Find Out What Experts Say You Need to Do to Prepare for an Emergency

With reality television shows like “Doomsday Preppers” sweeping the nation, it is clear that a broad contingent of Americans see merit in embracing the benefits of emergency preparedness. Whether it be learning how to grow or preserve your own food, or investing in precious metals and other resources needed to prevail in the event disaster strikes, the ways in which one can prepare him or herself are many.

To discuss the ins and outs of emergency preparedness, Glenn Beck brought on special guests Mark Hyland, CEO of Food Insurance, Tim Howard, President of USA Emergency Broadcasting Network, Barbara Salsbury, author of “Preparedness Principles,” and Major Steve Sheridan, an Iraq War combat veteran and author of “Waging War on Debt” to cover topics ranging from food conservation to protecting your finances in the event of an emergency.

With extreme events happening around the world and the ever-present threat of terrorist attacks, Beck said “we are more vulnerable now than ever before.”

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

One would have to be very wary of marauders if traveling – one needs to be aware of marauders when traveling even without an emergency. It would be best to hunker down where your surrounding are familiar, rather than go places where one might be detained. One will not be able to trust anyone that comes to one’s home unless one is sure of their character. When one is out of their element, sometimes it is more difficult to think clearly; however , one does whatever one has to to address the exigency of the occasion. With all this in mind, if your Second Amendment Rights are taken away then everyone will put in harm’s way – imagine an atomic bomb – Hopefully, I pray not. But, then again, who prays to God, over there???

I would suggest doing a little traveling this summer around your own area.. away from people.. that is our plan. Look for a bug out location.. in the forest or woods.. where most people won’t think to go! If bugging out isn’t necessary than yes, by all means hunker down. But if the SHTF then we are out of here! Keep your vehicles filled with gas at all times.. your bug out materials where they are ready to go.. and leave! It all depends on the situation!. Can you protect your family against marauders?

I foresee a total financial and economical collapse taking us into a very deep and long depression with hyper inflation. I see nothing being done to prevent that and frankly, I don’t think there is much that an prevent it.

To survive long term I think will require being part of a group that can feed and protect itself because all the purchased prepper supplies people have now will eventually be used up and there may be no buying more or any way to receive more, or next to no one will be able to afford to buy more. And if you don’t have an ongoing supply of water and have the ability to make it potable in bulk, I don’t think there will be many of us that will survive long term.

I suspect most of us will lose our source of electricity at least at times due to brownouts or blackouts. And without electric power, not much works today. And if the dollar goes the route of a total collapse, we barter where we are with what we have and for what we need.

I think the preppers that think they are going to bug out to somewhere and then live off the land more or less aren’t going to make it unless the location is already set up and capable of supporting them and they are part of a group there. I think that a lot of the buggin’ out stuff is more bravado than good planning.

I say talk to neighbors, form a group, start growing and preserving food. Find a source of water other than your present source and learn how to make it potable without the use of electricity.

An explanation of who I am, then honest questions.

I grew up on a family farm. I know the diff. between a weed and tomato plant. I’ve raised, then butchered chickens, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats. Hunted, dressed, and butchered game birds, deer, bear. I don’t have military training, but I do have an amount of intelligence and common sense.

I have a layered bugout plan. 1st, a Jeep loaded with camp and survival gear. When forced from that, a full backpack with shelter, food, few clothes, waterpure gear, mostly ammo, weapons. Broken down farther, shoulder hung waist belt with web gear pouches, thigh platforms for rifle mags and pistol, spare ammo, small tarp, etc. Anything that can’t be carried from the Jeep, would be buried for future retrieval.

My plan does not include trying to survive on my own in the woods, though that’s where I’d be heading to, running through, if TSHTF. But because of choices I’ve made in life, I don’t have a home/land to fortify and survive in.

My questions… If I, or someone like me, were to walk up to your front gate/door, showing no aggression, what kind of welcome would I receive? Would it be possible for you to allow a stranger to remain offering what services they could?

Any honest answer would be appreciated. I’d like an indicator of what to expect. Thank you in advance.

