The 10 GOP Congressmen Who Voted Against Ryan’s Budget Today (And the One Dem Who Accidentally Voted for It!)
The Republican-controlled House on Thursday voted 221-207 to pass Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan’s 2014 budget plan.
Rep. Ryan’s budget calls for a repeal of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (i.e. “Obamacare”), cutting taxes, and reduction in the rate of government spending. According to Ryan’s “The Path To Prosperity: A Responsible Balanced Budget,” this will balance the budget in about 10 years.
“Ryan said Thursday morning that Congress needs to get on the glide path to balance to avoid a serious debt crisis, and blamed President Obama for failing to provide leadership on this issue,” The Hill notes.
“He gets his NCAA bracket in on time, but still no budget,” Rep. Ryan said Thursday, taking a dig at the president’s apparent priorities.
“This is the fourth time in five years,” Ryan said, referring to the White House’s tardiness in submitting its budgets. “He set a new record this year, two months with no plan while we have trillion dollar deficits and a debt crisis on the horizon.”
“They have time for the attacks, but no time to offer serious solutions,” he added.
And although the Ryan plan passed the House with overwhelming support from Republicans, there were 10 who felt that they couldn’t give it an “Aye” vote.
These are the 10 Republicans who voted “Nay”:
10. Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.)
9. Rep. Paul Broun (Ga.)
“The latest budget proposal by Representative Paul D. Ryan, called ‘The Path to Prosperity,’ is anything but. It fails to seriously address runaway government spending,” Rep. Broun said in a New York Times op-ed. “I cannot vote for something that would trick the American people into thinking that Congress is fixing Washington’s spending problem, when in actuality we’d just be allowing it to continue without end.”
“Just reducing growth in spending does almost nothing. We have to dig deeper and make profound cuts now. We cannot continue to assume that future Congresses will do our dirty work for us,” he adds.
8. Rep. Rick Crawford (Ark.)
“I applaud Representative Ryan’s budget resolution that aims to balance the budget, but I cannot support non-binding resolutions that will be changed with each new Congress. I voted against the Republican non-binding budget resolution to bring attention to Congress’s continued reliance on policies that have clearly failed and to call on my colleagues to focus instead on passing permanent spending controls,” Rep. Crawford said.
“During each of the past three decades, Congress has made numerous attempts to control spending with non-binding budget resolutions and deficit control acts yet debt has skyrocketed.
“It is time for Congress to get serious about the debt crisis and economic growth and pass permanent spending controls that will put America on a genuine path to prosperity,” he adds.
7. Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.)
6. Rep. Chris Gibson (N.Y.)
5. Rep. Phil Gingrey (Ga.)
4. Rep. Joe Heck (Nev.)
“There is a dire need for us to reduce spending, address the major drivers of our debt, and grow the economy by balancing the budget. I have voted to reduce spending, I have voted to repeal and replace Obamacare, and I have co-sponsored and voted for a Balanced Budget Amendment,” Rep. Heck said in a statement released after the vote.
“But the policy proposals contained in this non-binding resolution indicate the priorities of this budget, and when those proposals disproportionately affect [my] state, my vote indicates my priority and that priority is Nevada,” he added.
3. Rep. Walter Jones (N.C.)
2. Rep. Tom Massie (Ky.)
“The federal government’s spending is out of control, and this plan actually increases spending,” Rep. Massie said after the vote. “Paul Ryan’s proposed House budget would increase government spending at nearly twice the rate of inflation. Our country is deep in debt, and it is irresponsible to increase spending at this rate.”
“Congress has the power of the purse but refuses to spend responsibly. In the past three weeks, House members voted to continue funding Obamacare, and voted for three separate spending bills that will increase our national debt.
“If Congressmen would just vote according to their campaign promises, we could fix the spending problem before it’s too late,” he adds.
1. Rep. David McKinley (W.Va.)
“The House Republican budget is a serious plan that recognizes the danger of the federal government’s unsustainable spending,” Congressman McKinley said in a statement.
He adds that although Rep. Ryan’s “plan is better than other options put forward,” it fails to address “issues of vital importance,” including coal ash legislation and reform to foreign aid.
“Once each side passes its respective budget, House and Senate representatives should come together at the negotiating table in a bipartisan fashion,” he concludes.
“At that time I hope Republicans and Democrats agree on a compromise that addresses the unsustainable spending by the federal government and provides fiscal certainty for our families and businesses. Once a bipartisan compromise is achieved I will evaluate it for my support,” he adds.
–
Not a single Democrat voted for the bill in the end. However, there was one Democrat who voted in favor initially, but it was only temporary as it appears it was by accident. They quickly changed their vote to a “Nay.
“It’s entirely likely that a Democrat accidentally voted in favor, then realized his or her error and switched it,” the Washington Post reports.
“That’s not uncommon. What with all the votes members have to keep straight, and clumsiness when using that vote-card machine (swipe of a card, then hit a red button for no, green for yes, and yellow for present) mistakes can happen. Or, perhaps, the ‘yes’ vote had a very rapid change of heart,” the report adds.
As of this writing, it’s unclear which Democrat made the “Aye” mistake.
We have contacted each of the 10 congressmen for comment on their “Nay” vote. Half have responded so far and we’ll update this article if the other half ever get back to us.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 4:02pmWhen are the American people going to understand once and for all, that Obama DOES NOT WANT a responsible budget; does not want to balance the budget; does not want accountability to the American people; does not want to do the right thing. HE HATES AMERICA AND AMERICANS because HE IS NOT AN AMERICAN, at least NOT a true American who actually LOVES his country.
There is NOTHING Obama could say or do that would EVER make me believe his spit-forked tongue. HE IS THE LIAR-IN-CHIEF and continues to lie, even abroad. He is a worthless politicians without moral character or fortitude and he smiles at himself every time he sees his reflection. IT IS A SIGN OF THE DEMONS THAT RESIDE ALL AROUND HIM.
As long as you continue to watch this liar on TV, listen to him, instead of changing the station, he will continue to LIE TO YOU and YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BELIEVE IT, because YOU ARE SO GULLIBLE and think that America is ok. AMERICA IS SINKING, THANKS TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY – and she is sinking very, very fast. UNLESS, you convince your Reps and Senators to go against everything that Obama wants. TURN THE CHANNEL WHEN HE IS ON. DO NOT SHOW UP AT HIS RALLIES AND FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE, STOP TWEETING THIS JERK. He is not worth your time or energy.
Instead, volunteer or get involved in your local community and when someone talks about Obama, stop them quickly and tell them, you have better things to talk about.

