O, Canada? Obama ‘Comparing’ Israeli-Palestinian Relations to…U.S. and Canada

At his press conference Thursday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, President Barack Obama chose an unusual example to drive home his belief that peace between Israelis and Palestinians is possible.
In his effort to convince the local populations, who have been in a decades-old (and some might even say millennia-old) conflict, Obama invoked perhaps the most peaceful neighbors on the planet, that is the U.S. and Canada.
“We can’t afford to have our kids in bed sleeping and suddenly a rocket comes through the roof, but my argument is even though both sides may have areas of strong disagreement, may be engaging in activities the other side considers to be a breach of good faith, we have to push through those things to try to get to an agreement,” Obama said.
“Because if we get an agreement then it will be very clear what the nature of that agreement is,” he added.
Obama described his vision: “There will be a sovereign Palestinian state, a sovereign Jewish state of Israel and those two states can, I think, will be able to deal with each other the same way all states do.”
And then he invoked this example: “I mean, you know, the United States and Canada has arguments once in a while, but they’re not the nature of arguments that can’t be solved diplomatically.”
Abbas didn’t react to Obama’s U.S.-Canada line. But prominent Israeli journalist Chemi Shalev did:
OK, so now he’s comparing Israel-Palestine to US-Canada… #obamainisrael
— Chemi Shalev (@ChemiShalev) March 21, 2013
But Israeli officials have long tried to describe the conflict in terms Americans can more easily relate to. For example, Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren told this to an MSNBC anchor who was questioning the lethality of missiles terror groups were launching at Israel during the November hostilities:
“You have the equivalent of what would be about 170 million Americans under bomb shelters. If Hamas continues to escalate we will take the necessary and legitimate measures to defend our citizens,” Oren said then.
Obama’s main message during the press conference with Abbas was, “We cannot give up on the search for peace no matter how hard it is.”
“I absolutely believe that it is still possible, but I think it is very difficult,” he also said.
Obama criticized Israel’s continued building of housing for Jews in the West Bank. “We do not consider continued settlement activity to be constructive, to be appropriate, to be something that can advance the cause of peace,” Obama said.
However, he did add this: “…the politics there are complex and I recognize that is not an issue that’s going to be solved immediately, it’s not going to be solved overnight.”
Abbas said, “…we require the Israeli government to stop settlements in order to discuss all our issues and their concerns.”
Obama said he would like to see an independent, viable and contiguous Palestinian state alongside the Jewish state of Israel so that the two nations can enjoy self-determination, security and peace.
Earlier in Ramallah, 200-300 angry protesters demonstrated against Obama in the city’s central square. According to the Times of Israel, the slogans shouted included: “We don’t want anything peaceful, only bullets and missiles,” and, “Go home you devil, we don’t want to see Americans here.”

WOW! A little selective history there. All that proves is that hatred of Jews by Christians and others, firstly, goes back 2000 years, and in addition was often baseless and petty in nature or at the very least was built upon lies or doctrine spread by either the Church or other individuals in power. But even with all that there’s nothing in that list to suggest that that is all of Jewish history. I could list every single European war, crusade, revolution, raid etc. and claim that Europe is an inherently warlike continent using no more evidence than you did.
Here’s some real facts Jerk and your own list will back this up. Prior to the 20th century all Jew-hatred was based purely on religious reasons. The evidence? For one, Jews who converted or those who were descended from converts were rarely grouped together with the Jews. The main exceptions to this rule are all in countries that had passed “conversion or exile” decrees and therefore had no religious Jews left. Secondly, the Catholic Church, as well as other Christian figures like Martin Luther, were the primary individuals speaking against Jews, often accusing them of religious offenses. Luther’s own hatred of the Jews was based purely on the fact that reforming the Church didn’t lead to mass Jewish conversion and his own writings prove it.
So I contend that all anti-Judaism prior to the late 19th century targeted Jews solely because they weren’t Christian.

