BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Police arrested two teenagers Friday who are suspected in the shooting death of a 13-month-old baby in a stroller and wounding the baby’s mother during an attempted robbery.

Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins is charged as an adult with first-degree murder, along with a 14-year-old who was not identified because he is a juvenile, Police Chief Tobe Green said.

Police announced the arrest Friday afternoon after combing school records and canvassing neighborhoods searching for the pair. The chief said the motive of the “horrendous act” was still under investigation and the weapon had not been found.

The mother, Sherry West, wept Friday while she told The Associated Press that she pleaded with the gunman and a younger accomplice who approached her Thursday morning while she walked near their home in coastal Brunswick.

“He asked me for money and I said I didn’t have it,” she said. “When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They’re expensive. And he kept asking and I just said ‘I don’t have it.’ And he said, ‘Do you want me to kill your baby?’ And I said, ‘No, don’t kill my baby!’”

West said the gunman fired four shots, the first into the ground. West didn’t see a shell casing ejected and she assumed the gun wasn’t real.

Then he fired at her head and the bullet grazed her left ear – she has a small scab and bruising there. He fired again and shot her in the left leg above the knee. “I didn’t know I was hurt.”

“The boy proceeded to go around to the stroller and he shot my baby in the face,” she said. “And then he just shoved me when I started screaming and he ran down London Street with the little boy.”

The mother lives in a rented house in the city’s Old Town historic district. Beverly Anderson’s husband owns the property and she said West has lived there for six or seven years.

“We’re just very sorry about what happened and very aghast that something could happen in our little neighborhood,” Anderson said. “It’s a quiet, safe little neighborhood.”

She said West stayed home to care for her baby, who was often spotted in his mother’s arms.

“The house has a front porch with a swing and we’d see him out on the swing with his mother,” Anderson said. “He was a happy, cheerful baby.”

It’s not the mother’s first loss of a child to violence. Sherry West said her 18-year-old son, Shaun Glassey, was killed in New Jersey in 2008. She still has a newspaper clipping from the time.

Glassey was killed with a steak knife in March 2008 during an attack involving several other teens on a dark street corner in Gloucester County, N.J., according to news reports from the time.

“He and some other boys were going to ambush a kid,” Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the Gloucester County prosecutor’s office, told the AP Friday.

Glassey was armed with a knife, but the 17-year-old target of the attack was able to get the knife away from him “and Glassey ended up on the wrong end of the knife,” Weisenfeld recalled.

Prosecutors decided the 17-year-old would not be charged because they determined that he acted in self-defense.

People are being taught to worship blacks even if they’re murdering their friends and family. Its amazing how effective the conditioning in the schools and news and entertainment media has been in conditioning white people to fear and worship blacks.   2 Black Males are in custody, ages 17 and 14, according to the Sherriff. The 17 year old is charged with First Degree Murder and will be tried as an Adult.
  
  Where is the outcry? Where is Al, Jessie, Louis, and Obama? Would there not be riots in the streets if the Races where reversed? This is what this Administration wants, needs to take Control.

  The shooter & accomplice were not brought up by the likes of outstanding men Walter E. Williams or Thomas Sowell. They were brought up by the likes of Jesse Jackson & Barack Obama. That is the proximate cause of this murder.
  
  Jason Howerton is doing a good job of toeing the party line or is it journalistic ethics ( a contradiction of terms) in not reporting the race/ ethnicity of the shooters.
  
  Race-free descriptions of criminals are the journalistic standard. But it does not work anymore. People merely guess by looking at the name & have a 80 or 95% of getting it right. So will journalists have to resort to harsher tactics of not reporting names in the future? What does Jason Howerton think?

  America is drunk on political correctness, and refuses to come to grips with the fact that young black males are killing at an alarming rate.
  
  In America, blacks are 12.5% of the population, and do 50% of the murders. All things being equal, they should be doing 12.5% of the murders statistically speaking, it is very significant when they kill as often as they do. Because of the rules of PC, America will not even speak of it.
  
  Currently we are ranked 28th in the world in murder per capita rates. If we could drop the black murder rate to the same as whites, we would lower the nation murder per capita rate by almost 40%, and save a whole lot of black lives. This would put us up there with some of the safest industrialized nations in the world, but we will not get there, because instead of looking at who is doing crime, Obama, Feinstein and crowd would rather snivel about law abiding people owning rifles. Rifles were used in less than 4% of our murdes last year, and mass murders are on the decline.
  
