Former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner, the New York Democrat who resigned in disgrace after sending sexually suggestive images of himself to younger women, could be the next mayor of New York City, according to the New York Post.
Following rumors dating back as far as last summer, the Post says Weiner is “laying the groundwork for a political comeback,” and could have his sights on Michael Bloomberg’s job.
Apparently Weiner has been contacting former staffers, and he still has a whopping $4.3 million in his campaign account. And though he’s kept largely to himself since resigning in 2011, Weiner just granted a magazine interview that will supposedly help his public image.
“The magazine piece is step one of a two-step process for him to run citywide this year,” one Democratic Party source told the Post. “He’s looking at public advocate and comptroller, but he really thinks he can use this to get back in and run for mayor.”
But outsiders say if Weiner does run in the upcoming election, he might be disappointed by the results.
“The general feeling is that you can’t text pictures of your penis to a girl, then lie about it, then get kicked out of the House and then run for mayor right after,” one consultant said after the speculation began last summer. “But people believe there is a way for him to run for a lesser office.”