Rich-Even though it is difficult sometimes, I still believe that the vast majority of people are good and more than willing to help out another person. When I read other posts and concerns about people being able to prepare for a disruption in our way of life I can’t help but feel very blessed to own a very large piece of property in the country with ponds stocked with fish, fruit trees and gardens and a lot of farm land.
I really doubt that god blessed me with these things so that I could some day selfishly live large while others starve. Actually I believe that the Bible speaks a lot about hospitality. Short answer, of course I will be willing to help others. I am a Christian.

I believe we should “look behind the curtain” at the entire Preparation for Disaster business. Does someone know something that we ordinary, little joe sixpacks don’t know? That’s a question for the paranoids here to figure out. Next, Ask yourself if you are willing to eat the family dog or cat or the people next door — seems that most have an aversion to cannibalism for some reason, but survival is survival. As for water supplies, that is the key to survival; without water you will die. Period. I like the designs of many concrete homes in the West Indies, which have a huge cistern (like a swimming pool) encapsulated under the house. Sometimes as much as 30,000 gallons of collected rain water. If you are a handyman, you can buy a could of 5,000 water bladders surplus and cover them in the back yard for use in collecting rain water. As for guns, well there are enough opinions to go around the world so we won’t even talk about whether your gun is bigger than my gun, etc. Finally, do we even want to THINK about what happens after TSHTF? I mean, in the area of government, local and regional warlords, lynch mobs, marauders, crazies. Read a bunch of survivalist and apocalyptic novels; read Covington’s books and The Survivalist series up to the science fiction part. Be aware of your daily surroundings. When all else fails and you are out of options, take a Painless Exit into the next world — always have overdose drugs on hand and ready to use.

First Off- no drug overdose for the easy way out. We do not go quietly into the night.

      1) No one person can survive on their own. Work with your friends: spread the cost of food, water purification systems, medical supplies, and defensive weapons. If you live in a area where water is scarce then “Freeze Dried Food” is out of the question. Think Protein.

      2) Have a Rally point and a defendable location. Make plans to gather everyone. Remember some may be at work and others at home. Think of transportation in advance. **You have 3 days to exit any Major City before “All Hell Breaks Loose” – The first 3 days they will loot (The Bling,) but then they get hungry, and by then the Food in Stores are gone. This is when they go door to door and then start spreading out to the suburbs. They will Rape and Murder you for Food, Water, Medical Supplies, and you Defensive Weapons.

      3) Exercise: Prepare to hump out your gear to a defendable location.

      4) Calm, this will be a very stressful situation for you, your wife, and children. Move with authority and give no quarter. Safety of your Family is priority, not your “Bling” – jewelry, electronics,…,etc.

      5) do not rely on the government to come and save you.

Closing – this is not Japan and you will not see people calmly standing in line for food and water. This is America and sadly there are a lot of Animals that live here that do not respect life.

United we Stand, Divided we Fail!!!

Personally I think that if your plan is stand by yourself and survive on your own for the rest of your life, you are doomed for failure and your life will not be a long one. I believe that not only do you need to prepare yourself and family, but you need to also find like minded individuals to do the same and who you can join up with. Being prepared doesn’t mean that you have to believe in the end of civilization, it is just a good idea because of natural disasters if nothing else. Hurricanes, earth quakes, solar flares, there are allot of things that can disrupt services and food distribution for months. You are not some kind of crazy if you want to be prepared “just in case”.

Fortunately for me I don’t have to waste my money on these Charlatans ! I have 2 years of storage by simply stocking up on everyday canned goods and Dehydrating Frozen Vegetables myself. Very easy to do just purchase the Mylar Bags and Oxygen Absorbers off of Amazon, Fill them with dehydrated food put in some absorbers and seal them. I put them in sealed 5 gal buckets. They will last for 20 years. Also store rice, Instant Potatoes, Beans, and pasta this way and have plenty of spices and sauce mixes on hand. The only thing I purchased from these companies is Dehydrated Milk, Butter, Cheese. I’m good to go. The only thing I need a source for is medical supplies like antibiotics and such.

