Barry West, a county commissioner in Coffee County, Tenn., is facing backlash after he posted a photo of a man aiming what appears to be a double-barreled shotgun with the caption, “How to wink at a Muslim” above it.
The Facebook post has since ignited a good deal of outrage. West responded to his critics by claiming he meant for it to be humorous. The official later deleted the post but did not issue an apology, WSMV-TV reports.
“I thought it was humorous,” West told The Tullahoma News, adding that he is “prejudiced against anyone who’s trying to tear down this country.”
That could include “Muslims, Mexicans, anybody,” West explained. “If you come into this country illegally or harm us or take away benefits, I’m against it.”
Coffee County Mayor David Pennington also addressed the Facebook post, saying “I have no control over what a commissioner does” on his off time.
