Cass Sunstein Goes After Glenn Beck in New Book; Compares Attacks to Orwells Two Minutes Hate

President Barack Obama’s former “regulatory czar” Cass Sunstein is going after one of his harshest critics, Glenn Beck, in a new book titled, “Simpler: The Future of Government.” In it, he claims Beck became obsessed with him and compares his attacks on his record and views to “Two Minutes Hate” found in George Orwell’s “1984.”

For anyone who hasn’t read Orwell’s classic, “Two Minutes Hate” is a daily activity during which Party members in Oceania must watch video depicting the Party’s enemies as they mindlessly express their hatred for them. See the video below:

Sunstein, a former law professor at Harvard and University of Chicago, claims that Beck “developed what appeared to be a kind of obsession with me.” The so-called “obsession” began when he was nominated to take over the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in 2009. He earned the titled of “the most dangerous man in America” from Beck.

Mother Jones’ Tim Murphy provides an excerpt from Sunstein’s yet-to-be released book, in which he claims Beck’s attacks resulted in death threats against him:

In Orwell’s 1984, there is a brilliant, powerful, and frightening scene of the “Two Minutes Hate,” in which party members must watch a film depicting national enemies. (As it happens, the leading enemy is named Goldstein.) At times, Beck’s attacks on me, featuring my smiling face, were not entirely unlike those scenes. A new website was created, stopsunstein.com, filled with inflammatory quotations, some taken out of context to suggest that I endorsed views that I rejected and was merely describing.

I began to receive a lot of hate mail, including death threats, at my unlisted home address. One of them stated, “If I were you I would resign immediately. A well-paid individual, who is armed, knows where you live.”

In the end, Sunstein made it through the confirmation process and got the go ahead from the Senate with a 57-40 vote. However, he ended up resigning in August of last year to become Harvard’s Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law and Director of the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy.

You are however a punk if you create unsubstantiated claims about what an individual may or may not do in carrying out the duties of their office. So how’s about a story which fact checks how dangerous he really was during his time in the position.

      Cass Sunstein is just b/tt hurt that he got painted & any further career as a Democrat bureaucrat is much more problematic for him & senior Democrats.

      What was said of him is true. The pictures of NAZI ballots showing their nudging techniques with reviews of his book “Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness” hammered him.

      Every Talk show host in America covered his antics. He is a radioactive hot potato & he is pi$$ed about it.

      If The Democrats lose in 2014 & 2016, it is going to get much worse for him. His ideology will be properly framed. He won’t work in the U.S. government again. Maybe he can move to Holland and get a job euthanizing anyone old enough to join Dutch equivalent of AARP.

      Glenn is always 99.9% correct in his research and commentary. The other .1% is that Glenn doesn’t always give you the entire story – just the headline sometimes, and it leaves you to believe something else.

      it was speaking out AGAINST a government that was becoming increasingly LESS FREE and restrictive. this was the time that the socialist medical system was being put into place..this was the time that the parties in Great Britain were descending into a battle between communism and socialism and consolidation of power under the government regardless of party.
      the Parliament took control of the medical system, the education system, and the means of manufacturing and distribution all under the guise of “rebuilding.”

      Cass wants to be known for the quality of his ideas, not his personality or political affiliation. I’ve read some of his work and it’s good… so good that I’ve wondered… “What if this guy were working on the side of good instead of socialism?” Conservatives could learn a thing or two from Sunstein. But they don’t… they want the world to be more simple and understandable… which is why the Dems always “parse” them out and destroy them… Small steps people… small steps.

      The Leadership in DC for the R’s is weak and willing to take small steps in the Wrong Direction – choosing to wait for some Home Run. They think each at bat is a potential Home Run – which it ain’t. I’m NOT saying compromise… but Conservatives can’t often tell a success from a failure.

      The Socialists know this. Why can’t the free market Conservatives learn?

      Read “Nudge” and learn… how to do it, how to stop it, how to recognize it.

      And stop whining… or you become easy prey for STM and others.

      Cass Sunstein has quality ideals? They end the same place as Europe. His methods might vary but he ends up in the same place. Europe is a bad place. If you take a vacation in Europe 20 years from now, it won’t be because Europe has the same socialist laws.

      I hate smoking. But I don’t want to use Cass Sunstein’s method to get rid of it.

      If Europe is bad & Cass is taking us their, that what ideals of his are good. His methods? We celebrate someone’s devious methods for doing something to us that we don’t want to happen?

      It’s not as insidious as it sounds (although Sunstein will twist it to become such). Really it just means the factors these economists try to study are less strictly “supply and demand” kinds of RATIONAL variables, and more emotional, social, and cognitive kinds of factors. It’s a mishmash of sociology and economics (sociology overlaps anyway, as an attempt to explain human behaviors), and DOES have valid lines of inquiry as a discipline. You’re right that it would be EASY to subvert for a Marxist or Keynesian, however.

    “Sunstein has long-advocated β€œnudging” Americans in the direction they really ought to go, by defining their choices and making the less desirable ones more inconvenient. No one is forcing you to do anything…just helping to guide your decisions.”
    He was well versed on how to nudge people and make them do things without realizing it. Being aligned with the UN, by way of his wife, he had the backing to do a lot of things.

    Cass Sunstein deserves the criticism he gets. He believed, along with Obama, that his Harvard degree somehow made him superior to the many millions of Americans who live their lives by common sense and not Ivy League foolishness every day.

    Beck was right to single this idiot out…his appointment was what gave the ACA it’s additional multitude of now written (and extremely odious) regulations. His department under his direction has likely had more impact on the nation than any other official in this despotic regime during the first term…of that, Beck was entirely correct. Sucks when un elected dangerous progressive ideologue hacks cannot remain anonymous eh Cass ? You and your criminal cabal will never get away with it as long as one person knowing the truth and is unafraid of telling the truth still draws breath in a free nation.

    The man thinks that marriage should no longer exist. He sees our earnings as belonging to the government because without the government, there would be no opportunities to earn money. He believes animals should have the right to sue. He thinks the first amendment should be “reformulated” to encourage speech between people who don’t agree. What does that mean? Lock them in a room? He thinks non governmental groups should infiltrate people who believe in conspiracies. He is a total weirdo. Maybe I should worry about him putting me in his book as a hater. He certainly had his freedom of speech but not everyone happens to agree with his theories either.

    Sorry Cass, but Beck has freedom of speech just like you do and if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, Beck calls it a duck. Wonder if you and Beck compared death threats who would have the most? I am betting Beck would win on that due to your radical followers.