Ignorant, arrogant, and uninformed? Israel does allow private carry in case you forgot. Second, why should Israel tear down a wall that doesn’t exist. The “wall” that your propaganda sources showed you is actually a fence with electronic sensors. Small areas were built as walls to prevent sniper fire, but that was only done where residential areas would be at risk otherwise. But more importantly, that fence has saved hundreds if not thousands of lives since being built. But of course, the great, wise, and moral…oh wait, you don’t believe in morality…AUserName knows better than everyone else how to pacify extremists and protect one’s citizens.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 11:21amObama, is out of his frigging tree, or is he? Many times he speaks out of both sides of his mouth. United States and Canada? Obama, having great affinity for the Muslims, if not one himself, profoundly knows that the Muslims hate Israel and the Israeli people. If the Muslims, particularly those in the Middle East, meaning the Palestinians and the surrounding countries, they would drive every Israeli into the Mediterranean Sea.
Not so with the heart of the Israeli towards the Palestinians and the rest of the Muslims. The Israeli’s, contrary to what you hear from the main stream media, have tried to broker a peace with the Palestinians, but that has never been successful, as the surrounding Muslim nations refuse to recognize Israel as a sovereign state, and many times Israel has made concessions to Palestine, only to have it blow up in Israel’s face.
I believe Obama is well aware of these particulars, but just as Obama deals falsely with the Republican Congressional members and is not a man of his word on the domestic scene, so would he deceitfully deal with those overseas, and most particularly the Israeli’s whom Obama has shown his true colors in the past – most recently with the appointments of both Hagel and Brennan, who both have either favored Islam or acted adversely towards Israel.
In any particular dealing of Obama, domestic or foreign, beware. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Obama is an enemy of America and Israel.

Last I checked, Canaanites didn’t hate the Jews, they just had no common ground and were fighting over scarce resources and land. Pharaoh’s Egypt merely saw a group of foreigners that he could exploit for his own benefit and the Israelites likely were neither the first nor the last to suffer such a fate. Just look at African slavery of the 17th and 18th centuries.
As for “making trouble”, would you care to elaborate? Was Abraham NOT allowing his herds to graze on neighbors’ crops, “making trouble”? Or perhaps him and his immediate descendents digging wells only to have others come and try to claim them as their own? And that’s only when they didn’t just plug up the wells outright. Or how about when Abraham came to the aid of the four kings who were having war waged against them by five kings?

You, sir speak as a fool. Been to Israel three times, and have had the luxury of traving to many places that the average tourist does not, including into homes and businesses. As been said elsewhere, the Palestinians have their own businesses and in many respects can do their own thing, and are profoundly treated better in Israel than in other Arab nations. Was a wall built and check points installed? Absolutely, and rightly so. In the late 90′s and some since then, civilian buses and restaurants and wedding gatherings were blown up on a regular basis by Palestinian suicide bombers, and they will not be found in Heaven either. Also, after the protective wall and check points, you don’t see bombings, do you?
You are safer in Israel than in America. Why? Because Israel is not “politically correct” like we are in America. Israel does want needs to be done in any facet of their living and lifestyle. You will not see any Muslim crazies hijacking Israel airplanes and flying them into the Knesset.

You know what I’ve noticed? You frequently cite the most liberal left wing opinion pieces the world has to offer in what are clearly left-wing, liberal sources, but because they criticize Israel their opinions are worth their weight in gold. Why is it you always have to go to left-wing sources like NYT and HaAretz to find news critical of Israel? You wouldn’t trust those sources for any other information so why on this one topic do you chose such clearly biased sources? Is there not one conservative, right-wing source critical of Israel? Or are you as left-wing as your sources?

Excuses?! All I did was explain that conflict between two opposing cultures forced to share limited resources is not only expected, it’s inevitable. Wherever two cultures have met and competed over resources there has always been conflict between them. You speak as though the Canaanites never fought with anyone other than the Israelites. The Canaanites weren’t even one nation, they were at least seven, all fighting and competing with one another. Throw in the Philistines, the Moabites, Amalek, Ammon, and Edom and you’ve got nothing short of a free-for-all. Hardly unique, special, or even unusual. Even Egypt itself was once divided into two waring factions and they hardly lacked for anything.

