Dem Rep. Makes WILDLY Inaccurate Claim About Number of Children Killed With So-Called ‘Assault Weapons’

FILE – In this June 7, 2012 file photo, Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y. speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill. Credit: AP
Attempting to show how huge of a mistake it was to drop the ban on so-called “assault weapons” from the Senate’s gun control bill, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) on MSNBC Thursday claimed “millions of kids” are dying at the hands of these weapons and Congress is failing to act.
Rangel blamed the National Rifle Association, politics and money for the gun ban’s failure.
“I’m ashamed to admit it but its politics and its money, The NRA has taken this position, there is no reason, there is no foundation. There is no hunter that needs automatic military weapons to enjoy the culture of going hunting,” Rangel began. “But you know it’s really basically the absence of the voices of good people. I cannot believe that politicians are afraid of the NRA.”
He went on: “We’re talking about millions of kids dying — being shot down by assault weapons, were talking about handguns easier in the inner cities, to get these guns in the inner cities, than to get computers. This is not just a political issue, it’s a moral issue and so when we condemn the NRA we should not ignore the fact that a lot of people that have taken moral positions have been solid on this big one.”
Watch his comments via MSNBC below:
Rangel’s assertion is so ridiculously false, it’s hard to really put it into perspective. But let’s try.
According to FBI data, just 358 people — of all ages — were killed with “rifles” in 2010. In fact, more people were killed by hands and feet (745), knifes (1,704) and shotguns (373) than with rifles that same year. As Fox Nation points out, the total number of gun homicides in 2011 was 8,583, still exponentially lower than Rangel’s estimation of murders involving so-called “assault weapons” alone.
Using the 2011 total gun-related murder rate, it would take more than 116 years for one million people to be killed by a firearm. Additionally, it would take more than 2,793 years for one million people to be killed with rifles, or what Rangel calls “assault weapons,” according to the 2010 FBI data.
Now, that does not lessen the impact of such a horrific tragedy like the Newtown massacre, however, the United States will never be able to have a meaningful debate about guns as long as such blatant lies are being used to demonize firearms.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on March 21, 2013 at 7:41pmThis just proves that people are stupid and we are all doomed. If we as a society keep electing these old inept fools to office time after time after time, because we are too stupid to know any better or too lazy to give a darn, then we are truly, epically, FUBAR. God won’t help us unless we are at least willing to help ourselves first. FIRE THESE PROGRESSIVES and get an amendment to the Constitution enacting term limits, banning lobbying, and capping congressional / senate pay to no more than what a pencil pushing General makes.

What is the acceptable number of children killed in back yard swimming pools? The actual number is way more than with AR-15′s. I say fill them all in!

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:52pmAnd here are a two other parts of Rangel’s statement that were blatantly false or misleading:
“There is no hunter that needs automatic military weapons…”
No hunter does use automatic military weapons. Those are already illegal and have been since the 1930s. So-called “assault weapons” are not automatic weapons anyway, they are simply run-of-the-mill semi-automatic weapons which have been labeled with this misleading and pejorative term. Besides, this tired, old “hunter argument” is irrelevant anyway since the Second Amendment isn’t about hunters, it’s about the right of self-protection against tyranny.
“…easier in the inner cities, to get these guns in the inner cities, than to get computers.”
Well, for one thing, the average computer probably costs more than the average gun. Second, I doubt that with Best Buys and other stores everywhere that it’s literally harder to find and obtain a computer than it is to find and obtain a gun, if you discount the difference in price. Finally, many large cities such as Chicago have already severely restricted the sales or public possession of guns so anyone obtaining them must already be doing so illegally. Last I checked, computers were still legal in inner cities (shhh, don’t tell Mayor Bloomberg!) so I’d think they would be easier to obtain on-the-whole than a black market gun. Anyway, how would any new gun laws change activities which are already being carried out in violation of existing laws?

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:45pmSo Charlie lies about the number of kids killed with assault rifles and the numbers on his income taxes. I’m sure they are just an honest mistake. He is not sorry for the lies and tax returns he is just sorry he got caught.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:44pmOf the many things that are wrong with his comments, there are 2 that stick out to me the most:
1) democrats will use any figure to play with peoples emotions no matter how ridiculous it is.
2) the thought that the 2nd amendment was about hunting is extremely ignorant. When the framers of the constitution were drafting the bill of rights they were preserving the right and the power of the people to protect themselves and their families from those who wish to do them harm and from a tyrannical government.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:01pmWhy should a Democrat tell the truth when the press says nothing when they lie? A dirty old man handing out candy to children, will get removed off the streets, but a Democrat telling a lie, gets a free pass? These regulations kill people? These proposed regulations would make law abiding citizens like defenseless animals? No, don’t blame the people that create the gun free zones, lets blame law abiding citizens?
Not on our watch? We are going to teach our kids gun safety, and make them proud to grow up and be a good guy with a gun? We are not going to let domestic enemies of the US Constitution raise our children to be afraid of guns?