SocialistSlayer: You can get antibiotics from online animal supply stores. Just look under antibiotics for birds and fish. Medical supplies you can order from any of the online stores with the exception of IV fluids and large volume sterile irrigation solutions (i.e. sterile water and sterile normal saline); though, you can get the smaller amounts 250cc. And as far as text books, the special forces medical handbook is a great resource. Hope this helps. Pray.

I like SGT Rock’s reply to this post. We do our shoping at Costco, Sam’s Club, and at the week end farmer’s markets. Why buy a prepper company’s bucket of rice, when you can buy 100 lbs bags of it at Costco, 5-gal painters buckets at a home store and pressure cans of nitrogen at the local welding supply store. You put the rice into the buckets, you squirt in the nitrogen, your assistant slaps on the lid after running a bead of silicone seal in the sealing groove. Tape it all after that and you have a 5 gal pail of rice which will last for 25 years (longer than I will at my age) that costs a total of less than $10 and 15 minutes of work time. Look up nitrogen preserving and remember you can do pasta, all kinds of their stuff; you get perfectly good mason jars of produce at the local farmers marker — bargain with the farmer for a flat of 24 or 48 and get them at least 1/2 price. As for ammo, the thugs haven’t started checking names on reloading supplies. Just saying that reloading, especially 12 ga is a no brainer. High velocity crossbows are easy to find, and deadly. Again, as I have said before, water is your schwerpunkt … make sure you figure out the water question. You don’t really need 1-gallon a day like the alarmists tell you, but you need, medically proven, amounts of 16 to 24 ounces per 24 hours depending upon body size and weight and health.

I put in a large garden every year and my wife cans most of it. we have over 775 gal of purified water and filters that can purify 10 gal a day. Very rural homested with Cows, Chickens, and sheep.

So I also get milk eggs and wool. Probably right around 2-3 years worth of stored foods and have a high wall around my property with remote cameras .

Very well armed with everything from Barretts .50 sniper rifles to 380 fps crossbows. under the houses w have made a bomb shelter out of reinforced Concrete with rebar. It will filter air down to 5 microns. Total cost was probably cheap because we did all the work ourselves.

Have over 15,000 rounds of ammo and a couple hundred bolts for the bows. My brothers are my neighbors so it is a gated community.

I have read alot about prepping over the years and one thing that stuck with me was the following:
In times of stress and emergencies, you might not be able to cook a meal or even want to….just like in “good times” we don’t always want to eat out or always stay home and cook a big meal. So I stock MRE’s for meals on the-go, Mountain House and Wise for something warm but still relatively quick and easy, and #10 cans of food and baking supplies for long term sustainability. I also stock up on our favorite canned goods, energy bars, etc. When it comes to water, I use the same premise:
Datrex water packs for my bug-out bag and ease of use, canned water( good for 30 years) for long term, and water drums no larger than 15 gallon so I am able to move them if needed. Ofcourse every bug-out-bag we have contains a Lifestraw water filter. Glenn is right- PREPARE!

The government wants you to be prepared for an emergency, but when you do, you get labeled a “domestic terrorist”. They have terrorism on the brain way too much. Homeland Security is too busy watching white, middle class, working folks buying big boxes at Cheerios at Sams Club rather than actual threats. It’s part of the natural progression of power. First the enemy was outside the country, now the enemy is within our country and now the enemy is its citizens. The very citizens that elected this authoritarian government.

One of the characteristics of the LDS church that I have come to appreciate is the organizational aspect.

The hierarchy is well respected (due to our belief in Priesthood authority). While many would disagree with that authority, which is understandable, to a ‘Mormon’ it is paramount.

Many non-members (my wife included) marvel at the ability of the church to organize and mobilize.

Being part of such a large, organized group gives a feeling of security.

We may be asked by leaders to gather, to impart our goods to others, or to simply serve each other.

Those with medical skills will serve. So will mechanical minded people, cooks and protectors.