Oh the irony. After all your talk about how evil, oppressive, and racist the Talmud is, the moment someone uses it to criticize Israel it suddenly becomes a valid source.
But let’s analyze some of the claims your source mentions:
“The Jewish Agency delegation headed by Golda Meir (Meirson) ignored a German offer to allow Jews to emigrate to other countries for $250 a head, and the Zionists made no effort to influence the United States and the 32 other countries attending the conference to allow immigration of German and Austrian Jews.”
Firstly, $250 in 1938 is $3,986.13 in today’s money. Do the math Jerk. Just to save the Jews of Germany alone, a minority of those who perished in the Holocaust, would have bankrupted the Agency before they even managed to pay for half of them. We’re not talking about a few hundred hostages here, were talking about hundreds of thousands of German citizens. We’re talking hundreds of millions in today’s dollars.
One a different note however, I find it unusual that I’m unable to verify this claim at all. I have even tried tracing the source your author cites (notably omitting the title, author, and page) with no success. Quite simply, I can find no verification for any of these claims and the author’s one citation isn’t even complete. On top of that, the article or whatever it is, assuming it exists was written in 1976, almost 3 decades later.

Israel has every right to blockade Gaza and i sunder no obligation to provide humanitarian relief. Your source reports this with a spin to make it seem like Israel is being aggressive. Posted on March 23, 2013 at 3:32pmAs one who has trusted in the death of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross as payment for my sins and His literal, bodily resurrection by God the Father, I find the_jerk’s comments regarding the Jewish people infuriating. While I believe the Words of Jesus, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh to the Father but by me.”, I also recall His statement in Matt. 5:17 and 18 that He had NOT come to destroy, but to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, which would not only include promises of judgement upon Israel but also of future blessing and a future kingdom for them. Correct me if I am wrong, Jerk, but you apparently belong to that branch of Christianity that believes in the erroneous doctrine of Replacement Theology–that because of the rejection of Jesus as Messiah by the Jewish religious leadership of His day, that God has forever turned His back upon Israel as a nation; and transferred His promises to the Church. This would make God a liar, since He promised them a world-wide, permanent return to their land in such passages as Deut. 30:1-10, Isa. 11:11-16, 43:1-6; Jer. 50:4, 5; Ezekiel 34: 11-31, 36:1-37:28; Amos 9:11-15; and Zechariah chapters 12-14. This has yet to happen; since only a remnant returned from the Babylonian captivity, mostly from the southern kingdom; and they were scattered again in A.D. 70. Jesus, weeping over Jerusalem states, “Ye shall not see Me henceforth till ye shall say, ‘Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord

Posted on March 23, 2013 at 4:26pmNote that Jesus did not use the word “never” ; He said, “Until”. Also, the Apostle Paul, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, makes the case in Romans chapters 9-11 that while Israel has been set aside due to her rejection of her Messiah, there is still a remnant of Jews, himself included, who have come to faith in Jesus. He further asks the question, “Have they [the Jews] stumbled so as to fall?”; then answers, “God forbid: but rather through their fall, salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them [the Jews] to jealousy. For if the fall of them be the riches of the world and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles, how much more their fullness?. . .For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be but life from the dead ?” He also warns these Gentile believers who have been allowed to share “of the root and the fatness of the olive tree” not to “boast against the branches”. Paul reminds the gentile believers that they are held by the Root–not the root by them. He goes on to tell them that the setting aside of the Jewish people was because of unbelief and the gentiles stand only by their faith and warns them not to be high-minded but “Fear: for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest He spare not thee.” Then, Paul lets these gentile believers know that not only can God replace those broken natural branches, but He also INTENDS to graft them in again.

Posted on March 23, 2013 at 5:09pmPaul then tells these gentile believers in Romans 11:25, “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, UNTIL the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.” He also quotes excerpts from Jeremiah 31:31-37 which includes a promise to take away their [Israel's] sins. Next, he tells these gentiles in verses 28-32, “As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief, even so have these also not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all.” Paul finally bursts into a hymn of praise to God for His wisdom and power. I have written three long entries to try to establish from Scripture that God’s promises to Israel have NOT and never will be abrogated. He promised them more of that land in the mideast than they have ever held. Yes the so-called Palestinians (actually Arabs) want to claim that land because in the 600′s or 700′s AD, Arab muslims conquered the territory and their Koran holds that land once conquered in the name of Allah can NEVER revert to non-muslims. Interestingly enough, this comes as no surprise to God–read Ezekiel

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 10:04amThe headline is purposely misleading.
Mr. Obama did not compare the existing Israeli/Palestinian situation to the US-Canadian relationship, but as an ideal toward which the two countries can strive toward. Correctly pointing out that even in an ideal situation that Canadians and Americans enjoy there are still disputes. The softwood lumber imports from Canada to the US is one which comes to mind.
The Blaze appears to be intent to creating controversy where none exists. This was evident yesterday with the completely wrong and bogus Rabbi Yosef “creating” a special blessing story and today with this bit of misleading reporting.

