Obama Doubles Down on Assault Weapons Ban: It Still Deserves a Vote

AMMAN, Jordan (TheBlaze/AP) — President Barack Obama says each of his proposed steps to reduce gun violence should get a vote in Congress — even an assault weapons ban that both parties agree stands little chance at passing.

Senate Democrats dropped the ban from the bill they plan to debate next month out of concern it could sink the whole package. Still, Obama says he’s pushing for it and believes that it deserves its day on Congress.

In his weekly radio and Internet address released Saturday, Obama says the U.S. has changed in the three months since the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn. He says Americans support the ban, plus limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines, school security funding and a crackdown on gun trafficking.

“Today there is still genuine disagreement among well-meaning people about what steps we should take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in this country. But you, the American people, have spoken,” Obama said.

The White House said Saturday that Obama will make additional trips outside Washington to rally support for the measures, including the assault weapons ban. The White House also said that before Obama left for Israel earlier this week, his push for gun control was among the issues he raised with lawmakers from both parties as he embarked on a concerted effort to reach out to Congress.

In the Republican address, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah says the Senate Democrats’ budget raises taxes by $1.5 trillion without doing anything to save entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. He says Republicans want a balanced budget that lives up to the nation’s moral obligation to act in the best interest of future generations.

“Republicans recognize that keeping dollars, decisions, priorities and power in the hands of the people is what has made America the greatest civilization the world has ever known,” Lee says. “Now is the time to return to that model.

  He wants to hurry up, because Americans are waking up to the truth.
  
  He knows that last year less than 4% of murders were done with rifles
  
  He knows that more people were killed with knives and clubs than with rifles
  
  He knows who is killing
  
  50% of America’s killers are black. Blacks are only 12.5% of the population. If we lower black murder rates to the same as whites, we lower the national murder per capita rate by 40%, and save lots of black lives. Notice that Obama never talks about lowering the murder per capita rate; he just talks about taking your rifle
  
  Violent crime is intrinsically tied to welfare. Those on welfare vote for Obama
  
  96% of blacks voted for Obama
  
  Based on the two facts above, we can conclude that murderers in America are Obama voters. He does not want to hurt his fan base

  If Obama got his reputation by working community organizing in Chicago, and started his political career there, would it not be wise for us to look at Chicago, and see that they lead in murder, have extreme high joblessness, high crime, high welfare, and conclude that Obama’s flavor of governance is absolute failure?

  I know people with the tools to make guns if they wanted to. Outlawing guns would only take them from law abiding citizens (isn’t this obvious?). Criminals will keep them and continue to make them no matter what laws are in place.
  …and epidemic? Exaggerate much? I’ve had guns for about 30 years, a lot of people I know have conceal permits, and not one person around me has ever been shot or even shot at. The problems are mostly in the big cities where guns are illegal – where only criminals have guns and the police arrive when it’s too late.

  The question I just cannot seem to get out of my head is this: Why does King Barry and all his liberal comrades want to go after semi-automatic rifles as opposed to handguns?
  
  Not that I want any gun restrictions, and I believe people should have full auto weapons if they choose to. But why semi-auto rifles and why now? Handguns kill many more people?
  
  My first instinct is to think this is this all part of the “Saul Alinsky” playbook to slowly rid us of guns, and there starting with semi-auto rifles.
  
  But with everything going on – DHS’s ammo purchase, the imminent economic crash, the 100,000 armed DHS agents, and their 2,700 tanks – maybe they want to rid the public of semi-auto rifles because rifled rounds are the only rounds to pierce ballistic vests and kevlar? This would give the DHS thugs a clear advantage against an armed populace with just handguns and shot guns.
  
  This whole thing stinks to high heaven! From the Sandy Hook rifle being found in the car trunk to Gabbie Giff’s hubby purchasing an AR-15 to “test the system and donating his gun to the local PD (and wasting $1,600)”, something is completely rotten in DC, and they are not telling us the truth or their plans.

