New Book Reveals the Moment a Secret Service Agent ‘Almost Shot Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’

A new book by longtime national security writer Marc Ambinder and D.B. Grady reveals that a Secret Service agent almost shot Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a visit to New York City during the George W. Bush administration.
The incident — detailed in “Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry” and excerpted on The Atlantic website under the headline “How the Secret Service Almost Shot Mahmoud Ahmadinejad” — happened in September 2006 outside Ahmadinejad’s NYC hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
“A U.S. Secret Service agent, in an apparent accident, discharged his shotgun as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was loading his motorcade at the InterContinental Hotel yesterday,” a presidential daily briefing describing the incident said.
Apparently the agent was adjusting a side-mounted shotgun on a car in the dictator’s motorcade when he accidentally pulled the trigger.
“Everyone just stopped,” an official with knowledge of the incident told the authors in the book. “The Iranians looked at us and we looked at the Iranians. The agent began to apologize. Ahmadinejad just turned his head and got into his car.”
That official was initially scared that Ahmadinejad, who was on his way to deliver a speech at the United Nations — would use the incident to embarrass the U.S. in front of the international community.
He didn’t.
“The Iranians told no one. Their silence led several White House aides to begin to see Ahmadinejad in a new light. Here was evidence that maybe Iran was acting strategically, and therefore cautiously,” the excerpt concludes.

Somehow the Libs never seem to get it. Go figure that?

After the first taking of the embassy that was short lived and only one Marine was taken hostage for a brief period, we began to study Iran. Shortly after the second taking with the extended holding of more hostages I had my first NCO Board. Many of the questions asked related to Iran. But, please tell me all about it. You obviously know so much more.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 10:01amSOY, I do not hate you nor anybody. I do detest at times your attitude of trying to lecture to so many here when you disagree with our opinions. Not facts, opinions. As for our history with Iran, I still can’t believe the number of people here who say that we, the United States played a role with the installation of the Shah. The Russians played a major part of having the Shah replace his own father back during WWII so that they would have a leader who showed favor to Russian influence. You have heard of the Big Three Conference in Tehran during WWII, haven’t you? That would never have occurred without Russian influence. Later in the ’50s an internal coup almost ousted the Shah, but with the assistance of American and British intelligence agents the Shah was re-installed after going into hiding for a brief period. Yeah, I do know how brutal the Shah was on his people who wanted his ouster and the take over of the nation with Muslim domination. I had a soldier who worked for me in Germany in the early ’80s who had lived in Iran during the Shah’s rule. His father was a retired Air Force officer who was an electrical engineer working on a contract there. He told me that the Shah had Huey and Cobra gun ships shoot up rioting crowds right in Tehran. This was not at the behest of the U.S. either. I agree that he needed to go, but the current government has mowed down demonstrators in Iran too. Do you want to blame that on us too?

“SAVAK was the secret police, domestic security and intelligence service established by Iran’s Mohammad Reza Shah with the help of the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (the CIA). SAVAK operated from 1957 to 1979, when the Pahlavi dynasty was overthrown. SAVAK has been described as Iran’s “most hated and feared institution” prior to the revolution of 1979 because of its practice of torturing and executing opponents of the Pahlavi regime.”

Yes, we as in this nation were trying to maintain ourselves on good terms with a nation that provided us with cheap oil. I do know that. But, as I stated above, I also know from a person who had first hand observations of how the Shah treated his people. Remember, the Shah had assistance to begin with from the Soviet Union. Yeah, I’m sure they taught him to treat his people with kid gloves from the very beginning. This nation has dealt with almost all nations of the world in one way or another. Just because we had dealings with Iran during times of their trouble does in no way make us responsible for that nation’s internal problems. We were not running the country at the time, nor were we playing total puppeteer as SOY and others would have us believe. Yeah, we have a history or being associated with despot leaders of the world as well as working hand in hand with many who are not. The world will not and has not ever followed our Constitution.

