New Jersey state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), who was also Gov. Chris Christie’s Democratic opponent in this year’s governor’s race, ripped MSNBC host Chris Matthews in an interview with BuzzFeed over comments that she says made her feel sexually objectified. She also called the MSNBC host an “ass” for arrogantly overestimating his influence.

Here’s how Buono remembers one conversation going prior to her MSNBC interview on April 11:

“Can I say you’re attractive,” Matthews asks.

“No, you can’t,” Buono remembers responding.

Buono also didn’t like how Matthews praised Christie throughout the interview, calling him “no-nonsense,” “outspoken” and “wildly popular.”

Matthews later told Buono that he was “tough” on her, a point that the state senator wasn’t willing to concede.

“I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction,” she told BuzzFeed’s Ruby Cramer. “I said, ‘No you’re weren’t.’ And he said, ‘But don’t worry, people will all just be talking about how you were on Hardball.”

“That’s what this ass said,” Buono added.
