McDonald’s Plans To ‘Bust’ Subway With This New Item
McDonald’s is adding chicken McWraps as a permanent new offering to its menu — and the fast food giant hopes that this will unseat Subway as the reigning champ in the “eating healthier” category, according to a report from Ad Age.
In fact, as Business Insider notes, sources familiar with the new menu item claim insiders refer to it as the “Subway buster.”
McDonald’s Corp. has been stepping up the pace of its new menu offerings as it struggles to grow sales in the challenging economy. Last year, the company ousted the head of its U.S. division after a monthly sales figure fell for the first time in nearly a decade.
By refreshing its menu, McDonald’s is hoping to hold onto customers as it faces a shifting industry and intensifying competition from the likes of Burger King and Wendy’s. Next week, for instance, The Wendy’s Co. plans to roll out its “Flatbread Grilled Chicken Sandwiches.”
The latest offerings also reflect the changing tastes of diners, who are increasingly looking for more premium ingredients with a healthier image — even at fast-food chains. McDonald’s, for example, is officially calling the new wraps “Premium McWraps.”
Dan Coudreaut, director of culinary innovation of McDonald’s, says the wraps will be a new “platform” and that different varieties are already in the pipeline. These could include spicy or Cajun flavors, he said. In Europe, he noted, there is a shrimp McWrap.
“It’s the benefit of McDonald’s being a global system,” he said, noting that the company can take successful items from around the world and adapt them to other markets. The Sweet Chili Chicken McWrap, for instance, was first offered in Australia.
Although the chicken McWraps officially launch nationwide next week, the company says many restaurants already have them. National advertising is set to start April 1.

Posted on March 22, 2013 at 7:28pmI had a Subway sandwich around a month or so ago and had provolone. Subway must have just dropped the cheeze OR maybe it was just that specific Subway shop.
Go to another Subway and see if they still offer provolone.
And, google Subway’s Headquarters address and/or phone number and tell them you want provolone back in THAT specific store.

Maybe they were out that day and you assumed they stopped carrying it? Or maybe that franchise store decided to not carry it, either way Subway indeed carries provolone.

I don’t know if i am all alone, but i get a better burger from the fast food chains then the applebees, tgifridays, etc.. As a consumer, competition is great for us.

Posted on March 23, 2013 at 2:53am“who are increasingly looking for more premium ingredients with a healthier image”… Healthier Image? I have eaten these things… and I don’t know how you’d qualify them as “Healthy” anything. They taste fine… but are not as filling or as healthy as a Subway Turkey sandwich. Is the a press release for McDonalds? I would never have considered these two products in the same category… or is that just me?

Posted on March 23, 2013 at 5:31amWhat kind of cheese (or other toppings) served at a Subway is decided by the franchisees on a regional basis. For example we have provolone in my area, but not swiss cheese which I wish they would offer. This kind of practice is annoying as it makes for an inconsistent product offering when traveling.

If you’re going to eat fast food, eat whatever you want but limit the amount. Just eat a burger because that alone is 500 to 1500 calories in general at any fast food or restaurant.
If you add fries and a soda to that burger. You just ate A DAYS worth of calories.

I agree, all McDonald’s did was change the bread (like the bun was the problem) and called it “healthy”. Marketing employees were working overtime on this one. Haven’t look at the ingredients, but I would bet you that the wrap has more crap in it than the replaced bun.

Posted on March 24, 2013 at 10:08pmWhen I go to McD’s, I’m not thinking about healthy. If I want healty, I visit the salad bar at the grocery store. That said, these could be good, but I doubt they will look or be anything at all like those photos we are shown here. Picture a couple of dried out strips of chicken that have been sitting under a heat lamp for two hours, some rusty lettuce and a tasteless green tomato. A suggestion for you from someone who has worked at one time or another at the three major burger joints: order all chicken or fish items made fresh. It’s worth the wait…you don’t know how long those McNuggets have been sitting there. I worked for Burger King, McD’s and Wendy’s…none of them throw out those things when they’re supposed to. In fact, I threw the stuff out according to their guidelines once and was yelled at.

Posted on March 22, 2013 at 5:26pmI wonder how much it’s going to cost someone to eat healthy at McD’s? I think ‘healthy’ foods tend to be more expensive than the common fare. Just before i retired, a bacon-egg and cheese biscuit with a coffee and a slab of hash-browns was approx $3.11. It’s now approx. $5, and will be climbing. The amount of money working people have to fritter around is declining (people who receive stolen money in the form of EBT, food stamps, WIC etc., have no concept of what it’s like to live on a budget, thus couldn’t care less).
When I first came to California, courtesy of Uncle Sam, tickets to Disneyland were approx. $22 for the day for one person, and you got to get on ALL the rides and, folks, I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that you, as a tourist, are better off visiting the arts and croissant sites* than wasting money in the them parks in California – see here – http://disneyland.disney.go.com/tickets/
San Simeon – wonderful coastal drive. Hearst Castle. Half Moon Bay. Or the Redwoods; Yosemite, Lake Tahoe. Or Napa Valley, Temecula wine country. S.F.’s Chinese District. Golden Gate.San Diego is great for all kinds of stuff. If you MUST go to L.A., visit the Rosebowl, Manns’s Chinese Theatre, the Hollyweird Walk of Flames. We got beaches all over the place – for the fanciful, theirs Venice and Santa Monica. Want a nice, quiet evening with the family? Try San Pedro/Redondo Beach.

Posted on March 23, 2013 at 2:38pmFor weight loss it isn’t so much the fat as the amount of carbs in the food so you shouldn’t have left off the grams of carbs when you listed th nutritional information. The funny thing is the wraps seem like they are low carb because the bun has been replaced by the tortilla. But when you actually look this thing has MORE carbs than many of their hamburgers. Hell you could eat a 12 piece nugget and consume fewer carbs than these supposedly healthy wrap things. It’s the breading on the chicken and they usually put some sugary special sauce in there that adds on the carbs, and the tortillas are loaded with sugar so they don’t taste like cardboard.
You can go low carb at Mcdonald’s though. I usually get two double cheeseburgers; toss the buns in the trash and stack all the meat, cheese, and pickles on top of each other and eat it with a fork and knife. I add a Cesar side salad to get my veggies. The Paul Newman’s Own salad dressing that they use is actually pretty good about controlling the sugar with only 2g carbs per serving; and I only use half the package. It’s a filling and healthy meal *from a weight loss standpoint* that only costs $4. If you need to lose weight I’d recommend going low carb, keep it to about 20 grams of carbs a day and your sure to lose weight. I’ve lost 30 pounds in 3 months eating stuff like the patties from double cheeseburgers and even deep frying bacon in lard. The fat isn’t what makes you fat.

Posted on March 22, 2013 at 5:28pmHi East,
About 3 years ago I went to a Subway and held the door open for the lady walking behind me. She, of course got in line in front of me. I was going to order a foot long meatball sub. Funny, the lady in front of me ordered the same thing. I watched the girl behind the counter put 20 meatballs on hers. She did not order extra meatballs either. Then mine was made with 5 meatballs. I asked for the manager and the female manager just laughed at me. I was the only white person involved. I left with out the sub or paying. I was going shopping at Walmart so I went there. They have a Subway inside. I ordered a foot long tunafish and the young guy behind the counter made it with the last 4 small spoonfuls of tuna. It wasn’t enough to even cover 1/2 the sub. He wrapped it up and tried to charge me full price. I got the manager, had him open it and look at it. He just stood there speechless and didn’t offer to fix it. I don’t shop at Subway anymore.
