UPDATE: It appears that the Facebook acquisition of “Bang With Friends” was an elaborate April Fools’ Day joke.
There are numerous websites devoted specifically for people seeking a “hook-up” — the modern term for a one night stand. It might not surprise some that there’s an app on Facebook doing surprisingly well in terms of popularity facilitating introductions for this very activity.
But what may surprise you is that Facebook might be trying to buy it. Sources with insider news are saying the social media site is thinking of purchasing the app as Facebook seeks to make its way into the online dating market.
Tech Crunch reported that up to $30 million in cash and stocks might be on the line for the app called “Bang With Friends” (content warning: this link has some not safe for work content and explicit illustrations).
The app was launched in January and now has more than 820,000 users who, Business Insider reported a co-founder of the app going by “C” saying, are “down to bang.” C told Business Insider 70 percent of these users are between 18 and 34 years old.
Here’s more from the interview with “C” sharing the perspective of BWF:
BWF believes there is a cultural shift that is happening with the current way people date. C said the BWF app is serving a generation that is more open to the ideal of a no-risk hook-up.
Instead of just facilitating encounters, BWF has a greater vision for how it wants to change the sexual landscape.
“Our mission is very sex positive,” C believes that BWF is putting sex in its proper place, instead of something “we dance around too much and don’t acknowledge.”
Here is more information about the service from its Terms:
Bang With Friends makes no warranties, expressed or implied, and hereby disclaims and negates all other warranties, including without limitation, implied warranties or conditions of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement of intellectual property or other violation of rights. Further, Bang With Friends does not warrant or make any representations concerning the accuracy, likely results, or reliability of the use of the materials on its Internet web site or otherwise relating to such materials or on any sites linked to this site.
Why does Facebook want it? Tech Crunch reported that the website has been looking to get in on the dating scene, seeing it as “bigger than e-commerce,” according to one of its sources.
Tech Crunch also reported some sources saying Facebook wasn’t alone in trying to acquire Bang With Friends. It noted Yahoo!’s emerging products representative Adam Cahan made an offer but it fell through due to the CEO’s controversial ban on working from home.