So your one of the ones that voted for Obama by not voting. Yes it is true that the party idiots gave us a questionable candidate, but remember he was not a communist. Obama is a practicing Marxist. Worse than that, he is a “true believer” the most dangerous.
Obama is the first president elected to a second term with fewer votes. How? Because the party undercut its republican candidate. That is a fact. Numbers don’t lie. No the far left of the Republican Party is trying to finish off the base. How are they doing this? Because people like you do not do what a patriot like myself has to do now and then, hold my nose and vote.
Yes it is true there is garbage holding republican office. They fear tea partyers and such. That’s how you fix things. I am amazed at who you meet at a rally, working people who care about their kids future.
Do yourself a favor and park across from a welfare office and watch. The state employee smoking dope on break with a “client”, the dunkards leaving with their check to the local bar and needles in the street. Guess what? They vote.

So, how is not voting going to help the situation? If only 1 person out of 300 million vote, someone still wins, and those that do not vote continue to lose. Would not voting for a person you thought the best candidate running be better than not voting at all, e.g. Ron Paul, the congressman from New Mexico, or any write-in you can think of?

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 6:18pmAt this point I think the best thing to do would be to go to everyone 35 and under and say: ok you will pay social security in you will pay into Medicare and you will pay taxes. But until deficit and national debt is gone you will never get Medicare social security or even a refund when you file your returns.
If that don’t work then they raise the threshold to 40, then 45, then 50, then cut pensions to the baby boomers.
And I do feel this way because I saw lots of family members die young who did take care of themselves and the govt. pissed away the money they paid in.
And if it gets bad enough that is what will happen to the suckers who thought they made a statement by refusing to vote. Because if the politicians figure out they can pocket the revenue instead of giving you free stuff they will.

You’re correct that if we could only stop spending more than we take in. Our Constitution does not require it to create programs like Social Security, Medicare or other “Entitlement” programs that most of our budget is spending on and borrowing for.
Taxes were to be used to fund a Standing Army for the Defense of our borders and to fund a “Part Time Congress”. In the 17th century our founding fathers were also businessmen and they had other priorities instead of full time partying on the publics tax revenue.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 3:42pmThe really sad part is that it is BETTER than the Democrat version.
At least it WOULD balance the budget SOMEDAY.
The Democrat’s will NOT.
Is Rand Paul gonna get his chance?
Biggest problem THERE is that he will have NO supporters in Congress.
Gonna be another Jimmy Carter…

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 2:22pmYour comments are misplaced. The Paul Ryan Budget is a distraction that every House Republican knows will never see the light of day. This article would do well to give the reason WHY they voted against this sham! What’s missing? John Boehner and the Repubs had a chance to cut Obama/DemCare when the leadership offered the Continuing Resolution for spending till the end of the fiscal year (September). But the leadership (Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy & Ryan) would not allow any amendments because their was a move to amend the CR and defund Obama/DemCare. I would bet most of these were offended by the sham perpetrated by the GOP leadership. [Note: I use the term 'Obama/DemCare' deliberately because long after Obama is gone, the Dems should also be held accountable for this disaster.]