  I am old enough to remember Zip Guns. They were home made guns that can kill. I can go out to Lowes and for less than $10 and in less than 30 minutes I can build an effective gun. We learned how to do it in the Army.

  It wasn’t a rifle used by Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins who shot a 13 month old child in the face a point blank range in the next story. No Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins used a pistol to murder a 13 month old baby in exceeding cold blooded fashion. Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins is was attempting to rob this baby’s mother and in the process he shot her as well… Ladies and Gentlemen if this is not a call to arms I don’t know what is… Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins shouldn’t be facing murder charges, he should have been facing an armed citizen that was willing to prevent this crime… Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins should not be breathing right now…
  
  However, because Seventeen-year-old De’Marquis Elkins is black, it is simply amazing that the prosecutor is charging him as an adult… Since this is a black on white crime what are the chances that the Justice Department steps in (Holder doesn’t like prosecuting Black on white crimes)…

  Obama doesn’t get it – the American people understand the difference between Assault weapons and semi- auto weapons. Only the armed services can leagelly have Assault weapons (full auto) and the American public can own Semi-auto. Semi-auto means you have to pull the trigger each time to shot a bullet and on a Assault weapon you hold down the trigger untill the clip is empty. Mayor Bloomburgs armed guards have Assault weapons.

  sigh,.. any legislation that comes out of congress/senate is LIMITED to the territorial jurisdictional limitations imposed by the CONSTITUTION! if you are not on federally owned property, ie; a post office, a military installation, a national park, a court house and the like.. it has ZERO jurisdiction outside of those properties owned by or ceded to the US GOVT!
  Further; executive order have zero jurisdiction outside of that same territorial jurisdiction!
  The sky is not falling EVEN IF THEY VOTE TO TAKE EVERYONE’S GUN!!

  Okay I have come to the realization that there will never be a normal supply of ammo on our store shelves again. If I am wrong then it will only happen after they pass a law requiring registered ammo purchases. They are not going to let this one go. They have to disarm us to move forward with their agenda or face a very bloody war. This is something they are prepared for but is probably the last thing they want to do because it will severely slow down their progress. I was recently asked what we can do to keep our country from being taken over. I explained that it has already been taken over and they aren’t giving it back. Pray, Lock, and Load.

  Yeah, big sis is watching and listening, but she will try to keep the conflict low intensity.
  Government workers live for that retirement package. War with the citizens has a way of reducing retirement outlays. Remember what the Germans called the Sherman tanks of WW II, Tommy cookers. That is an armoured vehicle attacked by infantry that knows what it is doing. The best tank is a coffin on city streets. MOUT are high casualty operations. Talk about morale problems. DHS is aware, and the ones assigned to gun confiscation and citizen snatches wake up with nightmares. I would not want the job.

  85% favour expanded background checks, 67% favour a federal database, and 55% favour an assault weapons ban.
  
  The constitutional right to bear arms is not limitless and unfettered, never has been. Constitutional regulation of gun ownership is possible and if it can be done in a way which helps stop weapons getting into the hands of criminals, desirable.

  The vote WILL NOT pass. You think congress are gonna vote for this? But what you guys don’t seem to understand is this – Obama has supporters. That’s how he won the election. The American people aren’t all universally opposed to an assault weapons ban. Say the polls are 10% out – that’s still a lot of people wanting a ban.
  
  So why is it so terrible when Obama offers these people a SOP, and meaningless SOP of allowing congress to vote on this; when we all know the outcome of the vote is a foregone conclusion? The ban will not pass – which is why Harry Reid originally ditched it from the main bill.
  
  Do you guys ever look at progressive liberal forums to see what the people on the other side thought about Harry Reid scrapping the vote on the assault weapons ban? They were really angry about it.
  
  Newsflash – not everyone thinks like you guys! The President has to somehow, as best he can, accommodate the wishes of ALL Americans including – and why should this really be such shocking news – his OWN SUPPORTERS!
  
