Sens. Jeff Session (R-Ala.) and Pat Leahy (D-Vt.) disagreed Thursday over whether the U.S. Senate has been given enough time to move forward on the Gang of Eight’s 844-page-plus immigration bill.
“The reason rushing a bill and moving it fast is dangerous is because it’s so complex,” Sen. Sessions stated, arguing that the U.S. Senate and the American people should be given more time to read and digest the massive bill.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Leahy disagreed.
“We’ve had six hearings this year. We’ve had dozens or so last year. I realize it requires a lot of work for the senators on this committee,” the senator said.
Sen. Sessions insisted on using the remainder of his time to read the immigration bill out loud, much to the obvious irritation of Sen.Leahy [picks up at about 03:00 mark]:
The Gang of Eight includes Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.).
