeed and have for some time. I predicted his 1st and 2nd coronations. He is not an idiot, he is not misguided, he is not lacking intelligence, to the contrary he is brilliant just like Oprah the false teacher exclaimed. Like lightening, he has come to enlighten the rest of us cave dwellers so that we may step with him into the NWO he has planned for us all. He will eventually tire of dissent, he will eventually show us what he is all about. DHS buys 1bil rounds, 2700 Assault Vehicles, drones, etc. Not to mention this all flys in the face of an epic change at the vatican. A pope who embraces socialism cannot be a good thing.
