A South Carolina Democrat vowed Friday to send Indian-American Gov. Nikki Haley (R) “back to wherever the hell she came from.”

There were conflicting reports about who actually made the remark about Haley, who was born in South Carolina and whose parents are from India: Yahoo! News’ Chris Moody tweeted that it was state Democratic Party Chair Dick Harpootlian during a Democratic Party fundraiser, but the Daily Caller attributed the comment to Haley 2014 challenger Vincent Sheheen.

“Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend coming from the South Carolina Democratic Party,” Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey told BuzzFeed. “Fortunately, the people of South Carolina are better than Harpootlian and his ilk, and we have faith that they will see right through their consistent attempts to play to the lowest common denominator.”

In September, Harpootlian likened Haley to Adolph Hitler’s mistress Eva Braun.