Yes. Did the Pharaoh kill the sniveling little liar, and his ho wife, once he found out? No. Who was the magnanimous one who permitted the lying clan to leave, with their ill-gotten wealth? The Pharaoh.
Who do the Jews hold up as the good guy? Abram. Who is the real, benevolent, good guy? The Pharaoh. Jews have never changed. Anything for power and wealth. That’s their scriptural message to their offspring.

Yeah and those same accords called for the Palestinian Authority to dismantle all terrorist groups and they instead funded them, honored them in person, and praised the names of terrorists on TV. By the way, they were also supposed to “educate for peace” not build summer camps for turning children into suicide bombers.
Why don’t you educate yourself before you speak. Here’s a short film about Oslo and it’s outcomes:

Are you seriously allergic to any true facts. After Nuremberg the Zionist flag did NOT become an official flag of Germany. Rather, German Jews were prohibited from flying the German National flag or the new Nazi Flag of the Third Reich, thus denying them the right to be Germans. They were “permitted” to fly the Zionist flag. That’s not an alliance you ignoramus that a carefully planned ploy designed to send a clear and simple message: “The Jews are foreigners passing themselves off as Germans and are to be denied all rights as citizens.” It would be similar to us passing a law saying that Mexicans, even those with citizenship, are forbidden to fly the US flag.

Still using rhetoric instead of facts? Come back when you want to make an actual argument instead of just throwing words around. I’ve been to Israel and guess what, Palestinians still own their businesses. In fact, it was in order to “appease” the Palestinians that the Israeli government, under international pressure, stole ISRAELI businesses, homes, and property to give them to the Palestinians, whose response was to take these “gifts” and burn them to the ground.
And as for “ghettos”, Nazi ghettos were always walled-off, segregated portions of major cities where both Jews and non-Jews had lived prior. Unlike when Jordan controlled the Judea-Samaria region and enforced the Green Line precisely even if it meant cutting towns, cities, and families in half while prohibiting all crossings (interesting how you never mentioned that), Israel specifically avoids cutting through residential areas with their border enforcement and allows unlimited crossing for law-abiding individuals provided they go through inspection. In real ghettos Jerk, you could find people starving in the streets.
Your comparison is a non-factual approach meant to produce a purely emotional and irrational response, more commonly know as propaganda. Your master Goebbels taught you well it seems. Funny how you like to accuse Israel of learning from Nazis when it’s you yourself who emulates them perfectly.

No doubt you’ve made the requisite Jewish pilgrimage to “The Stolen Land.” And, no doubt you continue to have a purposeful reading comprehension problem. Backed by whom exactly? And to your point, which Palestinian homes and businesses were taken and when? Are you talking about the ones that were abandoned in 1948? What exactly was Israel supposed to do with them? Allow them to slowly decay while Israel is trying to absorb close to a million new refugees many without a penny to their name? My great-grandfather owned a house and a butcher shop in Germany before he was forced to leave the country. Do you see me blowing up German restaurants and shopping malls? Germany hasn’t repaid any of its victims but rather simply pays reparations to Israel as an attempt to pay back what they took. The Palestinians meanwhile, demand that the Jews be subjected to forced relocations as a means of gaining revenge. Vengeance never leads to peace so don’t expect any solutions by that road.

Posted on March 22, 2013 at 10:00am@ Jihad Jerk: Yes, the Jews were offered other locations and rejected them. Know why? Because the Land of Israel is the ancestral Jewish homeland (as in Judea), and the Jews understood that the only place they would have a legitimate claim to land is in the land of Israel. Note that no other people extant have ever claimed this land as their homeland, or established an independent nation with a capitol there. That includes Palestinian Arabs and Muslims. So, even though you like to pick your starting point for history with the Muslim conquests, the British Mandate, 1948 or 1967, you are completely wrong to claim this is not the Jewish national homeland. I go back as far as recorded history will allow, and that means the land belongs to the Jewish Nation, which was a nation long before it became a religion. And it became a religion only out of necessity once they had been exhiled from their own land. You can pick any starting point in history you like, Jihad Jerk, but so can the Jews. Try to deal.
