A Georgia man sicced his two pit bulls on a neighbor’s pet pig, then stabbed the animal 23 times in front of children and other residents in a mobile home park this week, police said.
The pig, “Oliver,” survived and was in critical condition at a veterinarian’s office Friday, the Associated Press reported.
Benjamin Fullwood, 23, was charged with felony cruelty to animals, obstruction and trespassing in what authorities called a “senseless and brutal attack” in Springfield, Ga.
Oliver apparently got loose from his owners’ yard Wednesday and wandered into the mobile home park. Neighbors were trying to find his owner when Fullwood allegedly unleashed his dogs on the animal and then began to stab it himself. One onlooker captured cell phone footage.
“Fullwood sicced his dog on the pig, then pulled it off and started stabbing the pig with a knife,” Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor told WTOC-TV. “It was a senseless and brutal attack on a domestic animal in front of bystanders including children who were begging for him to stop. The animal posed no threat to others.”
According to the AP, Fullwood initially lied to police and said he was punching the pig. Witness accounts, as well as the animal’s injuries, led authorities to determine otherwise.
“It’s basically torturing an animal, is what you’re looking at,” Ehsanipoor said.
Fullwood has been arrested several times over the years, including for leaving dogs in a cage and then abandoning them, WTOC reported.