I know there area my other groups who will do the same, and I encourage you to join with them.

No one can make it on their own.

Again, I do not wish to discuss the doctrinal merits of LDS theology, I am only commenting that I am grateful for the organization and ‘looking after the flock’ mentality of the church.

When Rita passed through Texas (after Katrina) we received a call to make sure we had a 72 hour kit, batteries, etc. from our home teachers. Each then reported back to the Bishop. Within a half an hour, all members were contacted. We received no such call from my wife’s church.

She slept better that night knowing we were looked after.

Join a group of like minded people so you can share resources and protect yourself from the KIBAs of the world.

Including a book on identifying edible plants, you can also find books on where to locate medicinal plants in the wild. It’s amazing what common ‘weeds’ can provide in minor medical care.

      Same here!

I like to think of storing foods that I might not have enough water to cook with like MRE’s. I store rice but I also keep three 55gal drums of water on hand and a dozen or so 5gal jugs to cook it if needed. If natural gas from the provider is not working or disrupted by and earthquake in my area, I switch to my portable propane tanks. Solar system is covered but could be better. Think recharageable batteries for your flashlights. Candles are short term but helpful for comfort. Short wave radio is needed so you can find out what is going on out there.

You may want to consider the newer TOTM – Tailored Operational Training Meal. They are a bit smaller, easier to transport, and have much of the same essential survival components as an MRE. This food is used in a real survival event as opposed to sitting around and waiing for something to happen. Mobility and knowledge are essential ingredients during survival. As a retired flyer, I have kept all of my small survival weatherproof booklets along with my survival gear. While I think that much of the “prepper thing” goes overboard, there are things happening that certainly give one great pause. It is always a good idea to have some preparedness in the event of a crisis such as hurricane Sandy or Katrina. With this current Administration, I could believe almost anything could happen; every day is a crisis. I am still pondering over Congressman Timothy Huelscamp’s questioning this week of the Department of Homeland Security refusal to answer questions regarding its recent purchase of huge amounts of weapons( 1.6 billion rounds of ammo and 7000 AR rifles) found on “Hotwire.com”.. enough ammo to fight the Iraq war for 27 years????

So KIBA, what you are saying is that you will have no food or water ? If so that means you plan to steal mine ? Well bring it on honey, I’m stocked, will be in good health and on my home ground. I’m Always willing to add a Ruger and AR to my collection………you see, I know how much ammo one alone can carry and when that’s gone you are Shot out of luck.

If you want to really be prepared, it takes more than a raider’s mentality. Why do you think Indians, Africans, and at one time Anglos all lived in tribes ? Guns are to defend your lives and assets…but if you plan on raiding to live, then you are planning a fire fight daily or weekly. Bad odds.

Noneof… Yeah, I hope for his sake you are right, Anyone can be forced out of his holdout. But….plan ahead means thinking about a stronghold and defending against raiders…….hungry lost folks are dangerous and the cities may just plain explode outward.

I guess I’m kinda sensitive to it as even now a guy a short ways away had a problem with some crazed city fools thinking a farm is easy free food. There was also those two kids who tried to raid a farm and wound up dead recently. Raiders will come out in a worst case scene……hungry and maybe not so bright.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding out there… If you’ve listened to Glenn Beck on radio or watched him on TV for any length of time you’d know that he’s been talking about being prepared for a long long time (i.e., well before 2008). Over time his advice on the topic has been consistent and non-prescriptive. Finally, the message carries no force or even advocacy of force that you do or don’t do anything. If you feel like being prepared for hard times is foolish, don’t prepare. If you feel like the suggestions for how to prepare are foolish, don’t prepare that way. In any case, just be prepared to live with the decisions you make. Is that libertarian enough for everyone?

They used to be called survivalists. I remember a magazine did a story about survivalists in the 80′s. One of them was a hot chick who looked tough. I remember thinking it would be a great to hunker down in a bunker with her for a month or two!
At least 10 years ago FEMA told everybody the water supply would be easy for any kind of terrorist to compromise so everyone should store water. I have tried to get friends to store water and they are in denial. Anyone who doesn’t have food and water to get by for at least a month is a fool. At this point I’m thinking 6 months might be better.