  Our violent crime is intrinsically tied to welfare. Until we start talking welfare reform, we ill not fix the problem. Our politicians would rather not fix welfare, and are more concerned with letting Mexicans do our jobs. Just does not make sense to pay lazy people not to work, then bring in immigrants so they can do that work the lazy refuse to do.

  The mayor is Bryan Thompson (R). He is from Plains City, Ohio originally. I do not know what he said about this crime. I do know what black leaders on the national level say or do not say about crime on the national level and it is not good, or true nor constructive.
  
  Why would I give that demographics of the area? There are many fine upstanding African-American citizens. But it seems there are more, who are not. It is safest to play the percentages. Check the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report table #6.

  There is no need for a trial (trial is for those suspected of a crime), this animal is not innocent until proven guilty. He committed the murder, guilty as charged, and should be executed immediately, or put him in general population and let prison justice take care of him. He could have easily ran away, but no, with malice intent shot this child in the face.
  
  I say this now. Enough is Enough, The Liberal Leftist are trying to take our Rights to Defend ourselves and make us victims like this innocent child.   I am very afraid for our world with these events becoming daily and regular everyday occurences. My prayers to the family, the community, the country and the world. How do we prevent these things from happening. It is so unreal to me it is like a bad fiction novel.

  Yes, God did know and allow this to happen. We live in a sinful world because God gave us the gift of free will… we aren’t animatronic robots. But there are two things:
  
  1) That sweet baby is in a better place today. I’m sure that there are a lot of us that wish that we were there today… but God has more for us to do down here first.
  
  2) God has a plan for those thugs as well. One of my favorite Psalms when I think about the wicked, and how they sometimes seem to get away with the evil they get away with, and don’t seem to get the punishment that they deserve to equal their horrific crimes, is Psalm 73. In it, the author looks at the wicked and how they seem to prosper (like Obama), and wonders if it even pays off to do good. But then… he goes to the house of the Lord, and considers their end. It’s not good. These people will not get away with their evil deeds in the end. Maybe they will in this lifetime, but they will pay one day.

Okay, you more than likely just do not understand free will, but that we will be held accountable for our actions.   Nowhere in my posts do I suggest that skin color has anything to do with crime.
  
  There is no such thing as an atavistic criminal, in that crime is not genetic.
  
  What I am suggesting, is that we have built a system that is ignoring crime that is done by blacks from the urban jungles. We also have a cultural problem that is a factor. The music, the dress, the attitude , the welfare, the multicultural education are all attributing to the crime.
  
  There are plenty of black folks out there busting their hump, raising their kids, serving in the military, serving in police, taking care of their family. Unfortunately, many of these blacks are still fooled into believing the democrat is their party, and they voted for Obama. 96% of black Americans voted for the black guy. If in America we said 96% of white people voted for the white guy, we would call that racism.

  @nogodnojesus: What you are describing is Islam, not Christianity. The main difference between the dogma of the two religions is free will vs. predetermination. In Christianity, we have free will which leads to the concept of personal responsibility for all of our actions with a final reckoning before God. In Islam, there is no such thing as free will. Everything has been predetermined by Allah. A Muslim co-worker once described his religious dogma to me as, “Every grain of rice has someones name on it.” Allah would plan such a hideous act. My Christian God weeps.

  In my opinion we have broken the line that connects the crime from the punishment that would I believe mitigate some evildoers.   Brooke Loren has a point. It’s not a race thing, it’s an ideology thing. Maybe there should be a gun ban for those that support a socialist ideology. We’ve had a lot of shootings lately, and to be honest, the only right wing gun crimes I can recall is Ruby Ridge.

  I agree with Monk. At one time the killer was an innocent. The Catholic Church gives the age 7 as the age of reason to know right from wrong.
  
  Psychologists have shown that little kids can tell about contamination of food let’s say at age 3. The put a plastic spider in a glass of milk & saw at what age the kids refused or balked at drinking from the glass because it had been contaminated. The point is what a kids know like right or wrong and the age this happens at can be determined. This 17 year old adolescent just shy of being an adult knew he was doing wrong, but did not care.
  
  I think that some time in middle school this kid learned form his peers & decided that he was going to jack people up to get money. Ya, some time between age 7 to 12, he lost or left his innocence.

  As much as I wish you were correct, but the Supreme Court has ruled that people can not be sentenced to execution for a crime (no matter how heinous) committed as a minor. They sited a UN treaty, that we are NOT a signatory to, as the basis for their decision. Of course, a sentence of life without parole doesn’t necessarily mean that that life will be pleasant or particularly long. Think of Jeffrey Dahmer for an example. A life sentence, combined with letting the entire prison population know what he did and putting him into general population should do nicely. It won’t be as quick and painless as a needle in the arm either.