The Soviet Union did this to the countries of eastern Europe from the 1950′s to the 1980′s too…
Czechoslovakia…..Poland……East Berlin (STASI) all come to mind….
Are you saying that you agree with what the Soviet Union did to the people of East Berlin?
What’s the difference between the Soviet Union’s establishment of East Berlin’s STASI vs. the CIA’s establishment of the Shah’s SAVAK police in Iran??
You can’t rationalize the existence of one without rationalizing the existence of the other……

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 1:59pmRegardless of whether you think CIA was a lot involved or a little involved in overthrowing a democratically elected leader and installing a dictator…..
If the people of a country completely reject the presence of another country, even in the form of an embassy – that is their right to do so. Just so you know, the students who took the embassy were willing to negotiate. What they wanted was the Shah of Iran returned in order to face charges (seems reasonable for a former dictator), un-freeze Iranian assets (why were they frozen?), and the USA to formally apologize for meddling in the internal affairs of Iran. There is something wrong with this country when we would rather have more people killed and remain hostages than to do any of those things.
A lot of people in this country expect people in other countries to get over it. That is an ignorant attiude. It is easy to tell someone to get over it after you do something to them than it is to get over something yourself when someone does something wrong to you. A true Christian should understand every country makes mistakes and when mistakes are made, there are serious consequences

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:31pmSOY, You are right there with the rest of the “hate the USA” crowd then. Yep, it just had to be the fault of this country. After all, you have so many times in the past tried to tell me that it was the actions of this country that actually installed the Shah into power in Iran. I was truly surprised to see that was not a part of your last response. Oddly enough all of the countries on this planet have dealings with one another and in various ways. We were not trying to rule Iran, but we did have some favor with the Shah and were involved somewhat in their oil trade. Even though the major portion of any oil traded went to Russia, not the U.S. There were also a large number of other countries involved. The attacks on the U.S. Embassy were done to give the appearance that the U.S. was weaker than many perceived world wide at the time. As for the timing, that was perfect, They knew who and what Jimmy Carter was. As I said before, the Shah was a despot and had to go, and I am glad that it was the Iranian people who forced him out. In his exile he lived in Egypt, Morocco, and Mexico. It was that idiot Carter who let him come to this country for medical treatment and problems from that treatment lead to his extended stay. This is also thought to be by many why the extremist factions of Iran attacked the Embassy. Eventually, the Shah was pushed out of the U.S. and eventually moved to Panama. Continued…

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:42pmSOY, Continued.
The Shah once again sought asylum in Egypt and was granted that. A short time later in 1980 he died and was given a State Funeral in Egypt. Once this happened, the thought was that the hostages may be released, but that was not to happen. Carter was his own prisoner in the White House in the eyes of the world, and the Iranians played with that power. This whole action may never have happened had Carter not allowed the Shah to enter the U.S. for medical treatment. But, it is odd that the people of Iran did not attack either Embassies of Morocco or Egypt. Not sure if Mexico or Panama had embassies there and frankly, I am not going to bother to look it up. As I said earlier, there were a number of countries involved but in the eyes of the leaders of the newly forming Iranian government the U.S. was the perfect target in their eyes. Oh yeah SOY, The Shah was long gone well before the attack on our embassy and it was an emerging Muslim run government that allowed the attacks.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:50pmSOY, by the way, just what democratically elected leader are you talking about. The coup in the fifties involved an appointed bureaucrat in an underling position. Granted, I applaud the people of Iran for rising up to oust the Shah, but you have some truly skewed views as to what happened. The taking of the embassy and holding the 52 hostages for those years did more damage to their nation in the long run. Again, I must point out, that their now elected government treats the people just as badly as the Shah. But, you go ahead and keep blaming and hating the U.S. Naturally, in your mind it was all our fault, right? One other thing, don’t ever try to lecture me on this subject again, I was around when all of this happened right around us. You rely on about as much written BS as THE_JERK does when he blames the Jews for all that ails this planet. You can take your time line lectures and shove them….