  Meanwhile you guys in the reabidly pro-gun side of the argument can take heart – Obama has promised a VOTE on this. The overwhelmingly Republican congress, being in the back pocket of the NRA, will NOT vote to ban assault weapons. Therefore to his own SUPPORTERS, Obama offers a hollow gesture, while allowing the NRA and his opponents to ultimately get what they want anyway.

Then we pass a bill making it a felony to propose gun control legislation. Then we pass a bill that say any govt official engaging in gun trafficking gets life in prison.

  That’s alright Geeman. Once more I say though – if Obama wanted to simply come and take all your guns, why would he put this bill (which doesn’t have anything to do with a gun-grab, by the way) to the vote of a Republican controlled congress? A bit of tightening up of existing relugulations might come out of this, but nothing radical.
  
  By having a vote Obama can say he’s tried at gun control (as many good citizens, who just happen to have different opinions to you, want him to do) but to his critics on the progressive side he can point to congress to say why nothing was achieved. And having a vote like this, the issue will be seen as ‘settled’ for a good few years to come.
  
  Now if you’re really concerned about gun control, it strikes me that the most stringent legislation is coming out of the States, not the National Government….

I have changed my mind about an assault rifle ban. Why? I was ill-informed about that category of weapons, which is pretty much an arbitrary category of weapons if I have understood correctly. I will take that knowledge and spread it among my liberal, anti-gun friends. This is civil discourse – we discuss things with people on both sides, without histrionics or name calling, and we gain information and are better able to able up our minds.

  Thing is Obama is not too bright insisting that they have a vote on the “assault weapons” ban. With only a 5 seat majority in the Senate and 20 Democrat senators up for reelection in 2014 with at least 6 of them being from primarily conservative states and the 13 Republicans up for reelection being from solidly Republican states the Democrats have everything to lose on a vote for an “assault weapons” ban vote and nothing to gain.
  
  Many of the Democrats that were elected to the Senate in 2008 in mixed states rode in on Obama’s coat-tails and a dislike of the GOP from 8 years of Bush but the shine is off Obama and once Obamacare and his other policies kick in full force next year Democrats will have a hard time keeping the Senate as it is.
  
  Democrat senators up for reelection from mixed states in 2014 will be screwed either way they vote because if they vote for the ban they will have a huge push back from gun owners from both sides and if they vote against the ban they will anger the DNC as well as democrat voters so they can’t win either way they vote.

The assault weapons ban is really about protecting the cesspool and it’s bottom dwellers called WA DC. With this in place they can do whatever they would like and we will be more powerless.

The second amendment is there to allow us to protect ourselves from government not to codify the right to hunt—ah but I guess they really knew that already.

  No, the majority of American people want an assault rifle ban. (Not a total gun ban!) Even a slight majority of Republicans support it.
  
  You can argue about whether that opinion is based on a rational analysis of the facts, or on an emotional response based on the ‘look’ of these weapons. But I don’t think you can say over half the country are ‘foaming at the mouth socialists’.
  
  I think the vehemently pro-gun people actually forget there are lots of other Americans out there who have a different opinion to them. The government does owe those people some sort of a response when action is called for, rather than kow-towing to the vocal minority every time.

I know that Hilary says “What does it matter”, but don’t you think that it ‘might” be important to keep military styled weapons out of the hands of the “crazy” Islamics? These nutjobs have declared their hatred for American many times, but you seem to think it was a good idea to funnel guns to them.

You also funneled guns to the Mexican gun cartels, and many Mexican citizens were killed because of it. Don’t they count?

Just yesterday, a baby was murdered in Georgia because you have convinced Blacks that they got a raw deal. Yes, Obama, you’re quite a piece of “work”.

Is a liberal utopia on the horizon, or does it only exist in the president’s head? Would this same ban also apply to the obama administration’s arming of Mexican drug lords and radical Muslim rebels in the Middle East (both enemies of the United States)? Is the typical law abiding, gun owning citizen perceived to be more of a threat to the president than foreign terrorist? What qualifies as an imminent threat to the nation? A republic impeding a dictatorship?