  For whatever my 2 cents is worth…..If you’ve had a rough upbringing you have 2 choices. Either you walk around licking your wounds and blame society for what your parents did or did not do for you or you learn and grow from that experience and become determined not to let that interfere with your future. You can use that experience to improve your life. The individual makes the choice. I was brought up by an alcoholic father who beat us kids and beat my Mom. My Mom eventually passed away from all this abuse when I was at the age of 7. My dad died of liver disease when I was 12 but before he died he wreaked havoc on our lives. Chasing us with guns in the wee hours of the morning in the projects in the Bronx. Hanging us out of a 9th floor window to “teach us to behave”. This was done while my Mom was alive but mostly after she passed away. He eventually abandoned us which was a good thing. We grew up living from one home to another never feeling like we truly were wanted or fit in with the family’s we were put with. Did I lick my wounds and blame society?? No! Did I go around abusing people because of what I had gone through as a kid? No! Did I raise my daughter the same way I was raised? No! If you have the mentality that the “world” owes you then you will choose the wrong path but it doesn’t have to be that way.

  I remember situation similar to this. A guy robbed the apartment of a single mother, who was his coworker. He also murdered the only child, who was a middle school honor student, of this mother. I don’t know the reason. To get rid of a witness to a burglary, he hated the mother, to murder the witness who was someone he had raped? You know the press is not going to let us know. Anyway this criminal called his girlfriend from the scene of the burglary. A day or 2 after his arrest he hung himself in jail.
  
  This criminal robbed his coworker. They made the same wages. Go figure. Well don’t. The answer is it is Jesse Jackson’ fault & people like that.

  P.S. Do I feel bad for any kid that grows up in a dysfunctional family? Yes, I certainly do. Do I think that excuses their behavior? I’m afraid I don’t agree with that. Anyone who has had a “not so perfect” upbringing but decides to take it out on society and hurt innocent people because of it. is only filled with “self pity”. .

  Both posts were good and I agree. Sometimes it’s hard to understand my posts because most of them just state facts and not opinions about right or wrong, or good and bad. I’m like that a lot. I have found strength in learning from my mistakes and became grateful for the mistakes from the strength I gained. Anyone can overcome their bad upbringing and should. Life can be hard and then you die… always try to make the best of what Life has given you and be Grateful.

  Your post is absolutely spot on! CongratuIations on being a survivor of that childhood gauntlet! I too had a pretty sh**ty upbringing as a kid. My father bailed on me when I was 2 and I did not see or hear from him again until I was 18. My mom really had no idea how to raise a boy, which made the constant bullying in school from age 7-19 a living he!!. My mother’s choice of men to date and eventually marry was dismal, since most all of them took joy in emotionally and physically abusing me. But since I was 8, I knew I would run this gauntlet – graduate from college, get a good profession, and be a good father.
  
  People, especially today’s youth, need to be accountable for their decisions and make a choice – am I going to be a victim, or a survivor! There is no excuse for this evil 17 y.o.’s actions. I hope justice is swift, but his penance is slow and painful.
  
  Like I say, “At a poker table, even the worst hand is a winner, you just have to know how to play the cards.”

  I agree with you 100% Monk. You take what life has given you and you do the best you can with it. You can either learn from it and fight the demons of your past or you can take the easy way out and blame the world.

I and you chose not to feel sorry for ourselves but instead we chose to pick ourselves up by the seat of our pants and move on and make a better life for ourselves. It is a sad situation when a person chooses to make society a target of their anger when society had nothing to do with their past. I guess maybe a level of maturity has something to do with it. So let me get this straight, two black French teens with pistols walking around Georgia shooting babies – I think the Blaze is making this one up.   Gun free zones are an infringement upon the 2nd amendment therefore I don’t pay attention to the unconstitutional laws period….. I carry and conceal everywhere…It’s a natural/God given right….

Most of them are destroyers, simple as that. They destroy whites, blacks, mexicans and blame it on someone or something else. They destroy their homes and whine about having to live in the slums. They are destroying our economy. They don’t take responsibility for anything. All they know is destroy. No one who wants to live a good honest life could do something like shoot a defenseless child and mother. Blame Bush, right?

The majority are a cancer on not only American soil, but everywhere they exist. I am absolutely convinced when the final chapter is written on America, Lincoln, not Obama will be the worst president. Why? Because after freeing their @ry @sses he failed to put them on one way boats back to Africa!!!!