No more money to anybody that’s tied to the Republican Party or will vote with RINO……and only give to “conservative” candidates….ones that have been vetted by Conservative organizations……and you’ll feel much better about voting…I do. Because we are going to elect conservatives in other states, like Rubio and Cruz and I live in CA. There’s only two Conservatives left, Tom McClintock and Darryl Issa….and we are leaving this crappy state soon…headed for Texas…..Thank God!…and we are taking our pensions and our spending dollars with us, because CA doesn’t deserve us….like all of our friends exiting our state…it should be called EXODUS II…..leaving while we can still get out of this non producing, triple the tax, environmentally choking off working class business, ever lovin out of their minds nanny state whose graduates of intellect couldn’t physic a gnat!

Answer WHY? …would duly elected Congressional representatives, Democratic Party leaders at the national and state levels, State Secs followed by our honorable justices NOT properly vet a man, who admittedly, does not qualify to run for the Office of the Presidency of the United States.
The Hawaii State Sec would not vet him with the lack of data he had… so Nancy Pelosi personally signed-off on the qualification.
Go ahead ask the critical question…. WHY?
I have time! Go on…

The Blaze folks know why. They know exactly why.
Some of the 10 listed here are the Ron Paul-ites. They’re the ones trying to pull Paul Ryan and his crew to the right. And the Blaze reporters don’t like that. They want someone just on the right edge of centrism, and not an inch more conservative than that. They’d take Obama over Ron or Rand Paul any day.

Including Repealing Obamacare and defunding it? How is that REVENUE

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 1:16pmBalance the budget in ten years? You’re being awfully optimistic there congressman because I don’t think we have ten years before China decides to stop buying our debt. When that happens ‘change you can believe in’ will have much more meaning than a campaign slogan from a fraud president.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 1:23pmI think his intentions are good, but his budget will balance nothing in 10 years. Current legislation in no way has any binding effect on future legislation. One or two elections and suddenly there’s a new Congress and poof, there goes the budget.
Additionally, while I really really approve of repealing Nazicare, I’m not really sure that you can balance a budget by only lowering the INCREASE. If you’re still increasing spending, then you need to get the difference from somewhere else, aka taxes, in order to make the budget balance.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 1:38pmthe budget could and should balance next year… simply block spending in excess of income… you and i do that on a daily basis in our own lives… whatever credit we use we then pay back with interest, rather than simply continuing to increase that debt load.
the debt doesn’t go away because we balance our budget, it just stops growing beyond the interest amount. It’s still enough to ruin us if we don’t start to change it.
i don’t care for a balanced budget amendment, though, honestly.
i want the Congress to be forced to operate under basic accounting. that’s all…
be honest about what we brought in, what we spend and where it’s spent.
stop pretending that a lesser increase next year is a savings now.
stop pretending that money moved from one bucket to another is savings.
and stop endlessly printing money as the means of keeping the economy afloat.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 1:38pmI disagree, the federal reserve has been monitizing our debt since China stopped buying it about 2 years ago. Note that the deficit amount is almost exactly the same as the fed is pumping into “bonds” and “underwater mortgage backed securities”.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 1:53pmRyan is a RINO joke. His budget reduces the growth. I think, he takes spending down to some 42T from 46T in ten years. The only one so far that has talked about cutting anything is Rand Paul, from what I have heard, he wants to cut the NEA, EPA, and a few others and take the budget back (CUT) to early 2000 levels. In DC, “balance the budget” is the same as “cut spending” both are lies, both increase spending. The only thing they can do is deceive, and throw in words like “cut” for the emotionally challenged.

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 2:07pmFolks, i believe Ryan is trying to get a budget that maybe the left will agree on, remember, his first budget went after entitlements hard and heavy,as it should be.My guess is, if he can get his budget through,at least it may stop some of the out of control spending, and maybe im flat wrong. Either way, it matters not, bucause until all the commie/progressives on both sides are gone, the politicians will continue to spend money like imelda marcos in a shoe store…….

Posted on March 21, 2013 at 2:19pmReducing the rate of growth, if the economy grows will reduce debt & eliminate it. IT has worked to an extent in the past.
The 1st question is will the economy grow enough given the tax rate disincentives. The 2nd question is as Ghost has pointed out, that future Congresses are not bound to this strategy.
This is a long term strategy that has to be applied over a long term. But governing coalitions are short term on the order of 2 to 4 years.
The big benefit of this strategy is that it is not austerity & there are not cuts. But although Paul Ryan & others are compromising the lying Democrats act like we are cutting to the bone & un- hooking granny form a respirator when we are doing no such thing.