As a friend of my husband pointed out, he knows his property well enough to run through it barefoot on a moonless night and know exactly when to step over the prickly pear.

There are many things involved with survival in a long term situation. If you strategy is to primarily hunt, good luck with that, not only will game eventually become scarce, but initially every yahoo with a gun will be out there gunning for that same deer. Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket so to speak.

Then there is the issue of whether you decide to show strength with walls and cameras (which would make you stand out as a high value target eventually, after gang alliances of hundreds have been formed) or to hide in plain sight (using camouflage to not be found in the first place and forgo ostentatious security measures) and be ready to do without if necessary (losing your supplies and preferred location).

What makes PERSONAL preparadness so challenging is fostering your ability to think outside the box while the pressure is not on to mix reason with emotions and tailoring it to your situation. A city dweller has different considerations than someone with a well and septic out in the sticks.

Don’t just have one plan, have several.

I love the idea of food insurance, wise foods and other shelf stable foodstuffs, but I simply cannot afford the packages they sell. My family is trying to prepare a buffer against food shortages by stocking up on foods we can get at Costco. Large bags of rice, dried beans, sugar and flour. It’s going to make for some bland supper times, but throw in some game meat and we will survive. I wish these companies had more affordable foods, or at least affordable options to acquire packages.

Pick from a number of companies out their and get some TVP (textured vegetable protein)…they come in ham, taco, beef, chicken, sausage, etc. flavors…they can perk the rest up. Add to that some flour (or wheat and a grinder) along with some shortening and you can make some tortillas and practice your mexican meals.

We keep a good stock of MREs. I know there is something of a shortage of these on the civilian market right now though. My son had been taking one with him each time he went hunting. For a while we were able to restock on them easily and cheap. Lately, we’ve convinced him to take other foods with him on his hunting trips. Seasonally we have always canned fresh veggies from the garden, and still have shelves full with those jars, in the pantry as well as in the basement.

People always say they’re gonns bug out somewhere. Where?? On to someone’s else land? You’ll get shot. On to limited-space public land? Good luck with that.

Buy some land out in the country and start growing your own food, NOW!

Blindleader72 there is no reason that staples such as flour, rice and beans need to be bland. You can store spices as well. Start looking for and trying new recipes that use the basics now. I search the web for good new recipes and try and cook from the basics as much as possible. It’s better for your family then the prepared foods available today and costs way less. Recently I used Youtube to learn how to make my own tortillas for burritos and quesadillas it was amazingly easy and used very few ingredients. the bonus was that the family loved them and they cost about a quarter to make.

Well Glenn, people in the libertarian movement have been at the tip of the spear on this thing and it had nothing to do with the products you peddle. Ron Paul said in the 2008 debates that we are on a path towards complete collapse and he said it again in the nationally televised debates in 2012. Look at the #1 cause – Federal Reserve. We talk about individualism and responsibility but apparently that is too “isolationist” and “kooky” for you and the GOP

I’ve dealt with Weiss, Foodsdirect, Honeyville Farms, ETC. So far I prefer Honeyville farms for all the basics, but buy from various others for actual meals (such as rice & chicken)…be very careful when you look at these “days/servings/meals” that they advertise…check the calories per serving & multiply that by 3 (breakfast/lunch/dinner) and see if you hit the 2000 calories an adult needs on a daily basis…if not, then you will find yourself eating 2-4 servings per meal and greatly reducing the number of days your food will last.

Also, you need to realize you need a gallon of water a day to survive…now add to that the water needed to rehydrate and cook this type of food.

Also, if you cannot store it at around 60 degrees, the 25 year shelf life is greatly reduced…and some are only good for 3-5 years.

I think the stuff is great…buy it and forget it…just know the in’s and out’s before you spend the money.

For example…At Food Insurances Web site, they offer a “Top Sellers Kit” for $299.99 which will, and I quote, “will feed one adult, 3 meals per day, for 5 weeks.”…3X5X7 = 105 meals. The breakdown of the food enclosed in the kit = 107 servings…which sounds right…until you notice that each serving is about 250 calories. So, after the 3rd or 4th day of trying to live in a stressful situation on 750 calories a day, you’ll either be dead, dying, or just to weak to eat the remaining 93 meals all at once to get some strength back.

Like I said…it’s not the be all and end all…you have to go into it with your eyes open.

1 case of #10 canned freeze dried sweet corn is $119.99 from Food Insurance
1 case of #10 canned freeze dries sweet corn from Honeyville Farms is $96.89

Food Insurance ships for free after you buy $1000.00
Honeyville ships you 1 can or 1 truckload for only $4.99

Food Insurance IMHO is deceptive in its descriptions and way overpriced.

If you don’t know why this is happening or think it’s all Obama, I suggest you read about the federal reserve. It was no accident that the federal reserve and the IRS came into existence at the same time. If you don’t know by now what the central bankers have done, I doubt it will mean anything to you at this point.

But you should so you will know who to blame when the wheels come off. Fiat currencies always die. Money is created to match principle debt only, not the interest paid by debtors. Not to get to deep but this has the effect of tilting the table in the bankers direction eventually extracting all the real wealth created by your labor. So, all the “money” you make is actually debt. And all the money the bankers make is real. In the crash of 2008, after the gas run up, you stopped producing as much so they needed to inject more debt. As they create more and more money/debt, they cannot extract enough through your labor and this devalues the currency further hurting their ability to extract real wealth from you.

It seems as though the bankers are realizing they cannot get the engine going again. When the federal reserve and the IRS (AKA bankers enforcement agency) started, they new that their Ponzi scheme had an expiration date and I think we are nearing that day. The bankers need it to collapse and we need it to collapse. They will want to start it up again. We have to stop them. Somehow.

Make no mistake, when all is said and done. Freedom is at stake!

You can buy a 55 gal drum for water from Emergency Essentials with all the trimmings for $100.00…for another $15 you can get vial of chems that will keep the water pure for 5 years without rotating it. For $200.00 you can buy enough rice & beans to last you a year easily. For $150.00 you can buy a Volcano Stove that can cook with wood/charcoal/propane.

I think the people in New Jersey living in their fancy, rich beach houses, screaming “We’re all going to die! Don’t leave us!” could have afforded this small amount. You know what else I think? That the moment they move back into their newly built homes…they’ll completely forget Sandy and fail once more to prepare for an emergency.

Holy cognitive dissonance batman, you are right! How dare these capitalists sell there wares to people who want and need them. The nerve!

And you are also right that food will not help you when zombies are banging on your door but lead will.

Good luck to you, future zombie!

Godfather, you must live on an island where there are no hurricanes, tornado’s, earthquakes, come to think of it you must live in Utopia! I’m not so lucky, you see I live on the gulf coast where hurricanes have a habit of hitting. I have been with out power for three (3) weeks, that’s right, I was without power, no frig, no ice maker, no gas. Since being without power for that long I learned to prepare, and I was born and raised in the South. I have not one but two generators, gas stored, food that can be prepared with only having to heat water and I now have solar panels for cheap lights, I learned to can (regular and pressure) and have foods that I have learned to grow myself and fish that my husband has caught now canned. I also have gold, silver, guns, ammo, and jeans that cost more than a $130.00 that’s right, I must be a poor, Bible thump’n, gun tote’n follower of Glenn Beck or I could be someone that the neighbors come to to ask advise on how they can do what we have done because now when the power goes out, I have a frig, air conditioner, Ice, fresh water, all the food that I can eat and Satellite TV, dsl for internet but please don’t worry about me and mine, signed Southern Comfort.

You know, I gotta thank Glen Beck. His gig got my wife’s attention to the whole thing. She thought I was kinda crazy making sure my scene be secure……and I might be crazy, but at least now she’s crazy right along with me !

Hey guys, look at how the military digs in. Many centuries of lessons learned.
